The dual mode unity solid-phase microextraction (DMU-SPME) was evaluated against traditional solvent-based methods, including solvent-assisted flavor evaporation (SAFE) and simultaneous distillation extraction (SDE), to explore its potential as an alternative. Compared to SAFE and SDE, DMU-SPME is a green extraction technology for volatile organic compounds. The results demonstrated that DMU-SPME significantly outperformed both SAFE and SDE in extracting medium-volatility compounds (retention time of 20–40 min), identifying 55 unique volatiles. With the exception of hydrocarbons, DMU-SPME exhibited superior extraction efficiency and significantly better stability compared to both SAFE and SDE methods. Thus, DMU-SPME proves to be a promising alternative for the comprehensive extraction of volatile organic compounds.

To minimize the pesticide loss and enhance the efficiency of active ingredient utilization, the pH-responsive controlled-release pesticide with easy operation has been widely applied despite for its potential on bothering the non-target organisms while using acid or alkaline alone. To overcome that obstacle, we developed an environmentally safe herbicide particle with a smart wetting surface that can be regulated through consecutive base-acid stimuli to maintain stable pH levels. Herein, attapulgite (ATP) is mixed with glyphosate (Gly) initially and the resultants are coated by suspensions of phenylamine-modified ATP (ph-ATP) and amino silicon oil (ASO), ultimately the outmost polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) are constructed to acquire the smart herbicide (AG@ph-AA@PVP). The base may destroy the outmost PVP membrane, and the later acid treatment turns ph-AA layer gradually from hydrophobic to hydrophilic due to protonation of aniline groups, both of which allow water to invade further and promote Gly release. Therefore, the AG@ph-AA@PVP appears with excellent base-acid sensitivity and controlled-release performance, being demonstrating by the burst Gly release in water and significant weeds control efficiency in pot experiments. The interaction of the materials and the surface wettability were analyzed for explaining the controlled-release mechanism. Besides, AG@ph-AA@PVP possesses high environmental stability and good biosafety. This work develops a simple and feasible technology for environmental-safe and on-demand Gly delivery, assisting for advancement of sustainable and green agriculture.

Background: Oral insulin delivery is considered a revolutionary alternative to daily subcutaneous injection. However, the oral bioavailability of insulin is very low due to the poor oral absorption into blood circulation. Methods: To promote penetration across the intestinal epithelium and achieve enhanced and safe glucose-responsive oral insulin delivery, pH and H 2 O 2 dual-sensitive nanoparticles (NPs) were constructed. The NPs were loaded of glucose oxidase (GOx) and insulin by pH and H 2 O 2 dual-sensitive amphiphilic polymer incorporated with phenylboronic ester-conjugated poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and poly(carboxybetaine) (PCB). The dual-sensitive NPs were utilized for the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) after oral administration. Results: The dual-sensitive NPs could enhance the transport of insulin across the intestinal epithelium into blood facilitated by zwitterionic PCB. By virtue of the generated low pH and high H 2 O 2 with GOx in hyperglycemic environment, the pH and H 2 O 2 dual-sensitive NPs were disassembled to achieve rapid and sustained release of insulin. After oral administration of the dual-sensitive NPs in enteric capsules into T1DM mouse model, the oral bioavailability of insulin reached 20.24%, and the NPs achieved hypoglycemic effect for a few hours longer than subcutaneously injected insulin. Importantly, the pH and H 2 O 2 dual-sensitive NPs could ameliorate the local decline of pH and rise of H 2 O 2 to avoid the toxic side effect. Conclusion: Therefore, this work would provide a promising platform for the enhanced and safe treatment of diabetes mellitus.

Dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), a promising alternative fumigant, has been highly desirable for excellent management of soil pests and diseases. However, high volatility and moderate toxicity of this sulfide limit its application. To address these issues, a novel controlled release formulation of DMDS was proposed employing multiple emulsions and polyurea microcapsules (DMDS@MEs-MCs). The successful combination of the two technologies was revealed by confocal laser scanning microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared. According to the multiple encapsulation structure, the encapsulation efficiency decreased by only 3.13% after thermal storage, compared with a 15.21% decrease of microcapsules made with only a monolayer film. DMDS@MEs-MCs could effectively control the release of active ingredient, which increased applicator and environmental safety during application. Moreover, it could be facilely used by spraying and drip irrigation instead of a special fumigation device. The innovative formulation exhibited better control efficacy on soil pathogens (Fusarium spp. and Phytophthora spp.) and root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) than DMDS technical concentration (DMDS TC). In addition, it did not inhibit seed germination after 10 days when the plastic film was removed from the fumigated soil. This method appears to be of broad interest for the development of safe and handy fumigant application.

Inorganic nanoparticles with excellent anti-ultraviolet ability such as titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) are extensively utilized in sunscreens to protect against UV-induced skin photodamage and carcinogenesis. However, conventional TiO 2 nanoparticles exhibit inherent photocatalytic activity that generates harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS), which limits their applications as sunscreen. In this work, we firstly apply polysaccharide-polyphenol interaction to the sunscreen application of inorganic UV filters (named TiO 2 -TA-CS). Because of the synergistic effect of corn starch (CS) in enhancing TiO 2 nanoparticles dispersion and blocking ROS, TiO 2 -TA-CS exhibit the enhanced UV absorption and leverages tannic acid (TA) to achieve complete eradication of hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals generated by TiO 2 nanoparticles, which superiors to the previous reports of bio-safe sunscreen. Furthermore, the UV absorption capacity of TiO 2 -TA-CS Pickering emulsions is increased by a factor of 2.5 and there is no obvious cytotoxicity in the UV evaluation. Compared with commercial sunscreens, it has lower UV penetration rate and higher SPF value. In vitro studies and cell viability assays collectively confirm the excellent efficacy of the formulated sunscreen in mitigating photoaging and protecting skin cells against UV-induced damage. Therefore, the TiO 2 -TA-CS Pickering emulsions exhibit favorable biocompatibility, high UV protection, and human skin safety, providing a new strategy for sun protection and other medical applications.

Vinyl ester resins (VER) are widely used in various fields because of their excellent corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, and processability. However, their inherent flammability severely limits further development. To address this issue, a reactive flame-retardant co-monomer (DHP) containing phosphorus in two different chemical environments (+3 and +5 oxidation states) was synthesized and combined with modified diatomite to prepare flame-retardant VER composites. The results showed that at a DHP loading of 30%, the composite achieved an LOI of 27.1% and passed the UL-94 V0 vertical burning test. When 5% DHP was replaced with 5% modified diatomite, the composite maintained a V0 rating, with the LOI increasing to 27.3%. Furthermore, the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total heat release (THR) decreased from 426.2 kW/m² and 39.7 MJ/m² to 357.3 kW/m² and 33.3 MJ/m², respectively, corresponding to reductions of 35.8% and 42.0%, respectively, compared with those of neat VER. Analysis of the flame-retardant mechanism revealed that during pyrolysis, part of the phosphorus in DHP entered the gas phase as phosphorus-containing free radicals, inhibiting combustion reactions by quenching active radicals. The remaining phosphorus generated phosphoric or polyphosphoric acids, catalyzing matrix charring and forming a dense, continuous char layer that impeded heat and mass transfer. The incorporation of modified diatomite further promoted char formation, enhancing the condensed-phase flame-retardant effect. This study proposes a synergistic flame-retardant strategy combining a dual-valence phosphorus-containing co-monomer with modified diatomite, offering a novel approach for developing high-performance flame-retardant VERs.

A successive APD-mediated host–guest strategy was developed for CS@ANF aerogels. • ANFs formed an interfacially reinforced structure within the CS skeleton. • CS@ANF0.5 achieved a compressive strength and modulus of 3.5 and 2.7 MPa. • CS@ANF0.5 showed effective thermal protection and enhanced flame retardancy. Biomass-derived aerogels provide sustainable, lightweight porous platforms with tunable structures and broad functional potential. However, their practical use is still limited by energy-intensive drying routes, weak mechanical integrity, and the inherent flame sensitivity of organic porous skeletons. Here, a successive ambient-pressure drying (APD)-mediated host–guest assembly strategy was developed to construct robust chitosan/aramid nanofiber (CS@ANF) composite aerogels. A lightweight CS aerogel was first prepared by APD as the host scaffold, followed by infiltration of guest ANF sol and a second APD step that formed an ANF-enriched reinforcing structure along the pore walls rather than a bulk-blended phase. Experiments and finite-element simulations reveal that the ANF-reinforced pore-wall structure promotes more effective stress transfer and suppresses localized structural collapse. The resulting composite aerogel achieved a compressive strength of 3.5 MPa and a compressive modulus of 2.7 MPa, together with improved tensile performance and cyclic stability. Moreover, the composite aerogel delivers reliable high-temperature protection and enhanced flame retardancy with more intact char residues. This host–guest APD strategy offers a potentially scalable route to mechanically resilient and fire-safe biomass-based aerogels.

Conventional flammable liquid electrolytes compromise the safety of lithium metal batteries. We address this via the molecular design and in-situ catalyst-free ring-opening polymerization of a trifluoromethyl-functionalized polyphosphoester, yielding a cross-linked solid polymer electrolyte (TFMPE). The deliberate incorporation of phosphate, ether, and carbonate units with -CF3 side groups imparts intrinsic flame retardancy (from P/F) and governs ion transport. The resulting TFMPE membrane exhibits a balanced suite of properties: high ionic conductivity (3.7×10-4 S cm-1), a wide electrochemical window (4.9 V), and a high Li+ transference number (0.51), which promotes uniform Li+ flux and improves interfacial stability. Moreover, in-situ polymerization forms a seamless electrode/electrolyte interface, suppresses Li dendrite growth, and enables stable Li||Li cycling for 2000 h. Full cells using LiFePO4, LiMnFePO4, and LiCoO2 cathodes also show excellent cycling stability.

Driven by global carbon neutrality and sustainable development goals, advanced polymer materials with fire safety and environmental compatibility are crucial. In view of the environmental and performance limitations of traditional flame retardants, a metal–organic framework (MOF) template strategy was proposed to design hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets and atomically dispersed cobalt (Co0) sites through boron/nitrogen co-doping and pyrolysis of ZIF-67. Inspired by the hierarchical architecture of pine cones in nature, the designed nanoarchitecture features a biomimetic three-dimensional (3D) flower-like structure. The confinement effect of MOFs inhibits the re-stacking of h-BN, thereby enhancing the interfacial adhesion to thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The peak heat release rate and smoke release rate of TPU/h-BNNSs@Co composites decreased by 47.5% and 44.5%, respectively. The h-BN nanosheets form a ceramic barrier, while the Co0 single-atom site catalyzes the conversion of CO to CO2. Simultaneously, the composite material exhibits a 42.8% increase in thermal conductivity while maintaining satisfactory mechanical properties even after ultraviolet aging. This work not only highlights the potential of MOF-derived strategies for multifunctional flame-retardant systems but also provides a new paradigm for the development of recyclable composites with efficient fire protection and thermal management properties.

A high-purine diet is an important factor in the development of hyperuricemia (HUA), in which the intestinal tract is the main site of dietary purine absorption. Inhibition of intestinal concentrative nucleoside transporter 2 (CNT2) can inhibit dietary purine-induced elevation of serum uric acid (sUA) levels. However, there is a lack of research on CNT2 inhibitors for the treatment of HUA. By using high throughput virtual screening from an in-house natural product database, the natural active component 5-methylvisammioside (MeV) in Saposhnikovia divaricata (Turcz.) Schischk was predicted to be an effective CNT2 inhibitor with the highest docking score. In vitro , MeV showed the strongest inhibitory activity against CNT2, with IC 50 value of 11.22 ± 2.18 μM. Moreover, MeV showed little or almost no inhibitory effect on other nucleoside transporters CNT3 and equilibrative nucleoside transporters (ENTs), as well as on uric acid (UA) transporter-related targets. In vivo , MeV significantly reduced sUA, inhibited adenosine uptake, and had an ameliorative effect on pathological changes in the liver, kidney, and intestinal tract. Moreover, MeV improved serum and intestinal indices related to inflammation and oxidative stress in mice, reduced intestinal permeability. Through our further study, we found that MeV inhibited the activation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and NF-κB P65, reduced the production of the NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, and improved intestinal injury in a high UA environment. The study suggests that MeV is a potent CNT2 inhibitor for the treatment of HUA and also protects intestinal function by inhibiting the ROS/NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway.

Photothermal hydrophobic surfaces offer a promising solution for mitigating ice hazards under low-temperature, high-humidity conditions via solar-driven de-icing. However, surface contamination can compromise photothermal efficiency, while fabric-applicable coatings must also provide flexibility, breathability, durability, and safe thermal regulation (≈50 °C). Current systems require further optimization to balance these demands for practical use. Here, a nanorod-embedded photothermal strategy is presented that integrates superhydrophobicity, anti-icing, and de-icing capabilities with environmental robustness in fabrics. The composite comprises a polypyrrole-loaded cellulose nanocrystal inner layer for photothermal conversion and a fluoroalkyl silane-modified silica top layer for superhydrophobicity. The synergy between hierarchical micro–nano roughness and photothermal activation enables an “external repellency, internal heating” mechanism, effectively overcoming the limitations of passive coatings. This dual-functional architecture achieves a solar absorption rate of 97.2% and reaches 53.1 °C under 100 mW cm⁻ 2 irradiation, while remaining safe for human contact and maintaining breathability (moisture permeability: 6.86 × 10 3 g·m⁻ 2 ·d⁻¹). It delays freezing by 417 s at −15 °C and reduces the melting time of an ice cube by 53.2% under 1-sun illumination. The fabric exhibits appreciable chemical stability, abrasion resistance, flexibility, and robustness under extreme conditions, ensuring long-term performance. This work offers a scalable solution for outdoor and personal protective equipment in cold environments.

Periodontitis represents a chronic inflammatory disorder triggered by multi-species oral bacterial infection of periodontal tissues. If left untreated, this condition can culminate in severe consequences, including alveolar bone resorption and loss of tooth support architecture. Given these clinical challenges, the development of a safe and effective strategy for plaque elimination and dental whitening remains a critical unmet need in periodontal care. To address this, we report the design and fabrication of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based hydrogel loaded with tannic acid @ nanocellulose nanoparticles (PTAN). This novel composite system demonstrates dual functionality: robust antibacterial activity and biocompatible teeth-whitening efficacy. Under ultrasonic irradiation, the cavitation-generated mechanical forces drive targeted attachment of tannic acid @ nanocellulose nanoparticles (TAN) to bacterial surfaces. This process induces bidirectional impact and frictional forces, rendering bacterial cell walls mechanically sensitive. Additionally, it promotes the production of hydroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen, while enhancing the transmission of tannic acid-mediated death signals to pathogens. Concurrently, the hydrogel's porous architecture synergizes with the polyphenolic binding capacity of tannic acid to pigmented substrates. This dual-mechanism enables efficient capture and adsorption of chromogenic molecules within the hydrogel matrix. Collectively, our findings establish PTAN hydrogel as a rapid, highly effective, and biocompatible strategy for simultaneous plaque removal and dental decolorization, offering promising translational potential for clinical periodontal therapy.
