As a new class of porous materials, hyper-crosslinked polymers can adsorb heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. This requires them to possess good surface hydrophilicity and active functional groups that can interact with heavy metals. In this research, three polymers, namely MAH-1, MAH-2, and MAH-3, were synthesized via the Friedel–Crafts alkylation reaction using phenyl maleic anhydride (MAH) as the monomer and dimethoxymethane (FDA), 1,4-p-dichloro-benzyl (DCX), and biphenyl dichlorobenzyl (BCMBP) as cross-linkers, respectively. The effect of the molecular size of the cross-linkers on polymer yields, morphology, and Pb2+ adsorption property was investigated. The yield of MAH-1 was low, and the product was soluble in methanol. This implied that when the cross-linker molecule was short, the steric hindrance caused by the substituents on the monomer benzene ring impeded polymer formation. MAH-2 formed nanoparticles that extended into thin sheets, while MAH-3 only formed nanoparticles, exhibiting clearly different morphologies. After alkalization, the maximum Pb2+ adsorption capacities of the two polymers, determined by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, were 216 mg g−1 and 134 mg g−1, respectively. Both polymers were applied to treat Pb2+ in simulated battery wastewater with a concentration of 32 mg L−1, and both reduced the concentration to below 0.55 mg L−1, meeting the requirements of the Lead and Zinc Industrial Pollutant Discharge Standard GB 25466-2010 (National Standards of the People’s Republic of China). Additionally, the materials demonstrated good reusability and showed potential for treating lead-contaminated water.

Graphical Core–shell magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @C nanoparticles are functionalized with sulfonic and carboxylic acid groups and employed to capture heavy metal ions in aqueous media. The magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @C nanoparticles can be easily separated with an external magnet and possess rapid removal kinetics, high adsorption capacities, and removal efficiencies for Pb 2+ , Hg 2+ , and Cd 2+ ions from aqueous solution. Core–shell magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @C nanoparticles functionalized with sulfonic and carboxylic acid groups were synthesized and employed to capture heavy metal ions in aqueous media. The Fe 3 O 4 cores possess unique magnetic properties for adsorbent separation, and the –SO 3 H and –COOH groups attached to the surface of the carbon shells determine the efficiency of heavy metal ion removal. Batch adsorption experiments showed that Pb 2+ , Hg 2+ , and Cd 2+ ions can be completely and quickly removed by the Fe 3 O 4 @C nanoparticles. The equilibrium was established within 5 min, and the maximum adsorption capacities of the Fe 3 O 4 @C nanoparticles toward Pb 2+ , Hg 2+ , and Cd 2+ ions were 90.7, 83.1, and 39.7 mg/g, respectively. The removal efficiencies were 96.3, 98.1, and 93.8 % for Pb 2+ , Hg 2+ , and Cd 2+ ions, respectively. This work provides a facile and general approach to synthesize magnetic functional nanocomposites for wastewater treatment.

In present study, the feasibility of applying a natural adsorbent with Fe 3+ modification (Fe 3+ -modified argillaceous limestone, FAL) on the competitive adsorption of heavy metals (i.e., Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ and Ni 2+ ) was evaluated. The current results revealed an efficient adsorption on Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ and Ni 2+ in mono-metal system. Further experiments demonstrated a high selectivity of Pb 2+ during the competitive adsorption of Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ and Ni 2+ . The adsorption selectivity of the metal ions followed the order of Pb ≫ Cd > Ni. In addition, both pH and ionic strength are important factors affecting the metal adsorptions. It is interestingly that various NOMs (i.e., humic acid (HA) and glycine (Gly)) exerted different effects on the adsorption behaviors, probably due to the different affinities for Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ and Ni 2+ and the redistribution of newly-formed metal-DOM complexes. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis together with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analysis revealed that the metal adsorptions were mainly regulated via the synergistic mechanisms of ion exchange by Na + , Ca 2+ , and Al 3+ , precipitation to form CdCO 3 and Pb 2 (OH) 2 (CO 3 ) 2 , as well as complexes of FAL-OPb and FAL-ONi by hydroxyl groups on the surface of FAL. The application of FAL would be a promising option in leading to an efficient heavy metal removal.

Lead contamination has posed a potential threat to the environment and food safety, arousing extensive concern. In this work, we fabricated a novel fluorescent sensing platform based on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and DNAzyme for monitoring Pb2+ in water and fish samples. ZIF-8 was proposed as a fluorescence quencher with the advantages of simple synthesis, low cost, and high quenching efficiency. The Pb2+-dependent GR5 DNAzyme containing the large ssDNA loop can be adsorbed onto ZIF-8 accompanied by fluorescence quenching. Upon binding with Pb2+, GR5 DNAzyme was activated and cleaved, leading to the release of FAM-labeled 5-base ssDNA, which restored the fluorescence. The “turn-on” assay can detect Pb2+ through the one-pot procedure in the range of 0.01–10.0 nM with a detection limit of 7.1 pM. The platform is promising for on-site monitoring of Pb2+ owing to the excellent performance of high sensitivity, low background, strong anti-interference ability, and simple operation.

Based on a Pb 2+ -specific 8–17 DNAzyme-induced catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA), a simple signal-on fluorescence strategy for lead ion detection was established. 8–17 DNAzyme was used as the recognition element of Pb 2+ , which catalyzed the cleavage of the RNA base embedded in the DNA substrate strand, while releasing part of the substrate strand (S’) as CHA initiator. And two hairpin probes (H1 and H2-FQ) were designed according to the sequence of S’ for CHA, in which H2-FQ was labeled with the fluorophore FAM and quencher BHQ-1 as fluorescent “molecular switch” based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). In the presence of Pb 2+ , the CHA reaction was triggered to form a large number of H1-H2 complexes, enabling enzyme-free isothermal amplification and a signal-on fluorescence strategy. In the concentration range of 0.5–1000 nM, the fluorescence signal increases with the increase of Pb 2+ concentration. The quantitative detection limit of Pb 2+ by this method is 0.5 nM, which has better detection performance compared with the FQ-labeled 8–17 DNAzyme method. The established biosensor exhibits good specificity and can be effectively used for the detection of Pb 2+ in real samples of river water and grass carp. Through ingenious nucleic acid sequence design, DNAzyme and CHA reactions are integrated to realize the enzyme-free isothermal amplifications and sensitive detection of Pb 2+ , which holds potential versatility in food supervision and environmental monitoring. A “turn-on” fluorescent probe based on amino-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOF-5-NH 2 ) is developed for the detection of Cu 2+ , Pb 2+ and pyrophosphate (P 2 O 7 4− , PPi). The fluorescence emission of fluorescent materials obtained by one-step synthesis is attributed to organic ligands. Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ coordinate with the amino group on the surface of the MOF-5-NH 2 , which is ascribed to the host-guest electron transfer between analyte and probe, giving rise to the fluorescence quenching . After adding PPi, the intense affinity between Cu 2+ and PPi remove Cu 2+ from the MOF-5-NH 2 , blocking of the electron transfer process, and the fluorescence can be recovered. The limit of detection is 0.057, 0.25 and 0.32 μmol L −1 for the detection of Cu 2+ , Pb 2+ and PPi, respectively. This turn-on mode based fluorescent probe shows preferable sensitivity and specificity to detect Cu 2+ , Pb 2+ and PPi. These results demonstrate that the fluorescent MOF-5-NH 2 as a sensing platform displays remarkably performance.

On-site detection of antibiotics and heavy metal ions is critical due to their severe impact on the environment and human health. In this study, allosteric transcription factors (aTFs) were integrated with optical fiber sensing technology to develop a aTF-quantum dot (QD) complex fluorescent fiber biosensor. This biosensor allows for the one-step quantitative on-site detection of tetracycline and Pb 2+ . Within 5 min, the prepared biosensor enabled the quantitative detection of tetracycline and Pb 2+ with detection limits of 16 nM and 0.14 nM, respectively. The linear detection ranges were 10 nM to 1 × 10 6 nM for tetracycline and 0.1 nM to 500 nM for Pb 2+ . The biosensors demonstrated excellent selectivity and could be reused at least five times after regeneration. In actual sample analyses, the biosensors achieved recovery rates of 96.86% to 112.66% for tetracycline and 98.69% to 104.01% for Pb 2+ . These results highlight the advantages of the prepared biosensors, including rapid detection, high sensitivity, and excellent selectivity. Furthermore, a portable water contaminant analyzer platform and corresponding software were developed, significantly enhancing the on-site rapid detection capabilities of optical fiber biosensors. This study reports a novel strategy for constructing optical fiber fluorescent biosensors, making them particularly suitable for field detection applications.

In this study, highly water-soluble Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) capped by 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) were successfully synthesized by three different synthetic methods. By comparison, QDs prepared by hydrothermal synthesis method at 100 °C heating for 2 h had the best phosphorescence emission properties. Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) could be remarkably and selectively quenched by Pb2+ in a pH 3.8 NaAc–HAc buffer solution. Based on the abovementioned finding, a simple, sensitive, and selective phosphorescence method for rapid detection of Pb2+ was successfully developed using MPA-capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs as a probe. Under the optimized conditions, the RTP intensity ratio of P0/P had a good linear relationship with Pb2+ concentration in the concentration ranges of 4 × 10−8–90 × 10−8 mol L−1 and 90 × 10−8–600 × 10−8 mol L−1 with the correlation coefficients of 0.9967 and 0.9970, which well followed the Stern–Volmer quenching equation, and the Stern–Volmer quenching constants were 8.41 × 105 L mol−1 and 3.452 × 106 L mol−1, respectively. The detection limit was 3.69 × 10−8 mol L−1, and the relative standard deviation for 11 repeated detections of 60 × 10−8 mol L−1 Pb2+ was 2.8%. According to the analysis of the Stern–Volmer quenching equation, UV-Vis absorption spectra, decay curves of phosphorescence emission, and phosphorescence lifetime, the quenching mechanism may imply that energy transfer and charge transfer in the interaction of MPA-capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs at the excited state with Pb2+ made QDs lose excitation energy. This resulted in phosphorescence of QDs causing dynamic quenching. The proposed method was successfully applied to detect Pb2+ in real water samples with satisfactory results, and the recoveries ranged from 93% to 109.3%. The developed method was simple, rapid, and specific and could effectively avoid fluorescence interference of the system, which opened up a promising prospect for the sensitive, convenient, and fast sensing and monitoring of small molecule pollutants in water based on phosphorescence sensors.

Background The accurate and rapid detection of blood lead concentration is of paramount importance for assessing human lead exposure levels. Fluorescent protein-based probes, known for their high detection capabilities and low toxicity, are extensively used in analytical sciences. However, there is currently a shortage of such probes designed for ultrasensitive detection of Pb 2+ , and no reported probes exist for the quantitative detection of Pb 2+ in blood samples. This study aims to fill this critical void by developing and evaluating a novel fluorescent protein-based probe that promises accurate and rapid lead quantification in blood. Results A simple and small-molecule fluorescent protein-based probe was successfully constructed herein using a peptide PbrBD designed for Pb 2+ recognition coupled to a single fluorescent protein, sfGFP. The probe retains a three-coordinate configuration to identify Pb 2+ and has a high affinity for it with a K d ’ of 1.48 ± 0.05 × 10 −17 M. It effectively transfers the conformational changes of the peptide to the chromophore upon Pb 2+ binding, leading to fast fluorescence quenching and a sensitive response to Pb 2+ . The probe offers a broad dynamic response range of approximately 37-fold and a linear detection range from 0.25 nM to 3500 nM. More importantly, the probe can resist interference of metal ions in living organisms, enabling quantitative analysis of Pb 2+ in the picomolar to millimolar range in serum samples with a recovery percentage of 96.64%–108.74 %. Significance This innovative probe, the first to employ a single fluorescent protein-based probe for ultrasensitive and precise analysis of Pb 2+ in animal and human serum, heralds a significant advancement in environmental monitoring and public health surveillance. Furthermore, as a genetically encoded fluorescent probe, this probe also holds potential for the in vivo localization and concentration monitoring of Pb 2+ .

Protein self-assembly has attracted extensive interest in the field of biomaterials and biomedicine due to its inherent biocompatibility and flexible designability. In this paper, we propose a potential route to generate a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform through Sn-triggered protein self-assembly. Specifically, Sn2+ ion was used to trigger the self-assembly of bovine serum albumin (BSA) to form in situ Sn/BSA film on the indium tin oxide (ITO) glass. Then, a CdS thin film as a PEC active material was electrodeposited on the Sn/BSA modified ITO electrode. The hybrid Sn/BSA film was demonstrated to stabilize the PEC response of the CdS. A dual-electrode PEC cell comprised a graphene oxide (GO)-modified photocathode and a Sn/BSA hybrid film/CdS-loaded photoanode. Pb2+-response deoxyribozymes (DNAzymes) were hybridized with the substrate strands tagged with Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) and then immobilized on the photocathode. Upon Pb2+-induced cleavage, Au NP-linked oligonucleotide fragment dislocated from the photocathode surface, resulting in a decrease in the PEC response. The present PEC biosensor showed highly sensitive detection of Pb2+ with a wide detection range from 10.0 fM to 0.1 μM and a low detection limit of 4.0 fM. This work demonstrates that the Sn/BSA hybrid film has potential application prospects in PEC sensing, thereby providing a new way of thinking for the design and development of the bioinspired biosensor.
