Fabrication of an environmentally-friendly PEDOT:PSS/MoS2 composite ink for the application of inkjet-printed high-performance flexible micro-supercapacitors

Xiyue Chen,Jingcheng Xia,Zhantong Tu,Kaiqi Chen,Shiyuan Wei,Ruxue Yang,Bing Lei,Sheng Liu,Xin Wu

The prosperity of flexible and wearable electronic devices stimulates the increasing demand for high flexibility and miniaturization of energy storage devices. Inkjet printing allows rapid, low-cost, and precise large-scale production of flexible electronics, and injects new blood into the fabrication technology community. The synergistic coupling effect of Poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): Poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) brings possibility to enhance the performance of micro-supercapacitors (MSCs). In this work, for the first time an aqueous and non-toxic printable PEDOT:PSS/MoS 2 composite ink is prepared for inkjet printing of paper-based MSCs. The influences of composite ratio of inks and electrode thickness on the device performance are detailedly explored, and the optimized parameters are uncovered. The maximum areal capacitance for the printed MSCs could reach 1.572 mF/cm 2 , and maintain 97.4 % of capacity at high current densities (60 μA/cm 2 ), and the maximum areal energy density could reach 0.22 μWh/cm 2 under a power density of 4.97 μW/cm 2 , indicating great potential for the applications on wearable energy storage systems.

In-situ cladding PEDOT:PSS on V-doped NCA cathodes for optimized interface and high electrochemical performance of Li-ion battery

Xueting Pei,Yonghui Chen,Yu Han,Dongyan Zhang,Yuan Ha,Zhimin Li,Yuan Wang

The LiNi 0.8 Co 0.15 Al 0.05 O 2 (NCA) nickel-rich layered cathode material is widely used for Li-ion batteries because of its excellent structural stability and high specific capacity. However, the Li/Ni mixing effect and the generation of interfacial secondary reactions in NCA cathode materials reduce the electrochemical properties of Li-ion batteries. Herein, we report a series of vanadium (V)-doped NCA cathode (VNCA) materials with different amounts of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) polymers in-situ coated on the surface using a liquid-phase method. The introduction of PEDOT:PSS coating not only improves the conductivity of NCA cathode materials but also protects the surface of cathode materials from cracking during the cycle. Electrochemical results show that the PEDOT:PSS (2 wt%) coating possesses high capacity retention rate (83.58%) after 200 cycles at 1 C, which is better than that of the sample without coating (66.7%). The PEDOT:PSS (2 wt%) coated cathode materials also display superior rate performance to VNCA at high magnification. This work provides new methods and theoretical guidance for the development of efficient ternary cathode materials for Li-ion batteries.

A moist-electric generator fabricated from the multilevel porous cellulose-based aerogel enhanced by incorporating MOF-801 and conductive PEDOT:PSS

Siru Su,Duoduo Li,Xue Tang,Junjie Ma,Lichao Zou,Qiuyun Chen,Lei Xiao,Zhifeng Zhao,Jiabin Chen,Zhigao Liu,Quanping Yuan

Natural cellulose aerogels with super-hygroscopicity and biocompatibility have attracted much attention in the development of moist-electric generators (MEGs) and are considered an important strategy to tackle the current energy crisis. However, conventional cellulose aerogels exhibit limited voltage output due to their intrinsic structural characteristics, which significantly restricts their practical applications. Herein, a hierarchically porous aerogel with conductive network is constructed by loading metal-organic framework 801 (MOF-801) onto a cellulose nanofiber substrate, followed by incorporation of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS). The combination of MOF-801 micropores with the macropores/mesopores of the cellulose network increases the specific surface area from 146.2 to 610.1 m 2 /g and creates abundant ionizable sites for continuous hydronium (H₃O + ) generation under humid conditions. PEDOT:PSS forms a three-dimensional percolating conductive network and introduces additional sulfonate groups, which together reduce carrier-transport resistance and couple ion and electron transport. As a result, the 10-CPM-MEG achieves an open-circuit voltage (V OC ) of 7.00 V at 85 % relative humidity (RH) and maintains a V OC of 0.52 V even at 33 % RH. Series-connected 10-CPM-MEGs can power LEDs and produce a sustained current of 0.14 μA under high-temperature steam conditions (80 °C, 90 % RH). This moist-electric energy harvesting system demonstrates significant potential for high-voltage electronics applications while providing a viable pathway for recovering low-grade thermal energy from industrial waste steam.

Dual-template engineered PEDOT:PSS aerogels with hierarchical porous networks and enhanced mechanical robustness for electromagnetic interference shielding and strain sensing

Jinhao Gao,Zhuoqing Zhang,Xiaohong Jiang,Wenliang Zhang,Hanbin Liu,Haiwei Wu,Guodong Liu

Lightweight conductive aerogels that combine mechanical robustness, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, and strain sensing are desirable for wearable electronics and intelligent electromagnetic protection. However, conventional conductive polymer aerogels often suffer from fragile porous frameworks and unstable conductive pathways. It remains challenging to simultaneously achieve low density, structural robustness, and functional reliability. Herein, a dual-template engineering strategy integrating bubble templating and ice templating is proposed to construct all-polymer PVA/PAA@PEGDMA/PEDOT:PSS aerogels with hierarchical conductive architectures. In this design, bubble templating generates interconnected macropores that reduce density, provide deformation space, and promote electromagnetic-wave scattering. Directional ice templating forms secondary porous skeletons within the pore walls to reinforce the framework and stabilize conductive pathways. Benefiting from this multiscale structural coupling, the PPPA aerogel series exhibits a low densities ranging from 31.88 to 72.41 mg cm⁻ 3 . The optimized PPPA-2 aerogel shows high electrical conductivities up to 15.51 S m⁻ 1 , compressive strength above 600 kPa, and a modulus approaching 5 MPa. At a thickness of 8 mm, the optimized aerogel achieves an EMI shielding effectiveness of 55.5 dB in the X-band and an SSE/t of 1104 dB cm 2 g⁻ 1 . Moreover, the aerogels show reliable piezoresistive sensing with a gauge factor of 1.35 and fast response/recovery times of 141/147 ms. This work demonstrates a hierarchical pore-network design strategy for stabilizing conductive polymer aerogels and advancing multifunctional lightweight EMI shielding materials. A Flexible Pressure/Temperature Sensor Based on CNTs/PEDOT:PSS/PVA/Silicone Rubber Composites for Motion Recognition and Battery Temperature Monitoring

Zhao Yunong,Xu Qiang,Zhou Ziyuan,Lan Haoyu,He Xinran,Wang Zihan,Li Zitian,He Chengrui,Chen Honglin,Duan Zhangling,Gong Maogao,Lin Ting-Jung,Hong Qi,Guo Xiaohui

Simultaneous sensing of pressure and temperature is essential for next-generation flexible electronics and electronic skin. However, signal crosstalk between different stimuli and the reliance on complex signal-processing circuits remain major challenges in multifunctional sensor design. Herein, a self-decoupled flexible pressure–temperature dual-modal sensor is developed by integrating a piezoresistive pressure-sensitive layer composed of silicone rubber (SR) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with a thermoelectric temperature-sensitive layer based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS). Benefiting from the physical separation of the piezoresistive and thermoelectric sensing mechanisms, pressure and temperature are independently converted into resistance and voltage signals, respectively, enabling intrinsic signal decoupling without additional signal-processing circuits or postprocessing algorithms. The sensor exhibits favorable pressure-sensing performance, including a high sensitivity of 16.999 kPa –1 (0–2.06 kPa), a wide detection range of 0–103.31 kPa, fast response/recovery times (50 ms/50 ms), and outstanding durability over 6000 loading cycles while remaining insensitive to temperature variation. Meanwhile, the thermoelectric unit exhibits a Seebeck coefficient of 1.233 μV/K, a temperature resolution of 0.5 K, and favorable linearity and output stability. Moreover, the thermoelectric output remains nearly unchanged under varying pressure conditions, while the pressure response is maintained over different temperature environments, demonstrating favorable self-decoupling capability with negligible signal crosstalk. The proposed design strategy provides a simple and reliable approach for constructing multifunctional flexible sensors and shows promising potential for battery temperature monitoring, wearable healthcare, human–machine interaction, and intelligent electronic skin.

Using xanthan gum and PEDOT:PSS to costabilize Ga droplets to synergistically improve the toughness and sensing performance of polyacrylamide hydrogels

Lu Qishu,Liu Wenxia,Liu Xiaona,Yu Dehai,Song Zhaoping,Wang Huili,Li Guodong,Ge Shaohua

Conductive hydrogels have attracted tremendous attention in fabricating flexible strain sensors as highly stretchable and biocompatible strain sensing materials. However, fabricating a multifunctional conductive hydrogel simultaneously with high toughness and high sensing performance for monitoring subtle strain is still a great challenge. Herein, we developed a new conductive hydrogel by using poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) and xanthan gum (XG) costabilized soft Ga droplets as conductive materials and using the in situ synthesized and chemically crosslinked polyacrylamide (PAM) as the hydrogel matrix. The PEDOT:PSS simultaneously constitutes a rigid conductive network with Ga droplets, and XG constitutes a rigid sacrificial network. The Ga droplets simultaneously promote the in situ free radical synthesis and crosslinking of PAM at room temperature. The as-prepared XG-PEDOT-Ga-PAM hydrogel shows high toughness, good moldability and adhesiveness. XG-PEDOT-Ga-PAM hydrogel-based strain sensor shows a very high sensitivity (gauge factor = 12.6 in the strain range of 175%–300%), short response/recovery time (250 ms), low detection limit (<0.1%) and excellent durability (>500 cycles). The excellent sensing performance of the hydrogel-based strain sensor enabled it to be highly competent in accurately monitoring various human activities from subtle radial pulses to large-scale human joint bending.

Tao Cheng,Xuan-Li Yang,Sheng Yang,Lang Li,Zhong-Ting Liu,Jie Qu,Chao-Fu Meng,Xiang-Chun Li,Yi-Zhou Zhang,Wen-Yong Lai

Flexible transparent supercapacitors (FTSs) have aroused considerable attention. Nonetheless, balancing energy storage capability and transparency remains challenging. Herein, a new type of FTSs with both excellent energy storage and superior transparency is developed based on PEDOT:PSS/MXene/Ag grid ternary hybrid electrodes. The hybrid electrodes can synergistically utilize the high optoelectronic properties of Ag grids, the excellent capacitive performance of MXenes, and the superior chemical stability of PEDOT:PSS, thus, simultaneously demonstrating excellent optoelectronic properties ( T : ≈89%, R s : ≈39 Ω sq −1 ), high areal specific capacitance, superior mechanical softness, and excellent anti-oxidation capability. Due to the excellent comprehensive performances of the hybrid electrodes, the resulting FTSs exhibit both high optical transparency (≈71% and ≈60%) and large areal specific capacitance (≈3.7 and ≈12 mF cm −2 ) besides superior energy storage capacity ( P : 200.93, E : 0.24 µWh cm −2 ). Notably, the FTSs show not only excellent energy storage but also exceptional sensing capability, viable for human activity recognition. This is the first time to achieve FTSs that combine high transparency, excellent energy storage and good sensing all-in-one, which make them stand out from conventional flexible supercapacitors and promising for next-generation smart flexible energy storage devices.

PtNPt/MWCNT-PEDOT:PSS-Modified Microelectrode Arrays for the Synchronous Dopamine and Neural Spike Detection in Rat Models of Sleep Deprivation

Zeying Lu,Shengwei Xu,Hao Wang,Enhui He,Juntao Liu,Yuchuan Dai,Jingyu Xie,Yilin Song,Yun Wang,Yiding Wang,Lina Qu,Xinxia Cai

In this study, a biosensor assembly based on microelectrode arrays (MEAs) modified with PtNPt/MWCNT-PEDOT:PSS nanocomposites is presented to synchronously detect the dopamine (DA) and electrophysiological activities in rat brains. Different morphological and electrochemical characterizations were conducted to show the excellent mechanical and electrical properties of the as-prepared probes. The developed biosensors realized the sensitive and selective detection of DA with the existence of significant interferences such as uric acid (UA), ascorbic acid (AA), glutamate (Glu), and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC). Calibration curve for the DA response was linear with the concentration from 0.05 μM to 79 μM (R = 0.999), with a sensitivity of 30.561 pA/μM and detection limit as low as 50 nM. Finally, the proposed microelectrode was applied to be implanted into the cortex and caudate putamen (CPU) of rats, which was demonstrated to stably measure the synchronous neurochemical and neurophysiological changes caused by 72 h sleep deprivation. The in vivo measuring results showed that the sleep deprivation increased the DA release and neural spike activity in both cortex and CPU. The local field potential (LFP) power in the delta and theta band was significantly increased as well. These changes in brain may reflect the brain’s adaptive reaction toward the side effects induced by sleep deprivation and may partially explain the mechanism of forced wakefulness in the presence of accumulated sleep pressure.

Multiple core-shelled sulfur composite based on spherical double-layered hollow carbon and PEDOT:PSS as cathode for lithium–sulfur batteries

Yilun Ren,Jinlong Hu,Haoxiang Zhong,Lingzhi Zhang

Nanostructured sulfur cathode with a multiple core-shelled structure, featured with the spherical double-layered hollow carbon/sulfur composite (DLHC/S) coated with a conductive layer of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), is designed and synthesized for lithium-sulfur batteries. Transmission electron microscope images of DLHC/S single nanoparticle show that the sulfur aggregates predominantly in the interior space between the two carbon shells by using a vacuum infiltration process. The electric conductivity of DLHC/S@PEDOT:PSS increases over 5 times as comparing to DLHC/S without PEDOT:PSS coating. The composite cathode exhibits a high reversible capacity of 1089 mAh g −1  at 0.2C and superior rate capacity of 510 mAh g −1 even at 4 C, and also remarkable cycling stability with a capacity decay of 0.097% per cycle after 500 cycles at 1 C. The excellent electrochemical performances for DLHC/S@PEDOT:PSS cathode are primarily attributed to the engineering of the unique multiple core-shell structure of DLHC/S@PEDOT:PSS, which inhibits the sulfur dissolution into the electrolyte and the polysulfide shuttle effect, together with the conductivity enhancement due to PEDOT:PSS coating.

Ternary thermoelectric composites of polypyrrole/PEDOT:PSS/carbon nanotube with unique layered structure prepared by one-dimensional polymer nanostructure as template

Lirong Liang,Jueshuo Fan,Miaomiao Wang,Guangming Chen,Guoxing Sun

Recently, organic polymer-based thermoelectric (TE) hybrids or composites have received significant attention. Here, a unique layered morphology of polypyrrole/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate)/single-walled carbon nanotube (PPy/PEDOT:PSS/SWCNT) ternary TE composites are designed using 1D nanostruture of PPy as template. The nanowires of PPy/PEDOT:PSS binary composites are obtained via coating PEDOT:PSS on the surfaces of 1D PPy nanowires. Interestingly, the PPy/PEDOT:PSS/SWCNT ternary composites reveal unexpected layered morphology and dramatically-enhanced TE function with an optimal power factor of 45.3 ± 1.4 μW m −1  K −2 at room temperature. This study will enrich the structure design and preparation strategy of novel TE composites by judicious combing 1D polymer nanostructure with 3D layered networks of composites.

Caffeic-Acid-Functionalized MWCNTs and PEDOT:PSS Formed Composite Flexible Films with “Reinforced Concrete” Structure for Electrical Heating and EMI Shielding

Xuan-Chen Liu,Lu-Yao Tian,Ze-Long Bao,Yi-Song Zhang,Peng-Fei Qian,Wen-Hao Geng,Di Zhang,Qingxia Zhu,Hong-Zhang Geng

Nowadays, flexible multifunctional composites are attracting much attention and are practically being used in various emerging electronic devices. However, most composites suffer from the disadvantages of high loadings of conductive fillers, complicated preparation processes, and low energy conversion efficiency. In this article, Caffeic acid-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (C-MWCNTs)/poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonic acid (PEDOT:PSS)/polyimide (PI) composite films (CPFs) were prepared using a simple layer-by-layer deposition method. The “reinforced concrete” structure of the C-MWCNTs/PEDOT:PSS layer ensures high electrical conductivity of the film, while the PI layer provides excellent mechanical properties (72.69 MPa). The composite film exhibits excellent electrothermal response and thermal stability up to approximately 125 °C at 5 V. In addition, the good conductivity of the film provides its electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (32.69 dB). With these advantages, we expect that flexible CPFs will be widely utilized in wearable devices, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding applications, and thermal management of personal or electronic devices.

Preparation of black phosphorus-PEDOT:PSS hybrid semiconductor composites with good film-forming properties and environmental stability in water containing oxygen

Jie Zhang,Wanchuan Ding,Zhouxiang Zhang,Jingkun Xu,Yangping Wen

The environmental instability of black phosphorus (BP) is one of the difficult issues nowadays that need to be addressed urgently due to its serious degradation, damage in structure and deterioration in properties after exposure to ambient conditions, which severely limits the practical application of BP and its devices under humidity circumstances containing oxygen, particularly watery environments containing oxygen. In this study, PEDOT:PSS with high electrical conductivity, good film-forming ability, excellent environmental stability, and satisfactory solution processability was introduced to improve the environmental instability of BP with unusual structure and extraordinary properties. The mixed dispersions of BP-PEDOT:PSS with different weight ratios were successfully prepared by sonication-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation in isopropanol containing PEDOT:PSS particles under an anhydrous and oxygen-free nitrogen atmosphere. The hybrid semiconductor films of BP-PEDOT:PSS were obtained by drying corresponding BP-PEDOT:PSS mixed dispersions under vacuum; these films were then exposed to ambient air for days before their morphology, structure, and other properties were characterized. The BP-PEDOT:PSS film electrodes were prepared by drop-coating corresponding isopropanol dispersions of BP-PEDOT:PSS, and their environmental stabilities were investigated by electrochemistry in different water systems containing oxygen. The introduction of PEDOT:PSS not only enhanced film-forming ability and electrical conductivity of BP composite films, but also improved their environmental stability in water containing oxygen, which will afford a new opportunity for their application in electronics and optoelectronics of inorganic/organic polymer hybrid semiconductors based on graphene-like materials/conducting polymers under moist air conditions, particularly the electrochemical application in sensors, capacitors, and batteries/cells of BP-PEDOT:PSS composites and their devices in watery environments containing oxygen.
