Site-selective OH adsorption via in-plane Ru-N-M bridges enables practical water electrolysis

Longyu Qiu,Menggang Li,Fenyang Tian,Lin He,Wenxin Zhu,Fengyu Wu,Xue Ren,Tongbo Zhang,Zhekai Zhang,Shipeng Zhang,Jiecai Han,Weiwei Yang,Yongsheng Yu

Proposing an in-plane N-bridged structure for atomic-level robust coordination. • Strong orbital overlap redirects hydroxy adsorption from Ni/Fe sites to Ru atoms. • Optimized coordination alleviates scaling relations and suppresses Ni site oxidation. • AEMWE achieves 2 A cm 2 at 1.84 V with ultra-stable operation over 800 h. The pursuit of high-performance anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) catalysts is limited by conventional supported and lattice-doped materials, which suffer from weak interfacial coupling and suboptimal intermediate adsorption, leading to degradation under industrial conditions. Although atomic-level modulation is highly appealing, achieving a synergistic balance between robust structural stability and precise control over the reaction pathway remains challenging. Herein, by employing a nitrogen-coordinated metal bridging strategy, we report a Ru-NiFeN with atomically coordinated Ru-N bridges for practical water electrolysis. This configuration manipulates the local electronic microenvironment to trigger a site-specific redirection of OH adsorption from Fe to Ru centers, effectively bypassing host-lattice scaling-relation limitations and lowering OER barriers. In-situ spectroscopy and theoretical calculations reveal that the Ru-N bridge promotes resilient dynamic structural reconstruction, enabling potential-triggered NiOOH formation while suppressing detrimental metal oxidation. The Ru-NiFeN catalyst achieves a low overpotential of 340 mV at 1 A cm 2 and demonstrates outstanding AEMWE durability, operating for over 800 h at 2 A cm 2 with a decay rate of only 24.4 μV h 1 , positioning it among the most active catalysts reported. This work provides a strategic pathway for optimizing adsorption landscapes via atomic coordination engineering for efficient, stable energy conversion. Bridged Ce3+-OH Species Boost Hydrogen Production in the Low-Temperature Methanol Steam Reforming Reaction

Tao Liu,Donglong Fu,Cuncun Wu,Xianhua Zhang,Gamal Sewify,Mohamed Mokhtar Mostafa,Sai Chen,Chunlei Pei,Zhi-Jian Zhao,Jinlong Gong

Hydroxy groups derived from water dissociation play a crucial role in reforming chemistry. A direct experimental verification of interfacial hydroxy groups, however, together with the precise control of active -OH species for hydrogen production has not been obtained. This paper describes an interface engineering strategy to modulate active -OH species for hydrogen production from methanol steam reforming. Based on comprehensive in-situ spectroscopic characterizations, the normalized bridged Ce3+-OH species present linear correlation with the copper-ceria interface density, suggesting that bridged Ce3+-OH species are mainly adsorbed at the copper-ceria interface. The bridged Ce3+-OH species adsorbed at interfacial sites are demonstrated as the primary active configurations that react with methoxy groups to generate formate species, thereby enhancing hydrogen production in low-temperature methanol steam reforming, achieving an optimal TOFH2 of approximately 956 h-1 at 220℃. This work provides a profound insight into the intrinsic reaction at the metal-support interfacial sites for the reforming chemistry.

Cationic Complex Polymer Separator Confined Anionic [Zn(OH)4]2‒ Reduction for Stable Alkaline Batteries

Zhihao Sun,Lin Liu,Junwei Zhang,Yuhang Liu,Yifeng Wang,Ying Wan,Fanxing Bu,Bao Zhang,Wanhai Zhou,Dongyuan Zhao,Dongliang Chao

Unlike neutral aqueous batteries with cationic Zn 2+ as the charge carrier, alkaline batteries with anionic [Zn(OH) 4 ] 2‒ and OH ‒ are actually commercially feasible and thermodynamically stable thanks to their ability to suppress hydrogen evolution. Whereas commercial separators in alkaline batteries, without ion regulation capability, fail to suppress severe dendrite and passivation of anionic [Zn(OH) 4 ] 2‒ and accelerate ion transport of anionic OH ‒ . Herein, we tailor the coordination structures of alkali-stable cationic complexes in polymer separators (CCPS) to construct anionic OH ‒ selective transfer channels. Synchrotron spectroscopic characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that the low-coordination cationic complexes expose more positive charge density, electrostatically attracting more negative charge from [Zn(OH) 4 ] 2‒ . In situ electrochemical digital holography technology and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry analyses further confirm the homogeneous [Zn(OH) 4 ] 2‒ distribution at the CCPS-electrode interface, oriented Zn deposition, and impeded passivation. As a result, CCPS enables alkaline Zn||Cu cells to operate over 5500 cycles at 1 mA cm ‒2 with a high coulombic efficiency of 99.99%. Alkaline Ni–Zn batteries exhibit ultrastable cycling over 1000 cycles at 6 C and maintain 86.17% of their maximum capacity at 10 C. Our work may provide practical and effective separator strategies to accelerate the commercialization of alkaline batteries.

Monolithic Co-doped UiO-66-OH Metal-organic Gels for removal of tetracycline from water

Song He,Junqing Zhu,Jiayi Tang,Jinfeng Ji,Yajun Huang,Ye Li

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become a focal point of interest owing to their ability to remove contaminants from wastewater. However, the typical powder form of MOFs is difficult to recover after use, which hinders their practical application. In this research, UiO-66-OH gel was synthesized at room temperature. On this basis, Co was doped into UiO-66-OH gel to obtain a series of Co@U-OH-X composites. The [email protected] exhibited an adsorption capacity for TC that was 5.1 times higher compared to the UiO-66-OH gel. Furthermore, the influence of pH, coexisting ions, humic acid, and original concentration of TC on the adsorption of [email protected] was examined. The composite materials demonstrated an exceptional capacity to adsorb TC (182.31   mg·g -1 ), which surpassed the performance of numerous previously documented adsorbents. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model efficiently accounted for the adsorptive interaction. Thermodynamic adsorption analyses indicated that the interaction occurred spontaneously and accompanied by heat absorption. After four cycles, there was only a 12.7% reduction in the removal rate of TC, which suggested that the composite materials were recyclable. [email protected] showed remarkable adsorption capacity even in settings with minimal TC concentration. The exceptional adsorptive performance, superior recyclability and aqueous stability established Co@U-OH-X composites as a viable adsorbent contender for eliminating TC.

Boosting electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia via Cu2O/Cu(OH)2 heterostructures promoting electron transfer

Geng Jing,Ji Sihan

Electrocatalytic nitrate ( \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) ) reduction to ammonia (NH 3 ) offers a viable approach for sustainable NH 3 production and environmental denitrification. Copper (Cu) possesses a distinctive electronic structure, which can augment the reaction kinetics of \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) and impede hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), rendering it a promising contender for the electrosynthesis of NH 3 from \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) . Nevertheless, the role of Cu 2 O in copper-based catalysts still requires further investigation for a more comprehensive understanding. Herein, the Cu 2 O/Cu(OH) 2 heterostructures are successfully fabricated through liquid laser irradiation using CuO nanoparticles as a precursor. Experimental and theoretical researches reveal that Cu 2 O/Cu(OH) 2 heterostructure exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic performance for \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) to NH 3 because Cu(OH) 2 promotes electron transfer and reduces the valence state of Cu active site in Cu 2 O. At −0.6 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)), the NH 3 yield reaches its maximum at 1630.66 ± 29.72 \({\rm{\mu g}} \cdot {{\rm{h}}^{ - 1}} \cdot {\rm{m}}{{\rm{g}}_{{\rm{cat}}}}^{ - 1}\) , while the maximum of Faraday efficiency (FE) is 76.95% ± 5.51%. This study expands the technical scope of copper-based catalyst preparation and enhances the understanding of the electrocatalytic mechanism of \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) to NH 3 .

Electronic Metal–Support Interactions between Pt Nanoparticles and Co(OH)2 Flakes for CO Oxidation

Xueyang Song,Li Huang,Wenxue He,Chengyong Liu,Fengchun Hu,Yong Jiang,Zhihu Sun,Shiqiang Wei

Electronic metal–support interactions (EMSIs) have opened a new way to tailor the electronic and catalytic properties of supported catalysts. Herein, we demonstrate the EMSIs between Pt nanoparticles and Co(OH)2 flakes grown on SiO2 and show its beneficial effect on enhancing the CO oxidation activity. The EMSI characteristics of the Pt–Co(OH)2/SiO2 catalyst are identified by in situ X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and transmission electron microscopy. Quantitative XAFS analysis reveals the presence of metallic-like Pt–Co bonds. The formation of Pt–Co intermetallic bonds allows for electron donation form Co to Pt, leading to the negative charging of the Pt atoms as evidenced by reduced Pt 2p-to-5d electron-transition intensity detected by XAFS spectroscopy and the emergence of a CO adsorption band at 2063 cm–1 in DRIFTS. The significance of EMSIs is manifested by comparing the CO oxidation activity over the Pt–Co(OH)2/SiO2 and Pt/SiO2 catalysts with similar Pt loadings. Pt–Co(OH)2/SiO2 is superior to Pt/SiO2 in both the apparent activation energy (19 vs 64 kJ/mol) and the turnover frequency (0.03 vs 0.003 s–1 at 37 °C). The enhanced activity is attributed to the negative charging of Pt, which downshifts the d-band center and reduces the CO adsorption strength.

Yang Su,Hai-Lin Ren,Shuai Zhao,Ping-Ping Sun,Jia-Qi Li,Xiao-Min Wang

In this paper, [Ni 0.9 Co 0.1 ](OH) 2 precursor is used to dope H 3 BO 3 to synthesize positive electrode material when mixing lithium in wet method, and to explore the best doping by testing the microscopic morphology and electrochemical performance of the positive electrode material amount and calcination temperature. After doping with B, the microstructure of the material is improved, and the primary crystal grains are oriented and agglomerated into a needle shape. This good crystal structure can slow down the generation of grain microcracks and mechanical fracture, and improve the cycle stability of the positive electrode material. After doping B, the discharge specific capacity was slightly improved. When the calcination temperature is 750 °C and the doping amount of B is 1.0 mol%, the first discharge specific capacity reaches 223 mAh g −1 . More importantly, the capacity retention rate of the battery after 100 cycles has been greatly improved, from 74 % without doping B to 87 %. Graphical Li-ion Batteries : The B-doping improves the microstructure of the material, and the primary grains are oriented and agglomerated into a long needle shape. This good crystal structure can slow down the generation of grain microcracks and mechanical breakage, and improve the cycling stability of the cathode material.

Surface-oxidized RuCu single-atom alloy enables accelerated alkaline hydrogen evolution through tuned OH adsorption

Shencheng Pan,Min Bi,Jingyi Wang,Zhouping Jiang,Yan Zhou,Zhen Wu,Xin Wang,Junwu Zhu,Yongsheng Fu

Surface-oxidized RuCu single-atom alloy synthesized via PLIL. • Ultrafine ~3 nm particles with atomically dispersed Cu and surface oxide. • Downshifted d-band center weakens *OH adsorption and optimizes ΔG H . • Superior alkaline HER: 27.5 mV@10 mA cm −2 , Tafel 24.2 mV dec −1 . • Synergistic Cu and surface oxidation modulation enhances water dissociation. Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media is severely hindered by sluggish water dissociation kinetics and the strong adsorption of hydroxyl intermediates (*OH). Herein, we report a surface-oxidized RuCu single-atom alloy (RuCuO) supported on carbon nanotubes, synthesized via a pulsed laser irradiation in liquids (PLIL) strategy. The resulting catalyst features ultrafine nanoparticles (~3 nm) with atomically dispersed Cu and an in situ formed surface oxide layer. Benefiting from the synergistic electronic modulation induced by Cu incorporation and surface oxidation, the d-band center of Ru is downshifted, leading to weakened *OH adsorption and optimized hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔG H ). As a result, RuCuO exhibits outstanding HER performance in alkaline media, delivering a low overpotential of 27.5 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 24.2 mV dec −1 , surpassing commercial Pt/C. Mechanistic investigations combining X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations reveal that the surface oxide layer not only suppresses *OH poisoning but also enhances H 2 O adsorption and dissociation. This work provides a viable strategy for designing high-performance alkaline HER catalysts through surface oxidation engineering of single-atom alloys. A surface-oxidized RuCu nanoalloy was prepared via pulsed laser irradiation in liquids (PLIL), enabling in situ surface oxidation and electronic structure modulation. The optimized surface electronic environment tunes OH adsorption and delivers enhanced hydrogen evolution activity. Download: Download high-res image (126KB) Download: Download full-size image

Assembly of Ni(OH)2-based electrodes without material synthesis step for application in supercapacitors

Shi Min,Li Yanhong,Wang Li,Li Jing,Wang Meiri,Cui Hongtao

Abstract In this work, a facile material synthesis step-free strategy for the cost-effective assembly of Ni(OH) 2 -based electrodes was reported. The Ni(OH) 2 /MWCNTs composite electrodes for application in supercapacitors were assembled through the in-situ reaction of NiCl 2 ·6H 2 O in nickel foam as current collector with alkaline electrolyte. The characterization results indicated that NiCl 2 ·6H 2 O as raw material in electrode underwent the phase transformation from NiCl 2 ·6H 2 O to β-Ni(OH) 2 in electrolyte solution. The produced β-Ni(OH) 2 presented the same phase and same sheet morphology with thin thickness before and after electrochemical measurement. Based on the results of electrochemical measurement, 20 wt% was determined as the optimum content of MWCNTs for the assembly of electrodes. The as-assembled electrode with optimized content of MWCNTs exhibited high specific capacitance of 2001.4 F g −1 at current density of 3.2 A g −1 . This electrochemical performance of electrode could be attributed to the 2D flexible sheet morphology of Ni(OH) 2 and the improvement of electric conductivity by MWCNTs. Graphical abstract

Inorganic hydrogen-bonded SnO(OH)2 as molecular springs boosted the piezocatalytic degradation of contaminants

Xiao Huang,Wen Yan,Jingxiang Sun,Tao Hu,Jinxi Feng,Zhen Huang,Shuanghong Tian,Ya Xiong

The achievement of highly active and stable piezocatalysts is still challenging for the efficient transformation of mechanical energy to chemical energy. Herein various SnOxHy species were prepared by a simple precipitation–thermal treatment method and applied for the piezocatalytic degradation of tricyclazole. It is found that the catalytic activity depended on the thermal treatment and follows the order SnO(OH)2 (80 °C) > SnO2.55H1.1 (200 °C) > SnO2.3H0.6 (300 °C) > SnO2.22H0.24 (400 °C) > SnO2 (500 °C) > rutile SnO2 (800 °C). SnO(OH)2 (80 °C) boosted the degradation of tricyclazole and the reaction constant reached as high as 0.0354 min−1, 7.1 fold that of SnO2 (800 °C). The differences among these SnOxOHy piezocatalysts mainly stemmed from the dissimilarity of the relative content of SnO(OH)2. In addition to the Sn–O piezoelectric motif, SnO(OH)2 had rich hydrogen bond networks, which work like molecular springs under external pressure. Due to such a special structure, SnO(OH)2 had not only a super high piezoelectric constant (d33) of 409.1 pm V−1 among the currently reported piezomaterials, but also a 0.49 eV-higher valence band than SnO2, being beneficial to the generation of stronger oxidative ˙OH. This is the first example of inorganic hydrogen-bonded piezomaterials, which opens a new window to develop advanced piezocatalysts for highly efficient degradation of refractory pollutants by piezocatalysis.

Alkylamine-Confined Thickness-Tunable Synthesis of Co(OH)2-CoO Nanosheets toward Oxygen Evolution Catalysis

Chuansheng He,Linlin Yang,Xiaohui Peng,Shangheng Liu,Jia Wang,Chengyuan Dong,Delin Du,Leigang Li,Lingzheng Bu,Xiaoqing Huang

Thickness regulation of transition metal hydroxides/oxides nanosheets with superior catalytic properties represents a promising strategy to enhance catalytic performance, but it remains an enormous challenge to achieve precise control, especially when it comes to the ultrathin limit (several atomic layers). In this work, a facile strategy of alkylamine-confined growth is proposed for the synthesis of thickness-tunable metal hydroxide/oxide nanosheets. Specifically, ultrathin cobalt hydroxide and cobaltous oxide hybrid (Co(OH)2-CoO) nanosheets (Co–O NSs) with a thickness in the range of 2–6 nm (5–13 atomic layers) are synthesized by using alkylamines with different carbon chain lengths as the ligand to modulate vertical coordination ability. Co–O NSs with a thickness of 2 nm (Co–O NSs-2 nm) exhibit excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance with an overpotential of 278 mV at 10 mA/cm2. The maximized number of active sites including oxygen vacancies, optimal adsorption strength, and the highest electrical conductivity are considered as the potential factors contributing to the excellent OER performance of Co–O NSs-2 nm. This work holds great significance for the precise thickness-tunable synthesis of transition metal layered hydroxide nanosheets with modulated and improved catalytic performance.

Cu@S-Co(OH)2 hybrid electrocatalysts with high performance for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Chunyan Fan,Zehao Zang,Xiang Li,Junfang Zhang,Ping Yang,Lanlan Li,Xiaofei Yu,Xiaojing Yang,Zunming Lu,Xinghua Zhang

Transition metal hydroxides have superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity but poor hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, which greatly limits the water splitting for hydrogen production. Herein, copper modification of sulfur doped Co(OH) 2 hybrid catalyst (Cu@S-Co(OH) 2 ) was prepared by one-step of electrodeposition method which can serve as efficient hydrogen evolution reaction catalyst. In the presence of sulfur and copper, Cu@S-Co(OH) 2 hybrid catalyst exhibits the best catalytic activity, showing ultralow overpotential of 42 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Compared with Co(OH) 2 , the overpotential is improved by nearly 100 mV as well as enhanced stability. In addition, the active site poison experiments proved that the active center is cobalt metal. Combined with the adsorption strength of the catalyst for OH and H species, it is considered that both S and Cu can enhance the adsorption of OH for Co(OH) 2 , while S is contributed to the adsorption of H, and Cu can promote the desorption of H. This work provides a facile method and new insight to enhance the HER activity for transitional metal hydroxides via metal and non-metallic elements co-modulation.
