One-step flotation–activation for CGFS-derived catalysts. • Ni- and K-modified catalysts show distinct reforming pathways. • Ni-based catalysts achieve high tar conversion (97.2%) with coke resistance. • K favors CH 4 formation while Ni enhances H 2 -rich syngas production. Efficient and stable catalysts are essential for biomass-tar reforming in sustainable biomass gasification systems that utilize low-cost solid waste feedstocks. In this study, coal gasification fine slag (CGFS) was processed by saline flotation to enrich the residual carbon fraction and remove ash content, yielding a support material with enhanced catalyst surface area and pore volume. Low-concentration saline flotation produced supports with greater specific surface areas (S BET ), while high-concentration saline flotation yielded catalysts with superior catalytic performance. Catalytic performance was primarily determined by the nature of the metal loading. Ni-loaded catalysts (Ni4) achieved higher tar-conversion rates and CO yields than K-loaded counterparts (K4), with substantially greater H 2 production. Conversely, K4 produced higher CH 4 yields than Ni4, attributable to enhanced high-temperature methanation leading to higher CH 4 selectivity, whereas Ni-based catalysts showed superior overall catalytic performance and anti-coking ability, attributable to their unique FeNi 3 alloy active centers. Furthermore, regeneration tests demonstrated that both Ni4 and K4 catalysts retained considerable tar conversion capability after three reaction–regeneration cycles, highlighting their potential for cyclic utilization. These results demonstrate the potential of CGFS as a low-cost tar conversion catalyst. Download: Download high-res image (462KB) Download: Download full-size image

Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are promising electrode candidates for aqueous batteries because the inevitable interstitial water is generally thought to have little impact on battery performance. Currently, mounting researches have focused on optimizing PBA properties by varying transition metal composition, but less attention has been paid to interstitial water, especially in alkali metal-ion deficient PBAs with large cavities. Here, we employ the water-rich K 0.01 Mn[Cr(CN) 6 ] 0.74 ·4.75H 2 O as the negative electrode to study the effect of interstitial water. It is found that during de-potassiation, the electrode undergoes dehydration, which negatively impacts kinetics, distorts structure, and raises charging potential. A cation-self-shielding strategy involving Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) in the electrolyte to secure the water-rich state is then proposed. The built 1.82 V all-Prussian blue aqueous K-ion battery delivers a high practical specific energy of ~76 Wh kg −1 over 1.5 V (based on the total mass of active materials in both electrodes). This study reveals the significance of interstitial water on the kinetics of PBA negative electrodes and promotes the exploration of water-containing electrodes to develop high-voltage aqueous rechargeable batteries for energy storage applications.

In this study, the magnetic composite catalyst, CuFe2O4 modified Co-Al layered double hydroxide supported by alkali-activated N,S-codoped biochar (CFO/CoAl-LDH@K-NSBC) was developed to activate ozone to degrade methylene blue (MB). The MB degradation efficiency of the CFO/CoAl-LDH@K-NSBC/O3 system was 96.30% in 7 min, and it still remained at 92.85% after 5 cycles. Notably, in the pond water matrix, the degradation efficiency only decreased by 6.44% after five cycles, which confirmed its remarkable stability and application prospects. Electrochemical analysis revealed that the comodification of CFO and CoAl-LDH significantly enhanced the charge transfer and catalytic activity of K-NSBC. The results of material characterization and quenching experiments showed that highly exposed active sites, including oxygen vacancies (Ov), Co3+/Co2+, Fe3+/Fe2+, Cu2+/Cu+, pyridinic N, graphitic N and thiophenic S, synergistically drove O3 activation to generate 1O2, ·OH, and ·O2– to participate in MB degradation, among which 1O2 was the main reactive oxygen species. This study provides a novel approach for the preparation of environmentally friendly biochar-based multimetal oxides with high catalytic activity.

The fabrication of supercapacitors with outstanding performance is presented with a distinct defect-rich nanostructures. A one-pot, energy-efficient method for synthesizing defective manganese dioxide nanowires doped with potassium (K 0.35 MnO 2 ) was developed. The introduction of potassium ions at 35 % birnessite resulted in a significant increase in lattice defects and an improvement in conductivity. Addition of KOH induces a phase transition from α-MnO 2 to δ-MnO 2 . These imperfections result in a greater quantity of active sites, which are crucial for the process of energy storage. The K 0.35 MnO 2 structure demonstrates a 405F/g increased capacity at a current density of 1 A/g. The asymmetric supercapacitor (K 0.35 MnO 2 /AC) that was manufactured exhibits a capacitance of 106.4F/g when operating at 1 A/g, while maintaining a maximum energy density of 71.5 Wh kg −1 and a power density of 672 W kg −1 . Furthermore, 92.7 % of the initial capacitance of the device is retained even after 8,000 cycles at 20 A/g. This study presents novel insights into the production of defective materials for energy storage applications through the utilization of a one-pot process as opposed to the multi-step method. In order to produce high-performance supercapacitors for practical applications, the results indicate that defect engineering is a crucial factor.

The thermal dehydrogenation process of the KOH-containing Mg(NH2)2–2LiH system was systematically investigated by identifying changes in the structure and composition of its components by XRD and FTIR. During ball milling, the added KOH reacts with Mg(NH2)2 and LiH to produce MgO, KH and Li2K(NH2)3. During the initial heating process (<120 °C), the newly formed KH and Li2K(NH2)3 react with Mg(NH2)2 and LiH to yield MgNH, LiNH2 and Li3K(NH2)4 along with hydrogen release. Raising the temperature to 185 °C results in a reaction between Mg(NH2)2, MgNH and LiH that gives Li2Mg2N3H3 as the product and further releases hydrogen. As the temperature is increased to 220 °C, Li2Mg2N3H3 reacts with LiNH2 and LiH to produce Li2MgN2H2 and H2. Meanwhile, two parallel reactions between Li2Mg2N3H3, Li3K(NH2)4 and LiH also generate additional hydrogen. Specifically, the KH and Li2K(NH2)3, formed in situ during ball milling, serve as reactants in the dehydrogenation reaction of the Mg(NH2)2–2LiH system, which is responsible for the significantly improved thermodynamics and kinetics of hydrogen storage.

N -ethylcarbazole, as a liquid organic hydrogen carrier, has shown great promise in the field of hydrogen storage technology. The development of efficient and stable catalyst for producing H 2 through N -ethylcarbazole dehydrogenation is crucial for its practical application. In this study, a series of mesoporous Al 2 O 3 -supported Pt catalysts with K modification were developed for N -ethylcarbazole dehydrogenation. These catalysts were characterization using various techniques including XRD, N 2 adsorption–desorption, TEM, 27 Al MAS NMR, XPS, NH 3 -TPD, H 2 -TPR, CO-FTIR, and Py-IR, providing detailed structural information to elucidate the structure–activity relationship. Mesoporous Al 2 O 3 was found to possess significant amounts of coordinatively unsaturated pentacoordinate Al 3+ , which greatly promotes the dispersion of Pt species for the formation of small Pt particles. The addition of K was observed to modulate the electronic structure of Pt, reduce the acidity of the catalysts, and inhibit the sintering of Pt. These synergetic effects led to Pt 3.0 /K 3.0 -Al 2 O 3 -m achieving remarkable performance in dodecahydro- N -ethylcarbazole dehydrogenation at 180 °C and 101 kPa, delivering a dodecahydro- N -ethylcarbazole conversion of 100 %, H 2 release amount of 5.63 wt% and dehydrogenation efficiency of 97.10 %. Additionally, this catalyst demonstrated high efficiency in the dehydrogenation of dodecahydro- N -propylcarbazole, octahydro-2-methylindole, and octahydro-1,2-dimethylindole, achieving dehydrogenation efficiencies of 99.60 %, 100 % and 100 %, respectively. These findings provide valuable knowledge for the rational design of efficient metal-based catalysts for liquid organic hydrogen carriers in hydrogen storage systems.

Molten salt-assisted pyrolysis has emerged as an effective strategy for engineering defective/doped g-C 3 N 4 photocatalysts for CO 2 reduction. While K + incorporation enhances interlayer charge transport, excessive K + generates detrimental nitrogen vacancies that destabilize the heptazine framework and compromise carrier mobility. Herein, we developed S/K co-doped graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) with tunable nitrogen vacancies (denoted SWCN-M) via molten salt (KCl-LiCl) pyrolysis of sulfur-containing supramolecular precursors (melamine with thiourea or thioacetamide). The nitrogen vacancy concentration is precisely modulated by the choice of sulfur precursor (thiourea vs. thioacetamide) to optimize the synergy effect of K + -N-vacancy, and eventually boosting photocatalytic performance. The thiourea-derived SWCN-M TU achieves a CO evolution rate of 165.7 μmol g −1 h −1 , outperforming its thioacetamide analogue (SWCN-M TAA , 90.4 μmol g −1 h −1 ), pristine WCN (53.8 μmol g −1 h −1 ), and K-doped WCN-M (64.3 μmol g −1 h −1 ) by factors of 1.8, 3.1, and 2.6, respectively. DFT calculation results reveal that S-doping induces charge localization, elevating the N-vacancy formation energy via Coulombic repulsion with K + . This work advances the rational design of vacancy-engineered carbon nitride for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction

Aqueous potassium-ion batteries are long-term pursued, due to their excellent performance and intrinsic superiority in safe, low-cost storage for portable and grid-scale applications. However, the notorious issues of K-ion battery chemistry are the inferior cycling stability and poor rate performance, due to the inevitably destabilization of the crystal structure caused by K-ions with pronouncedly large ionic radius. Here, we resolve such issues by reconstructing commercial vanadium oxide (α-V2O5) into the bronze form, i.e., δ-K0.5V2O5 (KVO) nanobelts, as cathode materials with layered structure of enlarged space and anisotropic pathways for K-ion storage. Specifically, it can deliver a high capacity as 116 mAh g–1 at the 1 C-rate, an outstanding rate capacity of 65 mAh g–1 at 50 C, and a robust cyclic stability with 88.2% capacity retention after 1,000 cycles at 1 C. When coupled with organic anode in a full-cell configuration, the KVO electrodes can output 95 mAh g–1 at 1 C and cyclic stability with 77.3% capacity retention after 20,000 cycles at 10 C. According to experimental and calculational results, the ultradurable cyclic performance is assigned to the robust structural reversibility of the KVO electrode, and the ultrahigh-rate capability is attributed to the anisotropic pathways with improved electrical conductivity in KVO nanobelts. In addition, applying a 22 M KCF3SO3 water-in-salt electrolyte can impede the dissolving issues of the KVO electrode and further stabilize the battery cyclic performance. Lastly, the as-designed AKIBs can operate with superior low-temperature adaptivity even at −30 °C. Overall, the KVO electrode can serve as a paradigm toward developing more suitable electrode materials for high-performance AKIBs.

Summary TWIK-related acid-sensitive K + channel-2 (TASK-2, encoded by Kcnk5 ) is essential in cell biological processes, by regulating transmembrane K + balance. In the present study, we aimed to clarify the role of TASK-2 in renal fibrosis and explore the underlying mechanism. We found that TASK-2 level was elevated in the renal tubular UUO- and UIR-induced renal fibrosis as well as in patients with renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis. Knockout of Kcnk5 or inhibition of TASK-2 in renal tubules attenuated G2/M cell-cycle arrest and alleviated renal fibrosis. Mechanistically, demethylase fat mass and obesity-associated protein (FTO) reduced N6-adenosine methylation (m6A) of Kcnk5 mRNA following renal fibrosis. FTO deficiency attenuated the upregulation of TASK-2 and renal fibrosis. The results demonstrated the crucial role of TASK-2 in renal fibrosis, which is conducive to a better understanding of the pathogenesis of renal fibrosis. TASK-2 may be a potential treatment strategy to alleviate the development of renal fibrosis.

Solid-state biomimetic channels are attractive for label-free ion analysis, but their performance is often undermined by fragile functional layers confined within narrow nanopores. Here we report a pore-in self-assembly strategy that integrates silica nanotubes (SiO 2 NTs) into a glass microtube (GMT) to construct a robust, label-free potassium ion (K + ) sensor. Thiol-functionalized SiO 2 NTs, possessing hollow tubular morphology and abundant surface anchoring groups, are capillary-wicked into the GMT lumen where they spontaneously assemble into a continuous three-dimensional porous scaffold. This hierarchical architecture effectively stabilizes the ion transport pathway and recognition sites, preventing functional disintegration under electric field-induced translocation. This platform enables detection of target potassium ion down to 0.597 μM, even at concentrations of other metal ions up to five times higher. Furthermore, by leveraging the reversible folding behavior of G4 DNA in response to potassium ion and 18-crown-6 ether, an INHIBIT logic gate was constructed that translates dual chemical inputs into discrete electrical output. This pore-in architecture combines simplicity, label-free operation, and robustness, demonstrating broad potential for intelligent ion sensing and molecular logic operations in complex environments.

A new iron-based superconductor Li x (C 3 H 10 N 2 ) y Fe 2 Se 2 was successfully synthesized via the novel ammonothermal technique. After post-annealing, the superconducting transition temperature T c changes from 36 K to 45 K, which is confirmed by measurements of the magnetic susceptibility and the electrical resistivity. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements have revealed that the crystal structure keeps the same after post-annealing at 130 °C for 10 h. Hall coefficient and magnetoresistance (MR) have been measured on the annealed samples, indicating the role of electrons as the dominant charge carriers.

Pressure-driven reconstruction forms Ni-O-K single-atom interfaces. • Near-equilibrium CO 2 conversion (∼58%) with ∼100% CO selectivity. • Exceptional stability over 200 h without sintering or deactivation. • Ni-O-K sites lower E a and suppress methanation. • Carboxyl pathway dominates over formate route. Achieving simultaneous high activity, selectivity, and stability in single-atom catalysts (SACs) under high-temperature conditions remains a significant challenge, primarily due to the difficulty in precisely controlling the coordination environment of metal centers. Here, we demonstrate that alkali ion (e.g., K + ) modification of both Ni single atoms and their carbon nitride (CN) support enables exceptional performance in the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction. The resulting Ni@K-CN catalyst achieves near-equilibrium CO 2 conversion with nearly 100% CO selectivity across a broad temperature range (400–600 ℃), alongside remarkable long-term stability. This performance substantially surpasses that of the K-free analogue and ranks among the best-reported non-noble metal RWGS catalysts. Operando studies reveal that the catalyst undergoes a thermodynamically driven in-situ reconstruction under high pressure reaction conditions, forming atomically dispersed Ni-O-K interfacial sites within a restructured carbon nitride matrix. Density functional theory calculations reveal that these sites markedly lower the apparent activation energy ( E a = 41.5 vs. 131.4 kJ·mol −1 ), modulate the electronic structure of Ni and surface-adsorbate interactions, and thereby promote a low-energy-barrier carboxyl pathway while kinetically suppressing methanation. This work establishes a design strategy based on alkali-mediated dynamic reconstruction to create highly stable and selective SACs for demanding high-temperature catalytic processes.
