The horseradish peroxidase (HRP) mediated synthesis of conducting polyaniline (PANI) was investigated in detail in the bicontinuous microemulsion stabilized by both sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) and dodecyl sulfobetaine (SB-12). The addition of zwitterionic surfactant SB-12 not only reduces the phase inversion temperature of the anionic surfactant AOT stabilized microemulsion, but also enhances the catalytic performance of the solubilized HRP. Compared with the previously reported AOT/SDS stabilized bicontinuous microemulsion, the present AOT/SB-12 stabilized bicontinuous microemulsion is much more suitable for the expression of the catalytic activity of HRP; moreover, the conductivity of the resulting PANI improves greatly (a 15-fold increase in conductivity). The present results indicate further that the catalytic activity of HRP and its stability are crucial for the biosynthesis of PANI in bicontinuous microemulsions. To understand the underlying mechanism of the medium effects, electron spin resonance (ESR), UV–vis-NIR and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) spectroscopies were used to investigate the effects of the oil-to-water ratio ( α ) and the surfactant concentration ( γ ) of the present bicontinuous microemulsion on the conductivity of resulting PANI. Results show that the bicontinuous microemulsion stabilized by both AOT and SB-12 still has a template role in the biosynthesis of PANI and the PANI conductivity is mainly determined by the microstructure of the template and by the microstructure-dependent activity and stability of the solubilized HRP. Lower α and γ values are beneficial to the enzymatic synthesis of high-quality PANI. The present study is of great help not only to deepen the understanding of the template role of anionic surfactant aggregates in the biosynthesis of conducting PANI, but also to develop new strategies for the biosynthesis of high quality PANI.

Model aqueous solutions of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA, 100 mg L−1) were electro-oxidized in a homemade container. The electrocatalytic behavior and anodic performance of Ti/SnO2–Sb/Yb–PbO2, Ti/SnO2–Sb–PbO2 and Ti/SnO2–Sb–Yb anodes in sodium electrolytes were compared. The SnO2–Sb/Yb–PbO2 anode demonstrated better electrocatalytic performance compared with the SnO2–Sb–PbO2 and SnO2–Sb–Yb electrodes in terms of both degradation and defluorination. Then a systematic experimental study was designed as follows to analyze the influencing factors: initial concentration of PFOA (10 mg L−1 to 200 mg L−1), current density (1 mA cm−2 to 40 mA cm−2), initial pH value (3 to 11) and electrode distance (5 mm to 20 mm). After a 150 min electrolysis, the optimum reaction conditions were obtained and the degradation and defluorination ratios reached 95.11 ± 3.9% and 75.7 ± 2.8%, respectively. Under the optimum conditions, the degradation of PFOA followed pseudo-first-order kinetics (0.0193 min−1) and the degradation half-life was 35.9 min. The produced F− was measured using a fluoride ion selective electrode, whereas the intermediate PFCAs with short-chain lengths were measured using HPLC-MS. A detailed degradation pathway was proposed in this study by analyzing the intermediates and the recovery of fluoride.

The broad application of highly electrocatalytic SnO2–Sb electrodes for wastewater treatment is limited by their short service lifetime. Herein, a novel substrate structure, tubular porous titanium, was applied to prepare a TiO2-NT/SnO2–Sb electrode, which could greatly improve the stability of the electrode for electrochemical oxidation process. Based on the analysis conducted using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), linked with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), it was demonstrated that a solid solution between Sn and Sb presented a smooth surface of the tubular porous electrode. The crystalline structure and chemical composition of the electrode coating are determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Accelerated service life test reveals that under the 0.2 A cm−2 current density in a 0.5 M H2SO4 solution, the TiO2-NT/SnO2–Sb tubular porous electrode has the longest accelerated service lifetime of 68.9 h, which is 10.9 times that of the TiO2-NT/SnO2–Sb plate electrode. Cyclic voltammetry curves (CVs) and linear sweep voltammetry curves (LSVs) reveal the enhanced electroactive surface area and higher oxygen evolution potential (OEP = 1.85 V vs. Ag/AgCl) of the electrode. Moreover, the TiO2-NT/SnO2–Sb tubular porous electrode has the larger outer voltammetric charge q*. During the electrochemical oxidation of pyrimidine, the tubular system constructed using the TiO2-NT/SnO2–Sb tubular porous electrode as the anode also exhibited best electrocatalytic performance, and 97.9% pyridimine removal efficiency and 79.4% COD removal efficiency at 6 h were achieved.

Sb nanoparticles encapsulated in 1-D N-doped porous carbon (denoted as Sb/NPC) have been fabricated by an in situ nanoconfined replacement reaction between SbCl3 and the intermediate Ni/NPC, in which Ni/NPC was obtained by annealing the hydrothermally synthesized nickel–nitrilotriacetic acid (Ni–NTA) precursor in an argon atmosphere. The Sb nanoparticles with a size of 10–20 nm were uniformly encapsulated in the 1-D N-doped porous carbon scaffolds. When the Sb/NPC composite was applied as an anode material in the batteries, it exhibited a high reversible capacity of 556 mA h g−1 at 200 mA g−1 after 100 cycles for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) and a reversible capacity of 400.9 mA h g−1 at 100 mA g−1 after 100 cycles for Na-ion batteries (NIBs). Such enhanced electrochemical performance of the designed Sb/NPC can be attributed to the synergistic effect between uniformly dispersed Sb nanoparticles and the 1-D N-doped porous carbon matrices.

The high-voltage spinel LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) is a promising cathode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its high energy and power densities, excellent thermal stability, low cost, and environmental benignity. However, the presence of Mn 3+ induces Jahn─Teller (J─T) distortion, leading to Mn─O bond elongation, lattice stress, and degradation of both structural and electrochemical stability during cycling. To address this,a bond-length engineering strategy is proposed by co-doping Fe at the Mn 16d sites and Sb at the vacant 16c positions to suppress the J─T effect and stabilize the crystal structure. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the Mn─O bond regulation strategy effectively mitigates MnO 6 octahedral distortion, reduces phase transitions, and enhances structural robustness. Moreover, Sb incorporation expands the lattice, facilitating Li + diffusion. As a result, the optimized FeSb-LNMO delivers remarkable electrochemical performance, retaining 98% of its initial capacity after 200 cycles at 1C, and achieving 85.6% capacity retention over 1000 cycles at 5C. This work introduces a novel bond-length engineering approach via multi-site doping to overcome degradation in high-voltage LNMO, enabling ultra-fast charging and long-term cycling stability.

Grain boundary (GB) engineering includes grain size and GB segregation. Grain size has been proven to affect the electrical properties of Mg3(Sb, Bi)2 at low temperatures. However, the formation mechanism of GB segregation and what kind of GB segregation is beneficial to the performance are still unclear. Here, the Ga/Bi cosegregation at GBs and Mg segregation within grains optimize the transport of electrons and phonons simultaneously. Ga/Bi cosegregation promotes the formation of Janus-like structures due to the diverse ordering tendencies of liquid Mg3Sb2 and Mg3Bi2 and the absence of a solid solution of Ga/Bi. The Janus-like structure significantly reduces the room-temperature lattice thermal conductivity by introducing diverse microdefects. Meanwhile, a coherent interface between the nano Mg segregation region and the matrix is formed, which reduces the thermal conductivity without affecting the carrier transport. Furthermore, the band structure calculations show that Ga doping introduces the resonance level, increasing the Seebeck coefficient. Finally, the lattice thermal conductivity reaches ∼0.4 W m–1 K–1, and a high average ZT of 1.21 between 323 and ∼773 K is achieved for Mg3.2Y0.02Ga0.03Sb1.5Bi0.5. This work provides guidance for improving the thermoelectric performance via designing cosegregation.

Electrocatalytic antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO) anodes are promising for wastewater treatment due to their high activity and low material cost. Nevertheless, the practical application is hindered by two-dimensional SnO2 electrodes with small active area, low mass transfer rates, and poor adhesion of the active layer and the substrate. In this study, a porous titanium foam-based ATO (TF@ATO) anode was successfully constructed by the solvothermal method, exhibiting good electrochemical performance and structural stability. Compared to the plate SnO2 electrodes, the electroactive surface area of 3D TF@ATO anode is increased by ∼6 times, and the accelerated service life is improved by ∼35 times. In the degradation of model rhodamine B (RhB) effluents (50 mg/L), the porous TF@ATO anode demonstrates the quicker decolorization rate (98.52%) and lower specific energy consumption (3.34 kWh/m3/order) than that of the conditional plate anode within 120 min at a current of 10 mA/cm2. More importantly, the porous Ti-based electrode exhibited effective degradation in high-concentration (1000 mg/L) dye wastewater, which indicates that the prepared electrodes had potential for engineering application. Finally, the possible degradation pathways were proposed based on high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis, suggesting a feasible strategy toward efficient and deep mineralization of dye-containing wastewater.

In order to realize the good selective removal of Sb(III) from the multi-ions coexisting water, Sb(III)-imprinted hyperbranched polyamide–functionalized sodium alginate (IIPSA) microspheres were successfully prepared. IIPSA microspheres were characterised via FT-IR and SEM-EDS. The selective adsorption performances and reusability of IIPSA microspheres were investigated. Results showed that the optimum grafting conditions were the dosage of HA 1 g at 40 °C for 1 h and the optimum ion-imprinted conditions were the dosage of 2 wt % glutaraldehyde 100 mL at 60 °C for 2 h. Compared with non-imprinted microsphere, the maximum adsorption capacity of IIPSA microsphere improved by 52% and IIPSA microsphere had better selectivity for the removal of Sb(III) from solutions containing other ions. The adsorption mechanisms conformed to a monolayer adsorption dominated by chemical interactions with a spontaneous exothermic process. After 8 adsorption-desorption, the adsorption capacity of IIPSA microspheres retained more than 90%, and the Sb(III) selectivity was relatively stable.

As expected, a desired electrochemical energy storage system can simultaneously combine the low-cost raw materials with ultra-high energy density and no performance degradation characteristics. Here, we use liquid lithium as the anode, solid antimony as the cathode, molten LiF–LiCl–LiBr (or molten LiF–LiCl) as the electrolyte and test the battery at 550 °C. It can provide the energy density as high as 421.6 Wh kg −1 , while the energy storage cost is only 42.4 $ kWh −1 . More importantly, due to the self-healing characteristic of the pure antimony electrode, no capacity fading is observed during 470 cycles. Therefore, with all the merits, the Li||Sb liquid metal battery has become a competitive choice in the field of grid-level energy storage.

The band degeneracy thus thermoelectric performance of (Fe, Co)Sb 3 based p -type skutterudites can be well modulated by adjusting Co/Fe ratio. Combining systematic experiments and density function theory (DFT) calculations, we revealed in this work that the variation of Co/Fe ratio could result in complicated and mutually coupled effects on the individual thermoelectric parameters (band degeneracy, band gap, Fermi level , filling limit of fillers, phonon spectrum, etc.) and that using Co/Fe ratio to improve the overall thermoelectric figure of merit is nontrivial. We eventually found that the optimal Co/Fe ratio for Mm (Misch metal) filled (Fe, Co)Sb 3 lies at 1.3:2.7, which is somewhat off the Co/Fe = 1:3 point where the largest valence band degeneracy appears. Extra Sb was then introduced to compensate Sb volatilization for improved electrical transport performance. An overall peak figure of merit ZT max of 1.06 was eventually achieved in the sample Mm 0.8 Fe 2.7 Co 1.3 Sb 12.60 , which is among the highest ones for all reported (Fe, Co)Sb 3 based p -type skutterudites so far.

Copper doping represents the most established technological process in the current manufacturing of CdTe solar cells and modules. However, its self-compensation effect and rapid diffusion at junction locations impose limitations on both the device efficiency and long-term stability. In this study, a Cu2Sb thin film with controllable composition and thickness was synthesized on the CdTe surface via a substitution reaction, serving as the p-type doping source for the device. Comparative investigations were conducted to evaluate the effects of pure Cu, pure Sb, and Cu–Sb alloyed dopants on the photoelectronic performance of CdTe-based thin-film solar cells. Although pure Sb dopants exhibit inferior performance and cannot replace Cu as the primary dopant, they serve effectively as auxiliary dopants. Incorporating Sb into the Cu doping process increases the concentration threshold for device doping, thereby enhancing the device’s overall doping concentration. The optimized device achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) exceeding 18%. Furthermore, appropriate Sb incorporation significantly improved device stability, maintaining 90% of the initial PCE after 50 days of normal operation. These results demonstrate that codoping with Cu and Sb via Cu2Sb provides a promising route for fabricating high-efficiency and highly stable CdTe thin-film solar cells and modules.

The annual influx of antimony (Sb) into the environment due to the widespread use of Sb compounds in industry and agriculture has become of global concern. Herein, a functional nanomaterial composite based on loading bimetallic iron/nickel nanoparticles on reduced graphene oxide (rGO-Fe/Ni) was initially prepared in a one-step phytogenic synthesis using a green tea extract. Subsequently, when applied for Sb(III) removal, the removal efficiency of rGO-Fe/Ni reached 69.7% within 3 h at an initial Sb concentration of 1.0 mg·L −1 . Advanced materials characterization via scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that Sb(III) was initially adsorbed onto the surface of rGO and then oxidized to Sb(V). This result was also supported by adsorption isotherm, kinetics, and thermodynamic analysis. These studies revealed that the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic, following a Langmuir adsorption model with pseudo-second-order kinetics and allowed a Sb(III) removal mechanism based on adsorption and catalytic oxidation to be proposed. Furthermore, when rGO-Fe/Ni was practically used to remove Sb(III) in groundwater a 95.7% removal efficiency was obtained at 1 mg·L −1 Sb(III), thus successfully demonstrating that rGO-Fe/Ni has significant potential for the practical remediation of Sb contaminated groundwater.
