Hydrophobic-force-driven adsorption of bisphenol A from aqueous solution by polyethylene glycol diacrylate hydrogel microsphere

Du Hongxue,Shi Shuyun,Liu Wei,Che Guangbo,Piao Mingyue

Polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogel microsphere was synthesized by UV-assisted reverse emulsion polymerization as an efficient adsorbent for water purification. Optical microscopy and TEM proved its spherical and hollow structure, while XRD pattern proved that it was amorphous with limited crystallinity. Abundant oxygen-containing functional groups such as hydroxyl were detected by FTIR. The hydrogels exhibited low swelling capacities ranging from 0.19 to 0.77 g/g in water and would decrease in salty solutions. The effects of operation parameters on the bisphenol A (BPA) adsorption were studied, including the polymer composition between PEGDA and polyethylene glycol methacrylate (PEGMA), initial concentration of BPA, pH, and operation temperature. The resulting hydrogel, especially for PDM 2 (the ratio between PEGDA and PEGMA is 2), was able to effectively enrich BPA in water. The adsorption capacity was nearly stable below pH 8.0 and decreased when beyond 8.0. Thermodynamic parameters reflected that BPA adsorbed by hydrogel was a spontaneous ( ΔG 0  < 0) and exothermic ( ΔH 0  < 0) progress. The adsorption capacity increased with the increase of the concentration of NaCl, exhibiting salinity-enhanced adsorption capacity driven by hydrophobic force. Excellent results were also achieved by applying hydrogel for spiked real surface waters, which accounted for more than 91% compared to simulated solution. As-prepared hydrogel was expected to be good candidate for treatment of endocrine disruptors with lower solubility in water.

Fabrication of a Flowerlike Ag Microsphere Film with Applications in Catalysis and as a SERS Substrate

Qijun Dai,Lu Li,Chungang Wang,Changli Lv,Zhongmin Su,Fang Chai

Graphical Thin films of Ag microflowers (MFs) were fabricated on substrates. SEM studies revealed that the Ag MFs are assembled from thin nanosheets composed of Ag nanoparticles. The potential of the film as a catalyst in the reduction of nitrophenols and as a substrate for surface-enhanced Raman scattering was investigated. Three-dimensional flowerlike Ag microstructures were assembled in situ on a substrate to fabricate Ag microflower (Ag MF) films. The morphology and size of the Ag MFs can be easily controlled by varying the reaction time. The mechanism of growth of Ag MFs was investigated by SEM. The shape evolution revealed that the Ag MFs are assembled from thin nanosheets composed of Ag nanoparticles (NPs), and the elemental composition of the NPs was evidenced by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopic analysis. The potential of the film as a catalyst in the reduction of nitrophenols was investigated. The reusability of the catalyst was estimated by recycling catalysis of 4-nitrophenol. Moreover, the Ag MF film could be used as a versatile substrate for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for detection of Rhodamine 6G with a detection limit as low as 1 × 10 –7 m . The results demonstrated that the Ag MF film exhibits excellent SERS enhancement ability and catalytic activity.

CeO2/Bi2WO6 Heterostructured Microsphere with Excellent Visible-light-driven Photocatalytic Performance for Degradation of Tetracycline Hydrochloride

Fengjun Zhang,Shuang Zou,Tianye Wang,Yuxi Shi,Peng Liu

CeO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterostructured microsphere with excellent and stable photocatalytic activity for degradation tetracyclines was successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal route. The photocatalytic experiments indicated that CeO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterostructured microspheres exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity compared to pure Bi 2 WO 6 in both the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and rhodamine B (RhB) under visible-light irradiation. The 1CeO 2 /2Bi 2 WO 6 exhibited the best photocatalytic activity for degradation of TCH, reaching 91% after 60 min reaction. The results suggested that the particular morphological conformation of the microspheres resulted in smaller size and more uniform morphology so as to increase the specific surface area. Meanwhile, the heterojunction was formed by coupling CeO 2 and Bi 2 WO 6 in the as-prepared microspheres, so that the separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes was dramatically improved and the lifetimes of charge carriers were prolonged. Hence, introduction of CeO 2 could significantly enhance the photocatalytic activity of CeO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterostructured microspheres and facilitate the degradation of TCH. This work provided not only a principle method to synthesize CeO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 with the excellent photocatalytic performance for actual produce, but also a excellent property of the photocatalyst for potential application in photocatalytic treatment of tetracyclines wastewater from pharmaceutical factory.

Jing Li,Jijie Shi,Hui Ren,Junjie Yang,Dan Xiao,Xiaoqin Li,Xinhui Wang,Yong Guo,Zhaoyu Jin

A novel non-enzymatic glucose sensor is developed by directly growing flower-shaped NiCo 2 O 4 microsphere on flexible carbon cloth (NCO/CC) through a one-step electro-deposition with subsequent mild heat treatment. Benefiting from the excellent conductivity between the three-dimensional (3D) structure of NiCo 2 O 4 and CC, as well as the synergic effect between the nickel and cobalt cations, the NCO/CC can not only offer more additional active sites, but also significantly enhance its electrocatalytic performance. Under the optimized conditions, the NCO/CC electrode reveals excellent activity with a broad linear detection range from 10 to 2000 μM, a high sensitivity of 5260 μA mM −1 cm −2 , and a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.2 μM, along with good repeatability and long-term stability. Furthermore, the NCO/CC was successfully utilized to detect glucose in actual beverage samples, showing competitive performance. The straightforward and practical method offers a novel approach to measuring glucose in real-world applications. Novelty statement 3D flower-shaped NiCo 2 O 4 microspheres growing on flexible carbon cloth (NCO/CC) were fabricated by a facile one-step electro-deposition with subsequent mild heat treatment. The fabricated NCO/CC electrode exhibits a wide linear detection range, high selectivity, good reproducibility, and stability towards the detection of glucose.

Dual-Responsive Microsphere Based on Natural Sunflower Pollen for Hemostasis and Repair in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Xinyu Wang,Haoyu Qiu,Chengnan Chu,Kai Wang,Bitao Lu,Chao Yang,Baochen Liu,Guangqian Lan,Weiwei Ding

Noninvasive treatment of inflammatory bowel disease with lower gastrointestinal bleeding is a major clinical challenge. In this study, we designed an orally targeted microsphere based on sunflower pollen microcapsules to localize the site of inflammatory injury and promote hemostasis and tissue repair. Due to the Eudragit and ascorbate palmitate coatings, EL/AP@PS(t+Dex) demonstrates pH- and enzyme-responsive release of loaded drugs and helps to resist the harsh environment of the gastrointestinal tract. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments show the characteristics of inflammation targeting and mucosal adhesion, which reduce the systematic exposure and increase the local drug concentration. In the DSS model, orally administered EL/AP@PS(t+Dex) significantly alleviates hematochezia, inhabits intestinal inflammation, and remarkably promotes the recovery of the intestinal epithelial barrier to reduce the exposure of intestinal microvessels. Furthermore, EL/AP@PS(t+Dex) optimized the composition of intestinal microbiota, which benefits intestinal homeostasis. This finding provides a fundamental solution for the treatment of intestinal bleeding caused by inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Dual cytokine release from microsphere-containing decellularized extracellular matrix immune regulation promotes bone repair and regeneration

Zhaohui Dang,Weihua Huang,Xiayu Cai,Jiandong Ye,Weikang Xu

Most bone filler materials currently achieve bone regeneration by mimicking the natural bone extracellular matrix. However, it is difficult for these materials to replicate the structural functions and bioactivities, including immunomodulation, of natural bone perfectly to reduce inflammation and promote bone regeneration synergistically. Repairing bone defects with scaffolds using a decellularised extracellular matrix (dECM) as a matrix material is an important clinical application and research direction. Here, we processed bovine cancellous bone via an optimised combination of decellularisation methods and preferred dECM, which has the shortest processing time and lowest immunogenicity. Hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS)/poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres loaded with bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) were prepared using the complex emulsion method. The HMS/PLGA microspheres had longer cytokine release periods than did the separate HMS and PLGA microspheres. Composite BMP-2/HMS/PLGA microspheres were used to prepare dual-loaded cytokine scaffolds with bone immunomodulatory capacity, which were prepared from composite BMP-2/HMS/PLGA microspheres to increase the osteogenic activity of the dECM and to adsorb interleukin-4 (IL-4) on the surface of the scaffolds. The results showed that the dECM had good cytocompatibility and mechanical strength, and the composite microspheres and IL-4 further endowed the dECM with an ordered spatiotemporally controlled release function, which could release BMP-2 for more than 4 months in the long term and release IL-4 for approximately 10 days in the short term. The composite scaffold not only effectively promoted the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) but also immunomodulated the M1 to M2 polarisation of macrophages (MPs) and mediated the M2 polarisation of MPs, which in turn promoted the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs, creating a favourable immune microenvironment for bone regeneration. In vivo, the dual drug-loaded scaffolds also exhibited good biocompatibility and significantly superior immunomodulatory bone-enhancing properties compared with those of the other groups. In summary, the combination of dECM scaffolds with cytokine-carrying microspheres and immunomodulatory factors can promote the orderly spatiotemporal release of cytokines, which significantly enhances the bone regeneration and repair effects of dECM scaffolds and is a promising bone filler material for clinical application.

High temperature degradable pullulan microsphere/polymer composite for filtration loss control of water-based drilling fluids

Zhengwen Lin,Fang Li,Xinyu Liu,Junlin Su

The effective control of water-based drilling fluid filtration rates in deep and ultra-deep wells poses a significant challenge. This study introduced a novel approach utilizing pullulan microsphere (PM) grafted with N,N-dimethylacrylamide, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid, and dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride as a filtrate reducer (PM-DAD). The polymer's structure was analyzed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Structural characterization confirmed the successful polymerization and good thermal stability of PM-DAD. PM-DAD showed the pH response characteristics of particle size decreasing with the increase of alkalinity and the temperature response characteristics of degradation into nanoparticles after high temperature aging. The filtration loss and rheological properties of PM-DAD were assessed in accordance with the American Petroleum Institute standards. The rheological evaluation results indicated that PM-DAD could effectively maintain optimal rheological properties of the base mud after aging. PM-DAD showed remarkable filtration loss reduction ability. After aging at 200 °C, the filtration loss of the base mud was 4.7 mL, and that of the base mud containing 15 wt% NaCl was 8.2 mL. The filtration reduction mechanism of PM-DAD was investigated through mud cake analysis, particle size distribution, and X-ray diffraction. The filtration loss reduction mechanism showed that degraded nano PM-DAD intercalated between smectite clay minerals, creating electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonds with the smectite surface, thereby facilitating the formation of a dense filter cake This research not only presents a novel approach for the utilization of pullulan but also offers a new path for controlling high-temperature filtration in water-based drilling fluids.

Large polystyrene microsphere embedded 3D polycaprolactam-6 nanofiber mats with high filtration performance for ultrafine particulates

Yiming Li,Liyuan Zhang,Yanyan Chen,Lei Fang,Wei Bao,Kuanjun Fang

Nanofiber filters often face the challenge of achieving both high filtration efficiency and low pressure drop simultaneously. To address this issue and strike a balance between these two critical parameters, a novel three-dimensional (3D) nanofiber filter with high porosity, integrated with large microspheres, was developed. A microsphere suspension was prepared for one-step spinning, utilizing polycaprolactam-6 (PA-6) and polystyrene (PS) microspheres with large particle sizes to design an innovative PS microsphere/PA-6 nanofiber membrane structure. This membrane was specifically engineered for the filtration of ultrafine particulate matter (PM) with diameters ≤ 1 μm. Through gas jet spinning, PS microspheres were successfully embedded into PA-6 nanofibers, resulting in a “bead chain”-shaped PS microsphere/PA-6 nanofiber membrane with a fluffy, three-dimensional structure. By adjusting the ratio of PS microspheres, the stacking configuration of the nanofiber membrane was optimized. The optimal filtration performance was achieved when the microspheres were incorporated at 1.5 % w/w. Under these conditions, the membrane demonstrated exceptional filtration efficiency of 99.58 ± 0.09 % at a high flow rate, while maintaining a low pressure drop of 105 ± 2 Pa. This combination of high-efficiency filtration and low resistance highlights the superior performance of membrane, making it a promising solution for advanced filtration applications.

Selective recovery of silver from aqueous solutions by poly (glycidyl methacrylate) microsphere modified with trithiocyanuric acid

Chao Xiong,Shixing Wang,Libo Zhang,Ying Li,Yang Zhou,Jinhui Peng

The poly (glycidyl methacrylate) microsphere was modified with trithiocyanuric acid to achieve selective adsorption of silver ions from aqueous solutions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were used to characterize the microsphere. In this study, the effects of pH, initial silver ions concentration and contact time on silver ions adsorption, reusability and selectivity of the microsphere were investigated. Experimental results showed that the removal rate of silver ions reached 96.40% under pH 5, the adsorption equilibrium time was about 14 h and the maximum adsorption capacity was 217.17 mg/g at pH 5. Besides, the microsphere has an excellent selectivity for silver ions among Zn(II), Ni(II), Co(III) and Ge(IIII). The adsorption isotherm of Ag + on T-PGMA fitted the Langmuir isotherm model well and the adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model, suggesting that the main adsorption is chemical monolayer adsorption. Moreover, the microsphere has a high reusability and the absorbability was slightly decreased from 96.29% to 94.01% after four cycles. All the experimental data indicated that the microsphere is very promising for silver ions adsorption from aqueous solutions.

Curcumin-loaded bioadhesive silk fibroin microsphere improves islet transplantation by mitigating oxidative stress and inhibiting apoptosis

Chunhui Yang,Runjie Yu,Ying Zhang,Qian Wang,Di Huang,Yang Cheng,Yixuan Zhu,Xinyue Shen,Yifan Shi,Ying-Zheng Zhao,Qing Yao

Islet transplantation, a form of cell therapy involving the injection of healthy islet cells into the recipient's body for curative treatment of T1DM, often fails due to oxidative stress and inflammatory damage experienced by the transplanted islets. Curcumin, a naturally occurring polyphenol with potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, has been underutilized in islet protection due to challenges associated with its co-delivery and formulation. In this study, we developed bioadhesive curcumin microspheres (PDA/CUR@SF) by incorporating curcumin into a silk fibroin matrix and subsequently coating it with polydopamine to enhance islet adherence. Silk protein acts as a delivery carrier while polydopamine serves as an adhesive agent; both components synergistically provide anti-inflammatory effects. In vitro experiments demonstrated that PDA/CUR@SF enhances islet resistance against oxidative stress and inflammatory damage by improving cell viability and function. In vivo studies showed that PDA/CUR@SF prolongs stabilization of blood glucose levels in diabetic mice receiving islet transplantation while facilitating faster glucose clearance. Further analysis revealed that PDA/CUR@SF protects transplanted islets through co-grafting and promotes neovascularization. Overall, our findings suggest that PDA/CUR@SF offers a rational approach to improve outcomes in transplantation.

A Bifunctional Electrocatalyst of Flower-Like Cr-Doped CoP/Fe2P Microsphere for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Yu Yan,Dongxiao Li,Zhimin Guo,Hao Ren,Yubiao Huang,Bei Yan,Ruihuan Zhao,Xin Yao

Developing efficient, low-price non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts for overall water splitting in alkaline medium remains a formidable challenge. In our work, Cr-doped CoP/Fe2P (Cr-CoP/Fe2P) flower-like microsphere was synthesized through a simple hydrothermal and phosphating process. The resulting Cr-CoP/Fe2P electrocatalyst shows significantly enhanced oxygen evolution reaction performance (262 mV @ 10 mA cm-2) and has a satisfactory hydrogen evolution reaction performance (114 mV @ 10 mA cm-2), coupled with favorable stability in an alkaline medium. Furthermore, when assembling Cr-CoP/Fe2P into an electrolytic cell, the two-electrode system can provide a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a voltage of 1.61 V. At high current density, the performance of the electrolytic cell composed of Cr-CoP/Fe2P is superior to that of noble metal catalyst electrode pair. Electronic structure analysis and various characterizations confirm that Cr doping and the formation of CoP/Fe2P heterogeneous interfaces redistribute the electron densities of the active sites, enlarge the specific surface area, and enhance the aerophobicity of the catalysts, thereby improving the electrocatalytic property. This work provides a referable method for engineering highly efficient and stable non-noble polymetallic phosphides, which serve as bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting.

Preparation of a cationic hydrogel microsphere adsorbent for efficient removal of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution

Yuansong Ye,Yuchi Zhang,Huazhong Wu,Run Fang

Herein, a cationic hydrogel microsphere (CHMS) was prepared by inverse suspension polymerization and freeze-drying and was applied to the adsorptive removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from aqueous solution. Morphological characterization shows that there are lots of folds and pores on the surface of CHMS with a unique petal-like appearance. According to the chemical structure analysis, CHMS contains plenty of functional groups such as amine and hydroxyl groups. These features give CHMS a larger specific surface area, faster adsorption rate, and higher adsorption capacity than the conventional cationic hydrogel microparticle (CHMP) adsorbent. The adsorption of Cr(VI) in water by CHMS is mainly based on the combination of electrostatic adsorption and redox reaction, with the electrostatic interaction between the protonated amine and Cr(VI) serving as the predominant adsorption mechanism. Experimental results reveal that CHMS can efficiently remove Cr(VI) from simulated wastewater in both batch and continuous adsorption modes, which is primarily due to its distinctive surface morphology and rich functional groups. Furthermore, the common coexisting metal ions in Cr(VI)-containing wastewater have no substantial negative influence on the adsorption. Therefore, it can be concluded that CHMS has a promising application prospect in the treatment of Cr(VI)-containing wastewater.
