Enhanced Thermal Conductivity via In Situ Constructed CNT Aerogel Structure in Composites

Gang Qian,Bin Wu,Zhen Qin,Xu Li,Zhengzhi Zheng,Ru Xia,Jiasheng Qian

Polymer-based thermal conductivity composite plays an important role in the thermal management of electronic devices to ensure normal operation. Carbon nanotubes (CNT) are effective thermally conductive fillers to improve the heat transfer efficiency of composites. However, the controlled arrangement of CNT in composites is still a huge challenge for improving their thermal conductivity. To address this issue, CNT aerogel with a regular structure is in situ constructed as a heat transfer pathway based on the catalytic conversion of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) aerogel. Benefiting from the network structure of aerogel, the in-plane thermal conductivity of composites not only reach 1.1 W m –1 K –1 at 7.35 vol% filler, but also exhibit a small fluctuation with the increase of temperature. The composites open previously unexplored preparation avenues toward electronic packing thermal management materials.

Revealing the Electrochemistry in a Voltaic Cell by In Situ Electron Microscopy

Hui Li†,Guang Yang†,Jingzhao Chen,Mingyu Li,Yong Su,Qiushi Dai,Hongjun Ye,Baiyu Guo,Lin Geng,Tingting Yang,Jing Wang,Liqiang Zhang,Yongfu Tang,Jianyu Huang

Graphical Voltaic cell : A voltaic cell was assembled in an aberration corrected transmission electron microscope with a Cu cathode, a Zn anode and an ionic liquid-based electrolyte. The detailed electrochemical reaction mechanisms of this battery were revealed at atomic level in real time. The Voltaic Pile, invented by Italian physicist Alessandro Volta in 1799, was the first electrochemical energy storage device created by mankind. It consists of alternatively stacked copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) metal disks separated by brine soaked cloth cardboard as the electrolyte. Although fabricated more than two centuries ago, the electrochemistry of the Voltaic Cell has not been fully understood. Understanding the microscopic working principle of the Voltaic Cell not only has historic meaning but also provides a foundation for modern battery technologies, corrosion science and other electrochemical processes. Herein an in situ microscopic observation of the electrochemical reactions in a Voltaic Cell comprised of a Cu cathode, Zn anode and an ionic liquid-based electrolyte was reported. During discharge, Zn stripping initiated from pits formation at the surface of the Zn anode, which then propagated along the longitudinal direction of the nanorod. Concurrently Cu nanoparticles were electrodeposited on the Cu cathode. Atomic scale imaging revealed the formation of zinc fluoride (ZnF 2 ) solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer of about 2 nm, which grew semicoherently with the Zn anode and dictates the stripping kinetics. Our studies provide not only an in-depth understanding of the electrochemistry of the Voltaic Cell, but also a generic technique for in situ studies of metal plating/stripping and corrosion at nanometer to atomic resolution.

In situ Observation of Li Deposition-Induced Cracking in Garnet Solid Electrolytes

Jun Zhao,Yongfu Tang,Qiushi Dai,Congcong Du,Yin Zhang,Dingchuan Xue,Tianwu Chen,Jingzhao Chen,Bo Wang,Jingming Yao,Ning Zhao,Yanshuai Li,Shuman Xia,Xiangxin Guo,Stephen J. Harris,Liqiang Zhang,Sulin Zhang,Ting Zhu,Jianyu Huang

Lithium (Li) penetration through solid electrolytes (SEs) induces short circuits in Li solid-state batteries (SSBs), which is a critical issue that hinders the development of high energy density SSBs. While cracking in ceramic SEs has been often shown to accompany Li penetration, the interplay between Li deposition and cracking remains elusive. Here, we constructed a mesoscale SSB inside a focused ion beam-scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM) for in situ observation of Li deposition-induced cracking in SEs at nanometer resolution. Our results revealed that Li propagated predominantly along transgranular cracks in a garnet Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO). Cracks appeared to initiate from the interior of LLZTO beneath the electrode surface and then propagated by curving toward the LLZTO surface. The resulting bowl-shaped cracks resemble those from hydraulic fracture caused by high fluid pressure on the surface of internal cracks, suggesting that the Li deposition-induced pressure is the major driving force of crack initiation and propagation. The high pressure generated by Li deposition is further supported by in situ observation of the flow of filled Li between the crack flanks, causing crack widening and propagation. This work unveils the dynamic interplay between Li deposition and cracking in SEs and provides insight into the mitigation of Li dendrite penetration in SSBs.

Camelina seed yield and quality in different growing environments in northern China

Chuan-Jie Zhang,Yang Gao,Changji Jiang,Li Liu,Yawen Wang,Do-Soon Kim,Jialin Yu,Liqin Yu,Feifei Li,Yi Fan,Min Chen,Youxin Zhang,Xueyang Min,Haixi Zhang,Xuebing Yan

Camelina [ Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz], a member of Brassicaceae family, is a relatively new oilseed crop in China. It is a highly adaptable cool season crop species that can be grown in a wide range of environment with low input, making it potentially suitable for growing in northern China. A five-year (2010–2014) field experiment was conducted to evaluate the seed yield and quality of two camelina cultivars across three different locations in China. The study showed camelina can be cultivated successfully in a relatively short growth period of 1308−1920 °C d (base temperature: 4 °C) across a wide range of environmental conditions. Overall, camelina cv. ‘Xiaoguo’ displayed a satisfactory high seed yield dry matter (d.m.) (mean: 1946 kg ha −1 , range: 1274−2650 kg ha −1 ) and oil yield (mean: 598 kg ha −1 , range: 387−778 kg ha −1 ) across three different locations over the 5-year field trial, indicating the potential commercial production of camelina in northern China. The average contents of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids in camelina oil across locations and years varied from 10−21% (mean: 13 %), 24−38% (mean: 33 %), and 47−63% (mean: 56 %), respectively. In the present study, a variety of polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly C22:6 (DHA) which is commonly presented in aquatic ecosystem were detected in camelina oil, making camelina an attractive oil crop for its peculiar fatty acid composition. This is the first study evaluating the agronomic performance of camelina in different growing environments in China and the relatively short growing cycle and high seed yield make camelina as a suitable oilseed crop in northern China.

Genotoxicity of chloroacetamide herbicides and their metabolites in vitro and in vivo

Xinyan Ma,Ying Zhang,Mingyang Guan,Weidong Zhang,Huifang Tian,Caixiao Jiang,Xiaoxin Tan,Weijun Kang

The toxicity of chloroacetamide herbicide in embryo development remains unclear. Acetochlor (AC) is a chloroacetamide that metabolizes into 2‑ethyl‑6‑methyl-2-chloroacetanilide (CMEPA) and 6‑ethyl‑o‑toluidine (MEA). The present study determined the potential effect of AC and its metabolites on embryo development. Both HepG2 cells and zebrafish embryos were exposed to AC, CMEPA and MEA in the presence or absence of co‑treatment with anti‑reactive oxygen species (ROS) reagent N‑acetylcysteine. The generation of ROS, levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) in HepG2 cells and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage from HepG2 cells were investigated. The effects of AC, CMEPA and MEA on DNA breakage, MAPK/ERK pathway activity, viability and apoptosis of HepG2 cells were examined by comet assay, western blotting, MTT assay and flow cytometry, respectively. Levels of LDH, SOD and GSH in zebrafish embryos exposed to AC, CMEPA and MEA were measured. The hatching and survival rates of zebrafish embryos exposed to AC, CMEPA and MEA, were determined, and apoptosis of hatched fish was investigated using acridine orange staining. The present data showed AC, CMEPA and MEA induced generation of ROS and decreased levels of SOD and GSH in HepG2 cells, which in turn promoted DNA breakage and LDH leakage from cells, ultimately inhibiting cell viability and inducing apoptosis, as well as phosphorylation of JNK and P38. However, co‑treatment with N‑acetylcysteine alleviated the pro‑apoptosis effect of AC and its metabolites. Moreover, exposure to AC, CMEPA and MEA lead to toxicity of zebrafish embryos with decreased SOD and GSH and increased LDH levels and cell apoptosis, ultimately decreasing the hatching and survival rates of zebrafish, all of which was attenuated by treatment with N‑acetylcysteine. Therefore, AC and its metabolites (CMEPA and MEA) showed cytotoxicity and embryo development toxicity.

Dissolution window in in situ polymerization preparation of polyamide single-polymer composites

Le Song,Xiulei Wang,Pengcheng Xie,Yumei Ding,Kaifang Dang,Weimin Yang

Single-polymer composites (SPCs) are promising composite materials in which the reinforcement and matrix have the same chemical composition. In situ polymerization shows a broad application potential for producing SPCs due to its wide temperature window. However, the dissolution of fiber reinforcements in the liquid monomer destroys the oriented chain structure of the fibers and affects the properties of SPCs. In this study, the polymerization time was adjusted by varying the activator dosage. The influence of the dissolution of fibers on the properties and the structure of SPCs was investigated. The maximum tensile strength was achieved at the highest activator dosage. A longer duration was required for the polymerization due to the low-activator dosage, which led to the destruction of the oriented chain structure and the formation of a large amount of oligomers on account of the dissolution. Eventually, SPCs showed a low strength and a high deformation at break. In order to realize a good reinforcing effect, a sufficiently large dissolution window must be created by reducing the polymerization time. This study enhanced our understanding of the structure–property relationships of SPCs and provided a way to improve their mechanical characteristics.

Built-In Catalysis in Confined Nanoreactors for High-Loading Li–S Batteries

Qingping Wu,Zhenguo Yao,Xuejun Zhou,Jun Xu,Fahai Cao,Chilin Li

A cathode host with strong sulfur/polysulfide confinement and fast redox kinetics is a challenging demand for high-loading lithium–sulfur batteries. Recently, porous carbon hosts derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted wide attention due to their unique spatial structure and customizable reaction sites. However, the loading and rate performance of Li–S cells are still restricted by the disordered pore distribution and surface catalysis in these hosts. Here, we propose a concept of built-in catalysis to accelerate lithium polysulfide (LiPSs) conversion in confined nanoreactors, i.e., laterally stacked ordered crevice pores encompassed by MoS2-decorated carbon thin layers. The functions of S-fixability and LiPS catalysis in these mesoporous cavity reactors benefit from the 2D interface contact between ultrathin catalytic MoS2 and conductive C pyrolyzed from Al-MOF. The integrated function of adsorption–catalysis–conversion endows the sulfur-infused C@MoS2 electrode with a high initial capacity of 1240 mAh g–1 at 0.2 C, long life cycle stability of at least 1000 cycles at 2 C, and high rate endurance up to 20 C. This electrode also exhibits commercial potential in view of considerable capacity release and reversibility under high sulfur loading (6 mg cm–2 and ∼80 wt %) and lean electrolyte (E/S ratio of 5 μL mg–1). This study provides a promising design solution of a catalysis–conduction 2D interface in a 3D skeleton for high-loading Li–S batteries.

Formation Mechanism of In Situ Intergranular CaZrO3 Phases in Sintered Magnesia Refractories

Zou Yongshun,Gu Huazhi,Huang Ao,Fu Lvping

Sintered magnesia refractories combined by in situ intergranular CaZrO 3 phases were synthesized using natural MgO-containing natural minerals with CaO and SiO 2 impurities and nano-sized ZrO 2 additive. A homogenous distribution of intergranular CaZrO 3 , independent from the intergranular CaO-MgO-SiO 2 phases, was formed in situ within the sintered magnesia aggregates by introducing 0.75 wt pct nano-sized ZrO 2 into the magnesite. The formation mechanism of the in situ intergranular CaZrO 3 phases was determined. The nano-sized ZrO 2 was introduced and uniformly distributed at grain boundaries of the magnesia due to the micron-nano-sized particles composite system and wetting grinding process. Then the CaO in impurities were prior to SiO 2 to react with the ZrO 2 for generating CaZrO 3 at the grain boundaries by increasing sintering temperature. Nevertheless, the nano-sized ZrO 2 particles were encapsulated in the MgO crystallites with similar particle size decomposed from brucite and prevented from reacting with CaO impurities in magnesite. The mixing homogeneity of magnesite particles and ZrO 2 particles and the direct contact between ZrO 2 and CaO impurities in magnesite has a crucial effect on the formation of intergranular CaZrO 3 phases. Furthermore, the intergranular CaZrO 3 phases could enhance the bonding of magnesia grains and have great potential for improving the service performance of magnesia.

Theophylline Acetaldehyde as the Initial Product in Doxophylline Metabolism in Human Liver

Xiaohua Zhao,Hong Ma,Qiusha Pan,Haiyi Wang,Xingkai Qian,Peifang Song,Liwei Zou,Mingqing Mao,Shuyue Xia,Guangbo Ge,Ling Yang

Doxophylline (DOXO) and theophylline are widely used as bronchodilators for treating asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and DOXO has a better safety profile than theophylline. How DOXO’s metabolism and disposition affect its antiasthmatic efficacy and safety remains to be explored. In this study, the metabolites of DOXO were characterized. A total of nine metabolites of DOXO were identified in vitro using liver microsomes from human and four other animal species. Among them, six metabolites were reported for the first time. The top three metabolites were theophylline acetaldehyde (M1), theophylline-7-acetic acid (M2), and etophylline (M4). A comparative analysis of DOXO metabolism in human using liver microsomes, S9 fraction, and plasma samples demonstrated the following: 1) The metabolism of DOXO began with a cytochrome P450 (P450)–mediated, rate-limiting step at the C ring and produced M1, the most abundant metabolite in human liver microsomes. However, in human plasma, the M1 production was rather low. 2) M1 was further converted to M2 and M4, the end products of DOXO metabolism in vivo, by non-P450 dismutase in the cytosol. This dismutation process also relied on the ratio of NADP+/NADPH in the cell. These findings for the first time elucidated the metabolic sites and routes of DOXO metabolism in human.

Foxl2a and Foxl2b are involved in midbrain-hindbrain boundary development in zebrafish

Jian Zhou,Yan-Jing Yang,Rui-Hai Gan,Yang Wang,Zhi Li,Xiao-Juan Zhang,Jian-Fang Gui,Li Zhou

Foxl2 plays conserved central function in ovarian differentiation and maintenance in several fish species. However, its expression pattern and function in fish embryogenesis are still largely unknown. In this study, we first presented a sequential expression pattern of zebrafish foxl2a and foxl2b during embryo development. They were predominantly expressed in the cranial paraxial mesoderm (CPM) and cranial venous vasculature (CVV) during somitogenesis and subsequently expressed in the pharyngeal arches after 48 h post-fertilization (hpf). Then, we compared the brain structures among zebrafish wildtype (WT) and three homozygous foxl2 mutants ( foxl2a −/− , foxl2b −/− and foxl2a −/− ; foxl2b −/− ) and found the reduction of the fourth ventricle in the three foxl2 mutants, especially in foxl2a −/− ; foxl2b −/− mutant. Finally, we detected several key transcription factors involved in the gene regulatory network of midbrain-hindbrain boundary (MHB) patterning, such as wnt1 , en1b and pax2a . Their expression levels were obviously downregulated in MHB of foxl2a −/− and foxl2a −/− ; foxl2b −/− mutants. Thus, we suggest that Foxl2a and Foxl2b are involved in MHB and the fourth ventricle development in zebrafish. The current study provides insights into the molecular mechanism underlying development of brain ventricular system.

Antifungal activities of Equol against Candida albicans in vitro and in vivo

Fen Wang,Jinping Zhang,Qian Zhang,Zhangyong Song,Caiyan Xin

Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen that can cause systemic infections in immunocompromised individuals. Morphological transition and biofilm formation are major virulence factors of C. albicans. Moreover, biofilm enhances resistance to antifungal agents. Therefore, it is urgent to identify new and effective compounds to target the biofilm of C. albicans. In the present study, the antifungal activities of equol against C. albicans were investigated. In vitro, the microdilution analysis and spot assay result showed that equol exhibited potent inhibitory activities against C. albicans. Further investigations confirmed that the antifungal effects of equol involved interference with the transition from yeast to hypha and biofilm formation of C. albicans. In addition, transcriptome sequencing and reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis showed that equol significantly downregulated the expression of several genes in the Ras1-cAMP-PKA pathway related to hyphae and biofilm formation and significantly upregulated the expression of the negative transcriptional repressors RFG1 and TUP1. Moreover, equol effectively reduced the production of cAMP, a key messenger in the Ras1-cAMP-PKA pathway, while supplementation with cAMP partly rescued the equol-induced defects in hyphal development. Furthermore, in a mouse model of systemic candidiasis (SC), equol treatment significantly decreased the fungal burden (liver, kidneys, and lung) in mice and local tissue damage, while enhancing the production of interleukin-10 (IL-10). Together, these findings confirm that equol is a potentially effective agent for treatment of SC.

Detecting Surface Hydration of Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) in Solution in situ

Xu Li,Bolin Li,Xiaodong Zhang,Chengcheng Li,Zhirui Guo,Dongshan Zhou,Xiaolin Lu

Understanding the interfacial molecular structures of antifouling polymers in solutions is extremely important in research and applications related to chemistry, biology, and medicine. However, it is generally challenging to probe such buried solid/liquid interfaces in situ. We herein report a molecular-level study on detecting the interfacial molecular structures of an antifouling hydrogel material, poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA), in contact with water and bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution in situ using sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. To compare to and validate our in situ experiments, molecular-level structures of the substrate/PHEMA interface before and after water exposure were also detected. The detected strong O–H vibrational signals from water and hydroxyethyl and carbonyl vibrational signals from PHEMA prove that the PHEMA surface hydration was attributed to the interaction between water and PHEMA side hydrophilic groups. SFG experimental results verify that the adsorbed BSA molecules at the PHEMA/solution interface were disorderly arranged, supported by data from the laser scanning confocal microscopic (LSCM) experiment. This indicates the weak interaction between the BSA molecules and PHEMA surface. This direct detection of the surface hydrated structures of PHEMA sheds light on understanding the interfacial properties of antifouling materials in aqueous environments. The capability reported here to probe the PHEMA/solution interface and the hidden substrate/PHEMA interface after water exposure can be applied to investigate a broad range of interfaces of antifouling materials.
