Enhanced Adsorption of Pb(II) by Potassium Permanganate Modified Spent Coffee Grounds: Isotherms, Kinetics, and Optimization via Box-Behnken Design

Xing Yun,Liu Wei,Li Yuqing,Yang Miao,Su Xinyi

The novel adsorbent of KMnO 4 -modified spent coffee grounds (KMnO 4 -SCGS) was successfully synthesized for the adsorption of Pb(II). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and other characterization measurements were employed to evaluate the physical and chemical properties of KMnO 4 -SCGS. The results demonstrated that the adsorption behavior of Pb(II) was best fitted by the pseudo-second-order, Ritchie, and Langmuir isothermal models, indicating that the surface of KMnO 4 -SCGS was composed of homogeneous adsorption. The surface complexes with manganese oxide (MnO x ) and oxygen-containing functional groups, along with electrostatic interaction, physical adsorption, and ion exchange, played significant roles in the adsorption of Pb(II). The Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity for Pb(II) was 203.8 mg/g for KMnO 4 -SCGS, which was approximately 11.73 times higher than that of SCGS, and it remained over 80% after five cycles. Finally, the Box-Behnken design was utilized to optimize the results. Therefore, the modification of spent coffee grounds by KMnO 4 is a feasible approach for the adsorption of Pb(II). Graphic

Tunable coordination-responsive metal-phenolic membranes for selective and efficient Pb(II) remediation with low-chemical regenerant in actual wastewaters

Zhanqi Liu,Manyu Zhang,Shuo Wang,Hui Qiu,Yaran Song,Qina Sun,Tifeng Jiao,Qingrui Zhang

Heavy metal contamination in industrial wastewater, particularly lead (Pb(II)), poses significant environmental and health challenges. Conventional membrane technologies, like nanofiltration and ultrafiltration, struggle with selectivity and separation recovery in complex wastewater streams. To address this, we present an advanced metal-phenolic network (MPN) membrane that leverages the tunable coordination chemistry of Tannic Acid (TA) and metal complexes to address these limitations. The TA-MPN membrane demonstrates exceptional performance, achieving 6–15 times higher selectivity for Pb(II) than commercial polyamide membranes, even in the presence of competing ions such as Cd(II), Zn(II), Cr(VI) and Ni(II). In electroplating wastewater applications, the membrane reduces Pb(II) levels to below 0.1 mg/L with a capacity of 80 L/m 2 and removal efficiency exceeding 95 %, meeting stringent GB21900-2008 standards. Furthermore, the membrane exhibits outstanding regenerability, maintaining consistent performance over 10 regeneration cycles using extremely low doses of 0.1 % HCl. An economic analysis reveals a preparation cost of 22.6 USD/m 2 and a treatment cost of 0.227 USD per ton of wastewater, demonstrating its cost-effectiveness. The findings establish the TA-MPN membrane as a scientifically robust solution for selective and cost-effective Pb(II) remediation and recovery, effectively addressing the limitations of conventional membranes while advancing scalable and sustainable technologies for heavy metal treatment.

Self-confined growth of ZIF-8/MoS2-PA composite membranes for efficient and selective Pb(II) removal from complex water matrices

Tao Jian,Yongjin Fang,Xiang Cai,Mingyi Ying,Bisheng Li,Wangyang Ye,Liguo Shen,Leihong Zhao,Hongjun Lin

The development of high-performance membranes for heavy metal remediation remains a key challenge in advanced water treatment. In this work, a hierarchically structured composite membrane was fabricated via a self-confined growth strategy, in which Zn(OH) 2 nanostrands immobilized MoS 2 and directed the in-situ growth of ZIF-8, forming a defect-free interlayer for robust polyamide (PA) deposition. The resulting ZM15-PA membrane exhibits a highly hydrophilic surface with a contact angle of 31.5°, a strong positive surface charge under acidic conditions, and excellent water permeability reaching 83.5 L m -2 h -1 . Most notably, the membrane achieves an ultrahigh Pb(II) rejection rate of 99.2%, consistently reducing effluent concentrations to less than 10 μg L -1 , even in the presence of coexisting ions and dissolved organic matter. Mechanistic investigations reveal that Pb(II) removal is governed by synergistic mechanisms including electrostatic repulsion, molecular sieving, and coordination interactions involving Pb-S, Pb-O, and Pb-N bonds. Furthermore, the membrane demonstrates outstanding antifouling resistance, long-term operational stability, and antibacterial efficiency exceeding 99% under photo-Fenton conditions. These findings highlight the promise of self-confined growth strategies for stabilizing two-dimensional materials and developing multifunctional membranes for selective heavy metal removal in complex water matrices.

Diverse performances for Pb(II) adsorption by in situ formed Fe(III) oxyhydroxide derived from ferrate(VI) reduction and ferrous oxidation

Lan Bingyan,Hao Chenhui,Zhang Mengze,Yan Xiaomin

Two in situ formed Fe(III) oxyhydroxides (FeO x ) originated from ferrate reduction (designated FeO x –Fe VI ) and ferrous oxidation by H 2 O 2 (designated FeO x –Fe II ) were compared in the aspects of morphology, hydrolyzed species, surface binding mechanism of lead. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity calculated from the Langmuir model toward Pb(II) was 929.54 and 810.37 mg/g Fe by FeO x –Fe VI and FeO x –Fe II , respectively. At pH 6 and the same Fe/Pb ratio, the kinetic rate of Pb removal by the FeO x –Fe VI process was 8 times faster. FTIR, SEM, and Ferron assay suggest FeO x –Fe VI was associated with a lesser polymerization degree and contained more reactive hydroxyl-Fe polymers than those in the FeO x –Fe II sample. SAXS verified that the particles possessed a smaller, more homogeneous, and open structure when Fe was hydrolyzed by ferrate reduction than ferrous oxidation. XPS coupled with fractal analysis suggests the different sorption capacities of Pb(II) can be ascribed to their distinct growth patterns. Fast cluster agglomeration during FeO x –Fe II fabrication decreased the exposure of effective adsorption sites. In comparison, the incompact assemblies of FeO x –Fe VI clusters facilitated Pb(II) ions to access the interstices of octahedral FeO 6 units and formed an edge-sharing complex. This work provides new insight into mechanisms of particle fabrication and heavy metal removal of Fe(III) formed in situ.

Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) removal using a humic substance-based double network hydrogel in individual and multicomponent systems

Jianhong Ma,Jinming Luo,Yutang Liu,Yuanfeng Wei,Tao Cai,Xingwen Yu,Hui Liu,Chengbin Liu,John C. Crittenden

A systematic study of the interaction between adsorbents and potentially toxic metal ions in multicomponent systems is of great significance due to the coexistence of multiple potentially toxic metal ions in the real water environment. In this study, a new humic substance-based double network hydrogel (PAA/HS gel) was produced by a radical polymerization method and applied to Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) removal in both individual and multicomponent systems under various conditions. The macroporous network structure (aperture ≈ 10 μm) and high water permeability of the PAA/HS gel could fully facilitate the active site exposure and increase the potentially toxic metal ion diffusion rate. The PAA/HS gel exhibited high theoretical adsorption capacities of 360.50, 151.00 and 412.76 mg g−1 for Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) in individual systems. Noticeably, both interference and promotion of adsorption behaviors were identified in multicomponent systems. In binary systems, the adsorption capacity and rate were decreased for Pb(II) and Cu(II), while increased for Cd(II). In ternary systems, the adsorption capacity and rate for Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) were decreased. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics were well fitted by Langmuir–Freundlich and Elovich models, respectively, indicating that the PAA/HS gel possessed a heterogeneous surface and various types of binding sites. The FTIR and XPS studies confirmed that both nitrogen- and oxygen-containing functional groups (i.e., amino, phenolic hydroxyl and carboxyl groups) were involved in the adsorption process, while the interactions between functional groups and Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) were different.

A Novel Indium Doped Bismuth Nanofilm for Simultaneous Stripping Determination of Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) in River Water

Ruizhuo Ouyang,Lina Xu,Haifeng Wen,Penghui Cao,Pengpeng Jia,Tian Lei,Xia Zhou,Mei Tie,Xiaolei Fu,Yuefeng Zhao,Haizhou Chang,Yuqing Miao

A novel indium doped bismuth hybrid nanofilm was prepared on a glassy carbon electrode (Bi@In/GCE) and successfully used for the simultaneous measurements of aqueous zinc (Zn(II)), cadmium (Cd(II)) and lead (Pb(II)). The Bi@In hybrid nanofilm was greatly improved in the ability of electron transfer, surface morphology as well as hydrophilicity over single Bi or In film, and exhibited well-defined and separate peaks for Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) by square wave stripping voltammetry. Analytical characteristics of the developed Bi@In/GCE were explored by comparing with single Bi and In film modified electrodes with calibration curves, which exhibited the most preferable electrochemical behaviors toward three metals as predicted. The synergistic effect of Bi and In mainly contributed to the enhanced electrochemical activity of the new electrode. In the concentration range of 0-120 µg L -1 , a good linear relationship was achieved between the peak current and the metal concentration with correlation coefficient higher than 0.995. The detection limits were calculated to be 0.52, 0.15 and 0.67 µg L -1 for Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) (S/N=3), respectively. The analysis of river sample with Bi@In/GCE was performed with satisfactory recoveries higher than 98%, suggesting that the new method is promising as a simple, sensitive and efficient approach to detect the heavy metals in water samples.

Gongduan Fan,Jing Luo,Israel de Jesus Lopez Prieto,Rujing Lin,Xiaomei Zheng,Liang Hong

The synthesis conditions of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) have been optimized by a response surface method using central composite design (CCD) to obtain the high adsorption capability for the Pb(II) removal in aqueous solution. The physic-chemical properties of the as-prepared ZIF-8, such as morphology, structure and chemical composition, were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy-dispersive X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The adsorption capability, influence factors, isotherms, thermodynamics, kinetics and mechanism of Pb(II) in aqueous solutions were investigated. The optimal parameters of which have the highest adsorption capability for Pb(II) were 200 mL of water as the solvent, and the molar mass ratio of 2-methylimidazole and Zn(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O was 45.63. At this condition, the as-prepared ZIF-8 was a pure hexagonal three-dimensional crystal structure. The equilibrium adsorption capacity up to 668 mg/g for 300 mg/L of initial Pb(II) solutions and the adsorption was a spontaneous process. The largest adsorption capacity from Langmuir isotherm model was 686.25 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model. The equilibrium adsorption time and the optimal adsorption pH was 4 h and 6.0–7.0, respectively. The ZIF-8 still kept well adsorption effect after three times of usage. Therefore, this study showed that ZIF-8 is a promising sorbent for removing environmental pollutants.

A diamond/graphite nanoplatelets electrode for anodic stripping voltammetric trace determination of Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II)

Zhaofeng Zhai,Nan Huang,Hao Zhuang,Lusheng Liu,Bing Yang,Chun Wang,Zhigang Gai,Fengxiang Guo,Zhengjun Li,Xin Jiang

A platform for the determination of Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II) has been proposed based on a novel diamond/graphite (D/G) nanoplatelets film electrode using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry method. The microstructure and the composition of the film were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The D/G nanoplatelets structure with two-dimensional diamond nanoplatelet as the stem and highly conducting graphite layers as shells exhibits large specific surface and great electrical conductivity, significantly enhancing the electron transport in the electrochemical reaction. Under the optimum conditions, wide linear ranges and high sensitivity were achieved. In the typical detection process, two linear working ranges were obtained due to the incomplete anodic removal and the limits of detection (LODs) were estimated to be 1.72 μg L −1 , 0.47 μg L −1 , 4.86 μg L −1 and 0.45 μg L −1 for Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II), respectively. The simultaneous detections also verify the superior analytical performance with linear ranges from 10 μg L −1 to 250 μg L −1 and low LODs. Herein, we present a novel diamond/graphite nanoplatelets electrode without any modification/functionalization for the sensitive detection of trace heavy metal ions .

Sensitive and Selective Differential Pulse Voltammetry Detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) Using Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbon Nanofiber Film Electrode

Sanshuang Gao,Chuyang Xu,Nuerbiya Yalikun,Xamxikamar Mamat,Yongtao Li,Thomas Wågberg,Xun Hu,Jing Liu,Jun Luo,Guangzhi Hu

Carbon matrix materials are regarded as one of the most important electrode materials for heavy metal detection. But even so, optimization procedures of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) for tracing Cd(II) and Pb(II) remains challenging. Here, zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-derived nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanofibers (N-PCNFs) were investigated as a new electrode material for determining the concentration of Cd(II) and Pb(II). By optimizing electrochemical conditions such as deposition potential, deposition time, pH of buffer solution, and quantity of N-PCNFs loaded on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), the linear response curves of Cd(II) and Pb(II) could be obtained. Due to the unique structural feature and N content, the N-PCNFs possess excellent detection limits of 0.8 μg L−1 for Cd(II) and 0.3 μg L−1 for Pb(II) (S/N = 3). To manifest the practical use of the sensor platform the concentration of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in normal tap and waste water were monitored. According to the ICP-MS results, the calculated recovery (97.0–107%) indicates that N-PCNFs have potential as a candidate material to monitor the concentration of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in practical samples.

Zhou Liuzhu,Sankar Sekar,Jin Chen,Sejoon Lee,Deuk Young Kim,Ramalingam Manikandan

Here, we report a simple one-step preparation of polyrutin/silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface using an electrochemical deposition/polymerization technique. As prepared polyrutin/AgNPs/GCE has been characterized by different techniques such as SEM with elemental morphing, TEM with EDAX , XRD , ATR-IR to confirm the materials formation. Further, electrochemical behavior of the polyrutin/AgNPs/GCE was tested by cyclic voltammetry , EIS and differential pulse voltammetric techniques. As fabricated polyrutin/AgNPs/GCE was used for simultaneous detection of Pb(II) and Cd(II)ions using anodic stripping voltammetric techniques and stripping analysis of Pb(II) and Cd(II)ions analytical parameters like pH, preconcentration time were studied. The polyrutin/AgNPs/GCE has showed a linear concentration range from 29 nM to 140 nM and 57–203 nM with detection limit of 3 nM and 10 nM for Pb(II) Cd(II)ions respectively. Further, the modified electrode was tested towards detection of these heavy metal ions in different environmental samples and the found excellent recovery results were further correlated with ICP-MS results.

Dual-functionalized Fe(BTC)₈(PABA)₂ for ultrafast and ultrahigh-capacity capture of Cd(II) and Pb(II) with multiscale mechanistic insights

Kai Wang,Chunqing Niu,Xin Zhang,Nuo Liu,Zhengxin Luo,Chunhong Zhu,Jian Shi

A mixed mono−/multidentate ligand strategy engineered defective MIL-100(Fe). • Coordinatively unsaturated Fe O sites promoted rapid heavy-metal adsorption. • Defect engineering integrated Fe O exposure and amino functionalization. • Synergistic Fe–O/NH₂/COO − sites enhanced adsorption kinetics and affinity. • A flexible MOF membrane achieved efficient and recyclable heavy-metal removal. To address Pb(II) and Cd(II)-dominated heavy-metal contamination in water, a series of amino-bearing, defect-regulated Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were constructed using ligand engineering. In the synthetic design, the tritopic linker 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H₃BTC) was coupled with the monotopic modulator p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), enabling the simultaneous generation of coordinatively unsaturated Fe O centers and exposed -NH₂ functionalities within the framework. This dual functionalization substantially strengthened the affinity of the adsorbent for divalent heavy-metal ions. Among the obtained samples, 6 mg Fe(BTC)₈(PABA)₂, corresponding to an H₃BTC/PABA feed ratio of 8:2, delivered the best adsorption performance under the conditions of 25 °C, pH 5, and an initial concentration of 150 mg/L, with maximum uptake values of 732.03 mg/g for Pb(II) and 654.05 mg/g for Cd(II), and equilibrium was achieved within 15 min. Kinetic and equilibrium analyses followed the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm, respectively, indicating that monolayer chemisorption dominates the capture process. To improve the handling, recovery, and reusability of Fe(BTC)₈(PABA)₂ particles, they were incorporated into a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibrous matrix via electrospinning to obtain a Fe(BTC)₈(PABA)₂@PAN membrane. The membrane retained good structural stability and pronounced selectivity, particularly for Pb(II), in both binary-ion media and multi-cationic aqueous systems. After five adsorption-desorption cycles, more than 83% of the initial adsorption capacity was retained. DFT (Density functional theory) calculations further supported the experimental observations, showing that the adsorption originated from cooperative coordination among unsaturated Fe-O-M sites, carboxyl oxygen atoms, and amino nitrogen atoms. Therefore this study provides a defect- and functionality-coupled strategy for developing MOF-based adsorbents with both rapid uptake and high capacity for heavy-metal remediation. Engineering a Single-Plasmid Dual-Pigment Escherichia coli Biosensor for Simultaneous Colorimetric Detection of Pb(II) and Hg(II)

Zhaobo Hu,Yan Guo,Peishuo Cao,Keyan Wei,Zongjie Ma,Boxin Li,Dong Li,Liang Zhou,Chang-ye Hui

Abstract This work presents an engineered single-plasmid, dual-pigment whole-cell biosensor for simultaneous colorimetric detection of Pb(II) and Hg(II). To address the challenge of signal interference in cocontaminated environmental samples, a Pb(II)-responsive PbrR regulatory module driving indigo biosynthesis (blue, 620 nm) and an Hg(II)-responsive MerR module driving deoxyviolacein biosynthesis (purple, 570 nm) were integrated into Escherichia coli TOP10. The orthogonal decoupling of the two pigment pathways, combined with a unified 10 h induction protocol, enables independent chromogenic readout of both metals from a single cultivation. Dose-response assays afforded a broad linear dynamic range for Pb(II) of 0.977–2000 μM (R2 = 0.9503) with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.977 μM, alongside nanomolar sensitivity for Hg(II) with a linear range of 0.244–250 nM (R2 = 0.9800) and an LOD of 0.244 nM. A two-dimensional cross-concentration matrix experiment further demonstrated that the two detection channels maintain distinguishable dose-dependent responses under coexposure conditions, with crosstalk remaining within an acceptable range. Robust performance was retained in spiked surface water and seawater matrices, yielding Pb(II) LODs of 0.244 μM (surface water) and 0.488 μM (seawater), and Hg(II) LODs of 0.488 nM (surface water) and 0.977 nM (seawater). These detection limits approach or fall below relevant environmental regulatory thresholds, including the Class III surface-water standard for Hg(II). This self-contained, instrument-free pigment-based approach enables naked-eye discrimination of both metals in a standard microplate assay, offering a low-cost, high-throughput screening platform that complements standard instrumental methods for on-site environmental monitoring and emergency pollution response.
