The development of efficient and stable photocatalysts to solve environmental issues is essential and remains a big challenge. In this work, flower-like CoNiFe-LDH is deposited in situ on g-C3N4 nanosheets, successfully constructing a Z-scheme heterojunction CoNiFe-LDH/g-C3N4 photocatalyst for the photoreduction of CO2 and photodegradation of MB dye. The synthesized nanohybrid shows superior photocatalytic CO2 performance (42.04 μmol g−1 h−1) and fast photodegradation MB performance (0.1057 min−1). The improved photocatalytic performance was attributed to the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction with matched energy bands, and the intimate heterojunction contact interface, which significantly enhanced the interfacial charge transfer rate and improved the separation efficiency of electron–hole pairs. Moreover, the photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on PL, photocurrent responses, EIS, and EPR experiments. This work can shed light on further application for environmental problems of Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts.

ZnTi-LDH nanosheets have been synthesized as photocatalysts for selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BA) to benzaldehyde (BAD) under visible light irradiation. Based on UV–vis DRS, in-situ FTIR and XPS results, it was revealed that BA would be efficiently chemisorbed and activated on ZnTi-LDH forming the surface coordination species, which contributed to harvesting visible light and induced the photocatalytic reaction. The ESR spectra suggested that oxygen vacancies would be produced in ZnTi-LDHs after the adsorption of BA molecules. More exposed surface OH groups would induce more oxygen vacancies, which would serve as the centers for capturing photoelectrons from the photoexcited surface coordination species and act as active sites for enhanced O 2 adsorption and activation, resulting outstanding photocatalytic activity. Finally, a possible mechanism was proposed to illustrate the photocatalytic process which mediated by surface coordination species formed by the interaction between ZnTi-LDH and BA.

Electrochemical water splitting (EWS) is a highly clean and efficient method for high-purity hydrogen production. Unfortunately, EWS suffers from the sluggish and complex oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics at anode. At present, the efficient, stable, and low-cost non-precious metal based OER electrocatalyst is still a great and long-term challenge for the future industrial application of EWS technology. Herein, we develop a simple and fast approach for gram-scale synthesis of flower-like cobalt-based layered double hydroxides nanosheet aggregates by ultrasonic synthesis, which show outstanding electrocatalytic performance for the oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline media, such as preeminent stability, small overpotential of 300 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 and small Tafel slope of 110 mV·dec −1 .

Glass fiber reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene composites (PTFE/GF composites) with the excellent performance have been given considerable attention due to their increasing applications in large architecture areas such as stadiums, amusement parks, parking lots, etc. However, the brittleness of glass fiber can hinder the performance of PTFE/GF composites. The PTFE/MLDH (modified ZnAl-layered double hydroxide)/GF composites inspired by layer-layer structure are prepared via the multi-layered dipping method, which consists of GF acting as a reinforcement, PTFE acting as matrix, and MLDH acting as the layer-layer structure. The results of study show that the high strength and surperflexibility of PTFE/MLDH/GF composites are higher than pure PTFE/GF composites. Especially, when the PTFE/MLDH/GF composites contain 1.6 wt% MLDH, the folding endurance reaches up to 39 035 times, the tensile strength reaches up to 163.57 MPa, and strain reaches up to 8.33%. More significantly, the strength and surperflexibility are illustrated by a mechanism model and it is used to further broaden the application of PTFE/GF composites in mobile building materials. Moreover, it is discovered that the PTFE/MLDH/GF composites have unique translucent performance and excellent ultraviolet-shielding properties in this study, which further broaden its range of applications.

A novel heterojunction photocatalyst consisting of three-dimensional (3D) flower-like MgAl LDH and acidified g-C 3 N 4 (CN-H) was first developed by a simple facile coating method. The obtained MgAl LDH/CN-H samples were thoroughly characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analyzer. The detailed results demonstrated that g-C 3 N 4 could transform from a generally two-dimensional layered structure into special cavity-like structure after acid treatment. CN-H increased specific surface to expose more active reaction sites in comparison to pristine g-C 3 N 4 . MgAl LDH and CN-H with matched band gaps were tightly bonded to form heterojunction structure by strong electrostatic intercalation. The combination could obviously boost the separation of photogenerated carriers. The as-prepared MgAl LDH/CN-H exhibited high photocatalytic performance in the degrading on typical antibiotic tetracycline hydrochloride (TC ⋅ HCl), of which degradation rate was 6.5 and even 22 times higher than that of MgAl LDH and pristine g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. The synthesis of MgAl LDH/CN-H heterojunction photocatalyst could have some positive suggestions for the rational construction of new photocatalysts and also has great application prospect in the degradation of environmental pollutants.

Ni–Al layered double hydroxide with nitrate anions as interlayer building blocks was synthesized by a dual-anion intercalating strategy of hydroxyl and nitrate anions during a facile co-precipitation process. In this case, nitrate anions with low charge densities are capable to expand the interplanar spacing between host layers of Ni–Al layered double hydroxide in the replacement of pristine carbonate anions, benefiting to the diffusion of electrolyte ions to active sites within electrodes. Moreover, the optimization for packed arrangement of Ni–Al layered double hydroxide with nitrate anions nanosheets can be effectively realized by modulating reactant concentrations, leading to the formation of nanolayered structure in favor of increasing electrolyte accessible active sites within electrodes. The optimized Ni–Al layered double hydroxide with nitrate anions achieves a high specific capacitance of 1616 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 together with a capacitance retention of 82% at 10 A g −1 and good cycling stability.

It is a highly desired yet challenging task to replace rare and expensive noble metal catalysts with inexpensive and earth-abundant metal ones in electrochemical sustainable chemistry field. Herein, the bimetallic zinc-cobalt layered double hydroxide nanosheets (ZnCo-LDH NS) have been facilely synthesized using 2-methylimidazole as a bifunctional alkali source (OH − ) and a morphological controlling reagent by the one-step room-temperature reaction. The mechanism study shows that the weak organic base of 2-methylimidazole-induced slow release of OH − in water/ethanol is the controlling factor for the formation of the LDH nanosheets. The ZnCo-LDH NS modified on glassy carbon electrode exhibited an overpotential of 385 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 108 mV dec −1 in 1.0 M KOH for oxygen evolution reaction , outperforming the corresponding the monometal oxides of Zn-OH, Co-OH, the NaOH produced ZnCo-LDH microparticles , and even the benchmark catalyst of RuO 2 at high current density. Characterization experiments indicated that the outstanding electrocatalytic activity can be ascribed to the nanosheet-induced surface area effect, excellent electronic conductivity, and the coupling effect between Zn 2+ and Co 2+ in the material. This work offers a facile and environmental-friendly method for synthesising LDH nanosheets bearing enhanced oxygen evolution reaction activity.

Highly efficient and low-cost oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts have been urgently needed for the development of renewable hydrogen energy via water electrolysis. Herein, a core-shell NiO nanoparticles decorated carbon sphere (NiO/C) and NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanocomposite (NiO/C@NiFe-LDH) was prepared by a calcination-hydrothermal synthesis approach. In this nanocomposite, NiO/C as the core were derived from Ni based metal organic frameworks (Ni-MOFs), which not only provide a porous and conductive carbon support for NiFe-LDH nanosheets to expose active sites, but also offer a synergistic active site for NiFe-LDH nanosheets. The structure and morphology of NiO/C@NiFe-LDH were mainly characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption test. The OER catalytic activity of NiO/C@NiFe-LDH was optimized by adjusting the ratio between NiO/C and NiFe-LDH and adding bridging agents. Under the optimum conditions, the overpotential at 10 mA cm−2 for NiO/C@NiFe-LDHs is only 299 mV(vs RHE), lower than that of commercial RuO2 (330 mV). Besides, the NiO/C@NiFe-LDH exhibits a good stability in 10-hour testing. These results show that the ingenious combination of different OER catalysts may be an effective strategy to prepare low-cost OER catalysts with good performance.

Magnetic material as adsorbent can provide effective remove and quickly separate of pollutant in wastewater treatment. A magnetic Fe 3 O 4 /MgAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) composite was prepared by low saturation coprecipitation in the dispersed Fe 3 O 4 suspension. The characterization of XRD, TEM and FTIR revealed that the Fe 3 O 4 /MgAl-LDH composite was combined with Fe 3 O 4 and MgAl-LDH. This provided the composite of magnetic property which improved the separation of solid from aqueous solution. The adsorption of reactive red (RR), congo red (CR) and acid red 1 (AR1) by magnetic Fe 3 O 4 /MgAl-LDH composite depended upon the adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial concentration and temperature. The adsorption of the three red dyes reached equilibrium at 30 min and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. The equilibrium adsorption isotherm data well fitted the Langmuir model for RR, Freundlich model for CR and AR1. Thermodynamic results demonstrated that the adsorption processes were spontaneous, endothermic for RR and CR or exothermic for AR1. The adsorption capacities changed insignificantly between solution pH 2–10 and the maximum were 97, 253 and 92 mg/g for RR, CR and AR1, respectively. Moreover, the solid composite can be quickly separated from the aqueous solution by an external magnet before and after adsorption process. This indicated that the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 /MgAl-LDH composite was an effective adsorbent for red dyes removal with quick separation.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays an important role in angiogenesis and is highly expressed in carcinoma, which make it an important target for tumor targeting therapy. Neuroblastoma is the main cause for cancer-related death in children. Like most solid tumors, it is also accompanied with the overexpression of VEGF. Doxorubicin Hydrochloride (DOX), a typical chemotherapeutic agent, exhibits efficient anticancer activities for various cancers. However, DOX, without targeting ability, usually causes severe damage to normal tissues. To overcome the shortages, we designed a novel nano-composite, which is Bevacizumab (Bev) modified SiO 2 @LDH nanoparticles (SiO 2 @LDH-Bev), loading with DOX to achieve targeting ability and curative efficiency. SiO 2 @LDH-DOX and SiO 2 @LDH-Bev-DOX nanoparticles were synthesized and the physicochemical properties were characterized by TEM detection, Zeta potential analysis, FTIR, Raman and XPS analysis. Then in vitro and in vivo anti-neuroblastoma efficiency, targeting ability and mechanisms of anti-carcinoma and anti-angiogenesis of SiO 2 @LDH-Bev-DOX were explored. Our results indicated that we obtained the core-shell structure SiO 2 @LDH-Bev with an average diameter of 253 ± 10 nm and the amount of conjugated Bev was 4.59 ± 0.38 μg/mg SiO 2 @LDH-Bev. SiO 2 @LDH-Bev-DOX could improve the cellular uptake and the targeting effect of DOX to brain and tumor, enhance the anti-neuroblastoma and anti-angiogenesis efficiency both in vitro and in vivo, and alleviate side effects of DOX sharply, especially hepatic injury. In addition, we also demonstrated that angiogenesis inhibitory effect was mediated by DOX and VEGF triggered signal pathways, including PI3K/Akt, Raf/MEK/ERK, and adhesion related pathways. In summary, SiO 2 @LDH-Bev could be a potential VEGF targeting nanocarrier applied in VEGF positive cancer therapy. Statement of Significance This paper explored that a novel core-shell structure nanomaterial SiO 2 @LDH and modified SiO 2 @LDH with Bevacizumab (Bev) to form a new tumor vasculature targeting nanocarrier SiO 2 @LDH-Bev as vector of DOX, which was not reported before. The results indicated that SiO 2 @LDH-Bev could improve the VEGF targeting ability, anti-neuroblastoma and anti-angiogenesis efficiency of DOX. At the same time, SiO 2 @LDH-Bev-DOX could erase the cardiac toxicity and hepatic injury coming from DOX. Tube formation showed SiO 2 @LDH-Bev-DOX had the strongest effect on inhibiting angiogenesis among all the four formulations. SiO 2 @LDH-Bev-DOX could downregulate expression of p-VEGFR and inhibit activation of the Raf/MEK/ERK, p38MAPK, PI3K/Akt and FAK signaling pathways to achieve the goal of anti-angiogenesis. This work provides a novel system for the safe and efficient use of Bev and DOX on Neuroblastoma and explores the mechanism of the function of nano carrier in cancer therapy both in vitro and in vivo.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have gained significant attention as emerging pollutants and are increasingly detected in aquatic environments. Therefore, it is imperative to investigate the efficient removal of NSAIDs from water systems. In this study, a magnetic LDH with three-dimensional hollow structure (Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-67@Co-Ni LDH) was synthesized using ZIF-67 as a template for the removal of carprofen (CPF) and flurbiprofen (FLU) from water environments. The adsorption process of CPF and FLU on Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-67@Co-Ni LDH and the competitive adsorption between these two NSAIDs were investigated. The adsorption mechanism was explored by experimental analysis and theoretical calculation. Results demonstrated that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Liu isotherm model can better fit the kinetic and isotherm data, and according to the thermodynamic data analysis, the adsorption process was exothermic, spontaneous and stable. The adsorption capacity of CPF and FLU on Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-67@Co-Ni LDH can reach 856.2 mg/g and 797.5 mg/g. Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-67@Co-Ni LDH exhibited high adsorption capacity for CPF and FLU in actual environment water, with stronger affinity towards CPF when both NSAIDs coexisted simultaneously. The three-dimensional hollow structure enhanced the adsorption capacity of Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-67@Co-Ni LDH, making it a promising adsorbent for NSAIDs.

Transition-metal based layered double hydroxides (TM-LDHs) have attracted widespread attention due to their advantages for the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, their sluggish and unstable reconstruction during the OER has seriously limited their applications in water electrolysis at industrial-level current density. Herein, FeOOH/FeNiCo-LDH heterogeneous nanosheets (2.1 nm in thickness) are uniformly integrated on honeycomb-channel N-doped carbon (FeOOH/FeNiCo-LDH/HCNC) through a self-sacrificing and dual-ion etching strategy. Thermodynamically favoured hydrogen/electron-capturing ability of FeOOH together with kinetically favoured rapid mass/electron transfer efficiency of conductive HCNC collaboratively accelerates the reconstruction of FeNiCo-LDH to generate highly active and stable FeNiCoOOH species, which displays an optimal reaction pathway with reduced energy barrier for the OER. Consequently, FeOOH/FeNiCo-LDH/HCNC exhibits superior OER activity in both alkaline freshwater (η10 = 258 mV with Tafel slope of 32.4 mV dec−1) and alkaline natural seawater (η10 = 296 mV with Tafel slope of 54.7 mV dec−1). When applied in anion exchange membrane electrolyzer as OER electrocatalyst, FeOOH/FeNiCo-LDH/HCNC achieves outstanding stability with low cell-voltage increase rates of 1.7 mV h−1 (freshwater) and 1.5 mV h−1 (seawater) over 120 h at the industrially required current density of 500 mA cm−2. This study proposed an ingenious reconstruction strategy for advanced TM-LDH electrocatalysts toward industrial applications.
