As a potent oxidizing agent, hypochlorite is pervasive across various terminal disinfection processes, including water treatment, household blenching and medical sterilization. Thus, the specific visualization identification of hypochlorite in real water samples is crucial for assessing water quality safety and pollutant toxicity. Herein, a novel turn-on colorimetric/fluorescent dual-signal probe AMXM based on 6‑methoxy-2,3-dihydro-1 H -xanthene-4-carboxaldehyde scaffold has been successfully designed and synthesized for highly selective and sensitive detection of ClO − in real water sample. Upon the addition of hypochlorite, the solution's color visibly changes from red to yellow to the naked eye, and a strong yellowish green fluorescence is observed under UV light at 365 nm. AMXM demonstrates an excellent linear response (R 2 = 0.9922), with a low detection limit of 56.2 nM, and is unaffected by other potential interfering substances. The mechanism of AMXM ’s response to hypochlorite ions was confirmed through 1 H NMR spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, AMXM was successfully applied to paper test strips and used for the quantitative determination of hypochlorite ions in four real water samples.

The concept of incorporating cross-linkable precursor as the copolymerizing monomer has been proved efficient for polyesters to achieve low flammability and anti-dripping property. Adapting this concept, in our latest paper, a new co-monomer named 5-(2,5-dioxo-3-phenyl-2,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrol-1-yl) isophthalic acid (DPDPI) was synthesized and incorporated into PET chain. Results from limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 and the cone calorimetric test demonstrated that these PET-co-DPDPI copolyesters possess excellent flame retardance and anti-dripping performance. UL-94 V-0 rating could be achieved with a DPDPI content of as low as 10 mol% (PET-co-DPDPI10). Results from thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) and dynamic oscillatory rheology proved the existence of the cross-linking behaviour during heat. The cross-linked polymer structures were stable at high temperature and could promote the char formation during burning. According to the results of Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) and pyrolysis/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py/GC-MS), the cross-linking and flame-retardant mechanism were proposed for PET-co-DPDPIX, that during combustion, 2π + π cycloaddition which occurred between the phenylmaleimide groups as the cross-linking reaction. Afterward, the cross-linked networks promoted aromatization and carbonization, which resulted in self-extinguishing and anti-dripping.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics pose significant environmental and human health risks due to their resistance to degradation and accumulation in ecosystems. In this study, we engineered Stenotrophomonas pavanii JWG-G1, a robust biofilm-forming bacterium, to overexpress the PET hydrolase (DuraPETase) for PET microplastics degradation at ambient temperature. Nine endogenous PET hydrolases were identified through genome sequencing of S. pavanii , and were successfully expressed in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3). Among them, hydrolase Est_B achieved 100% degradation of bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) at an initial concentration of 0.23 mg/mL at 30 °C within 4 h, identifying it as a novel BHETase. However, the PET degradation performance of all endogenous PET hydrolases was inferior to that of DuraPETase. The engineered strain overexpressing DuraPETase demonstrated a significant enhancement in PET degradation, achieving a 38.04 μM total product release of high-crystallinity PET microplastics after 30 days at 30 °C. The degradation extent was greater than that of low biofilm-forming engineered strains, attributing to the aggregation of DuraPETase on the PET surface in the presence of biofilm. Additionally, this engineered strain also maintained PET degradation activity across various water environments and demonstrated effectiveness in degrading other polyester plastics. This is the first report demonstrating that an engineered strain of Stenotrophomonas species is capable of simultaneously secreting exogenous hydrolase and degrading polyester microplastics, representing a novel approach in the development of engineered bacteria with potential applications in bioreactor systems and environmental remediation.

2D transition metal carbides/nitrides/carbonitrides (MXenes) have received extensive attention in solar seawater desalination due to their hydrophilicity, 100 % photothermal conversion efficiency, and efficient light-trapping by enhancing localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Nevertheless, the easily oxidizable characteristics of MXenes, along with salt accumulation and structural weakness impede their practical application in solar-driven interfacial evaporators. Herein, a hydrophobic MXene@oleylamine/polyethylene terephthalate (MXene@OAm/PET) nonwoven with long-term operational stability is fabricated via firmly chemical cross-linking between oleylamine (OAm) modified MXene (MXene@OAm) and NH 2 -PEG-COOH treated PET nonwoven (PEG-PET). The MXene@OAm endows excellent oxidation resistance and hydrophobicity. The prepared MXene@OAm/PET nonwoven which exhibits broad-spectrum solar absorption and high efficiency, can achieve an average evaporation rate in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution at 1.26 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and no seeable salt deposition during 15 irradiation cycles for 8 h a day indicates its superior salt resistance and long-term stability. Most importantly, after being soaked in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 40 days, the evaporation rate of MXene@OAm/PET nonwoven still remains stable at around 1.22 kg·m −2 ·h −1 , indicating the significant potential of this prepared nonwoven for long-term seawater desalination and its suitability for industrial applications. Even in industrial wastewater, the evaporation rate can reach 1.27 kg·m −2 ·h −1 . This work demonstrates a successful strategy for achieving high efficiency, stability, and superior salt resistance, which can be potentially utilized in seawater desalination and wastewater treatment.

A novel fiber-derived unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) was synthesized through alcoholysis and polycondensation by using PET and hybrid fibers as raw materials. The effects of alcoholysis conditions including alcoholysis time, temperature, initiator concentration, type of alcoholysis agents and amount of hybrid fibers on the alcoholysis behavior were investigated by HPLC, LC–MS and GPC. A comprehensive analysis of the fiber-derived UPR was conducted under different reaction conditions and discussed by FTIR, viscosity, acid value and mechanical properties. HPLC results indicated a strong correlation between the maximal peak area in spectrometry and the yield of main glycol products. It was established that the alcoholysis of PET with hybrid fiber samples mainly obtain alcoholysis monomers and dimers by using glycol as an alcoholysis agent. It was discovered that less alcoholysis products was obtained with lower diethylene glycol. The molecular weight of glycolyzed products are oligomers based on a alcoholysis reaction time reached above 3 h. Under the optimal conditions, PET: EG: zinc acetate = 1.0: 2.0: 0.3 (wt%), 200 ℃, 3 h, PET/PU was completely alcoholyzed and produced oligomers. The performance of liquid UPR and its cured product have been investigated. The UPR prepared by PET/PU was utilized as a fiber source unsaturated resin, meeting the standards for organic artificial stone. This article highlighted the potential usage of PET with hybrid fibers in unsaturated resin.

Recycled waste plastics and their derivatives serve as crucial alternatives to traditional petroleum-based materials, offering a sustainable strategy for mitigating environmental pollution. In this work, we prepared waterborne polyurethane (WPU) with enhanced transparency, heat resistance, and mechanical properties by using the depolymerisation products (GOPs) as a chain extender from waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles. Additionally, we incorporate dihydroxyethyl disulfide (HEDS) with GOPs co-chain extender imparts significant self-healing capabilities, with strain and tensile strength healing rates of up to 82.57% and 93.72%, respectively. Furthermore, a composite membrane featuring a polypyrrole (PPy) core was further fabricated for flexible strain sensors, which demonstrated excellent dynamic responsiveness, signal stability, and electrical monitoring performance. These findings underscore the promising potential of upcycled waste plastics in the development of advanced materials for flexible electronics and packaging applications.

Plastics are generally nonrecyclable materials relative to their circular production. Recycling may reduce greenhouse gases and promote decarbonization goal of plastics, while restricted due to strong incompatibility for binary or ternary polymers waste. Sustainability of sole type is frequently idealized with life cycle assessment (LCA) studies and often neglect the release of wear particulate matter or microplastics (MPs) and fail to provide alternate end-of-life (EoL) recycling solutions. Thus, this study offers recycling of binary polymer product, polyethylene terephthalate/styrene-butadiene rubber (PET/SBR) carpet and sustainability assessment through LCA with quantification of MPs accumulation. A functional unit for PET/SBR carpet in 3.5 kg weight with use phase cleaning (vacuum and detergent cleaning) for 10 years' service life was considered to simulate realistic deposition of MPs. Recycling of binary polymer carpet is utilized in high-performance rubber microfibrillar composites (MFCs), using maleic anhydride (MA) or ionic liquid (IL) compatibilizer , as a potential EoL alternative. The LCA results indicate that the use phase is the highest contributor to the environmental impacts, considering the carpet being detergent washed. Smaller MPs accumulated more in the carpet when vacuum cleaned, attracting other MPs presumably particles being statically charged. Addition of IL in recycling of binary polymer carpet not only improves the curing kinetics of MFCs but also enhances the dielectric and rheological viscoelastic behaviors compared to the conventional MA compatibilizer.

Nowadays, effluent treatment is a severe challenge mainly because of its complex composition, which includes oil, heavy metal ions, and dyes. Developing new intelligent membranes is one of the strategies to tackle these significant challenges in wastewater treatment . In this study, we fabricated asymmetric polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PET) membranes by grafting cross-linked poly (itaconic anhydride) (CL-PITA) nanoparticles onto the irradiated face. These nanoparticles were then functionalized with polyethyleneimine (PEI) and protonated with HCl to introduce numerous active electropositive amine groups. The fundamental purpose was to increase surface roughness, introduce numerous hydrophilic groups, and modify it to create a multi-functional PET membrane to separate complex environments. The promising results demonstrated that the protonated PET- g -ITA/DVB (10) -cat membrane exhibited excellent separation efficiencies (SE) for water/light oil, water/heavy oil and oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion. Compared to PET- g -ITA/DVB (0) -cat, it showed superior performance in SE for O/W emulsion and flux decay for water/light oil after 10 cycles. More interestingly, owing to numerous positively charged active amino groups and negativley charged carboxylate groups, the intelligent membrane exhibited a high removal rate of ca. 90 % for anionic dye (congo red) and heavy metals (Cu 2+ and Co 2+ ), showing great potential in complex water treatment environments.

Mimicked by the structure of dimethyl sulfoxide propionate (DMSP), a novel zwitterion monomer of N-methylacryloyl S-methyl l-cysteine methyl sulfonium salt (NMASMCMS) was synthesized and characterized for the first time through three steps using l-cysteine as a starting material. Poly(NMASMCMS) brushes were constructed on PET sheets via surface-initiated reversible addition–fragmentation chain-transfer (SI-RAFT) polymerization. The physical and chemical structures were characterized by water contact angle (WCA), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The polymer brush grafted sheets (PET-B) had good hydrophilicity and high lubricity. Moreover, PET-B sheets exhibited excellent antifouling and hemocompatible properties with low protein adsorption, bacterial adhesion, platelet adhesion, and hemolysis.

The CoMnS-PDA (polydopamine) composite electrodes with high optical transparency and flexibility were fabricated on ITO/PET substrates via an electrochemical deposition method. The unique structural attributes, tunable electronic properties, and rich redox states inherent to bimetallic sulfides, combined with the catechol and nitrogen functional groups present in PDA, collectively enhance the surface modification effectiveness and pseudocapacitive performance of the electrodes. The CoMnS-PDA electrodes exhibit excellent pseudocapacitive performance, with a maximum areal capacitance of 189.3 mF cm−2 at a current density of 0.4 mA cm−2, while maintaining optical transmittance of around 80%. The assembled symmetric device exhibits 50% transparency and delivers an area capacitance of 28.7 mF cm−2 at a current density of 0.2 mA cm−2. Moreover, the device demonstrates outstanding flexibility, with negligible electrochemical performance degradation even under nearly 180° bending. When three devices are connected in series, they successfully light up a red LED, indicating the promising potential of these materials for flexible and transparent energy storage applications.

The growing demand for intelligent wearable devices has put forward new challenges for flexible and high-performance microwave-absorbing materials. Traditional powder-based electromagnetic wave absorbing materials are restricted by their rigidity and bulkiness, making them unsuitable for intelligent, flexible wearable devices. Herein, flexible ZnO/rGO@PET composite fabrics were successfully fabricated by choosing polyester knitted fabric as an elastic scaffold and then adhering ZnO/rGO through impregnation and hydrothermal treatment process. The morphology of ZnO presents needle, flake, and coralline-clustered structures, which are regulated by controlling the growth rate of ZnO seeds along the c-axis in a strong polar ion environment. Among them, the flake-like ZnO synthesized in a 0.050 mol/L growth solution exhibits a looser porous structure, which would significantly enhance impedance matching and multiple internal reflections. Furthermore, flake-like ZnO has a higher electric dipole moment, which can provide stronger dipole polarization and interface polarization. Notably, the ZnO/rGO@PET composite fabric with flake-like ZnO achieves the optimal minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of -70.76 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.20 GHz (8.2–12.4 GHz). Furthermore, adjusting the stacking sequence of functional fabric layers could effectively control the electromagnetic parameters and corresponding microwave absorption performance, which is well maintained after repeated washings. This work provides a novel strategy for designing next-generation tunable electromagnetic textiles.

We report a novel method of three-component spray-spin-spray coating to prepare uniform and dense Ag/graphene nanosheet (Ag/GNS) composite films on a surface modified polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. Compared with an untreated sample, the adhesion between composite films and the substrate was significantly enhanced due to the effects of chemical etching and molecular grafting. From the results of the four-probe test, the sheet resistance of hybrid films of Ag/GNS-5 reduced by 60% compared to the pristine Ag films, which was due to the efficient deposition of GNS by spray-spin-spray coating method. Meanwhile, a variety of complex flexible patterns were successfully fabricated with the help of the masking method. This means that the method could provide an efficient and low cost way for flexible electronics production of various complex flexible metallic coatings in practice.
