Trace detection of nitroaromatic explosives such as 2,6-dinitrotoluene (2,6-DNT) and trinitrotoluene (TNT) is of great significance in the fields of homeland security, anti-terrorism monitoring and environmental governance. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has become a research hotspot in the field of chemical sensing owing to its unique ‘fingerprint identification’ capacity and high detection sensitivity. Nitroaromatic molecule analytes exhibit weak binding affinity toward conventional citrate-stabilized Ag NPs, which limits the effective adsorption of target molecules to the Ag NPs surface. These conventional substrates only enable detection of 2,6-DNT and TNT at concentrations as high as 10 −1 M and 10 −2 M, respectively. In this study, a surface regulation strategy is proposed by pretreatment highly concentrated Ag NPs with KI to fabricate a high-performance SERS sensing platform on a low-cost aluminum foil substrate. Benefiting from iodide-mediated surface modulation, the detection performance is greatly improved, with distinct characteristic Raman peaks of 2,6-DNT observable at an ultralow concentration of 10 −10 M. I − can be used as a cleaning agent to effectively remove citrate from Ag NPs surface and provide abundant active sites for the analytes adsorption. In addition, the AgI shell formed on Ag NPs surface by reaction of I − and Ag + can provide additional chemical enhancement through charge transfer mechanism. This strategy enables highly sensitive detection of nitroaromatic explosives and provides a very competitive solution for the monitoring of trace explosives in the field of public safety.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) provides ultrasensitive molecular fingerprinting, but conventional static SERS substrates are often limited by inefficient analyte capture and poor spatial controllability. Herein, we report a light-driven micromotor SERS detector based on silver-coated polystyrene microspheres (Ag@PS) for active, localized, and rapid biochemical sensing. The Ag@PS micromotors were fabricated through an electroless silver-plating strategy, forming a dense nanoparticle-like silver shell that provides abundant plasmonic hotspots for SERS enhancement. Under light irradiation, the micromotors exhibited reversible “on–off” locomotion, positive phototaxis, and pronounced light-induced clustering. The micromotors reached an average velocity of approximately 6 μm s⁻ 1 under 1.2 mW cm⁻ 2 irradiation and could be remotely guided toward target regions by moving the light spot. Benefiting from light-directed accumulation and intimate probe–analyte contact, the Ag@PS micromotor clusters enabled sensitive SERS detection of rhodamine 6G down to 10⁻⁸ M with good signal reproducibility. Furthermore, the platform achieved label-free in situ Raman detection of diverse microorganisms, including Paramecium , Spirogyra , Euglena , and Marimo , using handheld Raman systems. This work demonstrates a simple and programmable light-responsive micromotor SERS probe for active target enrichment and on-site biological analysis, offering a promising strategy for portable, real-time, and spatially controlled SERS detection. Modified PDMS with APTES and n-hexane enables in-situ self-assembly of AuNPs. • 2D MXene overlayer on AuNPs boosts SERS sensitivity and ensures sensor stability. • The flexible MXene/Au/PDMS sensor yields a high enhancement factor of 6.5 × 10 4 . • The SERS platform achieves LODs of 10 −10 g mL −1 (TBZ) and 2.25 × 10 −10 M (TC). • Swab-sampling enables rapid detection of pesticide residues on fruit surfaces. The overuse of pesticides and antibiotics in agriculture poses significant risks to food safety and human health, necessitating rapid and sensitive detection methods. This study develops a novel, flexible Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERSa) platform by integrating gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and 2D MXene nanosheets on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix for the ultra-sensitive trace detection of pesticide residues. To simplify conventional fabrication methods, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and n-hexane were directly incorporated into the PDMS prepolymer, enabling the uniform in-situ self-assembly of AuNPs via straightforward immersion in a chloroauric acid precursor. The subsequent addition of layered MXene nanosheets not only boosted SERS sensitivity through synergistic enhancement but also functioned as a protective barrier to ensure superior substrate stability. The optimized MXene/Au/PDMS sensor demonstrated exceptional SERS performance, achieving a high Enhancement Factor (EF) of 6.5 × 10 4 . Utilizing a simple swab-sampling technique, the flexible substrate effectively collected and identified trace residues directly from apple and cherry tomato surfaces. The platform achieved highly sensitive quantitative analysis, with limits of detection (LOD) reaching 10 −10 M for TBZ and tetracycline. Additionally, the sensor exhibited consistent large-scale spatial reproducibility and maintained robust environmental stability over a one-month storage period. These results confirm that the proposed flexible SERS substrate is a reliable and practical tool for the rapid, on-site monitoring of food safety hazards. Aromatic organic pollutants pose severe risks to aquatic ecosystems and call for analytical strategies that couple trace-level detection with efficient in situ degradation. Here, we report a plasmonic nanozyme composed of Ag nanoparticles on metal-organic framework-derived Fe 2 P (Ag@Fe 2 P/C), in which the Ag-Fe 2 P heterointerface integrates surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing with Fenton-like oxidation. Ag@Fe 2 P/C enabled ultrasensitive, quantitative SERS detection of crystal violet, 4-nitrophenol, and bisphenol A, with limits of detection of 10⁻ 10 –10⁻ 8 M, correlation coefficients R 2 above 0.95, and relative standard deviations below 5%. Under mild H 2 O 2 treatment, Ag@Fe 2 P/C completely degraded crystal violet within 10 min and 4-nitrophenol and bisphenol A within 30 min, and fully recovered its initial SERS response over six regeneration cycles. Density functional theory calculations show that the Ag-Fe 2 P heterointerface shifts the d band of Fe sites and enhances interfacial electron transfer, which in turn accelerates the Fe 2 ⁺/Fe 3 ⁺ redox cycle and promotes H 2 O 2 activation into hydroxyl radicals that remove adsorbed pollutants and regenerate SERS-active sites. By bridging plasmonic enhancement with enzyme-mimetic catalysis through interface engineering, this work provides a promising strategy to enable in situ SERS monitoring and degradation of representative aromatic organic pollutants.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has achieved extensive applications through carefully engineered plasmonic metasurfaces. Disordered plasmonic metasurfaces are widely used for SERS applications due to their simple fabrication and low cost. However, their poor spatial uniformity usually causes severe signal fluctuations, degrading the repeatability and robustness of SERS measurements. We propose an order-in-disorder metasurface to address this challenge. The design relies on regulating the degree of disorder by introducing a controlled level of ordered features, facilitating the orderly manipulation of photonic Anderson localization. As a representative proof-of-concept example, we fabricate a flexible plasmonic nanoflower-like metasurface by a cost-effective process and each nanoflower contains randomly distributed nanosheets. Compared with the traditional disordered metasurface, it shows competitive SERS signal intensities while dramatically reducing the relative standard deviation (RSD). In detecting trace pesticide residues on fruit surfaces, this metasurface exhibits a low RSD. The enhanced robustness stems from the strong electromagnetic coupling between short-range disordered states of Anderson localization and long-range ordered plasmonic polaritons. The disordered states provide great near-field enhancement, while the ordered mode manipulates hotspot uniformity. This scheme supports the development of a low-cost, high-repeatability, versatile SERS metasurface, and will inspire more practical agriculture and supply chain applications.

The sensitivity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates critically depends on the efficient spatial coupling between high-density electromagnetic “hotspots” and target molecules. Traditional SERS substrates confine hotspots to zero-dimensional points, one-dimensional lines, or two-dimensional planes, which limits their overlap with the three-dimensional (3D) laser focal volume. In this work, we demonstrate a Cassie-state superhydrophobic Si nanorod platform fabricated on a 4-in. wafer via reactive ion etching and self-assembly of 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctyltrichlorosilane. By optimizing the bullet-like nanorod morphologies and employing a heating-assisted evaporation process, our platform enables uniform vertical assembly of urchin-like Au nanoparticles into 3D architectures, leading to enhanced spatial overlap between the hotspots and the laser depth of focus. Our platform supports stable contact angle evaporation and uniform vertical nanoparticle aggregation. The resulting SERS substrate achieves detection limits of 8.9 × 10 −14 M for rhodamine 6G and 8.9 × 10 −12 M for malachite green, while effectively suppressing coffee-ring effects. This scalable strategy offers a pathway toward reproducible and ultrasensitive SERS detection through 3D hotspot engineering.

GO/Ag SERS substrate was fabricated via self-assembly of Ag NPs and graphene oxide. • GO/Ag SERS composite fiber substrate achieves 10 −11 M visual detection limit for 4-ATP and MG. • GO/Ag SERS substrate shows high uniformity, stability and 10.2% attenuation in 15 days. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has emerged as a powerful technique for ultrasensitive molecular detection. This study develops a SERS substrate based on graphene oxide‑silver (Ag/GO) composite optical fibers, enabling highly sensitive molecular detection. The graphene oxide layer promotes target molecule adsorption through π-π stacking interactions and surface oxygen functional groups, while providing antioxidant protection for silver nanoparticles. Performance characterization using 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) demonstrated excellent repeatability, uniformity, and temporal stability. In addition, the visual detection limit of 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) and malachite green (MG) on the fiber optic substrate reaches 10 −11 mol/L. Based on the criterion of signal-to-noise ratio S/N ≥ 3, the quantitative detection limits of the two are 1.93 × 10 −12 mol/L (4-ATP) and 3.8 × 10 −12 mol/L (MG), respectively. These results indicate the application potential of the Ag/GO-functionalized optical fiber SERS substrate in trace analysis. Environmental implication This study employs an Ag/GO composite fiber SERS substrate for the in-situ and rapid detection of malachite green (MG) and 4-ATP in water, without requiring large amounts of organic reagents or causing secondary pollution. MG and 4-ATP have high toxic, resistant to degradation, and prone to bioaccumulation, posing risks to aquatic organisms and accumulating along the food chain. This SERS substrate provides a green approach for early warning of trace pollutants in water environments, contributing to the safeguarding of water ecological security and pollution control. Optimizing the morphology and structure of noble metal nanomaterials is critical for the design of high-performance surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates for trace analyte detection. A plasmon-tunable SERS platform consisting of AuAg alloy nanostars anchored on a hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix was developed, which combined the chemical stability of Au and the strong localized surface plasmon resonance of Ag. AuAg alloy nanostars with sharp tips were synthesized via a galvanic replacement reaction, in which the precise modulation of Ag seed concentration enabled a morphological evolution from solid to hollow nanostructures. The optimized AuAg-3 nanostars exhibited the highest SERS response due to a dual synergistic mechanism: strong electromagnetic enhancement at the sharp branched tips and additional plasmonic enhancement from the hollow cavity through light scattering and trapping, which increased the optical path length and excitation efficiency. Furthermore, these nanostars were transferred onto a flexible PDMS film through interfacial self-assembly. The resulting hydrophobic PDMS-AuAg-3 substrate synergistically combined the strong electromagnetic enhancement from the nanostars with efficient analyte enrichment driven by the hydrophobic surface, achieving an ultra-low detection limit of 2.4 × 10−10M for methylene blue (MB). This strategy effectively balances high sensitivity and excellent reproducibility, offering a robust pathway for the development of next-generation flexible SERS sensors.

Rapid and sensitive detection of cortisol, which is essential for diagnosing adrenal and stress-related disorders, has been achieved through the development of a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor. This sensor integrates molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) with silver core-gold shell nanoparticles (Ag@AuNPs) to provide a selective and sensitive means of cortisol detection. By leveraging the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect, the sensor is able to amplify SERS signals, while the MIPs offer specific recognition sites for cortisol. Fabricated using a straightforward two-step process that involves chronoamperometry and self-polymerization, the Ag@AuNPs functionalized with MIP (Ag@Au/MIP) sensor is both easy to prepare and highly reproducible. The Ag@AuNPs increases the effective surface area, optimizing the electromagnetic field and significantly boosting the sensor's sensitivity. The sensor demonstrates a strong affinity for cortisol, exhibiting a linear detection range from 100 pM to 0.1 mM and a detection limit as low as 10 pM. Furthermore, it shows excellent specificity against potential interferences and maintains its stability and anti-interference ability in artificial saliva. By providing a rapid, cost-effective, and user-friendly platform for cortisol detection, this Ag@Au/MIP-based SERS sensor holds great promise for clinical diagnosis, health monitoring, and point-of-care testing applications.

Interleukins (IL) play a vital part in molecular recognition as well as immune response, and their excessive or inappropriate production can lead to inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases, etc., which are harmful to human physical and mental health. Thus, there is a pressing need to develop a strategy for the rapid and highly sensitive detection of such low concentration substances. In this study, we developed a Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) immunosensor for qualitative and quantitative analysis of multiple cytokines (IL-1, IL-4 and IL-6). Three Raman reporters were modified on gold nanoparticles and coupled with corresponding antibodies to form immunoprobes. The silver nanospace folded rods were prepared by tilted angle deposition technique, connected with antibodies to form an immunosensor. When the target antigen appeared on the immunosensor, it would specifically bind with the antibody to form a “sandwich” structure. Respectively, the detection limits of IL-6, IL-1 and IL-4 were 1.00 pg/mL, 0.93 pg/mL and 1.00 pg/mL. The three inflammatory factors were successfully distinguished and predicted by machine learning. In addition, we detected and calculated the recovery of IL-6 cytokines in saliva samples. The method can achieve quantitative detection and qualitative differentiation of target detectors in a wide concentration range. Meanwhile, it has the advantages of rapidity, simplicity and high specificity, which has a broad application prospect in biomedical field.

High-speed and accuracy identification of pathogens has become increasingly critical in both individual patient care and public health. Artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) biosensors enable simultaneous identification of multiple pathogens. However, there are still problems such as low accuracy and limited diversity in bacterial fingerprints. To this end, we present a novel multi-branch adaptive attention convolutional neural network (MBAA-CNN)-assisted paper-based SERS chip for prompt and reliable pathogen discrimination. In the approach, we employed a dual-function molecule 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (4-MPBA) to capture bacteria and enhance Raman spectra diversity, referring as 4-MPBA labeled mode (label mode). Meanwhile, we utilized the K -means algorithm to identify pathogens in the label mode, producing much higher accuracy compared to label-free mode ( n = 2000). Furthermore, we acquired 98.6 % accuracy at all pathogen species and 99.5 % accuracy at the antibiotic-resistant and sensitive strains ( n = 10,000) using MBAA-CNN. The superior performance of MBAA-CNN was further validated through comparisons with traditional machine learning models, particularly in terms of loss value, speed and accuracy. We envision the developed approach has potential for early culture-free diagnosis of pathogens and real-time monitoring of microbial contamination in water environment.
