Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries due to their low cost and abundant sodium resources; however, conventional liquid electrolytes suffer from safety issues and interfacial instability. Herein, a gel polymer electrolyte (TPU–TiO₂ GPE) was developed by incorporating 5 wt% TiO₂ nanoparticles into a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) matrix. The Lewis acidic centers of TiO₂ interact synergistically with polyurethane chain segments, reducing polymer crystallinity and enhancing chain mobility. As a result, the TPU–TiO₂ GPE exhibits higher room-temperature ionic conductivity (2.91 × 10 −4 S·cm −1 ) and tensile strength (32.7 MPa) than pristine TPU. Moreover, the TPU–TiO₂ GPE forms a stable and uniform solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) on sodium metal, effectively suppressing dendrite growth. Na||Na symmetric cells demonstrate stable cycling for over 250 h at 0.2 mA·cm −2 , while Na||Na₃V₂(PO₄)₃ full cells retain 93.84% of their capacity after 280 cycles at 0.5C. The state of charge (SOC) of the full cells was estimated using a second-order RC equivalent circuit model combined with an extended Kalman filter (EKF). Compared with the pristine TPU system, the TPU–TiO₂ GPE exhibits smoother OCV–SOC characteristics and reduced polarization, leading to significantly improved SOC estimation accuracy. The voltage-model fitting RMSE is reduced from approximately 2.4 mV to 1.3 mV. This improvement enables more reliable SOC tracking across the entire SOC range. These results indicate that the TPU–TiO₂ GPE enhances both electrochemical performance and SOC predictability, providing a viable strategy for safe and intelligently managed sodium-ion batteries.

The development of new energy-related materials is the pinnacle to attaining a sustainable society based on renewable energy. Over the past decades, plenty of electrode materials have been investigated seeking better energy storage properties. However, the often-tedious synthetic procedures and large amounts of solvents utilised during their syntheses incur high costs and severe environmental pollution. Here we present a solvent-free approach to metal–organic-frameworks/MXene-derived carbonaceous metal selenide/MXene composites with unique nanostructures rich in mesopores and macropores. These species can be readily transformed into high-performance electrode materials with enhanced Li/Na ion storage properties compared with their solution-based counterparts. Herein we report not only a unique metal–organic framework/MXene-derived electrode material displaying high-performance for advanced lithium/sodium storage applications but also its novel environmentally benign production process.

The piezoelectric enhancement of photo-catalytic activity for water splitting and pollutant degradation is a novel approach to developing renewable energy and environmental protection applications. Herein, a new form of defect engineered Na-Sm bimetallic-regulated CaBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 platelet is synthesized via a molten salt process for water splitting and pollutant degradation applications. An intermediate band structure is introduced by Sm-doping, and empty orbitals in the conductive band are introduced by Na-doping. These factors, combined with the increased local charge density around the Sm and Na atoms, result in an increased electrical conductivity, improved electron mobility, and provide additional electrons for enhancing catalytic reactions. As a consequence, the judicious co-doping of CaBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 with Sm and Na leads to a unique synergetic piezo-photo-electric effect to provide a superior piezo-photo-catalytic performance for H 2 production (158.53 µmol g −1 h −1 ) and pollutant degradation (rate constant, k = 0.257 min −1 ). This new approach provides important insights into the application of defect engineering to exploit the cooperative doping of alkaline earth metals and rare metals to create high-performance catalysts.

Aiming to achieve a metallic bismuth (Bi) anode with constant accommodation of volume change, a dynamic template strategy is proposed for fabrication of a highly adjustable Bi aerogel anode. In the presence of the NaBH4 reductant, the in situ generated hydrogen bubbles served as dynamic templates to direct the reduction, nucleation and growth of Bi nanoparticles, which are subsequently merged into a three-dimensional porous skeleton. The unique 3D porous Bi skeleton ensures the rapid alloying/dealloying of sodium ions and efficient electrolyte infiltration. Its excellent structural integrity and buffering capacity for volume fluctuation lead to superior rate performance (330.6 mA h g−1 at 30C) and long-term stability (339.1 mA h g−1 after 2000 cycles at 10C) in a half cell. When coupled with a Na3V2(PO4)3 cathode, the Na3V2(PO4)3//Bi full cell exhibits appealing energy density and power density. This work demonstrates a new idea for constructing highly reliable alloy-type anodes for high-rate energy storage systems.

Owing to the desirable nano-morphology, controllable structure, and ease of preparation, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely used as the precursors for electrodes in Na-ion battery (NIB). However, MOF structures are prone to fracture and collapse during the reactions. Additionally, MOF-derived electrodes often exhibit a high expansion rate, which negatively impacts the long cyclic capability of NIBs. Herein, we employed a stable covalent-organic framework (COF) as a protective coating for the first time to preserve the MOF structure. A shuttle-like iron selenide (Fe 3 Se 4 ) coated with N-doped carbon (NC) was synthesized using a simple hydrothermal method, surface coating, and subsequent selenizing process. Due to its large specific surface area and well-developed porosity, the double-framework derived Fe 3 Se 4 /NC electrode provides abundant active sites for Na + storage. The COF and COF-derived NC protect the structure of Fe 3 Se 4 /NC during synthesis and cyclic process, respectively. The high conductivity of the NC coating enhances the electron/ion conductivity of Fe 3 Se 4 /NC, thereby beneficial the rate performance. As the material anode for NIB, the Fe 3 Se 4 /NC electrode exhibits a high initial charging/discharging capacity (425.7/478.4 mAh·g −1 with an initial Coulombic efficiency of 89.0 %), excellent rate performance (333.5 mAh·g −1 at 12 A·g −1 ), long-durable cycle capability (290.8 mAh·g −1 after 1000 cycles at 8 A·g −1 ) and fast charging ability (143 s). This work provides a novel strategy of “COF on MOF” to prepare high-performance electrode materials for NIB.

Alloy-type materials have aroused wide concern as potential anodes for Na-ion batteries (NIBs) because of their high theoretical capacities and suitable Na-storage potentials. Fabricating composites with carbon matrixes is the most common strategy to solve their key issues of large volume expansion and sluggish reaction kinetics. However, it is still challenging to achieve strong interfacial interaction between alloy-type materials and carbon matrixes, thus largely improving the buffering effect of carbon matrixes on volume change. Herein, we have developed a SnSb-graphene (SnSb-G) hybrid anode with interfacial Sn/Sb–C bonding via a plasma-assisted mechanochemical method. The Sn/Sb–C bonding can enhance the interfacial interaction between SnSb and graphene, which inhibits the detachment of SnSb nanoparticles from graphene upon cycling and promotes the buffering effect of graphene. Meanwhile, the strong interfacial bonding of conductive graphene network to SnSb nanoparticles can greatly facilitate the Na+ storage/transfer along the SnSb/graphene interface, rendering electrode superior performance at high rates. Therefore, as an anode for NIBs, the SnSb-G composite exhibits superb rate capability (301.5 mAh g–1 at 10.0 A g–1) and cyclic stability (85.8%/89.1% capacity retentions at 1.0/2.0 A g–1 after 1000 cycles). Moreover, the assembled full cell delivers a high energy density of 145 Wh kg–1 and superior cycling performance of 333.6 mAh g–1 after 200 cycles, demonstrating its potential for practical application. This work provides new insight to achieve high-performance alloy-type anodes for practical NIBs.

Cation disorder in hydroxide-based perovskites remains relatively under-researched. In this work, novel hydroxide-based perovskite Sn1/3Na2/3Sn(OH)6 was first fabricated by a direct hydrothermal method, and its ability to photodegrade 2,4-dichlorophenol was evaluated. The synthesized photocatalyst is isostructural with MSn(OH)6 (M = Mg, Ca, Sr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, or Zn), where the M site is occupied by disordered Sn4+/Na+. Sn1/3Na2/3Sn(OH)6 exhibits outstanding photocatalytic activity under ultraviolet light. Specifically, 99% of 2,4-DCP is photodegraded in 40 min, with approximately 94% of its total chlorine content converted to Cl– anions. Radical trapping experiments indicated that superoxide radical anions (·O2–) play a critical role during the photocatalytic process. Finally, liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry was conducted to monitor the photocatalytic intermediates. Overall, our findings demonstrate that hydroxide-based perovskites with cation disorder show promise for application in photocatalysis.

In this work, the adduct of maleic anhydride and methyl eleostearate (MAME) and dimer fatty acid (DFA) were converted to the sodium and zinc salts (L-Zn-MAME, L-Na-MAME, L-Zn-DFA, and L-Na-DFA), respectively, which were subsequently turned into Na/Zn composite liquid stabilizers(LTS-Na/Zn-MAME and LTS-Na/Zn-DFA) by formula combination. Na salts, Zn salts and mixed Na/Zn salts from these fatty acid salts were used as thermal stabilizers for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). The chemical structures of MAME , DFA, and their liquid zinc and sodium salts were verified using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. Thermal stability and mechanical properties of the sodium and zinc salts, and their Na/Zn composite liquid stabilizers derived from MAME and DFA for PVC were investigated using discoloration and dynamic mechanical analyses, TGA-FTIR-MS, thermal decomposition kinetics, and Congo red and tensile tests. Thermal stability of pure PVC is poor, but membrane thermal stability can be improved by integrating thermal stabilizers. Results show that L-Na-MAME has an outstanding synergistic effect with the commercial general calcium/zinc stearate composite heat stabilizer(CaSt 2 /ZnSt 2 ). CaSt 2 /ZnSt 2 /LTS-Na-MAME, LTS-Na/Zn-MAME and CaSt 2 /LTS-Zn-DFA/LTS-Na-DFA also have a better heat-stabilizing impact on PVC than CaSt 2 /ZnSt 2 , especially LTS-Na/Zn-MAME can more effectively enhance the primary coloring of PVC. In comparison to blank PVC and PVC/CaSt 2 /ZnSt 2 , both PVC/LTS-Na/Zn-MAME and PVC/LTS-Na/Zn-DFA display a larger elongation at break and acceptable tensile strength. The new stabilizers can largely enhance the heat stability of PVC resins, endowing PVC products with good plasticization performance, and can fully or partially replace the general calcium zinc stearate composite heat stabilizer and other heat stabilization products.

Functionalized monomers are of utmost importance in producing new polymers and smart materials. Herein, a two-step approach involving heterogeneous catalysis was developed to produce a functionalized monomer (2-vinylfuran) from bio-based furfural, giving an overall yield of 89%. Economic analysis suggests that this facile approach incurs much lower costs, and its practicality improves the availability of 2-vinylfuran. This is due to the delicate structure of the optimized 4Na5Ce/SiO2, where Na species are present at the oxygen vacancies of the ceria that protect the catalyst structure from collapse, and the catalyst consequently displays excellent performance. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the reaction occurs on the Na and Ce species. The adsorption of a furan group onto Na led to side reactions, which were suppressed in the presence of Ce, resulting in higher selectivity. Finally, a polymer based on 2-vinylfuran was prepared, which shows good surface properties and thermodynamic stability.

The recovery and utilization of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is the key to achieve the targets of peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality. The Na-CO 2 battery made with cheap alkali metal sodium and greenhouse gas CO 2 is an effective strategy to consume CO 2 and store clean renewable energy. However, the liquid electrolyte volatilization in the open battery system and inevitable dendrite growth restrict the application of Na-CO 2 batteries. In this work, magnesium-doped Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 (NZSP) was studied as a solid electrolyte for solid-state Na-CO 2 batteries. The ionic conductivity of Na 3.2 Zr 1.9 Mg 0.1 Si 2 PO 12 reaches 1.16 mS cm −1 at room temperature by replacing Zr ions in Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 with Mg ions, and the structural changes are analyzed by neutron powder diffraction. The composite electrolyte consisting of highly conductive Na 3.2 Zr 1.9 Mg 0.1 Si 2 PO 12 and high processability poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) is utilized for the first time to assemble a solid-state Na-CO 2 battery. The cell shows a full discharge capacity of 7720 mAh g −1 at 200 mA g −1 . The middle gap voltage is lower than 2 V after 120 cycles at 200 mA g −1 and at a cut-off capacity of 500 mAh g −1 . This work demonstrates a promising strategy to design high-performance solid-state Na-CO 2 batteries.

O3-NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 is a promising layered cathode material with high specific capacity, low cost, and simple synthesis. However, sluggish kinetic hindrance is attributed to the size discrepancy between the large Na-ion and narrow tetrahedral interstitial positions, leading to inferior rate capacity and low reversible capacity. Herein, F − with light‐weight and strong electronegativity is introduced to substitute O atoms in the bulk structure, which intensifies the bond strength of transition metal and oxygen and enlarges the Na + diffusion channel. In addition, density-functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the electrostatic interaction is weakened between Na + in the tetrahedral site and the transition-metal cation directly below it, dramatically reducing the migration barriers of Na + diffusion. Consequently, the as-obtained NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 1.95 F 0.05 sample displays outstanding rate performance of 86.7 mA h g −1 at 10 C and excellent capacity retention of 84.1% after 100 cycles at 2 C. Moreover, a full cell configuration using a hard carbon anode reaches the energy density of 307.7 Wh kg −1 . This strategy paves the way for novel means of modulating the Na-ion migration path for high-rate O3-type layered cathode materials.

Biomass-based graphitic carbon is a promising material, but the effect mechanism of inherent alkali metals on the catalytic pyrolysis of biomass is still unclear. In this study, cellulose was selected as the model substance, and the influence mechanism of Na on the graphitization of cellulose catalytic pyrolysis was investigated through a combination of experiments and theoretical calculations. The results indicate that Na can interact with the carbon skeleton through van der Waals forces, thereby altering the spatial structure of graphite crystals and increasing the interlayer spacing of graphite by 27.7%. In addition, Na can coexist with Fe(III) in the form of oxides, while also increasing the reaction energy barrier of reverse hydroxylation and dehydration cyclization, decreasing the generation of reducing gases mainly composed of CO. This impedes the reduction of iron-based catalysts, thereby affecting the formation of the graphite microcrystalline structure. The research indicates that maintaining the ratio of Na content to iron-based catalysts within a 1:1 range is optimal for producing graphite carbon from cellulose.
