Largely Enhancing Luminous Efficacy, Color-Conversion Efficiency, and Stability for Quantum-Dot White LEDs Using the Two-Dimensional Hexagonal Pore Structure of SBA-15 Mesoporous Particles

Jiasheng Li,Yong Tang,Zongtao Li,Xinrui Ding,Binhai Yu,Liwei Lin

Quantum-dot (QD) white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are promising for illumination and display applications due to their excellent color quality. Although they have a high quantum yield close to unity, the reabsorption of QD light leads to high conversion loss, significantly reducing the luminous efficacy and stability of QD white LEDs. In this report, SBA-15 mesoporous particles (MPs) with two-dimensional hexagonal pore structures (2D-HPS) are utilized to largely enhance the luminous efficacy and color-conversion efficiency of QD white LEDs in excess of 50%. The reduction in conversion loss also helps QD white LEDs to achieve a lifetime 1.9 times longer than that of LEDs using QD-only composites at harsh aging conditions. Simulation and testing results suggest that the waveguide effect of 2D-HPS helps in reducing the reabsorption loss by constraining the QD light inside the wall of 2D-HPS, decreasing the probability of being captured by QDs inside the hole of 2D-HPS. As such, materials and mechanisms like SBA-15 MPs with 2D-HPS could provide a new path to improve the photon management of QD light, comprehensively enhancing the performances of QD white LEDs.

Inclusion of the poorly water-soluble drug simvastatin in mesocellular foam nanoparticles: Drug loading and release properties

Yanzhuo Zhang,Jinghai Zhang,Tongying Jiang,Siling Wang

The purpose of this study was to develop spherical mesocellular foam (MCF) loaded with a poorly water-soluble drug, intended to be orally administered, able to improve the dissolution rate and enhance the drug loading capacity. Spherical MCF with a continuous 3-D pore system was synthesized using Pluronic 123 triblock polymer (P123) as a surfactant coupled with cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as a co-surfactant. A model drug, simvastatin (SV), was loaded onto spherical MCF via a procedure involving a combination of adsorption equilibrium and solvent evaporation . The drug release rate and the drug loading efficiency of spherical MCF were compared with those of fibrous SBA-15. Investigations using nitrogen adsorption , scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and HPLC demonstrated the successful incorporation of SV into the MCF host. It was found that spherical MCF has a high drug loading efficiency up to 37.5%, and higher than that of fibrous SBA-15 with a pore diameter of 6.5   nm. It is worth noting that fast release rate of SV was obtained from spherical MCF compared with SBA-15 and pure crystalline SV using enzyme-free simulated intestinal fluid (SIF, pH 6.8).

Highly selective extraction of uranium from wastewater using amine-bridged diacetamide-functionalized silica

Fan Zhang,Yi Liu,Kai-Qiang Ma,Heng Yan,Yue Luo,Feng-Cheng Wu,Chu-Ting Yang,Sheng Hu,Shu-Ming Peng

A major environmental concern related to nuclear energy is wastewater contaminated with uranium, thus necessitating the development of pollutant-reducing materials with efficiency and effectiveness. Herein, highly selective mesoporous silicas functionalized with amine-bridged diacetamide ligands SBA-15-ABDMA were prepared. Different spectroscopy techniques were used to probe the chemical environment and reactivity of the chelating ligands before and after sorption . The results showed that the functionalized SBA-15-ABDMA had a strong affinity for uranium at low pH (pH = 3) with desirable sorption capacity (68.82 mg/g) and good reusability (> 5). It showed excellent separation performance with a high distribution coefficient ( K d,U > 10 5 mL/g) and separation factors SF U/Ln > 1000 at a pH of 3.5 in the presence of lanthanide nuclides, alkaline earth metal and transition metal ions . In particular, SiO 2 spheres-ABDMA was used as a column material, which achieved excellent recovery of U(VI) (> 98%) and good reusability for samples of simulated mining and nuclear industries wastewater. XPS and crystallography studies clearly illustrated the tridentate coordination mode of U(VI)/PEABDMA and the mechanism and origin behind the high selectivity for U.

Mesopore-confined AlLi-LDHs/SBA-15 with interfacial electronic reconstruction and hydration-shell sieving: Breaking the capacity–selectivity trade-off for lithium extraction from high Mg2+/Li+ brines

Jingjing Jiang,Shijian Zhou,Jing Ding,Jinhe Sun

3.25 mg g −1 capacity at ultrahigh Mg 2+ /Li + ratio of 474.6 and excellent cycling use. • AlLi-LDHs were confined in SBA-15 pores via solvent evaporation-induced strategy. • Si-O-Al/Li interface increases electron density, boosting electrostatic adsorption. • Hydration-shell sieving effect excludes Mg 2+ , Na + , K + for selective Li + adsorption. The sustainable extraction of lithium from salt lake brines featuring high Mg 2+ /Li + ratios poses a severe technical bottleneck that limits the high-efficiency utilization of global lithium resources. Herein, a novel pore-confined AlLi-LDHs/SBA-15 adsorbent (SEI-AL/SBA-15-B) is rationally constructed via a solvent evaporation-induced method to break this limitation, which directs the exclusive and uniform growth of AlLi-LDH nanosheets inside the ordered mesochannels of SBA-15 rather than on the external surface. This architecture delivers three synergistic effects: (i) physical confinement suppresses nanosheet agglomeration, maximizing accessible active sites; (ii) interfacial Si-O-Al/Li covalent bonds reconstruct the local electronic structure, lowering the DFT-calculated adsorption energy of Li + (H 2 O) 4 from −1.61 eV (pristine AlLi-LDHs) to −3.06 eV; and (iii) a hydration-shell sieving effect, governed by the interplay of geometric radius and dehydration energy, efficiently excludes competing Mg 2+ , Na + and K + . The optimized adsorbent achieves a Li + uptake of 10.52 mg g −1 within 1 h in 800 mg/L LiCl solution (equilibrium capacity 12.11 mg g −1 at 4 h). Impressively, a capacity of 3.25 mg g −1 is preserved at an ultrahigh Mg 2+ /Li + mass ratio (474.6), which surpasses most reported AlLi-LDHs adsorbents. Normalization to the active LDH mass shows that SEI-AL/SBA-15-B exhibits a 2.85-fold higher capacity than pristine AlLi-LDHs, proving that the enhanced performance originates from improved active-site utilization rather than higher LDH loading. The adsorbent also demonstrates excellent stability over eight adsorption–desorption cycles. This work establishes mesopore confinement engineering as a powerful platform to overcome the inherent limitations of layered double hydroxide adsorbents, enabling sustainable lithium extraction from high Mg 2+ /Li + ratio salt lake brines. AlLi-LDHs were confined within SBA-15 mesopores by solvent evaporation-induced method to form SEI-AL/SBA-15 composite adsorbent. The mesoporous confinement effect suppresses the agglomeration of AlLi-LDHs, reconstructs the Si-O-Al/Li interfacial electronic structure to enhance electrostatic adsorption and coordination bonding capability, and reinforces size sieving by blocking large-sized competing hydrated ions. These synergistic effects enable SEI-AL/SBA-15-B high lithium adsorption capacity and ultrahigh selectivity in brine. Download: Download high-res image (140KB) Download: Download full-size image

Dry Reforming of Methane on Ni/SBA-15 Catalysts Prepared by Citrate-Assisted Impregnation: Effect of Various pH Values of the Preparation Solution on Structure and Catalytic Properties

Shanshan Duan,Zhonghua Lu,Yongkang Lv

The dry reforming of methane (DRM) is a kind of technology used for achieving resource utilization. In this paper, different Ni/SBA-15 catalysts were prepared by adjusting the pH of the impregnation solution and applying it during the DRM reaction. The relationship between the structure and catalytic performance of the catalyst was analyzed by characterization methods such as BET, XRD, H2-TPR, H2-TPD, XPS, TG, and Raman. The research results indicated that the dispersion of the catalyst’s active components could be regulated by changing the pH value of the impregnation solution. Among them, the Ni/SBA-15-2 catalyst exhibits good metal dispersion, and significantly enhances the activity of the catalyst. In addition, it also has strong CO2adsorption capacity, which improves the stability of the catalyst. At 700 °C, the conversions of CH4and CO2of the catalyst are 51% and 60%, respectively.

Fabrication of (amino)thiol chelating agents on SBA-15 and MCM-41 and applications in the extraction of Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cr(VI) cations from aqueous solutions

Maqinana Siphosethu,Kowenje Chrispin B. O.,Ojwach Stephen O.

Reactions of N 1 ,N 3 -bis(2-mercaptoethyl)isophthalamide with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (3-APTES) afforded the the corresponding Schiff base chelating ligand, (1Z,3Z)-N 1 ,N 3 -bis(2-mercaptoethyl)-N' 1 ,N' 3 bis(3(triethoxysilyl)propyl) isophthalimidamide ( L1 ) in high yields. Subsequent immobilization of L1 on mesoporous silica supports (SBA-15 and MCM-41) following a divergent method produced the respective fabricated L1@SBA-15 and L1@MCM-41 materials. Characterization of the fabricated chelating agents was accomplished using SEM, TEM, EDX, BET, PXRD, FT-IR, and TGA-DTA/DSC techniques. The fabricated materials were used as adsorbents for the removal of Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cr(VI) metal ions from water. Both the L1@SBA-15 and L1@MCM-41 materials demonstrated high extraction efficiencies for Cd(II) and Pb(II) cations, achieving over 98% and 97% removal, respectively, across a broad pH range (3–9). For Cr(VI) anions, relatively lower optimal extraction efficiencies of 67% and 77% were recorded between pH 3–12, for L1@SBA-15 and L1@MCM-41 , adsorbents, respectively. Faster extraction kinetics were observed for Cd(II) and Pb(II) cations, with over 94% removal achieved within 30 min, even at low initial metal concentrations (5 ppm) and adsorbent dosages (10 mg). Kinetic modelling showed that the adsorption process followed a pseudo -second-order kinetics, with high correlation coefficients (R 2 ) for Cd(II), Pb(II), and Cr(VI) of 0.97573, 0.97348, and 0.91017 using L1@MCM-41 , and 0.9754, 0.97089, and 0.89411 using L1@SBA-15 , respectively. Equilibrium data best fitted the Freundlich isotherm model, with R 2 values of 0.97952, 0.99892, and 0.97374 for L1@SBA-15 and 0.99879, 0.99999, and 0.90923 for L1@MCM-41 , corresponding to Cd(II), Pb(II), and Cr(VI), respectively. In competitive metal ion systems, the extraction selectivity followed the order Cd(II) > Pb(II) > Cr(VI), with L1@SBA-15 exhibiting superior overall performance compared to L1@MCM-41 . The extraction mechanism was postulated to occur through the coordination of the metal ions to the nitrogen/sulfur donor atoms in the chelating agents, consistent with the hard and soft acid and base (HSAB) principle. Furthermore, L1@MCM-41 demonstrated notable regeneration potential, retaining Cr(VI) extraction efficiencies over four successive cycles. Graphical

D-limonene as an alternative for the extraction and purification of nuciferine from lotus leaf via multi-stage vortex assisted two-phase solvent extraction integrated with solid phase extraction using mesoporous material SBA-15 as adsorbent

Jiahuan Xu,Lijin Peng,Jianbo Chu,Jing Shi,Qinmin Cui,Qiyuan Shi

This work aims to resolve the environmental pollution caused by petroleum ether in the production of pure nuciferine from lotus leaf by applying bio-based solvent (D-limonene) and green solvent (ethyl acetate). Some obvious advantages were observed, over 97% of nuciferine could be extracted by vortex assisted two-phase solvent extraction based on multi-stage strategy (MS-VTSE), over 90% of nuciferine could be recovered by solid phase extraction (SPE), and over 97% of nuciferine could be obtained by pH-dependent liquid-liquid extraction (pH-LLE). It follows that the newly developed method can not only avoid the use of petroleum ether, but also increase the yield of the whole process by 14% (57%) in comparing with the result of the original one (50%) reported in our previous study. As D-limonene could by recycled conveniently, solvents replacement has little effect on the cost of production. In a word, the newly proposed method has advantages in environmental protection and solvent saving, thus, is fitting for the green and low-cost production of pure nuciferine from lotus leaf.

Synthesis of Ordered Mesoporous Silica with Nonionic Surfactant/Anionic Polyelectrolyte as Template under Near-Neutral pH Conditions

Jiawei Liu,Guo Du,Tiehong Chen

Ordered mesoporous silica is widely used in catalysis, adsorption, and biomedicine, among which SBA-15 (Santa Barbara Amorphous-15) is one of the most widely studied. However, the synthesis of SBA-15 often requires strong acid (hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid), which will not only corrode industrial equipment but also pollute the environment with the wastewater containing strong acid and halogen (sulfur). Here, we demonstrate a green synthetic strategy for SBA-15 under weakly acidic conditions through an anionic assembly route. With the assistance of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APMS), the pH value of the synthesis system can be increased to 4–5, which is a mild near-neutral condition. In addition, halogen-free synthesis using organic acids is also achieved. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and N2 sorption characterizations show that the obtained SBA-15 has good texture properties, with a specific surface area of 430–500 m2/g and ordered 6–8 nm mesopores, which is similar to SBA-15 synthesized in traditional strong acid. This strategy provides a facile and environmentally friendly route for the large-scale production of ordered mesoporous materials.
