Mechanistically Guided Design of Magnetic CuFeS2/ZIF-67 for Efficient PMS Activation via Radical and Non-Radical Pathways Toward Ultra-Fast Dye Degradation

Md Ibrahim Khalil,Camara Sidiki,Mainul Morshed,Huang Liang,Xinxin Zhang,Hongchao Ma

A well-structured magnetic CuFeS 2 /ZIF-67 hybrid catalyst was synthesized by embedding CuFeS 2 nanoparticles into a ZIF-67 framework for efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and ultrafast dye degradation. The redox-rich Cu─Fe─Co interface promotes rapid electron transfer and continuous PMS activation, resulting in outstanding catalytic performance. Under optimized conditions (catalyst 75 mg L − 1 , PMS 125 mg L − 1 , dye 80 mg L − 1 , pH 6.4, and 20°C), the optimized 0.4-CuFeS 2 /ZIF-67 composite achieved 98.06% removal of Reactive Brilliant Blue KN-R (anthraquinone-based anionic reactive dye) within 0.5 min, following pseudo-first-order kinetics with a high rate constant (k obs = 7.49 min − 1 ). Electron paramagnetic resonance and quenching experiments confirmed the coexistence of radical species (SO 4 • − , •OH, and O 2 • − ) and a non-radical pathway involving 1 O 2 , with singlet oxygen identified as the dominant oxidant. The enhanced activity originates from the synergistic Cu + /Cu 2 + , Fe 2 + /Fe 3 + , and Co 2 + /Co 3 + redox cycling, while sulfur species (S 2 − /S 2 2 − ) act as electron mediators that promote charge transfer and stabilize active sites during PMS activation. The catalyst retained over 83% activity after repeated cycles with negligible metal leaching (Cu 0.010 mg L − 1 , Fe 0.033 mg L − 1 , Co 0.09 mg L − 1 ). Significant total organic carbon removal (52.81%) demonstrates effective mineralization, highlighting its potential for sustainable wastewater treatment applications. Graphical A magnetic CuFeS 2 /ZIF-67 hybrid catalyst enables ultrafast peroxymonosulfate activation through synergistic Cu─Fe─Co interfacial redox cycling and rapid electron transfer. Dominant singlet oxygen and radical pathways achieve rapid dye degradation, substantial mineralization, excellent recyclability, and low metal leaching, demonstrating strong potential for sustainable wastewater remediation under mild operating conditions.

Catalytic degradation of polyethylene terephthalate microplastics by Co-N/C@CeO2 composite in thermal-assisted activation PMS system: Process mechanism and toxicological analysis

Huijie Wang,Hongzhao Chen,Qingqiao Wan,Yuzhao Zheng,Yang Wan,Xin Liu,Xianghai Song,Wei Ma,Pengwei Huo

In this work, a Co-N/C@CeO 2 composite material was successfully synthesized via hydrothermal, in-situ growth, calcination methods and applied in a thermal-assisted activation peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system for efficient degradation of polyethylene terephthalate microplastics (PET MPs). The effects of various parameters, including catalysts, reaction temperature, H 2 O 2 , PMS dosages and catalyst loading, on the degradation efficiency of PET MPs were systematically investigated. Characterization techniques, including mass spectral (MS) analysis, in-situ Fourier transform infrared (in-situ FT-IR) and electron paramagnetic resonance (ESR), revealed that PET MPs adsorbed on the surface were rapidly degraded under the action of hydroxyl radical (•OH) and sulfate radical (SO 4 •− ). In the presence of a small amount of H 2 O 2 and the synergistic effect, the Co-N/C@CeO 2 composite material successfully achieved a 92.3% degradation rate of PET MPs in the thermal-assisted activation PMS system. DFT calculations indicated that the Co-N/C@CeO 2 composite material exhibited relatively lower adsorption energy and higher activation capacity for HSO 5 − molecules. In addition, toxicity assessment results showed that the degradation intermediates had generally lower toxicity. This study not only provides valuable insights for the construction of high-activity Co-N/C and CeO 2 composite materials but offers technical and theoretical guidance for the effective degradation of PET MPs in the environment.

Boron nitride quantum dots supported hollow NH2-MIL-125 drive photo-Fenton-PMS system for photocatalytic tetracycline degradation: Contribution of tannic acid etching

Jun Guo,Jun Hou,Zijun Yang,Jun Xia,Jun Wu,Guoxiang You,Lingzhan Miao

NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) materials had great potential for photocatalytic applications but had low activity due to exciton effect and narrow absorption range of visible light. The surface oxygen-containing negative functional groups of boron nitride quantum dots (BNQDs) could overcome these defects, but due to the low load capacity, a higher specific surface area of the substrate was usually required. In this paper, a hollow Ti-MOF material was developed by etching technology. The hollow structure formed by tannic acid etching broadened the absorption range of visable light and provided more alternative surfaces for loading BNQDs. The 85.2% of high tetracycline (TC) removal efficiency for the best sample (BNQDs-5@20-Ti-MOF + PMS) was obtained, which was about 56.8 and 1.9 times of the 20-Ti-MOF and BNQDs-5@20-Ti-MOF, respectively. BNQDs-5@20-Ti-MOF + PMS system showed a great TC degradation efficiency in a wide pH range (pH = 5–9). In addition, reaction temperature and the inorganic ions did not show significant inhibition effect for TC removal. Both free radical and non-free radical pathways were involved in the TC degration by BNQDs-5@20-Ti-MOF + PMS system, among which O 2 •− and 1 O 2 played the key roles. Interestingly, multiple 1 O 2 production paths contributed to the high efficiency and stability of BNQDs-5@20-Ti-MOF + PMS system. This study revealed a reasonable combination of Ti-MOF and BNQDs, which provided a new efficient photocatalyst for environmental remediation.

Cobalt oxide composite g-C3N4 for visible light-activated PMS degradation of PAHs: The combined effects of free radicals and non-free radicals

Mingyong Wang,Taiguang Li,Guanxiang Ma,Kai Xuan,Yongmei Hao

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs), as a kind of persistent organic pollutant, pose serious threat to humans and organisms’ health. In this work, cobalt oxide/g-C₃N₄ composites with low cobalt content (≤0.5 wt%) were prepared via a high-temperature solid-phase method for visible-light-driven catalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), as an efficient system, to degrade PAHs in water. It is noteworthy that this work systematically studied the properties of the prepared materials and the mechanism of active species generation for pollutant degradation. The material forms a p-n heterojunction structure and exhibits visible light absorption. Under conditions where both the catalyst and PMS concentrations are 100 mg/L, near-complete degradation of 0.2 mg/L phenanthrene(PHE) can be achieved within 35 min. Mechanistic studies revealed that the mainly combined contribution of active species are 1 O 2 and O •— 2 , indicating that the degradation process involves both radical and non-radical pathways. After 5 cycles, the material retained 80% degradation efficiency while maintaining structural stability and minimal cobalt leaching, providing a feasible approach for developing stable and efficient heterogeneous photocatalysis-PMS systems. One-step hydrothermal synthesis of Zn/Co MOF for efficiently activating PMS to degrade organic pollutants in water: The reaction kinetics and mechanism

Ming Zhang,Jiacheng Li,Lijun Wu,Tian Liang,Jian Liu,Lu Wang

Acetamiprid (ACE) can accumulate in the environment through the food chain, potentially endanger human health. In this experiment, zinc‑cobalt bimetallic metal organic framework (Zn/Co MOF) was synthesized and used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal of ACE from water. The degradation efficiency of ACE could achieve approximately 96.93% after 90 min. Through the synergistic effect of Zn and Co bimetallic sites, ACE was degraded via a Fenton-like reaction, while reactive oxygen species (SO 4 ·- , ·OH, O 2 ·- , and 1 O 2 ) participated in the process. The high catalytic activity of Zn/Co MOF led to the degradation of ACE through the formation of a series of low-toxicity intermediates, and partial mineralization to CO 2 and H 2 O. In addition, Zn/Co MOF remained effective under broad pH conditions (pH 5–11) and temperatures (5–45 °C). This system had excellent degradation effects in actual water, with degradation rates of 95.42% and 95.18% after 90 min in the Pai River and Liren Lake, respectively. With its high catalytic performance, the Zn/Co MOF is expected to become an ideal catalyst that could be used to remove pesticide residues in water.

Key role of La in La@nZVI/rGO for the efficient and steady PMS activation towards ofloxacin degradation via a non-radical process

Zhiyan Liu,Na Tian,Zhongyu Zhang,Nengneng Li,Yulun Nie,Xike Tian,Chu Dai

The nano zero-valent iron (nZVI)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are promising for removal of antibiotic contaminants in groundwater. However, the inherent defects of rapid passivation and inactivation limit the efficient and steady application of nZVI. Herein, the lanthanum@nZVI/rGO (La@nZVI/rGO) was synthesized in which nZVI was coated with La and distributed evenly on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) matrix. The introduction of La coating protected the nZVI from direct contact with PMS molecules thus the La@nZVI/rGO appeared efficient and steady activization of PMS to degrade ofloxacin (OFX) without rapid inactivation. The removal rate was promoted to 96.5 % compared with the uncoated nZVI/rGO (only 85.2 %). The degradation reaction represented steady and continuous activation of PMS with pseudo-first-order kinetics (0.0451 min −1 ). While the two-stage kinetics of nZVI/rGO/PMS with initial 0.2581 min −1 and instant 0.0024 min −1 resulted from the rapid inactivation of nZVI. The reaction of La@nZVI/rGO/PMS exhibited minimal leaching of Fe ions (less than 1.8 µg/L) while it reached 6.4 mg/L in nZVI/rGO/PMS. XRD and XPS analyses further demonstrated the excellent durability of La@nZVI/rGO and the obvious passivation of nZVI/rGO. ESR and quenching tests confirmed that La coating regulated the PMS activation and ROS generation mechanism. The degradation was dominated by 1 O 2 -induced non-free radical process in La@nZVI/rGO/PMS system and different from radical oxidation in nZVI/rGO/PMS. Moreover, the dissolved oxygen and XPS analysis revealed the important role of La coating and oxygen vacancy in the catalytic degradation. This work could provide a novel understanding of the nZVI with protective coating in AOPs environmental remediation.

Copper sulphide/cuprous sulphide doped zero-valent iron@carbon (ZVI@C/CuS/Cu2S) activate PMS for rapid and effective decomposition of Ni-EDTA

Wenyan Wang,Yunlan Xu,Dengjie Zhong

Ni-EDTA is widely present in electroplating effluents. It cannot be effectively removed by traditional wastewater treatment methods due to its chemical stability. In this study, copper sulphide/cuprous sulphide doped zero-valent iron@carbon (ZVI@C/CuS/Cu2S) was prepared to active peroxymonsulphate (PMS) to decomposition Ni-EDTA. The ZVI@C/CuS/Cu2S + PMS process shows excellent performance under neutral or even alkaline conditions. This is due to the acceleration of ZVI electron transport by CuS/Cu2S, the autocatalysis of CuS/Cu2S itself, and the synergistic effect of CuS/Cu2S and Ni-EDTA. The removal efficiency of 50 ppm Ni-EDTA electroplating effluents reached 99.53% at 10 min, and the discharge water can meet the Chinese emission standard. The influences of the main parameters such as initial pH value, catalyst, PMS and initial Ni-EDTA concentration on removal efficiency was systematically investigated.

Highly efficient in-situ purification of Fe(II)-rich high-arsenic groundwater under anoxic conditions: Promotion mechanisms of PMS on oxidation and adsorption

Ying Fang,Qianwen Liu,Yang Song,Hui Cai,Ying Yang,Zhaoguang Yang,Haipu Li

Dissolved Fe(II) widely exists in high-arsenic (high-As) groundwater, whose concentration (12–518 µM) is positively correlated with that of As(III). In order to realize the environmental-friendly and highly efficient in-situ simultaneous oxidation and adsorption of As(III) under anoxic conditions, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was directly dosed into Fe(II)-rich high-As groundwater. Compared with hydrogen peroxide (88.2%) and peroxydisulfate (66.6%), the involvement of PMS gave the best As(III) removal efficiency of 98.8% after 1 min treatment, owing to the dual aspects of the best oxidation of As(III) and the best adsorption of As(V). During As(III) oxidation process, more SO 4 • − and 1 O 2 generated and unactivated PMS in Fe(II)-PMS process were responsible for the most efficient oxidation. During the enhanced As(V) adsorption process, the presence of PMS changed the structure of the in-situ formed Fe(III) colloid to provide more adsorption sites. Besides, the higher PMS concentration caused better As(III) oxidation, As(III) immobilization, and As(V) adsorption efficiencies. A wide range of Fe(II) (125–500 µM) coupled with PMS (244 µM) could immobilize more than 90% of As(III) ( C 0  = 1000 µg/L), and As(III) ranging from 0.2 mg/L to 2.0 mg/L also could be removed over 90% in Fe(II)-PMS process. The coexistence of HCO 3 – , Cl − , and humic acid slightly affected As(III) immobilization. Furthermore, after treatment, residual Fe ions concentration, residual total arsenic concentration, sulfate ions concentration, and pH value met the drinking water standard. This study could provide a very promising and attractive technology for a fast and efficient in-situ purification of Fe(II)-rich high-As groundwater.

The Potential of Spent Coffee Grounds @ MOFs Composite Catalyst in Efficient Activation of PMS to Remove the Tetracycline Hydrochloride from an Aqueous Solution

Wei Zhang,Jiajia Lu,Shoushu Liu,Chen Wang,Qiting Zuo,Lin Gong

The efficient removal of Tetracycline Hydrochloride (TC) from wastewater, which is a difficult process, has attracted increasing attention. Aiming to synchronously achieve the goal of natural waste utilization and PMS activation, we have combined the MOFs material with waste coffee grounds (CG). The catalytic activity of the CG@ZIF-67 composite in the TC removal process was thoroughly evaluated, demonstrating that the TC removal rate could reach 96.3% within 30 min at CG@ZIF-67 composite dosage of 100 mg/L, PMS concertation of 1.0 mM, unadjusted pH 6.2, and contact temperate of 293.15 K. The1O2and ·SO4−in the CG@ZIF-67/PMS/TC system would play the crucial role in the TC degradation process, with1O2acting as the primary ROS. The oxygen-containing functional groups and graphite N on the surface of CG@ZIF-67 composite would play a major role in efficiently activating PMS and correspondingly degrading TC. In addition, the CG@ZIF-67/PMS/TC system could withstand a wide pH range (3–11). The application of CG in preparing MOF-based composites will provide a new method of removing emerging pollutants from an aqueous solution. Keywords:tetracycline hydrochloride;CG@ZIF-67 composite;utilization of natural waste;peroxymonosulfate

Acceleration of levofloxacin degradation by combination of multiple free radicals via MoS2 anchored in manganese ferrite doped perovskite activated PMS under visible light

Yuxuan He,Jin Qian,Peifang Wang,Jie Wu,Bianhe Lu,Sijing Tang,Pan Gao

The nanocomposite of MoS 2 embedded manganese ferrite doped perovskite (SrCoO 3 /MnFe 2 O 4 /MoS 2 , abbreviated as SMM) was successfully synthesized for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation under visible-light. It was optimized that the SMM-3 (mass ratio of MoS 2 modified nanocomposite was 0.3) exhibited excellent catalytic performance to activate PMS for levofloxacin (LVF) degradation, with the degradation efficiency of 95.1% in 20 min. Besides, SMM-3 was able to efficiently degrade LVF under real water matrix. The quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis revealed that SO 4 •- and HO • played a dominant role in reaction. Due to the photocatalytic property of nanocomposites, the visible light could excite electrons to react with oxygen and form O 2 •- , which further reacted with HO • to produce 1 O 2 . In the reaction process, the rapid redox cycle of metal ions (including Co, Mn, Fe and Mo) boosted the activation of PMS and promoted the degradation of LVF in a short time. The Density functional theory (DFT) calculation and LC-MS/MS further revealed that oxidation of piperazine ring, decarboxylation and defluorination processes were the main LVF degradation pathways. Finally, the toxicity analysis based on Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (T.E.S.T) verified the ecological risks of transformation residues.

Activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by Co3O4 quantum dots decorated hierarchical C@Co3O4 for degradation of organic pollutants: Kinetics and radical-nonradical cooperation mechanisms

Jinping Liang,Ling Fu

Persulfate-based advanced oxidation process (PS-AOP) is a promising technology for in-depth wastewater treatment. Here, Co 3 O 4 quantum dots (QDs) decorated hierarchical C@Co 3 O 4 (C@Co 3 O 4 -Q5) was prepared by a facile route. The crystalline structure, micrograph and chemical composition of C@Co 3 O 4 -Q5 were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and XPS. Taking Rhodamine B (RhB) as a model contaminant, the influences of process parameters on the degradation performance were evaluated. Detailed reaction kinetics investigation indicated that, at elevated temperatures higher than 30 °C, RhB degradation rate approximately follows this expression: r = 1.022 × 1 0 7 e x p ( - 47850 / R T ) [ R h B ] [ P M S ] 0.36 , whereas the real energies for catalytic activation ( Eac ) and heat activation ( Eah ) were 16.231 kJ·mol −1 and 31.62 kJ·mol −1 , respectively. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) quenching experiments and EPR tests suggested that not the general held radical SO 4 − but the downstream OH and the nonradical ROS 1 O 2 co-contribute to RhB mineralization. Meanwhile, PMS activation mechanisms referring to OH and 1 O 2 generation were elaborated based on XPS discussion. It was revealed that Co 3 O 4 quantum dots and oxygen functional groups and/or oxygen defects on carbon surface cooperate to generate ROS. Additionally, 5 successive cycles confirmed C@Co 3 O 4 -Q5′s high stability and reusability. These findings provided new insights into carbon-loaded QDs catalysts for PMS-mediated micropollutants removal.

The relation of interface electron transfer and PMS activation by the H-bonding interaction between composite metal and MCM-48 during sulfamethazine ozonation

Shangyi Li,Jun Huang,Xukai Li,Laisheng Li

Co-Ce as the dominant active sites immobilized MCM-48 (Co-Ce/MCM-48) was fabricated via H-bonding by the hydrothermal and incipient wetness co-impregnation method. The incorporation of Co-Ce/MCM-48 (67.2%) provided higher mineralization of sulfamethazine (SMT) than Co/MCM-48 (62.2%) and Ce/MCM-48 (39.4%) in O 3 /peroxymonosulfate (O 3 /PMS) system at 90 min reaction time. The catalytic efficiency could be further improved owing to enhanced PMS decomposition rate when initial pH increased to 9.4. The electron transfer capacity in Co-Ce/MCM-48/O 3 /PMS was improved according to in-situ electrochemical tests. In situ-Raman characterization implied that PMS was bonded to the Co⋯HO-Si-O-Si-OH⋯Ce to generate the Ce-OH⋯HSO 5 − and Co-OH⋯HSO 5 − complexes, which was decomposed by O 3 and one-electron transfer reaction into reactive oxygen species (ROSs). LC-MS analysis indicated that the breakage of N-S bond, SO 2 extrusion and -CH 3 oxidation on rings were the major degradation pathway during SMT degradation. To uncover the relationship of interface electron transfer with Co-Ce/MCM-48 and PMS activation by O 3 , electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra was recorded to investigate the variation of ROSs in different processes. Simultaneous PMS reduction and oxidation over the solid-liquid-gas interface occurred for the generation of free and non-free radicals in Co-Ce/MCM-48/O 3 /PMS process.
