The successful deployment of proton-exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs) relies on the development of an active and durable electrocatalyst for the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Although rutile IrO2 shows excellent durability due to its stable crystal structure, it suffers from unsatisfactory activity. Here, we report a partial Sn substitution strategy to trigger lattice oxygen reactivity toward boosted OER. The similar crystal structures of IrO2 and SnO2 promote uniform incorporation of Sn into the lattice of IrO2, thus retaining the durability of the pristine rutile phase. More importantly, the electron transfer from Ir to Sn through the local structure of Ir–O–Sn was found to enhance the Ir–O bond covalency, which in turn activated the lattice oxygen to participate in OER. The enhanced lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) was further verified by in situ 18O isotope labeling in situ differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy (DEMS). Due to these attributes, the as-designed Ir0.83Sn0.17O2 catalyst showed significantly improved performance, with an overpotential of only 284 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm–2, 38 mV lower than that of the commercial IrO2. In addition, the mass activity of the Ir0.83Sn0.17O2 catalyst reaches as high as 130 A gIr–1 at 1.55 V, which is 2.58 times higher than that of commercial IrO2. Beyond that, the intrinsic stability of the rutile phase endows the Ir0.83Sn0.17O2 catalyst with excellent operational durability. This work provides a novel insight into the improvement of catalyst activity and inspires the design of highly active and stable OER catalysts.

In this study, Sn–Bi–MOF/Ti 3 C 2 heterojunction catalysts were prepared using the solvothermal method, and their photocatalytic ability to degrade and mineralize tetracycline (TC) under illumination was investigated. After 90 min of photocatalysis, the pollutant had a degradation efficiency of 96.2% and a mineralization rate of 45.5%. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were analyzed using various methods. The effects of the solution pH, coexisting anions, and water quality on the catalyst performance were investigated. ·O 2 − and h + are the main active substances in the photocatalytic mechanism, as demonstrated by free-radical quenching experiments and EPR tests. The degradation of TC and the intermediates produced were determined using 3D fluorescence and LC-MS. The photocatalytic mechanism of Sn–Bi–MOF/Ti 3 C 2 was proposed based on free radical determination and electrochemical tests. The formation of the Schottky junction accelerated the transfer of electrons to Ti 3 C 2 and improved the separation of charges, which led to the generation of free radicals. Sn–Bi–MOF/Ti 3 C 2 still exhibited good catalytic ability after four cycles of the experiments, and the XRD patterns before and after the reaction were consistent, which illustrates that the composite structure was stable. Overall, Sn–Bi–MOF/Ti 3 C 2 has promising applications in the photocatalytic removal of refractory pollutants.

2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a potential substitute of petroleum-based terephthalic acid to manufacture polymer. The selective aerobic oxidation of renewable 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to FDCA is a promising and appealing route for establishing sustainable and environmentally friendly chemical process. Au catalysts have exhibited exceptional catalytic performances for this highly anticipated chemical transformation, where the used support intensively impacts the catalytic productivity from the standpoint of metal-support and guest organic-support interactions. Herein, Sn-Beta zeolite was straightforward and rapidly synthesized via structural reconstruction without the auxiliary of any solvents, which was adopted as support for Au catalyst to construct bifunctional catalysts. As for Au/Sn-Beta sample, Lewis acid sites were related to Sn 4+ ions in the zeolite framework, while electronic properties and particle size of Au species were capable of being modulated by Au dosages. In addition, charge transfer from Au species to framework Sn 4+ ions resulted in the formation of Au δ+ species. Au/Sn-Beta catalyst with metal-Lewis acid cooperative active sites showed unique catalytic productivity of FDCA product in the aerobic oxidation of HMF to FDCA, whose catalytic performance was correlated with Lewis acid amounts as well as geometric and electronic effect of Au particle. Reaction mechanism analysis revealed the pathway and concrete step that Lewis acid site functioned. The aim is to provide some guidance for constructing a task-specific multifunctional supported catalyst from the view of support-enhanced effect for the catalytic conversion of biomass resource with multi-functional-groups.

Combining the core-shell structure with the optimization of surface composition and structure in the shell is a fantastic strategy to enhance the electrocatalytic performances. Here, we synthesized trimetallic Au@PtxSny core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) with tunable composition and structure of Pt-Sn alloyed shells. Impressively, the Au@PtSn core-shell NPs with hexagonal PtSn alloyed shells exhibited the highest mass activity and specific activity toward ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in alkaline electrolyte, which are 13.0 and 12.7 times higher than those of the commercial Pt/C. In addition, the Au@PtSn core-shell NPs displayed the best stability compared to commercial Pt/C, with only 44.8% loss vs. 86.8% loss in mass activity after 1,000 s due to the stronger anti-poisoning ability for reaction intermediates. The theory calculations reveal that the introduction of Au core and alloying Pt with Sn both endow Pt with an appropriate d-band center, and thus effectively boosting the EOR activity.

In this work, the tinplate with 0.5 g·m−2 tin coating mass was prepared in order to improve the economic benefit for food packaging field. We studied this low Sn-coated steel surface state and developed a process combined Mo-Mn-Al-P coating based on its special structure. By Taguchi techniques optimization, this chromium-free multi-elements coating has excellent corrosion resistance and adhesion with organic coatings, would be a hopefully replacing traditional chromate passivation treatment on tinplate with low tin coating mass.

The solid-state batteries have received widespread attention due to their excellent stability and safety, however, the low ionic conductivity and weak interface contact always restricted its performance. In this work, we propose an in situ thermally cross-linked and solidified polymer electrolyte with polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) as scaffold in which succinonitrile (SN) and lithium bis-trifluoromethanesulfonimide (LiTFSI) were further introduced to improve the ionic conductivity. Herein, the composite gel was served as not only solid-solid interface material but also solid-state electrolyte. Different with conventional polymer gels, the solvent evaporation could not happen for this composite material during the solidification process, and therefore resulting in good interface contact without inside bubbles. We further present the investigation on transport principle of Li+ in the solid-state electrolyte and the effect of molecular chain on ionic conductivity. The conductivity of the solid-state electrolyte can reach 1.76 × 10−4 S cm−1 at room temperature without any assistance of liquid electrolytes, which is attributed to the short molecular chain of PEGDA. Electrochemical window of the solid-state electrolyte can reach 5.2 V after cross-linking treatment. And the lithium-oxygen battery using this solid-state electrolyte can stably cycle for more than 1100 cycles with a current density of 200 mA g−1 and a limit capacity of 200 mAh g−1 at room temperature.

Phase change materials (PCMs) using metals/alloys have been concerned for medium temperature solar thermal storage and waste heat recovery. However, the PCMs may leak due to the solid-liquid phase change, which greatly limits the use of metallic PCMs. In this study, we report the synthesis of microencapsulated PCMs (MEPCMs) using metallic Sn as PCM core and a sol-gel coated SiO 2 as shell. The as-coated microcapsules are further undergone a high temperature heat treatment at oxygen/nitrogen atmosphere. Due to the self-repairing effect, the cracked microcapsules can be sealed and stabilized, thereby forming high stabilized MEPCMs over 100 cycles. The melting point and latent heat of the Sn@SiO 2 –O 2 microcapsules were around 233 °C and 56 J g -1 respectively, while the values were around 233 °C and 58 J g -1 for Sn@SiO 2 –N 2 microcapsules, similar to the theoretical values of metallic Sn. The successfully prepared Sn@SiO 2 MEPCMs could find wide applications in medium temperature thermal energy storage .

In this study, Sn@C composite was fabricated from ZnSn(OH) 6 through a green thermal calcination method. For the first time, this composite was used as a modifier on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to construct an electrochemical biosensor to detect acetaminophen (AC). The Sn@C sensor exhibited distinctly enhanced performance in electrochemical response to AC compared with bare GCE, GCE modified with Sn and GCE modified with graphene. The linear range is 0.2–100 μM and the limit of detection (LOD) is 0.020 μM based on DPV analysis. The excellent electrochemical behavior can be ascribed to the outstanding conductivity of metal Sn and carbon, and the strong adsorption of the carbon layer to AC. Most importantly, the chemical interaction between Sn and C through Sn-C bond facilitated the electron transfer process in the electrooxidation of AC. Finally, the Sn@C sensor was successfully applied in pharmaceutical samples and spiked serum samples to detect AC with satisfactory recoveries.

Natural Monascus yellow pigments (MYPs) have received considerable attention due to their great safety and biological activities, but their unsatisfactory color tonality and stability limit their applications. A novel encapsulate system for hydrophilic yellow pigments (HYPs) were investigated through stable ternary nanocomplexes using quercetin-Sn (II), bovine serum albumin (BSA), and chitosan (CS) in this work. Layer-by-layer assembly preparation of HYPs-loaded quercetin-Sn (II)-BSA-CS nanocomplexes were verified by fluorescence spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectra, and 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance. A hyperchromic effect on HYPs was obtained since their maximum ultraviolet absorption wavelength redshifted from 352 nm to 364 nm first due to the interaction with quercetin-Sn (II) and further redshifted to 408 nm due to ternary conjugation, greatly improved the color tonality and dye-uptake. The HYPs-loaded nanocomplexes showed irregular glomerate nanosphere with 252–382 nm of particle size. Their conjugation remitted HYPs degradation under various environmental stresses (thermal, light, and ascorbic acid treatment), and had a great color stability response to pH change. Higher lipid-lowering and antioxidant activities were detected in the nanocomplexes than free HYPs. This study provides a new way for fabricating novel MYPs with great physicochemical stability, bright color and hypolipidemic activities.

To deal with the environmental pollution and energy crises, it is indispensable to find green and efficient means to overcome these challenges. Herein, the Sn-doped BiOI modified multi-shelled ZnO heterojunction composite with a high performance are designed and prepared. The results prove the formation of heterojunction structure in the composites and the morphology is shown as the multi-shelled microsphere. The performances of the composites are evaluated by different kinds of antibiotic degradation and H 2 -evolution under simulation sunlight irradiation. The measurements present that the Sn -BiOI/ZnO (SBZs) could completely remove ciprofloxacin (CIP) within 100 min, which is 4.18 times that of ZnO in kinetics. Typically, the degradation rate of CIP for SBZ6 is over 99.9%, which is more than 25% higher than that of pure ZnO microspheres. In addition, the rate of H 2 production could reach 3.08 mmol g −1 ∙ h −1 , which is 1.79 times of the pure ZnO microspheres. The boosted performance of the composites may originate from the enhanced electronic transmission efficiency and improved separation and recombination efficiency of electrons/holes. The charge transfer mode in the SBZs heterojunction composites is proposed and verified as the Z-scheme by the active species experimental and the possible electron transfer path analysis. Therefore, Sn -doped BiOI is introduced into multi-shelled ZnO microsphere to form contact heterojunction interfacial, which greatly improves the photocatalytic performances of the SBZs. Furthermore, this work supplies a strategy for designing and preparing highly active ZnO-based heterojunction composites, which could effectively address the challenges of environmental remediation and clean energy production.

Cu-based perovskites have excellent optical properties, environmental friendliness, and broad optical applications. However, their development is hindered by complex preparation methods and poor hydrochromic stability. In this work, a solvent-evaporation-based crystallization strategy combined with Sn doping for the preparation of Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 microcrystals (MCs) is reported. This strategy enhances the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and hydrochromic reliability. In addition, first-principles calculations reveal the effect of Sn doping on the lattice structure and exciton–phonon coupling of the Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 MCs. The results show that Sn doping reduces the lattice spacing as a result of the substitution radius difference between Cu + and Sn 2+ ions, which causes stronger exciton–phonon coupling and enhances the PLQY. Moreover, the Sn-doped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 MCs show excellent reliability on heating and under hydrochromic cycles and long-term luminescence conditions. Based on their hydrochromic and temperature-responsive properties, the Sn-doped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 MCs are applied as encryptable printing materials for information encryption and decryption and as a fluorescence-based temperature sensor, combined with Machine-Learning to guide the manufacturing of fluorescent thermometers. The findings provide insights into the commercial value of copper-based perovskites and demonstrate their potential anti-counterfeiting, fluorescence temperature sensing applications.

Hematite with a suitable band gap is a promising candidate as the photoanode for photoelectrochemical water splitting, but it suffers from low catalytic activity and severe electron-hole recombination. Herein, a novel two-step solvothermal synthetic strategy is developed to fabricate a uniform CoO x amorphous layer with a thickness of 5 nm on Sn-doped Fe 2 O 3 nanowire photoanode. The CoO x surface layer increases the roughness of the photoanode significantly, and thus enlarges the electrochemical active area. Furthermore, the CoO x layer brings Co 2+ /Co 3+ redox couples, enhances the concentration of oxygen vacancies and increases the charge carrier density. The bulk and surface charge separation efficiencies are both improved. The surface charge transfer process and the oxygen evolution reaction are accelerated. The photocurrent density of the Sn–Fe 2 O 3 photoanode at 1.23 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) is improved from 0.83 to 1.40 mA cm −2 after the deposition of the CoO x surface layer.
