Interfacial engineering of NiMn-LDH@Rh(OH)3 Heterojunctions for Promoted electrocatalytic urea oxidation

Qiangli Lv,Haoran Guo,Duo Xu,Yuling Zhai,Hua Wang,Tao Zhu,Xing Zhu,Kongzhai Li,Zhihong Yang,Zhishan Li

The urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is considered as an alternative to the oxygen evolution reaction for high-efficiency hydrogen production, because it can simultaneously achieve wastewater treatment and hydrogen production. However, the slow kinetics of the UOR hinder its widespread adoption due to relatively complex molecule, it is urgent to rational design and preparation of high-performance UOR catalysts. Herein, we report a simple synthesis of the NiMn-LDH@Rh(OH) 3 heterostructure and a systematic investigation of urea-assisted electrolytic hydrogen production, significantly enhances the efficiency of urea electrolysis. The amorphous Rh(OH) 3 structure provides a higher density of active sites and greater catalytic surface exposure, while the synergistic interaction between Rh(OH) 3 and NiMn-LDH improves both electrical conductivity and catalytic performance. The catalyst of NiMn-LDH@Rh(OH) 3 –3 requires only 1.29 V overpotential to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in a 1.0 M KOH and 0.33 M urea solution, surpassing other catalysts. Furthermore, it demonstrates remarkable stability with minimal potential increase during 48-hour chronopotentiometric tests at 100 mA cm −2 . This work making the developed strategy promising for the rational design of highly active electrocatalysts for green hydrogen production and the treatment of urea-rich wastewater.

Construction of Cu3+-OH-Pt Interface for Enhancing Glycerol Electrooxidation Coupled with Hydrogen Evolution

Kaiwei Meng,Ziyi Fan,Huiming Wen,Yujie Hu,Wenjun Zhang,Zupeng Chen

The electrochemical conversion of glycerol-a biodiesel byproduct into formic acid coupled with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) offers a green route for biomass utilization. However, existing systems suffer from high energy demands and insufficient selectivity. Herein, a self-grown copper oxide nanorods decorated with platinum species (Pt/CuO NRs) is developed, reaching a current density of 20 mA cm-2 at 1.14 V vs. RHE, with 97.4% formic acid selectivity at 1.40 V vs. RHE and nearly 100% glycerol conversion. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and in situ Raman spectroscopy reveal that Pt0 sites enhance electron transfer at the Cu3+-OH-Pt interface, facilitating CuⅢ-OOH formation. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis shows that Pt weakens O-H bond strength in CuOOH and lowers the dehydrogenation energy barrier, synergistically boosting GOR. Furthermore, a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) with Pt/CuO NRs as the anode and Pt/CuOx (c-Pt/CuOx) as the cathode is established for GOR and HER, respectively, which can operate at 1.55 V for a current density of 100 mA cm-2, reducing the potential by 380 mV compared to water splitting. The developed GOR(+)||HER(-) electrolyzer demonstrates stable performance for 100 hours at 150 mA cm-2, with a formic acid selectivity of 90%. This represents a significant improvement over existing copper-based catalysts, highlighting the green chemistry advantages. The techno-economic analysis demonstrated the economic viability of electrochemically converting glycerol into potassium dicarboxylate (KDF) and H₂, with processing costs of $4655-4797 per ton and a market value of $6389 per ton at representative commercial current densities of 100 and 300 mA cm-2.

NiFe hydroxide has emerged as a highly promising electrocatalyst in water electrolysis, yet its application in catalyzing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains challenging. Herein, we report a corrosion-reconstruction strategy to fabricate RuO2 nanocluster-endowed NiFe hydroxide [RuO2/NiFe(OH)x] as an efficient electrocatalyst for HER application. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide insight into the HER mechanism, revealing that the reconstructed surface enriched with RuO2 nanoclusters optimally adsorbs water molecules. This modification also induces a shift of the *H adsorption site from oxygen atoms to ruthenium atoms due to electron transfer effects, facilitating the desorption of *H and promoting efficient H2 formation. The synthesized RuO2/NiFe(OH)x catalyst delivers prominent HER activity (149 mV at 100 mA cm-2) and robust operational stability in a water-splitting device, sustaining 200 mA cm-2 for 100 h with almost no obvious voltage increment. Importantly, the fabrication of a large-area electrode demonstrates that this simple, room-temperature corrosion-reconstruction strategy is a promising and viable route for the application of HER electrocatalysts.

Heterostructure of Mn3O4 nanoparticles on Cu(OH)2 nanowire arrays for electrocatalytic water oxidation

Zhenhua Ge,Bin Fu,Xing Li,Jinping Zhao,Bo Ma,Zhiqiang Luo,Yantao Chen

Electrochemical water splitting is a very prospective technique to obtain the green hydrogen fuel . The oxygen evolution reaction becomes a limitation owing to the multiple electron transfer process. Thereby, a lot of attention is paid on the development of noble-metal free electrocatalysts for boosting the water oxidation process . The heterostructure of Mn 3 O 4 nanoparticles on Cu(OH) 2 nanowire arrays is fabricated, which exhibits an electrocatalytic activity close to RuO 2 . Compared with the single (hydro)oxides, the largely improved performance of the heterostructure towards water oxidation can be attributed to the enhanced charge transfer by the electronic interaction across the interface and the increased active sites for the rational combination of different active species . This work can be valuable for highlighting the role of heterostructure in the design and development of novel transition metal-based electrocatalysts for water oxidation.

Development of a novel cathodic deposition method for thin-film metal azolate frameworks toward Cd2+ adsorption

Jie Ding,Xiaoxuan Yuan,Jinfeng Wang,Wenfeng Mao,Jianzhong Huo,Jingbo Zhang

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have attracted much attention due to its large specific surface, flexible porosity and unsaturated coordination bonds. Cathodic deposition is a unique in-situ potential-driven synthesis method for the deposition of thin film MOFs; however, the gradually consumption of reactants during cathodic deposition might lead to unstable and uncontrollable reaction during thin-film MOF deposition. Herein, oxygen is selected as the initial reactant for the formation of OH − , which can result in gradually and successive formation of thin-film MAF-66 (Metal azolate framework-66), and the particle size and film thickness of the MAF-66 film can be easily tuned by the deposition time. Furthermore, the cathodic deposited thin-film MAF-66 show good adsorption property for heavy metal ions , with Cd 2+ as a representative species. The adsorption capacity can reach 32.3 mg/g (removal ratio: 69%) and the deposited MAF-66 film can achieve a satisfactory recovery degree with structural and morphological stability. In this way, a novel, environmental-friendly, and controllable cathode deposition method is developed for preparation of thin-film MAF-66, which also show great promise as a candidate for heavy metal ions adsorbent.

Enhancing CO2 electroreduction performance by regulating interfacial structure of Ag/Zn(OH)F-derived catalysts

Rongjing Jia,Shuling Chang,Ruirui Wang,Yanhong Xu,Rijie Wang,Lihong Zhang

The electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction to CO (ECO 2 RR) is an effective way to achieve carbon resource utilization. It requires catalysts that can synergistically couple CO 2 activation with efficient CO desorption. This work engineers this synergy by constructing an interfacial Ag δ+ -O-Zn configuration on Zn(OH)F-derived supports via controlled Ag loading (0–5 wt%). The optimal catalyst (3A/Z, 3 wt% Ag) balances the formation of interfacial, oxidized Ag species (Ag δ+ ) with well-dispersed metallic Ag 0 nanoparticles. It achieves a CO Faradaic efficiency of 95.4% at −1.15 V vs. RHE and maintains 86% efficiency over 5 h at 6.38 mA cm −2 . In-situ ATR-SEIRAS spectra and kinetics reveal that Ag δ+ -related sites lower the barrier for *COOH formation, while adjacent Ag 0 domains facilitate *CO desorption. Excessive loading (5A/Z) promotes Ag aggregation and support decomposition, diminishing the critical Ag δ+ -O-Zn interface and performance. This study highlights interface coordination engineering as a key strategy for designing bifunctional ECO 2 RR catalysts.

Heterostructured Nanocomposites of NiCo–S@Ni(OH)2 on Ni Foam for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Junxiang Mo,Jun Li,Jing Li,Yashan Li

The development of composite materials is a key area of research for enhancing the electrochemical performance of electrode materials. In this study, NiCo–S nanostructured hybrid electrode materials were prepared on nickel foam (NF) by using binary metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as the sacrificial template through a two-step hydrothermal method. Ni–MOF was then deposited on the surface of NiCo–S/NF through the hydrothermal method and subsequently converted into Ni(OH) 2 through a subsequent alkalization treatment. The duration of the Ni–MOF hydrothermal process was varied as a parameter. NiCo–S@Ni–MOF/NF was prepared through hydrothermal reaction for 6 h, 9 h and 12 h, followed by heating in a 6 M KOH solution at 75 ∘ C for 6 h in a water bath. The electrode materials with the best morphology and electrochemical properties were obtained when the hydrothermal reaction time was 6 h. The optimized electrode had a specific capacity of 2533.2 F ⋅ g − 1 at 1 A ⋅ g − 1 and a capacity retention rate of 60.8% at 10 A ⋅ g − 1 , which indicated good rate performance. Additionally, the electrode material demonstrated excellent cycling stability, with a capacity retention rate of 95.3% after 5000 cycles at 50 mV ⋅ s − 1 . The energy density of the hybrid supercapacitor device assembled from this electrode material was 33.5 Wh ⋅ kg − 1 when the power density was 849.89 W ⋅ kg − 1 at a current density of 1 A ⋅ g − 1 .

Electronic Metal–Support Interactions between Pt Nanoparticles and Co(OH)2 Flakes for CO Oxidation

Xueyang Song,Li Huang,Wenxue He,Chengyong Liu,Fengchun Hu,Yong Jiang,Zhihu Sun,Shiqiang Wei

Electronic metal–support interactions (EMSIs) have opened a new way to tailor the electronic and catalytic properties of supported catalysts. Herein, we demonstrate the EMSIs between Pt nanoparticles and Co(OH)2 flakes grown on SiO2 and show its beneficial effect on enhancing the CO oxidation activity. The EMSI characteristics of the Pt–Co(OH)2/SiO2 catalyst are identified by in situ X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and transmission electron microscopy. Quantitative XAFS analysis reveals the presence of metallic-like Pt–Co bonds. The formation of Pt–Co intermetallic bonds allows for electron donation form Co to Pt, leading to the negative charging of the Pt atoms as evidenced by reduced Pt 2p-to-5d electron-transition intensity detected by XAFS spectroscopy and the emergence of a CO adsorption band at 2063 cm–1 in DRIFTS. The significance of EMSIs is manifested by comparing the CO oxidation activity over the Pt–Co(OH)2/SiO2 and Pt/SiO2 catalysts with similar Pt loadings. Pt–Co(OH)2/SiO2 is superior to Pt/SiO2 in both the apparent activation energy (19 vs 64 kJ/mol) and the turnover frequency (0.03 vs 0.003 s–1 at 37 °C). The enhanced activity is attributed to the negative charging of Pt, which downshifts the d-band center and reduces the CO adsorption strength.

Boric Acid Doping Improves Electrochemical Performance of [Ni0.9Co0.1](OH)2 Cathode for Li-ion Batteries

Yang Su,Hai-Lin Ren,Shuai Zhao,Ping-Ping Sun,Jia-Qi Li,Xiao-Min Wang

In this paper, [Ni 0.9 Co 0.1 ](OH) 2 precursor is used to dope H 3 BO 3 to synthesize positive electrode material when mixing lithium in wet method, and to explore the best doping by testing the microscopic morphology and electrochemical performance of the positive electrode material amount and calcination temperature. After doping with B, the microstructure of the material is improved, and the primary crystal grains are oriented and agglomerated into a needle shape. This good crystal structure can slow down the generation of grain microcracks and mechanical fracture, and improve the cycle stability of the positive electrode material. After doping B, the discharge specific capacity was slightly improved. When the calcination temperature is 750 °C and the doping amount of B is 1.0 mol%, the first discharge specific capacity reaches 223 mAh g −1 . More importantly, the capacity retention rate of the battery after 100 cycles has been greatly improved, from 74 % without doping B to 87 %. Graphical Li-ion Batteries : The B-doping improves the microstructure of the material, and the primary grains are oriented and agglomerated into a long needle shape. This good crystal structure can slow down the generation of grain microcracks and mechanical breakage, and improve the cycling stability of the cathode material.

Assembly of Ni(OH)2-based electrodes without material synthesis step for application in supercapacitors

Shi Min,Li Yanhong,Wang Li,Li Jing,Wang Meiri,Cui Hongtao

Abstract In this work, a facile material synthesis step-free strategy for the cost-effective assembly of Ni(OH) 2 -based electrodes was reported. The Ni(OH) 2 /MWCNTs composite electrodes for application in supercapacitors were assembled through the in-situ reaction of NiCl 2 ·6H 2 O in nickel foam as current collector with alkaline electrolyte. The characterization results indicated that NiCl 2 ·6H 2 O as raw material in electrode underwent the phase transformation from NiCl 2 ·6H 2 O to β-Ni(OH) 2 in electrolyte solution. The produced β-Ni(OH) 2 presented the same phase and same sheet morphology with thin thickness before and after electrochemical measurement. Based on the results of electrochemical measurement, 20 wt% was determined as the optimum content of MWCNTs for the assembly of electrodes. The as-assembled electrode with optimized content of MWCNTs exhibited high specific capacitance of 2001.4 F g −1 at current density of 3.2 A g −1 . This electrochemical performance of electrode could be attributed to the 2D flexible sheet morphology of Ni(OH) 2 and the improvement of electric conductivity by MWCNTs. Graphical abstract

Boosting electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia via Cu2O/Cu(OH)2 heterostructures promoting electron transfer

Geng Jing,Ji Sihan

Electrocatalytic nitrate ( \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) ) reduction to ammonia (NH 3 ) offers a viable approach for sustainable NH 3 production and environmental denitrification. Copper (Cu) possesses a distinctive electronic structure, which can augment the reaction kinetics of \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) and impede hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), rendering it a promising contender for the electrosynthesis of NH 3 from \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) . Nevertheless, the role of Cu 2 O in copper-based catalysts still requires further investigation for a more comprehensive understanding. Herein, the Cu 2 O/Cu(OH) 2 heterostructures are successfully fabricated through liquid laser irradiation using CuO nanoparticles as a precursor. Experimental and theoretical researches reveal that Cu 2 O/Cu(OH) 2 heterostructure exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic performance for \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) to NH 3 because Cu(OH) 2 promotes electron transfer and reduces the valence state of Cu active site in Cu 2 O. At −0.6 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)), the NH 3 yield reaches its maximum at 1630.66 ± 29.72 \({\rm{\mu g}} \cdot {{\rm{h}}^{ - 1}} \cdot {\rm{m}}{{\rm{g}}_{{\rm{cat}}}}^{ - 1}\) , while the maximum of Faraday efficiency (FE) is 76.95% ± 5.51%. This study expands the technical scope of copper-based catalyst preparation and enhances the understanding of the electrocatalytic mechanism of \({\rm{N}}{{\rm{O}}_3}^ -\) to NH 3 .

Robust dual-heterojunction Pt/CeO2-Ni(OH)2 bifunctional electrocatalyst toward efficient overall water splitting

Xiangyang Gao,Xin Liu,Chenxi Zhou,Qiyan Wang,Ruya Guo

Tailoring efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst with dual-heterojunction is crucial for overall water splitting (OWS). Herein, a multicomponent bifunctional catalyst with dual-heterojunction is rapidly constructed via sequential electrodeposition for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that bidirectional electron transfer at the interface induces a double built-in electric field (BIEF) in Pt/CeO 2 -Ni(OH) 2 , which offers additional impetus for electron transport and brings the d -band center closer to the Fermi level, thereby optimizing reaction kinetics and the adsorption of reaction intermediates. Active Pt and CeO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) are uniformly anchored on the stable Ni(OH) 2 nanoflocs, ensuring high exposure of active sites and preventing NPs aggregation. Meanwhile, Ni(OH) 2 , serving as abundant electron donor center, forms dual heterointerface with Pt and CeO 2 (Pt-Ni(OH) 2 and CeO 2 -Ni(OH) 2 ), which ensures structural stability during electrochemical processes. Benefiting from the dual-heterojunction and the unique structure design, Pt/CeO 2 -Ni(OH) 2 exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance, requiring only 66 mV (10 mA cm −2 ) and 278 mV (100 mA cm −2 ) for HER and OER, respectively. Remarkably, the two-electrode electrolyzer based on Pt/CeO 2 -Ni(OH) 2 electrode requires only 1.49 V to deliver 10 mA cm −2 with an excellent durability for OWS. This work brings light to the rational design and directional construction of bifunctional electrocatalyst hybrid nanomaterials with multiple heterojunctions.
