Mesoporous tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) and nickel oxide (NiO) electrochromic (EC) thin films have been fabricated by sol-gel method with assistant of tri-block copolymer [PEO 132 PEO 50 PEO 132 ] (F108). By controlling weight ratio of F108 and calcination temperatures, uniform and transparent mesoporous films are fabricated. Both WO 3 and NiO films are comprised by nanoparticles with diameters of ca .10 nm, mesopores with pore size of approximately 6 nm are distributed in the films. The thickness of the films are ca . 400 nm. The as-prepared films have ultra-fast switching time during EC redox reactions . Applied with positive and negative voltages of 40 s respectively, the coloration/bleaching time of WO 3 and NiO films are 5.7 s/2.3 s and 0.9 s/3.8 s, which is faster than that of comparative EC films fabricated by sol-gel method without F108 (coloration/bleaching time of WO 3 and NiO films are 17.5 s/14.5 s and 13.6 s/4.9 s) and EC films fabricated by magnetron sputtering method (coloration/bleaching time of WO 3 and NiO films are 29.4 s/21.3 s and 9.6 s/7.5 s). Quasi-solid state electrochromic device assembled with mesoporous WO 3 and NiO thin films has excellent EC performance, such as fast switching speed (3.2/1.1 s for coloration/bleaching time), large optical modulation of about 45% (at 600 nm), high coloration efficiency (130.8 cm 2 /C at the wavelength of 600 nm) and good cycle stability. These excellent properties are derived from mesoporous channels in the films. For the mesoporous channels can shorten the diffusion paths and make it easier for ions to transport in films.

Electromagnetic absorption materials have gained increasing attention. In this study, we report NiO decorated biomass porous carbon derived from pine nut shells as a promising microwave absorbing material by a facile strategy. The NiO/biomass porous carbon (BPC) is thermally converted from Ni(OH)2/BPC with BPC as the base for precipitation. All products were characterized by XRD, Raman, and SEM techniques, which reveals that the NiO nanoflakes were uniformly self-assembled on the surface of the activated carbon. Compared with counterparts of pure Ni(OH)2 and Ni(OH)2/BPC, a large reflection loss peak of −33.8 dB at 16.4 GHz is achieved for the NiO/BPC composites, and the absorption bandwidth less than −10 dB can reach up to about 6.7 GHz (from 11.3 to 18.0 GHz) with a thickness of 8 mm. The enhanced microwave absorption properties originate from the electric/dielectric polarization and the unique NiO decorated BPC structures. The expanded interfaces, such as NiO–NiO, Ni–BPC and NiO–paraffin interfaces in the complicated porous composites, could boost the interfacial polarization as well as related relaxation which results in enhanced dielectric loss and electromagnetic absorbing properties. In addition, NiO/BPC nanocomposites exhibit comparatively better matching of permittivity and permeability. It is expected that our present investigation could provide a new possibility for biomass based fabrication of potential microwave absorbing materials.

Metal–organic framework (MOF)-based materials possess numerous attractive characteristics; however, the application of MOF-based photocatalysts in the area of visible-light photocatalytic H2 evolution is still in its infancy. Herein, we develop a series of novel UiO-66-NH2-based composites with embedded NiO nanoparticles via solvothermal treatment and subsequent calcination. Their characterizations demonstrate intimate lattice-level contacts between UiO-66-NH2 photocatalysts and NiO nanoparticles. By optimizing each component, even without noble metal loading, the U6N-NiO-2 sample (the weight ratio of NiO to U6N-NiO-2 is theoretically calculated to be ca. 10 wt%) with 15 mg eosin Y as a sensitizer causes an enhanced H2 generation rate of 2561.32 μmol h−1 g−1 under visible-light irradiation using TEOA as a sacrificial reagent; furthermore, its corresponding quantum efficiency is as high as 6.4% at 420 nm. The H2 evolution activity of U6N-NiO-2 is about 5 times higher than that of the UiO-66-NH2 photocatalyst (denoted as U6N) and 23 times higher than that of U6N-NiO-2 without sensitizer. It is demonstrated that the high efficiency originates from the visible-light generated electrons of eosin Y and UiO-66-NH2, the efficient separation of carriers by the cascaded band structure and more negative CB of NiO as well as the good dispersion of NiO nanoparticles on the octahedral skeleton. This study provides new insights for the design of MOF-based materials without noble metal loading for visible-light photocatalytic H2 evolution.

A facile and energy efficient microwave synthesis of NiO/MnO 2 composite is presented in this study. The NiO nanoparticles (∼30 nm) and composite of NiO nanoparticles with nano-particle MnO 2 were grown on the surface of graphite. The morphologies and electrochemical performance of NiO@graphite and NiO/MnO 2 @graphite composite were tested and compared. The SEM results showed that addition of MnO 2 prevented the agglomeration of NiO nanoparticles. The electrochemical results of NiO/MnO 2 @graphite has demonstrated better performance than NiO@graphite, with higher specific capacitance of 102.78 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 and superior cycling stability with specific capacitance retention of 140% over more than 1500 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performance of NiO/MnO 2 @graphite makes it suitable for electrode material of supercapacitors .

Non-enzymatic glucose detection is an effective strategy to control the blood glucose level of diabetic patients. A novel hierarchical core–shell structure of nickel hydroxide shell coated copper hydroxide core based on copper foam (Ni(OH)2@Cu(OH)2-CF) was fabricated and derived from NiO@Cu2O-CF for glucose sensing. Cyclic voltammetry and amperometry experiments have demonstrated the efficient electrochemical catalysis of glucose under alkaline conditions. The measurement displays that the fabricated sensor exhibits a detection scale of 0.005–4.5 mM with a detection sensitivity of 4.67 µA/µM/cm2. It has remarkable response/recovery times in respect of 750 μM glucose (1.0 s/3.5 s). Moreover, the NiO@Cu2O-CF shows significant selectivity, reliable reproducibility and long-term stability for glucose determination, suggesting it is a suitable candidate for further applications.

The combination of photocatalyst and biochar is an effective strategy to improve the overall photocatalytic activity, but it is still a challenge to find photocatalyst with excellent photocatalytic activity and biochar with large surface and rich oxygen functional groups. In this study, a novel CS-biochar/ZnO/NiO composite with adsorption-photocatalytic performance was constructed using chitosan as biochar source, and exploited for visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) and Congo red (CR). The superior photocatalytic activity of CS-biochar/ZnO/NiO than pristine ZnO, NiO and CS-biochar/ZnO under visible light, and 63 %-CS/ZnO/NiO composite has the best photocatalytic activity. The photodegradation efficiency for CR was 94.5 % within 100 min, and the apparent rate constant (k) was 0.0206 min −1 , which is about 1.87 and 3.89 times that ZnO and NiO, respectively. For TC, the photodegradation efficiency was 90 % within 45 min, and k was 0.0377 min −1 , which is about 1.74 and 2.86 times that bare NiO and ZnO, respectively, which attribute to the synergistic effect between ZnO/NiO and CS-biochar improved the activity of photocatalysts. This work presents a straightforward approach for improving photocatalytic antibiotic and dye degradation through the construction of bifunctional "hybrid" material, which have great potential for application in the removal of contaminants.

Ni/NiO/C composites were prepared by successively thermal annealing Ni-based metal organic frameworks (Ni-MOFs) in nitrogen and air atmosphere. Moreover, comparative electrochemical properties of the material before and after calcination were investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The result indicated that the Ni/NiO/C was more suitable for the matrix of myoglobin (Mb)/hemoglobin (Hb) immobilization to fabricate enzyme-based biosensor for the detection of nitrite (NO2−). Among them, the Mb-based biosensor exhibited a wider linear range from 4 to 40892 μM with a lower detection limit of 1.3 μM (S/N = 3) toward NO2−. The good electrochemical properties of Ni/NiO/C could be mainly due to the synergistic integration of MOFs-derived Ni, NiO and carbon hybrids, which could work as electron conducting pathways between the Mb (Hb) and the electrode surface to facilitate the electron transfer process. Therefore, this work suggested that MOF-derived composites have a great potential for constructing wide range of sensing interface.

Multishelled NiO hollow microspheres for high-performance supercapacitors have been prepared and the formation mechanism has been investigated. By using resin microspheres to absorb Ni 2+ and subsequent proper calcinations, the shell numbers, shell spacing and exterior shell structure were facilely controlled via varying synthetic parameters. Particularly, the exterior shell structure that accurately associated with the ion transfer is finely controlled by forming a single shell or closed exterior double-shells. Among multishelled NiO hollow microspheres, the triple-shelled NiO with an outer single-shelled microspheres show a remarkable capacity of 1280 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , and still keep a high value of 704 F g −1 even at 20 A g −1 . The outstanding performances are attributed to its fast ion/electron transfer, high specific surface area and large shell space. The specific capacitance gradually increases to 108% of its initial value after 2500 cycles, demonstrating its high stability. Importantly, the 3S-NiO-HMS//RGO@Fe 3 O 4 asymmetric supercapacitor shows an ultrahigh energy density of 51.0 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 800 W kg −1 , and 78.8% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles. Furthermore, multishelled NiO can be transferred into multishelled Ni microspheres with high-efficient H 2 generation rate of 598.5 mL H 2 min −1 g −1 Ni for catalytic hydrolysis of NH 3 BH 3 (AB).

Nanoparticles-assembled NiO nanosheets have been successfully prepared using graphene oxide (GO) film as template, where the Ni 2+ ion was firstly adsorbed in GO film, followed by calcination in N 2 to form NiO-based materials and calcination in air to remove carbon-based template. The morphology, structure, and electrochemical activities of these NiO nanosheets were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and electrochemical techniques , respectively. It is found that the NiO nanosheets thus obtained could electrochemically catalyze glucose oxidation in 0.1 M NaOH, leading to fabrication of non-enzymatic glucose sensor . The glucose sensor based on NiO nanosheets exhibits detection limit of 0.18 μM, and linear range from 1 μM to 0.4 mM with the sensitivity of 1138 μA mM −2 cm −2 . Furthermore, such glucose sensor also shows excellent selectivity for detection of glucose, compared to the commonly interfering species, such as ascorbic acid , dopamine, and uric acid .

In this work, NiO nanosheets have been successfully synthesized via a facial hydrothermal route and it was found to be an excellent catalyst for non-enzymatic glucose sensory application. The NiO nanosheets in fcc structure were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected area electron diffraction (SEAD). The thickness of NiO nanosheets were found to be 40–50 nm. This catalyst was then dropcasted on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for glucose sensory purposes. The electrochemical measurements were undertaken using both voltammetric method and amperometric method. The former offer a wide concentration range for glucose (up to 2.2 mM) but with relatively low sensitivity, whereas the latter showed excellent sensitivity with 400.29 μA mM −1 cm −2 and 1 μM detection limit. Thus the as-synthesized NiO nanosheets demonstrated potential application in non-enzymatic sensory of glucose.

A novel NiO/carbon nanotube (CNT)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) composite with a coaxial tubular nanostructure was successfully deposited on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) through electrochemical processes. The outer PEDOT matrix has a high affinity for biomolecules, while the CNT inner layer has a strong electron-transport capacity. Hence, the NiO/CNT/PEDOT/GCE was used for the simultaneous determination of dopamine (DA), serotonin (5-HT), and tryptophan (Trp). Electrochemical responses of the NiO/CNT/PEDOT/GCE sensor were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and differential pulse voltammetry. Three well-separated oxidation peaks were observed in a mixed system containing DA, 5-HT, and Trp; the 5-HT–DA and Trp–5-HT potential separations were 160 and 324 mV, respectively, owing to the synergistic effect of NiO, CNT, and PEDOT. Linear responses were obtained for DA, 5-HT, and Trp in the 0.03–20, 0.3–35, and 1–41 μM concentration ranges, with detection limits of 0.026, 0.063, and 0.210 μM, respectively. In addition, it was possible to simultaneously determine the three analytes using the NiO/CNT/PEDOT composite, which suggests that the sensor has promising applicability.

In this work, we fabricated a yolk–shell magnetic composite that contains mesoporous TiO2 as the inner shell and flowerlike NiO as the outer shell (denoted as Fe3O4@H-TiO2@f-NiO) to reduce the limitations of single-component metal oxides in phosphopeptide enrichment. The NiO nanosheets play a synergistic role in phosphopeptide enrichment. And the unique flowerlike structure of NiO with sufficient space can facilitate the reversible insertion/extraction of peptides, which will have less impact on the enrichment process of the inner TiO2 shell. The yolk–shell structure and two types of porous nanostructures endowed this composite with a high surface area (156.58 m2 g−1) and a large pore volume (0.37 cm3 g−1). Owing to the high surface area and combined properties of TiO2 and NiO, the Fe3O4@H-TiO2@f-NiO microspheres showed a better performance for phosphopeptide enrichment than the same material without NiO nanosheets (Fe3O4@H-TiO2). According to the LC-MS/MS results, 972 unique phosphopeptides were identified from HeLa cell extracts with a high selectivity (91.9%) by Fe3O4@H-TiO2@f-NiO relative to 837 phosphopeptides (selectivity: 60.2%) by Fe3O4@H-TiO2. The results demonstrated that, compared with single-component metal oxides, composite metal oxides could enhance the selectivity and sensitivity for phosphopeptide enrichment.
