Radicals are key intermediates in numerous reactions. Their high reactivity enables various transformations to occur under mild conditions, however, also brings great challenges to control their reactions especially over heterogeneous catalysts. Here we propose to use metal nanoparticles to directly steer the conversion of free radical species. Results from photocatalytic reactions, in situ transient absorption spectroscopy, and theoretical simulation demonstrate that supported Pd nanoparticles can efficiently stabilize free radical species generated from photo-excited TiO 2 , and thus manipulate their conversion on catalyst surface, owing to the enhanced electronic interactions between metal and radical species. These understandings are crucial for the design of advanced heterogeneous catalytic systems with controllable radical reactions.

Photocatalytic degradation of pollutants is an effective environment purification strategy. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted extensive attention in the field of photocatalysis owing to their structural diversity, uniform cavity, and large specific surface area. However, poor electrical conductivity, light absorption, and water stability restrict their development. The tailorable structure of MOFs may effectively overcome these limitations. Herein, three Cu-based MOFs (complexes 1–3) with one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D), and three-dimensional (3D) structures, respectively, were successfully prepared by introducing different uncoordinated ligands and adjusting the ligand/metal salt ratio. Among them, complex 1 with a 1D chain was constructed as a typical J-type aggregation by π–π stacking interactions between adjacent naphthalene rings. This intermolecular aggregation mode enhances strong exciton coupling between conjugated rings, reduces the transition energy, expands the intrinsic light absorption edge, and provides a channel for electron transport, thus improving the charge-separation efficiency. As expected, complex 1 with a 1D chain structure exhibited excellent Fenton-like catalytic activity. The apparent reaction rates were 3.2 and 2.0 times higher than those of 2D and 3D MOFs, respectively.

The aim of this study is to investigate the degradation efficiency and mechanism of atenolol (ATL) by catalytic ozonation with Al 2 O 3 supported manganese-cerium mixed oxides (Mn-Ce@Al 2 O 3 ), prepared by the impregnation-calcination method. The Mn-Ce@Al 2 O 3 with 0.2 wt% manganese and 0.2 wt% cerium exhibited superior catalytic performance, resulting in complete ATL degradation and 63% mineralization. Mn-Ce solid solution on the surface significantly increased the specific surface area (279.5 m 2 /g). High amount of Ce 3+ , Mn 3+ and high density of surface-active oxygen were contained on the surface of the catalyst, which facilitates the formation of oxygen vacancies and promotes the electron transfer in the catalyst. Combined with the low charge transfer resistance, surface protonated hydroxyl group, which was the active site of 0.2Mn-Ce@Al 2 O 3 , was more likely to adsorb ozone and decompose it into reactive oxygen species . O 2 · − and •OH were found to be the dominant active radicals for ATL degradation and mineralization that followed first-order kinetics. 17 intermediates were identified and 3 main degradation pathways were summarized, in order to provide reference for the complete mineralization of ATL.

To achieve the sustainable development of portable electronic device, there arises an urgent need for exploiting the safe and wearable energy storage device from natural resources. Herein, a flexible Zn-ion hybrid capacitor (ZIHC) is developed using the oil palm wood derived hierarchical porous carbon (PC) and cellulose nanofiber (CNF)-based hydrogel as cathode and electrolyte, respectively. The PC is synthesized via the KOH-assisted carbonization approach, which exhibits high surface area of 1210.05 m 2 ·g -1 and hierarchical porous structure that can offer abundant active sites to accumulate electrolyte ions and accelerate the diffusion of electrolyte ions. Through in-situ polymerization and impregnation strategies, the polyacrylamide/cellulose nanofiber (PAM/CNF) hydrogel electrolyte with high ionic conductivity (17.7 mS·cm -1 ) is successfully produced. Consequently, a flexible ZIHC based on the as-prepared PC and PAM/CNF hydrogel electrolyte delivers a favorable specific capacity of 67.4 mAh·g -1 at 0.2 A·g -1 , a large energy density of 53.7 Wh·kg -1 at 152.9 W·kg -1 , and remarkable cycling stability. Furthermore, the ZIHC possesses a stable capacitive behavior in different bending states. This work provides guidance for the sustainable development of portable energy storage device from the abundant, renewable, inexpensive woody biomass.

Non-contact sensors, intelligent electronics that interact with surrounding information with no physical contact, are highly desirable for human-machine interaction. Due to the increased sensing distance and expanded operation scope, it is anticipated the non-contact device exhibiting enhanced electrical output and detection range. Here, freeze-drying assisted 3D printing approach is employed to fabricate cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/MXene-based deep-trap hierarchical architecture for non-contact triboelectric nanogenerators, which exhibit excellent sensing performance for multi-direction motion monitoring. The intermolecular hydrogen bonding between CNF and MXene nanosheets facilitates the formation of a well-dispersed ink with suitable viscoelasticity for 3D printing. The incorporation of MXene nanosheets provides the printed scaffold with more open pores for increased charge generation. Meanwhile, the high electron trapping capability of MXene leads to a weakened electron escaping tendency and an increased decay time, which are beneficial for the device’s non-contact voltage output. Based on the as-prepared non-contact sensor, an all-printed sensing array and a 3D sensor are demonstrated for multi-site and multi-dimension motion trajectories monitoring, indicating its great potential in healthcare, safe navigation, and artificial intelligence.

Solar-driven interface evaporation is an effective method to produce fresh water to alleviate the shortage of water resources. However, there are still challenges in preparing photothermal conversion materials with high evaporation rate , high photothermal conversion efficiency and low cost. Herein, a 3D carbon aerogel with excellent photothermal conversion performance was prepared by using environmental-friendly biomass materials as the matrix. The hydrophilic 3D photothermal carbon aerogel with low thermal conductivity was prepared by depositing polydopamine and loading Cu nanoparticles (CuNPs) on the surface of bacterial cellulose nanofibers. The deposition of PDA improved the mechanical properties and hydrophilicity of carbon aerogel, and the introduction of CuNPs further enhanced the photothermal conversion performance of carbon aerogel. Interestingly, the side temperature of 3D carbon aerogel was lower than the ambient temperature in the evaporation process, which could absorb energy from the environment and significantly improve the photothermal conversion efficiency, giving rise to the impressive water evaporation rate (2.07 kg·m −2 ·h −1 ) and photothermal conversion efficiency (115.36%) of 3D carbon aerogel under 1 sun. Moreover, the prepared 3D carbon aerogel had excellent purification effect on seawater, strong acid/alkali and dye solution, demonstrating its broad application prospect in the field of solar-driven seawater desalination.

In this study, the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline (OTC) were systematically investigated using different metal-doped anatase-phase mesoporous TiO 2 nanocatalysts (M−TiO 2 , M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cr). The results showed that doping with different metals had a significant effect on the ability of TiO 2 to adsorb and degrade OTC . Comparing the photoelectric properties of four photocatalysts (Fe-TiO 2 , Co-TiO 2 , Ni-TiO 2 and Cr-TiO 2 ), it was observed that the mutual synergy between the separation ability of the photogenerated carriers and the adsorption ability of pollutants was the fundamental reason for the excellent photocatalytic performance of Fe-TiO 2 . The relative intensities of the high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) peaks were used to track and analyse the degradation products of pollutants at different adsorption or light-irradiation times during the photocatalytic process. The ability of the pollutants to undergo dark-state adsorption significantly influenced their degradation paths and products. The possible mechanism of the photocatalytic decomposition of pollutants using Fe-TiO 2 along different paths was proposed according to the Fukui function calculation and MS results. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that quantitative HRMS results have been used to assess the degradation pathways of pollutants.

Responsive antimicrobial materials can control and slow the release of antimicrobial agents smartly by responding to the stimulation of environmental conditions. In this study, we designed the pH-responsive cellulose-based nanoparticles (TOCNC- g -PEI) with amino and carboxyl groups by grafting polyethyleneimine (PEI) to carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals. Finally, the Pickering emulsion was endowed with smart antimicrobial properties by emulsifying the oregano essential oil (OEO) with nanoparticles. The TOCNC- g -PEI 25000 had uniform size, greater dispersion, and excellent antimicrobial properties. The contact angles of nanoparticles were 78.70 ± 1.13°, 55.80 ± 1.58° and 55.35 ± 1.56° at neutral conditions, pH 4.0 and 8.0, respectively. The nanoparticles were responding to pH stimulation. The developed emulsion (4:6, 1.30 wt%) had exceptionally stabilized and encapsulated 98.56 ± 1.22 % of the oil phase. The OEO released rapidly within 0–12 h and slowly at 12–36 h. The cumulative release rates quickly reached 93.60 ± 3.73 % (pH 4.0) and 83.25 ± 0.36 % (pH 8.0) and stabilized gradually. The antimicrobial rates of emulsion stimulated for 4 h reached 100 % at pH 4.0, and both of them exceeded 96.10 ± 2.49 % at pH 8.0. The response of Pickering emulsion to pH stimulating controlled release antimicrobial agents and achieved smart antimicrobial.

In this paper, we successfully constructed two composite photocatalysts TiO 2 @PDI-NapSO 3 H and Fe-TiO 2 @PDI-NapSO 3 H by utilizing water-soluble PDI derivatives to bond with TiO 2 or iron-doped TiO 2 . Their photocatalytic performance to degrade phenol and diclofenac sodium (DCF) under visible light were investigated. The results show that PDI-NapSO 3 H can effectively improve the optical absorption properties of TiO 2 . Furthermore, the oxygen vacancy produced by doping of Fe in TiO 2 prevents the recombination of photogenerated carriers effectively. The larger conjugate plane of PDI-NapSO 3 H provides a convenient channel for the migration and separation of photogenerated carriers. Thus almost 99 % of phenol or DCF can be degraded by Fe-TiO 2 @PDI-NapSO 3 H within 90 or 120 min, respectively. However, the photocatalytic activity of Fe-TiO 2 @PDI-NapSO 3 H is better. The rate of phenol degradation is much higher than that of TiO 2 @PDI-NapSO 3 H. Further, through the photoelectric response characteristic analysis, radical trapping experiment and EPR test, the effects mechanism of the energy band structure, photogenerated carrier separation efficiency on the photocatalytic performance of Fe-TiO 2 @PDI-NapSO 3 H were discussed. In addition, the possible degradation pathways of DCF and the reasons for the obvious reduction of environmental toxicity after photocatalytic degradation were proposed.

Natural polymer-based sutures have attractive cytocompatibility and degradability in surgical operations. Herein, anionic cellulose nanofibrils (ACNF) and cationic guar gum (CGG) are employed to produce nontoxic CGG/ACNF composite filament with a unique core–shell structure via interfacial polyelectrolyte complexation (IPC) spinning. The comprehensive characterization and application performance of the resultant CGG/ACNF filament as a surgical suture are thoroughly investigated in comparison with silk and PGLA (90% glycolide and 10% l -lactide) sutures in vitro and in vivo, respectively. Results show that the CGG/ACNF filament with the typical core–shell structure and nervation pattern surface exhibits a high orientation index (0.74) and good mechanical properties. The tensile strength and knotting strength of CGG/ACNF suture prepared by twisting CGG/ACNF filaments increase by 69.5%, and CGG/ACNF suture has a similar friction coefficient to silk and PGLA sutures. Moreover, CGG/ACNF suture with antibiosis and cytocompatibility exhibits better growth promotion of cells than silk suture, similar to PGLA suture in vitro. In addition, the stitching experiment of mice with the CGG/ACNF suture further confirms better healing properties and less inflammation in vivo than silk and PGLA sutures do. Hence, the CGG/ACNF suture with a simple preparation method and excellent application properties is promising in surgical operations.

Tubular carbon-covered cobalt-doped bi-crystalline phase In 2 O 3 (denoted as CoInO-x) was synthesized by one-step calcination of the metal-organic framework cobalt-doped MIL-68(In)-NH 2 precursor. The photocatalytic activity of CoInO-x was investigated using tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation. The removal of TCH by CoInO-500 obtained by calcination at 500 °C under visible light irradiation was 90.1% after 70 min, which was significantly higher than that of In 2 O 3 . The reaction rate constant of CoInO-500 was 11.02 times higher than that of In 2 O 3 and could maintain a better photocatalytic performance after four cycles. The effects of photocatalyst dosing, pH, and inorganic anions on photocatalytic degradation were studied. The mechanism of photocatalytic degradation was analyzed in detail by reactive radical trapping experiments, Mott-Schottky measurements, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signal characterization. Enhanced photocatalytic performance is mostly attributed to the cobalt doping creating impurity energy levels and narrowing the forbidden bandwidth of In 2 O 3 , enhancing the visible light utilization and the photogenerated charge separation efficiency. Carbon covering can serve as a bridge for charge transport, accelerating the rapid transport of photogenerated charges.

The rapid loss of drugs and the weak curative effects due to cyclical urination are the main reasons why wound heal with difficulty after bladder tumour resection. Here, a bioinspired cellulose nanofibre (CNF)-based magnetic 3D nanonetwork wound dressing with excellent tissue adhesion and biocompatibility is designed by the assembly of pH- and near infrared-responsive CNF nanoskeletons, magnetic switching Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles , and temperature switching Pluronic®F-127. The dressing with high loading capacity for mitomycin and indocyanine green can form a sticky 3D nanonetwork at the wound site and remain for a long time to release drugs through an external magnetic field. Interestingly, the dressing possessed excellent antibacterial activity , bacterial biofilm elimination, T24 tumour cell killing, and wound healing promotion through photothermal, photodynamic , and chemotherapy. Therefore, it has promising application for bladder postoperative infected wound healing to avoid rapid loss of drugs due to cyclical urination.
