Simultaneous generation of H 2 fuel and value-added chemicals has attracted increasing attention since the photogenerated electrons and holes can be both employed to convert solar light into chemical energy. Herein, for realizing UV-visible-NIR light driven dehydrogenation of benzyl alcohol (BA) into benzaldehydes (BAD) and H 2 , a novel localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) enhanced S-scheme heterojunction was designed by combining noble-metal-free plasmon MoO 3– x as oxidation semiconductor and Zn 0.1 Cd 0.9 S as reduction semiconductor. The photoredox system of Zn 0.1 Cd 0.9 S/MoO 3– x displayed an unconventional reaction model, in which the BA served as both electron donor and acceptor. The S-scheme charge transfer mechanism induced by the formed internal electric field enhanced the redox ability of charge carriers thermodynamically and boosted charge separation kinetically. Moreover, due to the LSPR effect of MoO 3− x nanosheets , Zn 0.1 Cd 0.9 S/MoO 3− x photocatalysts exhibited strong absorption in the region of full solar spectrum. Therefore, the Zn 0.1 Cd 0.9 S/MoO 3− x composite generated H 2 and BAD simultaneously via selective oxidation of BA with high production (34.38 and 33.83 mmol·g −1 for H 2 and BAD, respectively) upon full solar illumination. Even under NIR light irradiation, the H 2 production rate could up to 94.5 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 . In addition, the Zn 0.1 Cd 0.9 S/MoO 3– x composite displayed effective photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate up to 149.2 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 from water, which was approximate 6 times that of pure Zn 0.1 Cd 0.9 S. This work provides a reference for rational design of plasmonic S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for coproduction of high-value chemicals and solar fuel production.

Herein, two novel electrocatalysts are simultaneously grown on Ni foam (NF) through a one-step hydrothermal method . The as-prepared Ru–MoO 3- x NF exhibits good performance for HER with low overpotentials of 12 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and 49 mV at 100 mA cm −2 , a low Tafel slope of 32.96 mV dec −1 , as well as an excellent durability at least lasting 17 h in alkaline media . The Fe 3 O 4 –NiFe LDH NF (layered double hydroxide nickel foam) ultrathin nanosheets electrode shows a low OER overpotential of 216 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 42.42 mV dec −1 . Moreover, a two-electrode water splitting device is fabricated with Ru–MoO 3- x NF as cathode and Fe 3 O 4 –NiFe LDH NF as anode, it only requires 1.46 V at 10 mA cm −2 and exhibits a long term durability without obvious loss of activity after continuously operating for 180 h. The superior catalytic behavior should be originated from the open heterostructure and oxygen vacancies with high intrinsic activity, abundant exposed active sites, and fast charge transfer. This work provides a new strategy to design heterostructure and transition metal oxides catalysts with improved catalytic activity and durability by a facile route for overall water splitting or other applications.

The transfer rate of photo-generated electrons is a critical factor that determines the photocatalytic efficiency of Z-scheme photocatalytic systems. Here, a novel Z-scheme g-C 3 N 4 -AQ-MoO 3 photocatalyst with anthraquinone (AQ) serving as an e – transfer channel for hydrogen production was proposed. Its enhanced photocatalytic activity is due to the accelerated transfer of e – in the form of charge inside AQ, which also suppresses the recombination of photo-generated e – and h + . In addition, the reduction area is significantly increased by the exfoliation of g-C 3 N 4 into thin layers. Due to the synergistic effect of rapid e – transfer and large reduction area, Z-scheme g-C 3 N 4 -AQ-MoO 3 has a high hydrogen production efficiency that can reach 2018 μmol/g with the presence of triethanolamine as a hole sacrificial agent after 180 min of simulated sunlight illumination. This work provides a new strategy to design and develop Z-scheme photocatalytic systems with excellent electron migration rates and high charge separation efficiency.

The first polar alkaline-earth metal molybdenum iodate, Ba2[MoO3(OH)(IO3)2]IO3, with a Λ-shaped [MoO3(OH)(IO3)2]3– functional motif, was rationally designed. A zero-dimensional (0D) [MoO3(OH)(IO3)2]3– unit is derived from 0D [MoO2(OH)(IO3)3]2– polyanion through anionic mono-site substitution. Ba2[MoO3(OH)(IO3)2]IO3 possesses a strong phase-matchable second-harmonic-generation (SHG) response of approximately 8 times that of benchmark KH2PO4 (KDP), a broad transparent spectral region from near-ultraviolet to mid-infrared (0.29–10.6 μm), a large band gap of 3.78 eV, and a high laser-induced damage threshold (LDT) of 92.3 MW cm–2. The results suggest that Ba2[MoO3(OH)(IO3)2]IO3 can be potentially applied in the mid-infrared nonlinear optical field. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the large SHG response of the title compound originates mainly from the Λ-shaped [MoO3(OH)(IO3)2]3– functional unit. From multisite substitution to mono-site substitution, this work provides a more generic route to synthesize SHG materials.

Ru-based clusters represent a class of promising electrocatalysts for pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), yet their practical application is hindered by nanoparticle aggregation and strong oxygen affinity, leading to compromising activity and stability. This study proposes a strategy by integrating strong metal–support interactions with a built-in electric field (BIEF), in which the electrostatic interaction facilitates the design of a class of heterostructure catalysts comprising RuO2–x clusters and MoO3 on Ni(OH)2 (RuO2–x/MoO3–Ni(OH)2). Detailed characterizations reveal that the engineered BIEF induces charge redistribution, leading to the enhanced electron density at Ru active sites. This electronic modulation effectively weakens the adsorption of the OH group while substantially boosting catalytic activity and stability. The synthesized RuO2–x/MoO3–Ni(OH)2 achieves low overpotentials of 64, 150, and 83 mV at 100 mA cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH, 1.0 M phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), and 0.5 M H2SO4, respectively. Furthermore, it exhibits robust stability for 150 h at 100 mA cm–2 in an alkaline solution. In an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer, the catalyst requires only 1.76 V to attain 0.5 A cm–2. This work establishes a pioneering pathway for designing efficient electrocatalysts toward the production of clean energy carriers.

An integrated and environmentally friendly process combining solvent-impregnated biochar enrichment and chlorination distillation was developed to address challenges in recovering molybdenum from low-concentration acidic leachates and the use of chlorine gas in conventional chlorination methods. Initially, molybdenum was adsorbed from the leachate using solvent-impregnated biochar (SICB), achieving an adsorption efficiency of 98.91% and a saturated adsorption capacity of 53.850 mg/g under optimized conditions. The adsorbed molybdenum was desorbed with an ammonium bicarbonate solution of appropriate concentration. After evaporative concentration of the desorbed solution, the resulting solid was subjected to chlorination in an optimized molten salt system under optimal reaction conditions, producing MoO 2 Cl 2 with a purity exceeding 99.9%. This step effectively removed impurities such as sodium, potassium, and iron, while the low reaction temperature and avoidance of chlorine gas reduced energy consumption. Finally, using the aqueous solution of the high-purity MoO 2 Cl 2 as feedstock and melamine as the precipitating agent, MoO 3 with a purity of over 99.9% was successfully prepared. This integrated process enables efficient separation of molybdenum from impurities, eliminates the use of chlorine gas, and offers promising prospects for the comprehensive recovery of valuable metals from vanadium shale.

In this study, a series of V 2 O 5 -MoO 3 /TiO 2 (VMo/Ti) catalysts were prepared using TiO 2 supports with varying specific surface area for selective catalytic reduction of NO x by ammonia (NH 3 -SCR). The activity tests revealed that the NO conversion of different samples showed a volcano-type variation with surface area rising, where the VMo/Ti-S3 catalyst with moderate surface area possessed the best SCR activity (>80% NO conversion at 250 °C). Meanwhile, the SO 2 oxidation ratio decreased at an elevated surface area. At 350 °C, the SO 2 oxidation ratio of VMo/Ti-S1 catalyst with lowest surface area was about 4.4%, which was around 4 times that of VMo/Ti-S4 sample with highest surface area. Characterization results indicated that, as the surface area increased, both the redox capacity and surface acidity were enhanced. And the vanadium oxides became less polymeric with a gradual increased ratio in dimeric vanadium species and finally more monomer VO x formation, corresponding to the highest SCR activity of VMo/Ti-S3 catalyst. Additionally, the characterization results indicated that the chemisorption of SO 2 was inhibited on high-surface-area catalysts, which was consistent with DFT results. And DFT simulations also confirmed an increased energy barrier for SO 2 oxidation to generate SO 3 process on less polymeric vanadium species. Both the results above indicated the critical role of vanadium polymerization state in SCR activity and SO 2 oxidation. This work offers new insights into the development of efficient SCR catalysts with low SO 2 oxidation rates for industrial applications.

As a crucial part of artificial photosynthesis, the design of the catalyst is important essential. Among them, the interface engineering between semiconductors and the construction of surface-active sites play a vital role in generating and transporting light-excited electrons, which can ultimately accelerate water decomposition. Therefore, the MoS 2 @MoO 3 step (S)-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared by in-situ partial sulfidation. The excellent interface engineering of MoS 2 @MoO 3 nanomaterials achieves a high surface reaction rate. The in-situ vulcanization strategy gradually corrodes from the outside to the inside. The introduction of sulfur atoms can replace oxygen atoms to build a sulfur-rich surface and generate molybdenum sulfide. The amount of thioacetamide is adjusted to control vulcanization and optimizing the experimental conditions, the best hydrogen production rate is 12416.8 µmol h −1 g −1 . An in-situ irradiation XPS experiments and DFT calculations provide a deeper understanding of the S-scheme electron transport mechanism in MoS 2 @MoO 3 . MoS 2 @MoO 3 interface interaction has penetrating electron channels and a strong interface interaction force, which effectively promotes the charge transfer between interfaces. This gradual surface vulcanization strategy provides new ideas for introducing synergistic surface-active sites and optimizing interface engineering photocatalyst projects.

Recently, constructing heterostructures at the working electrode has emerged as a promising technique in energy storage. This approach utilizes the interfacial energy level difference between two semiconductors to enhance charge transfer and improve Li + diffusion kinetics. In this work, we employed an in-situ hydrothermal method to successfully fabricate TiO 2 /MoO 3 heterostructured electrodes. The resulting interface driving force of approximately 0.54 V exhibited a significant enhancement in charge transfer and demonstrated superior Li + storage performance compared to individual MoO 3 electrodes. Additionally, the incorporation of TiO 2 effectively reduced volume expansion, enhancing the stability of the electrode material. As expected, the heterostructure electrode TiO 2 /MoO 3 (x = 10) exhibits the highest specific capacitance of 606.36 F·g −1 . Our further fabricated asymmetric supercapacitor TiO 2 /MoO 3 (x = 10)//PPy device presents an energy density of 42.28 Wh·kg −1 , which is 1.57-fold higher than that of the MoO 3 //PPy device. This study introduces a methodology that enhances the efficiency and accessibility in the process of creating electrode materials, thereby offering a more streamlined and user-friendly avenue for the advancement of supercapacitor.

Molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) is an attractive semiconductor. Thus, bandgap engineering toward photoelectronic applications is appealing yet not well studied. Here, we report the incorporation of sulfur atoms into MoO3, using sulfur powder as a source of sulfur, via a self-developed hydrothermal synthesis approach. The formation of Mo-S bonds in the MoO3material with the synergistic effect of sulfur doping and oxygen vacancies (designated as S-MoO3−x) is confirmed using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The bandgap is tuned from 2.68 eV to 2.57 eV upon sulfur doping, as confirmed by UV-VIS DRS spectra. Some MoS2phase is identified with sulfur doping by referring to the photoluminescence (PL) spectra and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), allowing significantly improved charge carrier separation and electron transfer efficiency. Therefore, the as-prepared S-MoO3−xdelivers a sensitive photocurrent response and splendid cycling stability. This study on the synergistic effect of sulfur doping and oxygen vacancies provides key insights into the impact of doping strategies on MoO3performance, paving new pathways for its optimization and development in relevant fields.

The traditional strategy of using polymer solid electrolyte composite fillers is extremely limited by the continuity of the organic-inorganic interface. Herein, a new composite electrolyte is fabricated, wherein alternating layers of organic polyethylene oxide (PEO) and inorganic molybdenum trioxide (MoO 3 ) nanobelts are prepared and then the multilayer film is rolled and sliced into disks. Compared with a similar electrolyte prepared by disordered blending, the electrolyte here has a mesoscopic continuous organic-inorganic interface perpendicular to the electrode direction. The ionic conductivity increases from 4.88 × 10 −4 to 1.16 × 10 −3 S cm −1 . The “interfacial battery” can operate stably over >2000 charge–discharge cycles at 2 C (60 °C), and can withstand rapid charging–discharging, even at 10 C. Theoretical calculation results show that this unique assembly method essentially eliminates the energy band gap between the PEO and MoO 3 interface, and promotes lithium ion (Li + ) transport. In addition, the electronic interaction between the orbital of Mo and PEO extends the lattice structure of PEO, resulting in a reduction in the crystallinity, which further improves the battery performance. This study provides a composite electrolyte design that is different from blending and represents a new strategy for the development of low-cost superionic conductors.

Existing methods for producing pure MoO 3 from low-grade molybdenite concentrates suffers from complex unit operations, suboptimal metal recovery, excessive reagent/energy consumption, and substantial wastewater generation. This work presents a novel metaphosphate-quartz-assisted volatilization roasting process for the direct preparation of pure MoO 3 from pelletized low-grade molybdenite concentrates. Single-factor experiments demonstrated that the addition of Al(PO 3 ) 3 and quartz significantly increased molybdenum recovery (by over 25 %) while maintaining pellet structural integrity during roasting. The optimal result—97.1 % molybdenum volatilization efficiency—was achieved under the following conditions: a mass ratio of ore: Al(PO 3 ) 3 : quartz = 1: 0.2: 0.2, and temperature-programmed oxidative roasting from 900 °C to 1050 °C for 65 min. Additionally, the crystallized MoO 3 volatile exhibited a high purity of 99.9 % and was further upgraded to 99.99 % purity through a simple water washing. The intensification of molybdenum separation was attributed to two primary mechanisms: (i) Al(PO 3 ) 3 triggered decomposition reactions of molybdates, releasing volatile MoO 3 ; (ii) quartz expansion and interconnected pyrophosphate/phosphate networks maintained a mechanically robust yet porous structure that enabled efficient MoO 3 transfer while reducing vapor contamination caused by dust. In general, the new approach can overcome the negative effects derived from impurities, and offers significant advantages, including much fewer procedures, lower reagent consumption, zero wastewater discharge, and high molybdenum recovery.
