Preparation and study of attapulgite reinforced PVA fiber with cross-linking of boric acid

Xinqiu Hong,Haifeng Li

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers were manufactured by gel spinning with reinforcing of attapulgite (ATT) and cross-linking of boric acid (PVA/B/ATT fibers), in order to improve the mechanical properties. Furthermore, the final fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) and tensile strength tester. In addition, when ATT amount was no more than 2.0 wt%, FTIR analyses suggested that the degrees of cooperation combining of ATT and boric acid with PVA macromolecules were enhanced. SEM images indicated that PVA/B/ATT fibers had smooth surfaces. DSC, TGA and XRD results illustrated that the melting temperatures and maximum thermal decomposition temperatures first increased and then dropped as the content of ATT increased. Moreover, mechanical properties results indicated that the optimal ATT amount was 2.0 wt%, and the tensile strength of PVA/B/ATT-2 fiber reached the highest of 14.2 ± 0.3 cN/dtex. It was largely because that the cooperation combining of boric acid and ATT with PVA molecules improved the mechanical properties of PVA/B/ATT fibers.

Preparation of CS/PVA/POP Nanofiber Membranes and Adsorption Behavior for Hg(II) Ions

Qunhua Zhou,Yu Sun,Ziye Li,Siqin Sun,Jianshe Hu,Zhangpei Chen,Aikebaier Reheman

Chitosan (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofiber membranes were synthesized via electrospinning and used as supporting materials for powdered porous organic polymer (POP). These membranes were then crosslinked with glutaraldehyde, resulting in nanofiber membranes (CS/PVA/POP) as an efficient adsorbent for Hg(II) ions. Characterization using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy showed that the membranes effectively removed up to 92.9% of mercury ions at optimal conditions, with an adsorption capacity of 116.1 mg/g. The adsorption data fit well with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The efficient uptake of mercury ions was attributed to chemisorption involving active groups (C=S, -NH2, -OH), facilitated by mechanisms such as chelation, complexation, or electron exchange. TheCS/PVA/POPnanofiber membranes demonstrated significant advantages in adsorption capacity, economic viability, and recyclability, providing an effective solution to mercury pollution in water.

Optimization of mass transfer-enhanced chlorine-resistant crosslinked PVA composite membranes for pervaporation desalination

Jiahua Yan,Zhongxiao Du,Zijian Yu,Bing Cao,ThiThi Mar,Dujian Qin,Rui Zhang

Pervaporation (PV) is characterised by good hydrophilicity and antifouling properties. However, it is still unavoidable to need cleaning during long-term operation. Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) is a commonly used purifying agent for organic pollutants , but it may cause damage to the polymer membrane. In this study, a grafting method was proposed to enhance the chlorine resistance and water permeability of membrane composite polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) pervaporation membrane. Modified PVA (SPVA) was prepared by grafting 5-sulfosalicylic acid (SSA) to improve the hydrophilicity of the membrane using the sulfonic acid group on SSA. SPVA-FA/PTFE composite membranes were prepared by using perfluoroglutaric acid (PFGA) as crosslinking agent to improve the chlorine resistance of the membranes by utilising the C-F chain contained therein. The water flux was 120.38 ± 1.72 kg/(m 2 ·h), which was 84.2 % higher than that before grafting, when tested at 70 °C and 3.5 wt% NaCl. The chlorine resistance of SPVA-PFGA/PTFE composite membrane was tested in 2000 ppm (pH = 12) NaClO solution for 480 h, and the salt rejection remained above 99.93 %. When desalinating 20 wt% NaCl at 70 °C, the water flux of SPVA-PFGA/PTFE membrane is 51.95 ± 0.6 kg/(m 2 ·h), which has the potential to treat high concentration brine.

Necklace-Structured PVA Sponges for Fast Bleeding Control in the Punctured Femoral Artery Hemorrhage

Weihang Wu,Hongjian Huang,Zhicheng Huang,Qinghui Wang,Zongxuan Huang,Hongwen Zhang,Dongsheng Chen,Wen Wang,Hu Zhao,Haiqing Liu,Baodong Zheng,Yu Wang

Uncontrollable hemorrhage from deep, narrow wounds poses a critical threat to life, as locating the bleeding arteries in such areas is challenging. Rapid bleeding control remains a significant challenge in pre-hospital care. Herein, an injectable hemostatic device filled with disc-like PVA sponges is developed for this objective. The pristine PVA sponge is strung as a necklace-structured sponge loaded in a foldable injector. With a novel retraction mechanism, this self-designed injector precisely deploys hemostatic sponges to deep bleeding sites, surpassing the XStat TM injector in design innovation. The PVA sponges' high porosity and unique porous structure allowed it for rapid shape recovery (<30 s) and good compressive strength. In the punctured wound, the swollen PVA sponges exert high compression to close the bleeding artery, resulting in fast-bleeding control. In the pig groin femoral artery injury model, the PVA sponge treatment resulted in a 100% survival rate during a 2-h hemostasis period, compared to a 33.3% survival rate in the cotton gauze control group. In addition, it can be easily taken out by a simple pulling. The easily applicable and removable necklace-structured PVA sponge is a highly promising hemostat for punctured wounds.

PVA/PEGDA microgels loaded with L-cysteine for corrosion inhibition coating on fragile bronze

Hu Hengrui,Huang Xia,Chen Jiachang,Chen Junying

Bronze holds immense artistic, historical, and scientific significance, representing a valuable component of humanity's cultural heritage. Despite its cultural value, bronze is susceptible to corrosion and damage caused by environmental factors. This paper prepared an environmentally friendly poly(vinyl alcohol)/ poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PVA/PEGDA) microgel loaded with L-cysteine (Cys), which effectively protects fragile bronze artifacts. In this study, the color and microstructure of the bronze coatings were characterized using a camera, colorimeter and scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the PVA/PEGDA microgels loaded with Cys (PVA/PEGDA + Cys microgels coating) not only did not change the color and appearance of the bronze, but also adhered and bonded well to the bronze surface. Confocal microscopy confirmed the soft and self-healing properties of the PVA/PEGDA + Cys microgels coating. Electrochemical testing and analysis showed that the PVA/PEGDA + Cys microgels coating exhibited excellent corrosion inhibition performance, with a corrosion inhibition efficiency of as high as 95.66%. The compressive test shows that the PVA/PEGDA + Cys microgels coating has certain reinforcement properties for bronze. The complete removal of PVA/PEGDA + Cys microgels coating can be achieved by spraying ethanol solution, indicating the enormous potential of microgels coating in protecting corroded bronze artifacts in the short term.

Sandwich-structured MXene/PVA/ BaSO4@n-eicosane composite with thermal management and radiation protection

Tianle Liu,Shitian Zhao,Guokun Yang,Mingsheng Chen,Junhui Kou,Weijian Wang,Guosheng Jiang,Shaojun Zheng

Prominent thermal management, electromagnetic interference(EMI) shielding, and anti-ionizing radiation capabilities are essential trends in developing flexible materials. In this study, we developed a novel flexible MXene/polyvinyl alcohol/ microencapsulated phase change material (MPM) phase change composite film with a sandwich structure using an alternating vacuum filtration method. This film demonstrates good toughness, strength, stability, and durability. Incorporating microencapsulated phase change material(MEPCMs) enhances the enthalpy of the films (110.2J/g). Additionally, due to the incorporation of phase change microcapsules with a unique barium sulfate-based (BaSO 4 ) as the wall material, the films not only possess EMI shielding performance(39.7 dB), but also exhibits resistance to ionizing radiation(4.62 cm 2 g −1 ). Notably, the film can convert light and electrical energy into heat and store this heat as latent heat within the MEPCMs, enabling multi-source thermal management capability. The ease of preparation and exceptional performance of MPM make it highly suitable for a wide range of industrial and wearable applications.

Synergistic Optimization Strategies for SA-PVA Hydrogel Nanofiltration Membrane Performance by MWCNTs and TiO2

Liu Peng,Bi Yuanyuan,Gu Yaxin,Li Xiangyu,Mao Junpeng,Shan Xiantong,Cao Ji

In this study, a novel hydrogel nanofiltration (NF) membrane is developed through the coating-crosslinking method by synergistically utilizing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) into the hydrogel coatings of sodium alginate (SA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) on a porous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix membrane. The experimental findings demonstrate that the P-MT@SA-PVA-PVDF hydrogel NF membrane displays outstanding separation performance, hydrophilicity, and antifouling properties. When the ratio of MWCNTs to PVP is kept at 1:4, the pure water flux of the prepared hydrogel NF membrane reaches 226.2 L/(m 2 ˑh). The rejection rates for Coomassie brilliant blue, Congo red, and Methylene blue are 96.3%, 95.8%, and 92.1%, respectively. Moreover, the total fouling rate of the membrane is merely 28.7%, and the flux recovery rate can attain 93.1%. The remarkable hydrophilicity and highly efficient rejection rates for dyes indicate broad application prospects of MWCNTs-modified hydrogel NF membranes in the field of printing and dyeing wastewater treatment.

Sustainable Moisture-Electric Generator Based on Electrospun PVA Membranes with Phytic Acid-Enhanced Proton Conduction

Zhiwei Zhao,Jin Fang,Qingqing Ni,Zhenzhen Xu

Moisture-electric generators (MEGs) can continuously harvest clean electricity from ubiquitous environmental water vapor, making them promising candidates as power sources for next-generation low-power wearable electronics. However, existing MEG devices still face significant challenges in output performance, stability, and environmental adaptability, particularly exhibiting low output voltage and structural instability. To address these challenges, this study presents a high-performance MEG based on poly(vinyl alcohol)/phytic acid (PVA/PA) composite nanofibers. A three-dimensional cross-linked porous hydrophilic network was fabricated via electrospinning, enabling efficient proton dissociation and excellent electrical output performance. Under 97% relative humidity (RH), a single MEG with an effective area of 2 cm2 delivers a sustained open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.81 V and a short-circuit current (ISC) of 3.1 μA, achieving a peak power output of 0.65 μW. Notably, the device demonstrates excellent structural and operational stability, maintaining high-efficiency power generation for over 7 days, and can completely dissolve in water within about 5 h and fully biodegrade under natural conditions within ∼120 h. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the synergistic PVA/PA system exhibits a strong binding affinity toward water molecules, with a binding energy of −1.602 eV, further supporting its efficient moisture uptake and proton dissociation mechanism. Furthermore, the MEG device can be integrated in series or parallel configurations using multiple units to meet diverse voltage and current requirements. It has been successfully applied to capacitor charging and breath monitoring, demonstrating broad potential for use in self-powered wearable electronic systems.

This study utilized natural sorghum straw as raw material, leveraging its material advantages of high cellulose content, low lignin and hemicellulose content, and long-fiber structure. By forming a hydrogen-bonded cross-linked network with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a high-performance piezoresistive sensor was developed to enhance its sensitivity and stability. Experimental results demonstrate that the sensor exhibits a sensitivity of 0.9 kPa − 1 under low-pressure conditions, 0.45 kPa − 1 under medium-pressure conditions, and further increases to 0.85 kPa − 1 under high-pressure conditions. Experimental data confirm the sensor’s long-term stability and sensitivity across the 10–120 kPa pressure range, with a minimum detection limit of 4.9 Pa. After 10,000 cyclic tests, it maintains excellent repeatability under repeated loading conditions, with a response recovery time of 25–50 ms. Furthermore, manufacturing costs were significantly reduced, achieving total cost savings of 96 %. The sensor has been successfully applied in detecting signals such as human motion, electrocardiograms, and sound, as well as in monitoring signals from pressure sensor arrays, demonstrating reliable practical performance. In summary, the piezoresistive sensor utilizing natural sorghum straw cellulose as its core conductive structure provides an efficient, reliable, and low-cost solution for pressure signal detection, promising to advance technological progress in related fields.

PVA-stabilized La(OH)3-Fe2O3 composites with unparalleled cycling stability for sustainable phosphate recovery

Haotian Hao,Yao Zhang,Shuo Xu,Zihao Wang,Yili Wang,Shan Wang,Baoyou Shi

Enriching low-concentration phosphorus in water is prerequisite for phosphorus recovery. In this study, a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-assisted high-temperature stabilization method was developed to synthesize a magnetically recoverable La(OH) 3 -Fe 2 O 3 composite, designated as PMLH, via stable crosslinking. Compared with MLH-1, a conventionally synthesized La(OH) 3 /Fe 2 O 3 composite, PMLH-1 (La/Fe molar ratio = 1:1) exhibited 31.77 % more La(OH) 3 adsorption sites and maintained 2.32 times higher phosphate adsorption capacity after 10 reuse cycles. The optimal synthesis conditions were determined as calcination temperature of 150 °C, PVA dosage of 0.375 %, and La-to-Fe molar ratio of 1.5. Structural characterization revealed that PMLH-1.5 consisted of rod-like La(OH) 3 and irregular γ-Fe 2 O 3 tightly bonded via PVA bridging. The composite demonstrated a maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of 79.51 mg P/g, reaching equilibrium within 16 h at 0.5 g/L dosage. The saturated adsorption remained stable across pH 3–9. While coexisting NO 3 − and humic acid showed negligible effects, Mg 2+ , Cl − , SO 4 2− and HCO 3 − reduced adsorption by 10–20 %, whereas Ca 2+ significantly enhanced phosphate uptake. Notably, PMLH-1.5 exhibited exceptional practical performance, exceeding its theoretical saturation capacity by 20 % with prolonged adsorption in real water matrices. Efficient desorption (4 h) was achieved using 2.5 M NaOH/1.875 M NaCl mixed solution. The PMLH-1.5 demonstrated remarkable stability across 40 consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles using actual water samples, consistently meeting discharge standards for 13–14 full cycles. This performance established a new reference point for cyclic durability assessments in water treatment research. Sequential desorption in the same desorbent progressively concentrated phosphorus from 0 to 26.69 mg/L, enabling effective low-concentration phosphate enrichment. Economic analysis confirmed that PMLH-1.5 exhibits a competitive chemical cost, ranging from 3.28 to 5.26 CNY/mol P (0.46 to 0.74 US $/mol P).

3D-Printed Auricular Scaffold Based on Porous UHMWPE Reinforced with PVA/CS Double-Network Hydrogel

Jianxun Yao,Jifan Zhan,Hanwu Liu,Tingting Yan

Auricular reconstruction remains a significant challenge in tissue engineering due to the auricle’s complex anatomy and functional requirements. To address the limitations of autologous cartilage grafts, we developed a composite scaffold consisting of porous ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) integrated with a polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA/CS) double-network hydrogel reinforced with 2 wt% nano-hydroxyapatite (HA). The scaffold was fabricated via powder sintering and physical crosslinking and exhibited high porosity (>41%), a tensile strength of 2.80 MPa, and enhanced water retention. The addition of HA improved both the mechanical strength and antibacterial properties of the composite. The hydrogel component demonstrated stable swelling behavior, hemolysis rates below 5%, and good cytocompatibility. These findings demonstrate that the UHMWPE/PVA-CS/HA composite scaffold, combining the rigidity of a sintered porous framework with the flexibility and bioactivity of a reinforced hydrogel, offers a novel and promising platform for patient-specific auricular reconstruction with balanced mechanical, biological, and antibacterial properties.

Electrospun chitosan/PVA/bioglass Nanofibrous membrane with spatially designed structure for accelerating chronic wound healing

Qingchang Chen,Jun Wu,Yuan Liu,Yanqun Li,Chuqiu Zhang,Weichen Qi,Kelvin W.K. Yeung,Tak Man Wong,Xiaoli Zhao,Haobo Pan

Cutaneous wounds, especially chronic wounds, remain clinical challenges, and this is partially due to the complex healing process composed of four overlapping but distinct stages including hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation and remodeling. Therefore, wound dressings with spatially designed structures which can temporally regulate certain bioactive components to function at specific healing stages might be able to accelerate the healing process. In this study, nanobioglass incorporated chitosan-PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) trilayer nanofibrous membrane (nBG-TFM) was fabricated via sequential electrospinning. This membrane exhibited excellent biocompatibility, antibacterial activity and regeneration promotion effect. Furthermore, spatially designed structure optimized functions of each component and provided more suitable microenvironment as compared with uniform membrane. Rat full-thickness skin defects model and mice diabetic chronic wound model showed that nBG-TFM could achieve significantly accelerated and enhanced healing, in terms of complete re-epithelialization, improved collagen alignment and formation of skin appendages. It was revealed that nBG-TFM functioned through upregulating growth factors including VEGF and TGF-β. Meanwhile inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1β were downregulated. The technology presented in this study shed new light on designing functional wound dressings which can promote healing of chronic wounds.
