Direct seawater electrolysis offers a sustainable pathway for large-scale hydrogen production but is fundamentally limited by chloride-induced corrosion, parasitic chlorine chemistry, and rapid catalyst degradation at industrial current densities. Here, we report a Ru-doped Ni-based-layered double hydroxide integrated with a pyrolyzed wood-derived carbon scaffold (NiRu-LDH@pWD) that addresses these issues through synergistic electronic structure and electrode architecture engineering. Ru doping reconfigures the local electronic environment of Ni, strengthens Ni–O coordination, downshifts the d -band center, and suppresses Cl∗ adsorption, thereby enhancing catalytic selectivity and stability in chloride-rich electrolytes. Concurrently, Ru doping induced lattice modulation promotes preferential exposure of catalytically active (012) edge planes. The hierarchically porous pWD carbon scaffold enables rapid charge transport, efficient ion diffusion, and superaerophobic gas release, sustaining high-rate operation. As a result, the NiRu-LDH@pWD electrode delivers low overpotentials for HER (74.7 mV in 1 M KOH and 101.1 mV in seawater) and OER (240 mV in 1 M KOH and 260 mV in seawater) at 10 A cm −2 , and exhibits >1000 h operational durability at 1 A cm −2 in seawater. An anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer assembled with NiRu-LDH@pWD achieves a low cell voltage of 2.01 V at 1 A cm −2 with negligible performance decay, meanwhile techno-economic analysis estimates a competitive hydrogen production cost of ∼US$0.35 kg −1 by ASPEN calculation. This work establishes an integrated strategy that couples atomic-scale electronic regulation with macroscopic electrode design to enable selective, durable, and economically viable seawater electrolysis.

A chiral ruthenium probe (Ru-phe) for determination of amino acids was constructed by conjugating L-phenylalanine to a Ru-MOF precursor via EDC/NHS activation. The stereogenic center and aromatic side chain of L-Phe establish a chiral microenvironment that facilitates π–π stacking and hydrophobic interactions with tryptophan, thereby enabling efficient enantioselective recognition. The Ru-phe electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensing platform achieved broad linear quantification ranges—0.1 nM – 1 mM for L-Trp and 10 nM – 1 mM for D-Trp. The detection limits were 0.06 nM for L-Trp and 13 nM for D-Trp. Moreover, the method showed strong reproducibility in human serum samples, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 0.9–1.8% for L-Trp. Machine-learning-assisted classification further improved enantiomer discrimination accuracy to 96%. Overall, this work introduces an efficient and highly sensitive ECL approach that enables practical enantiomeric determination of tryptophan, offering strong potential for clinical monitoring.

Abstract The modulation of metal–support interaction (MSI) could provide exciting catalytic performance for the heterogeneous catalyst. Herein, we report a novel and fast strategy to controllably modulate the physicochemical structure of supports through NIR laser irradiation and then reconstruct the interface between the metal site and support. The abundant oxygen vacancies, tunable anatase-rutile phases, and unique surface properties of TiO2 supports can be formed by laser irradiation in 3 s. It is worth mentioning that the structure and properties of TiO2 supports can be controllably modulated by controlling the intensity of laser irradiation, thereby tuning the MSI between active Ru sites and TiO2 supports to promote the catalytic performance of Ru/TiO2 catalysts. Specifically, the optimized interfacial activity of the Ru/TiO2 catalyst would exhibit excellent electron/mass transfer, which facilitates the adsorption and activation of H-donor (alcohols) and ethyl levulinate (EL), thereby improving the EL catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) to γ-valerolactone (GVL), achieving 95% GVL yield, 96% EL conversion, and 99.0% GVL selectivity under mild conditions (150 °C, 12 h, 2-PrOH as H-donor). This research provides an innovative approach for fast modulation of support to tune the MSI, thus enhancing the catalytic activity of catalysts.

Sepiolite converted into hierarchical porous carbon. • Ru nanoparticles anchored via C-O-Ru bonds. • 38 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm −2 . • SMSI tunes Ru electronic structure. • DFT confirms optimal ΔGH and adsorption. Ruthenium metal has been widely utilized as an efficient catalyst for hydrogen production electrocatalytic water splitting. However, its high cost and low atomic utilization efficiency are regarded as significant limitations for practical applications. In this study, Ru nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 2 to 10 nm were grown in situ onto the modified surface of sepiolite, a cheap mineral with limited electrical conductivity, via a low-cost synthetic strategy under mild conditions. The novelly synthesized catalyst shows a specific surface area of 422.1 m 2 /g with a pore volume of 0.213 cm 3 /g, and the multi-level pore structure of carbonized modified sepiolite is maintained. XPS and FTIR results indicate that abundant C-O-Ru functional groups. The synthesized composite exhibits excellent HER performance in acidic electrolytes, with an overpotential of 38 mV (at 10 mA/cm 2 current density), even lower than commercial platinum–carbon catalysts (39 mV). And stability of the catalyst is maintained after a 50-hour cycle, with a high-frequency region of the Nyquist diagram and minimal impedance arc diameter. Theoretical calculations also demonstrate that the synthesized catalyst exhibits considerable water adsorption capability (−0.925 eV) while maintaining a near-optimal ΔG H* value (−0.14 eV), which is favor of the Volmer step and efficient hydrogen desorption. Biomethane production from renewable biomass faces significant challenges through conventional anaerobic digestion or thermochemical processes. While recent advances in mild hydrogenolysis of lignocellulose show promise, the conversion of lipid-rich feedstocks (e.g., waste cooking oil) into methane remains unexplored due to their stable C‒C bonds. Herein, we demonstrate a ruthenium (Ru) catalyst supported on rutile-phase TiO 2 that enables direct hydrogenolysis of triglycerides into methane. Under optimized conditions (300 °C, 1 MPa H 2 ), the Ru/TiO 2 -R system achieves 91%–99% methane yield from various fatty acids/esters, including unrefined waste cooking oil. The catalyst exhibits exceptional stability over multiple reaction cycles. This work establishes the first viable route for converting waste lipids into biomethane, potentially expanding renewable methane production capacity by ∼40% through utilization of global waste oil resources (500 million tons annually). The technology offers dual environmental benefits by simultaneously addressing organic waste management and clean energy production.

A unique Ru/Cu@CN featuring Cu single atoms-spurred Ru clusters on a N-modified carbon support was synthesized. • The hydrogen evolution reaction performance of Ru/Cu@CN was precisely regulated via Cu single-atom electronic networks. • The Ru/Cu@CN-based AEMWE achieves a high current density of 5.4 A cm −2 @2.0 V in 1 M KOH@80 °C. • The Ru/Cu@CN-based AEMWE operates stably at 2 A cm −2 for over 600 h without a significant voltage decay. Developing cost-effective, highly efficient, and durable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts is critical for the commercialization of anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE). However, this remains a significant challenge due to the over-reliance on platinum-based catalysts, especially when operating at ampere-level current densities. Here, we present a Cu electron-networking strategy to create Cu single atom-stabilized Ru clusters on an N-modified carbon support (Ru/Cu@CN), in which bridged Cu sites can efficiently stabilize Ru clusters and promote uniform dispersion of high-density Ru through strong metal-support interactions while weakening the overly strong Ru H bond via Ru Cu electron transfer, thereby substantially enhancing the HER activity and stability of Ru/Cu@CN. As a result, the Ru/Cu@CN-based AEMWE achieves exceptional current densities of 5.4 A cm −2 at 2.0 V and 3 A cm −2 at 1.79 V in 1 M KOH with a low Ru loading of 0.3 mg cm −2 , fulfilling the US Department of Energy (DOE) 2025 target (3 A cm −2 at <1.8 V) and competing favorably with the state of the art. Moreover, we demonstrate that the Ru/Cu@CN-based AEMWE can be operated at a high current density of 2 A cm −2 for over 600 h without a significant cell voltage decay Ru/Cu@CN thus represents a promising HER catalyst for practical AEMWE applications.

Developing efficient and durable electrocatalysts toward
the acidic
oxygen evolution reaction is crucial for the advancement of renewable
hydrogen energy technologies. Ruthenium dioxide stands out as one
of the most promising acidic OER catalysts. However, the unsatisfactory
stability of RuO 2 and the sluggish proton-coupled electron
transfer kinetics of OER hinder its practical application. Herein,
we introduce Se doping to form a Se–Ru–O asymmetric
configuration into RuO 2 to tailor electron redistribution
and achieve both high activity and stability. The obtained Se-RuO 2 shows superior electrocatalytic activity with a small overpotential
of 212 mV at 10 mA cm –2 and a long durability of
230 h. Electrochemical tests and density functional theory calculations
demonstrate that Se-RuO 2 exhibits enhanced deprotonation
kinetics and optimized adsorption energy of reaction intermediates,
thereby boosting OER activity. Morever, the electronic interactions
mediated by the asymmetric Se–Ru–O bond diminish the
covalency of Ru–O bonds and thus boost the stability of RuO 2 . This work offers a facile strategy for the development of
high-performance catalysts incorporated with nonmetallic elements.

Regulating
the size of the active metal is crucial to change the
electronic structure and catalytic activity. Here, five Ru/CN-ZrO 2 catalysts with different sizes are precisely constructed
via a two-step wet chemical synthesis method. Remarkably, a volcano
trend between the size of Ru and hydrogenation activity for levulinic
acid (LA) is disclosed. The Ru nanoclusters with an average size of
∼2.7 nm (Ru/CN-ZrO 2 -2) exhibit the highest catalytic
activity for LA hydrogenation, achieving an LA conversion of 99.4%
and a γ-valerolactone (GVL) selectivity of 99.3%. Besides, the
corresponding turnover frequency (TOF) is 4860.1 h –1 , which far surpasses that most reported for Ru-based catalysts.
Mechanism studies reveal Ru/CN-ZrO 2 -2 with moderate size
is beneficial to enhance the interaction between Ru and support, directly
promoting the adsorption of LA, and thereby exhibiting the lowest
activation energy. This work emphasizes the size effect to improve
the catalytic activity, which is an important guidance for the rational
design of hydrogenation catalysts.

Diamine synthesis from amino acids offers an economical and green route to high-value nylon monomers, yet developing highly efficient and stable catalysts remains challenging. This study developed a RuO x /TiO 2 catalyst that in-situ forms a Ru-RuO x heterointerface during the reaction, in which excellent 1,5-pentanediamine (PDA) yield (up to 69.8%) and productivity (63.5 h −1 ) for converting L-lysine achieved under 200 °C and 2 MPa H 2 , significantly outperforming other Ru-based catalysts supported on various carriers. Characterizations revealed that the strong RuO x -TiO 2 interaction suppresses partial reduction of RuO x , forming a Ru-RuO x interface—where Ru activates and dissociates H 2 while hydrogenating carboxyl groups to aldehydes, and RuO x catalyzes alcohol dehydrogenation, ultimately leading to PDA via aldehyde decarbonylation. Crucially, an optimal Ru-RuO x ratio is key to achieving both high yield and reaction rate. This work provides a novel strategy for developing catalysts for bio-based nylon monomers.

The hydrogenation of CO 2 to CO represents a promising synthetic pathway to replace coal gasification and methane reforming. Ru-based catalysts showed high activity in CO 2 hydrogenation but lower CO selectivity due to competing methanation reactions. Here, we reported a surface sulfur (S) decoration strategy to shift the methanation to 99% selectivity for CO on the Ru/TiO 2 catalyst in CO 2 hydrogenation. The optimized 2%Ru/TiO 2 -SO catalyst achieved a CO 2 conversion of 57.9% with 100% CO selectivity at 550 ° C, and it operated stably even in a reaction gas containing an H 2 S impurity. Notably, even after high-temperature oxidation treatment at 800 ° C, the 2%Ru/TiO 2 -SO catalyst still retains high CO selectivity (>98.2%). Structural characterization confirms strong S–Ru interactions between S species and Ru nanoparticles in S-decorated catalysts, with highly dispersed S species bonded to the Ru surface as S 2− , thereby leaving the surface Ru atoms in an electron-deficient state. Mechanistic studies reveal that CO was formed via direct dissociation of CO 2 on this 2%Ru/TiO 2 -SO catalyst. The adsorption strength of CO* species and H 2 activation capacity were significantly suppressed on S-decorated catalysts featuring electron-deficient Ru species, thus inhibiting the deep hydrogenation of CO and enabling exclusive CO generation. The surface S decoration strategy employed here will provide insights and guidance for the design of supported metal catalysts with tunable selectivity in other heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation reactions, particularly those operating at high temperatures.

A directional photogenerated electron transfer channel from ZnIn 2 S 4 to Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru was formed in ZnIn 2 S 4 /Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru. • The interface electronic delocalization effect between Ru nanoclusters and Mo 2 TiC 2 synergistically optimizes the water dissociation and hydrogen evolution sites. • ZnIn 2 S 4 /Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru exhibits excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity under both visible light and natural light conditions. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) rate on ZnIn 2 S 4 is severely limited by the low utilization of photogenerated electrons and the sluggish reaction kinetics. Driving the directional transfer of photogenerated electrons to the target site is crucial for enhancing the electron utilization efficiency and the PHE performance. Herein, this study rationally designed a ternary composite photocatalyst ZnIn 2 S 4 /Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru C , in which Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru C serves as an electron acceptor and efficient active site. The in-situ KPFM and Mott-Schottky results indicate that the establishment of interfacial electron transport channel accelerates the transfer of photogenerated electrons from ZnIn 2 S 4 to Mo 2 TiC 2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations verify the strong metal-support interaction (EMSI) and interfacial electron delocalization of Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru C , which synergistically optimize the water dissociation at Ru nanocluster and the hydrogen evolution desorption at the Mo 2 TiC 2 terminal, promoting the efficient utilization of photogenerated electrons. Therefore, ZnIn 2 S 4 /Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru C achieved a PHE rate of 6.15 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 under visible light, and demonstrated excellent potential for PHE application under natural light. This study provides a new paradigm for integrating electron transfer dynamics with active site engineering to improve the utilization efficiency of photogenerated electrons in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution process. There is an urgent need for development of efficient and long-term stable catalytic electrodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) via alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) to enable economically competitive hydrogen energy production. In this work, a facile air pyrolysis treatment is used to fabricate RuO2 coatings on a Ti substrate (RuO2/TF), and the surface state of the active coatings during HER was investigated. It was observed that the original RuO2 surface transforms into a partially reduced form composed of mixed valence states (0/+4). Although the newly-formed surface has higher activity than RuO2, the Ru state and current efficiency fluctuate with the electrolysis conditions, and the HER activity will be limited by the final reduced state (i.e., Ru0). To stabilize and improve the active Ru surface, Cu, which experiences a polyvalence change around the HER potential, is doped into the RuO2 coating as an electron buffer. This modification with Cu electron buffers results in an active Ru surface that exhibits stable chemical states with excellent activity, rapid responsivity, and excellent stability under the fluctuating operation conditions of alkali electrolyzers. The AWE system with optimized RCO/TF as cathodes exhibits a lower voltage (2.07 V) and higher current efficiency (95.25%) at a current density of 1 A cm−2 than RuO2/TF (2.40 V, 80.97%). This study unveils the origin of the activity of Ru coatings for HER and proposes an approach to composition design for other multicomponent electrodes and electrochemical applications.
