The practical application of Li-rich Mn-based oxide cathode is predominately retarded by the capacity decline and voltage fading, associated with the structure distortion and anionic redox reactions. Here, a linkage-functionalized modification approach to tackle these challenges via a synchronous lithium oxidation strategy is reported. The doping of Ce in the bulk phase activates the pseudo-bonding effect, effectively stabilizing the lattice oxygen evolution and suppressing the structure distortion. Interestingly, it also induces the formation of spinel phase Li 4 Mn 5 O 12 in the subsurface, which in turn constructs the phase boundaries, thereby arousing the interior self-built-in electric field to prevent the outward migration of bulk oxygen anions and boost the charge transfer. Moreover, the formed coating layer Li 2 CeO 3 with oxygen vacancies accelerates Li + diffusion and mitigates electrolyte cauterization. The corresponding cathode exhibits superior long-cycle stability after 300 cycles with only a 0.013% capacity drop and 1.76 mV voltage decay per cycle. This work sheds new light on the development of Li-rich Mn-based oxide cathodes toward high energy density applications.

The development of efficient catalysts for the stepwise oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformyl furan (DFF), 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA), 5-Formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA) or 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is critical for biomass valorization. Herein, we reported a bimetallic Co-Mn catalyst anchored on nitrogen-doped porous carbon, which was used for the oxidation of HMF to FDCA, avoiding the use of high temperature and high-pressure oxygen. High FDCA selectivity (>95 %) was achieved through reaction condition optimization. And HMF→DFF→FFCA→FDCA was considered to be the main reaction pathway during the whole oxidation process. Additionally, the chemical environment of the constituent elements of the used catalyst was analyzed by XPS. TEM revealed that the catalyst retained its porous structure and excellent metal dispersion after the reaction. This structural stability was corroborated by sustained >90 % FDCA selectivity over five consecutive reaction cycles. This work established a dual-metal synergy strategy for multi-step oxidation pathways, offering insights into the design of robust catalysts for biomass-derived platform molecule upgrading.

A label free phosphorescence sensing platform for trypsin was developed employing Mn doped ZnS quantum dots (Mn-ZnS QDs) as the phosphorescence probe. Mn-ZnS QDs can emit strong room temperature phosphorescence. Upon addition of Cytochrome c (Cyt c), a hybrid complex between Mn-ZnS QDs and Cyt c was formed, and consequently, quenched the phosphorescence of Mn-ZnS QDs. In the presence of trypsin, Cyt c was hydrolyzed into small fragments, and accordingly, the quenched phosphorescence of Mn-ZnS QDs went back and high phosphorescence intensity was observed. As such, based on the phosphorescence signal changes of the system, a label free turn-on phosphorescence sensing platform was fabricated. Factors affecting the determination of trypsin including the concentration of Mn-ZnS QDs, reaction time, temperature and pH effect were comprehensively explored. Under the optimal experimental conditions the restored phosphorescence of the sensing system displayed a response for trypsin in the range of 0.88–15.6 μg mL−1 with a detection limit of 42 ng mL−1. Additionally, the sensing platform was successfully applied for the determination of trypsin in human serum samples with satisfactory recovery.

As an emerging technology, nanocatalytic medicine attracts much attention, especially the ones according to the enzymatic reaction by using excess H 2 O 2 in the tumor. Among various candidates, single-atom catalyst (SAC) revealed unique and outstanding redox reaction performance, since the active sites consisting of single metal atoms may achieve the maximum utilization of metal atoms and emerge obviously amplified reaction rate. Here we developed an M−N x (M = Mn, Zn) center-based SAC with a hollow structure by calcination of Mn 2+ -doped zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8), and PEGylation was applied to improve the hydrophilicity. According to the enzymatic reaction, the M−N x (M = Mn, Zn) centers have an inherent peroxidase-like activity to catalyze over-expressed H 2 O 2 in the weak acidic tumor microenvironment and generate a large amount of toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) like hydroxyl radicals for therapy. To keep efficient therapeutic output, we integrated the hollow SAC with Au which could expend the glucose in tumor and supply H 2 O 2 as the substrate of peroxidase-like activity. Better yet, Au may boost the photothermal effect of SAC and offer another non-invasive photothermal therapy (PTT) to promote the effect of tumor removal. This platform provided a new idea for the construction of more efficient peroxidase-like activity in tumor therapy.

Cu-Mn electronic coupling stabilizes spinel manganese ion sieves. • Cu doping reduces first-cycle Mn dissolution from 3.33% to 0.21%. • Cu-HMO retains 96.8% of lithium uptake after ten regeneration cycles. • Cu substitution raises Mn-vacancy formation energy by 0.403 eV. • Cu doping strengthens lithium binding from −3.515 to −4.556 eV. Manganese-based lithium ion sieves suffer from Mn dissolution and structural degradation during acid regeneration. Herein, Cu-doped HMO (Cu-HMO) was developed to simultaneously enhance Li + adsorption and structural stability. Cu incorporation preserved the spinel Mn O framework while increasing the specific surface area and regulating the Mn valence distribution. XPS revealed decreased Mn 3+ and increased Mn 4+ fractions accompanied by low-valence Cu species, indicating Cu Mn electronic coupling that suppresses Jahn-Teller distortion and Mn 3+ disproportionation. Cu-HMO exhibited a maximum Li + adsorption capacity of 49.15 mg/g at 298 K and maintained superior performance in the presence of various competing ions. During ten adsorption-desorption cycles, Cu-HMO exhibited improved capacity retention and markedly reduced Mn dissolution, with the first-cycle Mn dissolution rate decreasing from 3.33% for HMO to only 0.21% for Cu-HMO, corresponding to a reduction of approximately 94%. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that Cu substitution increased the Mn-vacancy formation energy by 0.403 eV and strengthened Li adsorption from −3.515 to −4.556 eV. These results demonstrate that Cu-induced electronic regulation provides an effective strategy for constructing stable and selective manganese ion sieves. In this study, caffeic acid (CA) was degraded by electrical discharge plasma combined with Mn doped CoOOH catalyst. Doping of Mn significantly improve the catalytic activity of CoOOH. CA degradation efficiency was 75.6% with dielectric barrier discharge treatment for 10 min, and it reached 97% using CoOOH as the catalyst at the same treatment time. CA was 100% degraded with only 8 min using Mn/CoOOH as the catalyst. The introduction of Mn into the lattice of CoOOH induced the formation of oxygen vacancy , causing part of coordinate number of Co decreased from 6 to 5, and thus produces unsaturated Co to be the Lewis acid sites. Lewis acid sites (unsaturated Co) could coordinate with O 3 and H 2 O 2 and break their chemical bonds to form O and –OH. Assisting in the conversion of O 3 to ·OH was the main role of H 2 O 2 in the catalytic process. The degradation products and pathway of CA were studied by three-dimensional fluorescence, liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer and density functional theory calculations.

Microspinel LiMn2O4 (LMO) is a widely used cathode material in power lithium-ion batteries. However, inevitable Mn dissolution and dynamic phase instability will cause the degradation of microspinel LMO during cycling. Here, a low-tortuosity LMO (LMO-LT) electrode is fabricated by an ice-templating method, which exhibits enhanced dynamic phase stability, alleviated Mn dissolution, and rare particle microcracks during cycling. It is shown that the low-tortuosity electrode enables fast lithium-ion diffusion and thus small concentration polarization, leading to uniform electrochemical reaction within microregions of the LMO-LT electrode. Furthermore, the fast lithium-ion transport kinetics and even mesoscopic scale reactions of the LMO-LT electrode effectively alleviate irreversible phase transition and Mn dissolution as well as suppress crack generation in LMO particles. As a result, the full cell [negative-to-positive capacity ratio (N/P) = 1.1] with thick LMO-LT cathode (13 mg cm−2) and Li4Ti5O12 anode sustains 80.0% capacity over 200 cycles. The LMO-LT electrode further delivers 78.9% capacity of that at 0.1 C at the high rate of 5 C. This work provides an important strategy to enhance dynamic phase stability and suppress Mn dissolution at the mesoscopic scale, promoting the development of high-performance LMO electrodes.

Li-rich Mn-based layered oxides are proposed to be candidates for high-energy Li-ion batteries. However, their large-scale production is still hampered by poor rate capability and severe voltage decay. It was mainly attributed to the irreversible oxygen loss, which induces transition metal ion migration, electrolyte consumption, and structural evolution. Herein, we propose an effective strategy of phosphorylation, in which the phosphate ion is induced to remove the surface labile oxygen. It urges the Li2MnO3 component to transform to the spinel-like structure and promotes the anionic redox process, thus facilitating lithium-ion diffusion and improving structural stability. As a result, the Li2MnO3 component is more prone to be activated, with the capacity increased by 18% in comparison with the pristine one. It also exhibits a superior capacity retention of 86.1% after 150 extended cycles and better rate performance delivering a capacity of 148.1 mA h g–1 even at 10 C. The effective phosphorylation opens a new way to tune anion redox chemistry and obtain structurally stable materials.

Dielectric thin film capacitors are expected to be a promising candidate for high-performance energy storage devices due to their high power density, fast charge/discharge speed, and excellent stability. Nevertheless, it remains a challenging endeavor to develop dielectrics with excellent energy storage density comparable to that of commercial batteries. In this work, lead-free 0.8SrTiO 3 -0.2BiFeO 3 (0.8STO-0.2BFO) thin films with coexisting amorphous and nanocrystalline structure were prepared by a sol-gel method. The heat-treatment temperature was adjusted to form polar-nano regions, thereby modulate the breakdown strength and dielectric polarization, and increase the energy storage density. The electric potential, electric field, and current density of the films with different amorphous/crystalline volume fractions were evaluated by the finite element simulation to further verify that the proper crystallization can result in the improved polarization performance and increased breakdown strength of the films, which are beneficial to the enhancement of energy storage performance. Through structural tailoring, the 0.8STO-0.2BFO film annealed at 550 °C demonstrates the optimal energy storage properties with a giant discharge energy storage density of 65 J/cm 3 and high efficiency of 75% at room temperature. Simultaneously, a broad temperature stability (20–160 °C), superb operating frequency stability (20 Hz-2 kHz), and excellent fatigue endurance (6.3 ×10 5 ) are observed without appreciable degradation of the energy storage performance. The excellent energy storage performance indicates a widespread potential of 0.8STO-0.2BFO films in pulse power applications, such as consumer electronics, microelectronics, and medical devices .

The charge transport between layers of layered double hydroxide (LDH) with structural stability is generally considered as a key factor in restricting electrochemical performances. Herein, we report the surface spatial confinement effect on Mn–Co LDH@carbon dots (CDs) to enhance charge transfer and the stable structure for high-performance supercapacitors. The surface confined effect should be characterized as the charge transfer and interaction between Mn–Co LDH and CDs using density functional theory calculations. CDs can improve the density of states near the Fermi level to achieve an enhanced conductivity. The geometric structure can remain stable at room temperature within 200 fs by using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The two-electrode device gained the energy density of 79 W h kg–1 and a power density of 666 W kg–1 at 1 A g–1. This design concept will help to design, prepare, and assemble the high-efficiency and long-lifetime electrochemical energy storage devices based on various layered materials.

The cobalt carbide (Co2C) innovatively prepared from Co–Mn layered double hydroxide (CoMn LDH) has been investigated and evaluated toward its alternative synthesis conditions and different catalytic performances. Along with various characterization techniques, the preparation basically contains four steps (synthesis of CoMn LDH, calcination, reduction, and crystallization) that transform CoMn LDH to CoMn spinel and then to Co2C. Catalyst evaluation toward toluene pyrolysis was conducted. The sample with Co2C exhibited almost 100% conversion rate of toluene, where the resulting hydrogen yield (∼1.8%) is 6 times more than that of the blank test by using silica sand (∼0.3%), realizing the full transfer of hydrogen element from toluene to hydrogen molecule. Furthermore, based on the textural analysis and density functional dispersion correction calculation, which theoretically explained the easy accessibility of toluene to the crystal surface of Co2C(001) with a relatively high adsorption energy (about −280 kJ mol–1), it suggested that Co2C may expand more extensive applications in the field of catalysis.
