Multivalent SnO2 quantum dot-decorated Ti3C2 MXene for highly sensitive electrochemical detection of Sudan I in food

Lin Mei,Yanmei Shi,Yange Shi,Pengpeng Yan,Chunlei Lin,Yue Sun,Bingjie Wei,Jing Li

Quantum dots functionalization has been proven to be a simple modification strategy for improving the electroanalytical performance of two-dimensional electrode materials by increasing the specific surface area and active reaction sites. Herein, a new electrochemical sensing platform was fabricated by SnO2 quantum dot-functionalized Ti3C2 MXene (Ti3C2-SnO2QDs) for the highly sensitive detection of Sudan I in food. Ti3C2-SnO2QDs were prepared via in situ synthesis, which can control the nucleation and growth of SnO2QDs, resulting in the well-dispersed SnO2QDs with 2–3 nm size on the intersheet surface of MXene. Moreover, the formation of Ti3C2-SnO2QDs can effectively restrict the aggregation of Ti3C2 and improve the stability of SnO2QDs in aquatic environment. The prepared nanocomposite can be used as an improved modified material to further increase the electrocatalytic performance and electrochemical signal of Sudan I on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode. Under optimized conditions, the proposed analytical method displayed a linear dependence for Sudan I concentration ranging from 0.008 to 10 μM with a detection limit of 0.27 nM (S/N = 3) by electrochemical cyclic voltammetry. This sensor with excellent selectivity, reproducibility and accuracy was quantitatively validated in commercial ketchup and chili powder. This Ti3C2-SnO2QDs-based Sudan I sensor is expected to expand the application of MXene nanocomposites in electrochemical analysis and is envisioned as a promising candidate for monitoring illegal food additives in real food samples.

Coupling of N-Doped Mesoporous Carbon and N-Ti3C2 in 2D Sandwiched Heterostructure for Enhanced Oxygen Electroreduction

Zhaolin Gou,Huiqi Qu,Hanfang Liu,Yiru Ma,Lingbo Zong,Bin Li,Congxia Xie,Zhenjiang Li,Wei Li,Lei Wang

2D heterostructures provide a competitive platform to tailor electrical property through control of layer structure and constituents. However, despite the diverse integration of 2D materials and their application flexibility, tailoring synergistic interlayer interactions between 2D materials that form electronically coupled heterostructures remains a grand challenge. Here, the rational design and optimized synthesis of electronically coupled N-doped mesoporous defective carbon and nitrogen modified titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 ) in a 2D sandwiched heterostructure, is reported. First, a F127-polydopamine single-micelle-directed interfacial assembly strategy guarantees the construction of two surrounding mesoporous N-doped carbon monolayers assembled on both sides of Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets. Second, the followed ammonia post-treatment successfully introduces N elements into Ti 3 C 2 structure and more defective sites in N-doped mesoporous carbon. Finally, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and theoretical calculation prove the synergistic coupled electronic effect between N-Ti 3 C 2 and defective N-doped carbon active sites in the 2D sandwiched heterostructure. Compared with the control 2D samples (0.87–0.88 V, 4.90–5.15 mA cm −2 ), the coupled 2D heterostructure possesses the best onset potential of 0.90 V and limited density current of 5.50 mA cm −2 . Meanwhile, this catalyst exhibits superior methanol tolerance and cyclic durability. This design philosophy opens up a new thought for tailoring synergistic interlayer interactions between 2D materials.

Diacid Molecules Welding Achieved Self-Adaption Layered Structure Ti3C2 MXene toward Fast and Stable Lithium-Ion Storage

Mao-Cheng Liu,Bin-Mei Zhang,Yu-Shan Zhang,Yu-Xia Hu

Ti3C2 has been considered as a potential material for lithium-ion storage because of its abundant surface terminals, excellent metal-like conductivity, and modifiable layered structure. However, the Li+ diffusion rate in interlayer is limited by the small interlayer spacing determined by the van der Waals forces. Herein, the dehydration condensation reaction between amino-functionalized Ti3C2 (Ti3C2-NH2) and maleic acid (MA) molecules was utilized to enlarge the interlayer spacing of Ti3C2. The MA molecules were successfully welded into interlayers of Ti3C2 by HN–C═O bonds (namely, chemical welding) and MA chemical welded Ti3C2 (MA-Ti3C2) with self-adaption layered structure were obtained. The MA molecules can contribute double effects to the layered structure of Ti3C2, and they act as chains to remit the volume change during Li+ insertion and serve as pillars to enhance the structure stability during Li+ extraction. The MA-Ti3C2 exhibits an interlayer spacing of 1.28 nm, a fast Li+ diffusion rate (1.4 × 10–8 to 5.8 × 10–7 cm2 s–1), and improved Li+ storage performance. The MA-Ti3C2//AC lithium-ion capacitor (LIC) demonstrates an excellent energy density of 102.5 Wh kg–1 at 200 W kg–1 and cycle stability with 76.3% at 1.0 A g–1 after 1000 cycles. This novel chemical welding delivers an effective perspective for modifying the layered structure, enhancing the structure stability, and achieving fast Li+ diffusion and high-rate capability of two-dimension materials.

Ti3C2 MXene: A reactive combustion catalyst for efficient burning rate control of ammonium perchlorate based solid propellant

Pengfei Tang,Bo Yang,Rui Li,Yunchuang Wang,Xiaodong Li,Guangcheng Yang

Achieving higher energy storage and controllable energy release processes is the major research goal in solid propellants . Combustion catalysts are applied to modify the energy release behavior of solid propellants but at the expense of lowering the total energy density of the propellants owing to their non-energetic feature. Here, with ammonium perchlorate (AP) based propellant as proof-of-concept material, we demonstrate a reactive combustion catalyst strategy based on the clever use of the novel structure of Ti 3 C 2 MXene , including appropriate reactivity, high energy storage, and large specific surface area. It is found that the Ti 3 C 2 MXene could first react with AP as fuel, releasing large amount of heat and in-situ generating TiO x /C nanosheets . The resulting TiO x /C nanosheets can further catalyze the thermal decomposition of AP by accelerating both electron and proton transfer during AP decomposition. As expected, the Ti 3 C 2 MXene not only improves the pyrolysis reaction kinetics of AP based composites, but also increases the energy output of the propellants. The development of reactive catalysts with excellent catalytic activity and increased energy release provides a new strategy for the design of solid propellants.

Z-Scheme Core–Shell meso-TiO2@ZnIn2S4/Ti3C2 MXene Enhances Visible Light-Driven CO2-to-CH4 Selectivity

Ke Wang,Xianhe Li,Nan Wang,Quanhao Shen,Maochang Liu,Jiancheng Zhou,Naixu Li

Solar photocatalysis has long relied on the rational design of semiconductor photocatalysts. Herein, a ternary meso-TiO2@ZnIn2S4/Ti3C2 MXene photocatalyst is prepared and demonstrated with a core–shell structure accompanied by few-layered Ti3C2 Mxene on the ZnIn2S4 shell. The success of the synthesis depends on a two-step method consisting of hydrothermal and electrostatic self-assembly procedures. The ternary heterojunction exhibits a good behavior for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. A mechanism study of the photocatalytic reaction indicates that the photogenerated charges transfer in a Z-scheme pathway. Moreover, the construction of the Schottky junction between metallic Ti3C2 and TiO2@ZnIn2S4 is extremely effective for the reduction reaction. Consequently, the photocatalytic rates toward CO and CH4 production are up to 30.5 and 34.0 μmol/g within 3 h of illumination by simulated sunlight, respectively, while the CH4 selectivity reaches 52.7%. This work provides a good strategy to achieve highly efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

In situ growth of TiO2 nanoparticles on nitrogen-doped Ti3C2 with isopropyl amine toward enhanced photocatalytic activity

Tao Ke,Shuyi Shen,Krishnamoorthy Rajavel,Kun Yang,Daohui Lin

Construction of heterojunction and nitrogen doping is an effective approach for synthesizing photocatalysts with high quantum yield and efficient electron-hole separation. 2D MXene Ti 3 C 2 has been considered a good carbonaceous nanomaterial for designing heterojunction, while the original surface groups and stacked structure limit the electron-hole separation. Herein, a hybrid of nitrogen-doped Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets and TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) composed of TiO 2 NPs in situ growing on isopropyl amine (iPA) modified Ti 3 C 2 (iN-Ti 3 C 2 ) was developed for the first time. The novel iN-Ti 3 C 2 /TiO 2 hybrid exhibited an excellent ultraviolet-light photodegradation of methylene blue (MB), with a degradation rate (0.02642 min −1 ) significantly higher than that of pure TiO 2 NPs, bulk-Ti 3 C 2 /TiO 2 , dimethyl sulfoxide modified Ti 3 C 2 /TiO 2 hybrid, and hydrazine monohydrate modified Ti 3 C 2 /TiO 2 hybrid. The formation of heterojunction between iN-Ti 3 C 2 and TiO 2 and its role in the photocatalysis were systematically analyzed using various characterization techniques and density functional theory calculation. The iPA modification exfoliated Ti 3 C 2 and doped N on Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets; the in situ grown TiO 2 NPs formed efficient heterojunctions with the nanosheets; the N-doping facilitated electron migration in Ti 3 C 2 and inhibited the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs; •OH dominated the photodegradation of MB. This work provides a new approach of constructing efficient photocatalysts for the treatment of organics-polluted water.

Vu Thi Quyen,Le Thi Thu Ha,Dang My Thanh,Quyet Van Le,Nguyen Minh Viet,Nguyen Thi Nham,Phan Quang Thang

Advanced synthesis of nanoflower structures consisting of TiO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 nanoflowers with three-dimensional (3D) porous frameworks from two-dimensional (2D) Ti 3 C 2 MXene was done and applied for degradation of organic pollutant. The special structure of material was created by the in situ transformation, starting from Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene as provision of Ti source. The basis properties of material were characterized by SEM, TEM , XRD and XPS. The Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene showed layered structure and then this morphology was replaced by nanoflower spheres with rapid growth of TiO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 nanowhiskers. In terms of application, the TiO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 heterojunction showed an extraordinary photocatalytic efficiency toward Rhodamine B (RhB) compared to performances of pristine Ti 3 C 2 , and commercial TiO 2 . In addition, the TiO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 composite also displays the good recyclability even after 5th degradation cycles. Based on the finding, it gains a deeper insight into practical applications of 2D transition metal carbide for treatment of organic pollutants in wastewater.

Biomimetic anchoring of Fe3O4 onto Ti3C2 MXene for highly efficient removal of organic dyes by Fenton reaction

Yi Cui,Dongao Zhang,Kelin Shen,Siqing Nie,Meiying Liu,Hongye Huang,Fengjie Deng,Naigen Zhou,Xiaoyong Zhang,Yen Wei

MXene has emerged as one of the most interest two-dimensional layered materials that has been extensively explored for various applications. In this work, a novel biomimetic method has been developed for the first time to fabricate Ti 3 C 2 MXene based magnetic Fe 3 O 4 composites that relied on the self-polymerization of dopamine and subsequent mild temperature pyrolysis. We demonstrated that many organic dyes could be rapidly degraded by the MXene-MNPs composites through Fenton reaction with extremely high efficiency. The degradation efficiency could be greater than 97 % under the optimized experimental conditions. Moreover, the catalysts displayed a good recyclable property after five continuous cycles. Electron paramagnetic resonance analysis and quenching results indicated that both OH and O 2 − were the reactive species and involved in the degradation process. Owing to the universality and mild reaction conditions of mussel-inspired biomimetic method, many other multifunctional composites with great research interest could also be fabricated. We also believe that this work will provide some new insights for fabrication of highly efficient catalysts for advanced oxidation processes and exploring the critical roles of polydopamine in advanced oxidation procedures.

2D Ti3C2-MXene Serving as Intermediate Layer between Absorber and Back Contact for Efficient CZTSSe Solar Cells

Qiong Ma,Xin-Pan Cui,Wen-Hui Zhou,Dong-Xing Kou,Zheng-Ji Zhou,Yue-Na Meng,Ya-Fang Qi,Sheng-Jie Yuan,Li-Tao Han,Si-Xin Wu

Kesterite Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) has been considered as the most promising absorber material for inorganic thin-film solar cells. Among the three main interfaces in CZTSSe-based solar cells, the CZTSSe/Mo back interface plays an essential role in hole extraction as well as device performance. During the selenization process, the reaction between CZTSSe and Mo is one of the main reasons that lead to a large open circuit voltage (VOC) deficit, low short circuit current (Jsc), and fill factor. In this study, 2D Ti3C2-MXene was introduced as an intermediate layer to optimize the interface between the CZTSSe absorber layer and Mo back contact. Benefiting from the 2D Ti3C2-MXene intermediate layer, the reaction between CZTSSe and Mo was effectually suppressed, thus, significantly reducing the thickness of the detrimental Mo(S,Se)2 layer as well as interface recombination at the CZTSSe/Mo back interface. As a result, the power conversion efficiency of the champion device fabricated with the 2D Ti3C2-MXene intermediate layer was improved from 10.89 to 13.14% (active-area efficiency). This study demonstrates the potential use of the 2D Ti3C2-MXene intermediate layer for efficient CZTSSe solar cells and promotes a deeper understanding of the back interface in CZTSSe solar cells.

Laminated 2D-Ti3C2-MXenes as high-performance counter electrode for triiodide reduction in dye-sensitized solar cells

Feifei Nie,Hui Zhao,Shuhui Liu,Yuanhao Li,Huijiao Zhang,Mingxing Wu,Kezhong Wu

The different surface terminals, sizes, and sheet quality of laminated 2D-Ti 3 C 2 -MXenes were prepared by selective etching intermediate Al atoms layer form the strongly bonded compound Ti 3 AlC 2 as precursor at low temperature using different etchants of HF, HF + HCl, LiF + HCl, and NH 4 HF 2 for 24 h, respectively. Then, 2D-Ti 3 C 2 -MXenes were further instead of traditional Pt as counter electrodes (CEs) in triiodide reduction for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The selection of different etchant directly affects the properties and performance of the laminated 2D-Ti 3 C 2 -MXenes catalyst. Herein, the DSSCs with 2D-Ti 3 C 2 -MXenes CEs yielded power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of 7.15 % (HF-), 6.06 % (HF + HCl-), 6.38 % (LiF + HCl-), and 6.05 % (NH 4 HF 2 -) for regenerate traditional I 3 − /I − shuttles via the photocurrent-voltage ( J - V ) test, respectively. The outstanding electrocatalytic performances of laminated 2D-Ti 3 C 2 -MXenes can be attributed to the formation of regular inter-stratification structures by etching to expose larger specific surface areas and further generate more catalytic reaction sites, as well as the acceleration of I 3 − /I − shuttle diffusion channels by adjusting the interlayer d -spacing, implying a potentially candidate of Pt catalyst for applications in the encapsulated DSSCs as Pt-free CEs.

Portable smartphone platform based on Ti3C2 MQDs/CDs assembly for ratiometric fluorescence quantitative monitoring of crystal violet

Yuxuan Bai,Mingwang Liu,Yu He,Gongwu Song

Recent years have witnessed the ever-increasing achievements of Ti3C2 MXene quantum dots (Ti3C2 MQDs) and their vital contributions to fluorescent biosensing. However, the applicability and flexibility of most Ti3C2 MQDs-based sensors are limited by their emission of a single blue wavelength. To address this issue, we present a facile strategy to utilize carbon dots as the model to construct a ratiometric fluorescent sensor based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer to quantitatively monitor crystal violet. The fabricated probe exhibited dual emission at 440 and 565 nm respectively, when introducing crystal violet, the peak at 565 nm was quenched but 440 nm remained constant. Further aiming for portable, convenient, and on-site analysis, an innovative smartphone-assisted platform provides promising perspectives on the future in-situ quantitation. This work creates a general strategy for constructing the Ti3C2 MQDs-based composite fluorescent system, as well as suggests great application potential in food security monitoring.

Au nanoparticles decorated flower-like SnS2/Ti3C2 MXene microcomposite for high performance NO2 sensing at room temperature

Wenlei Zhang,Weiheng Wang,Yunfan Wang,Lei Sun,Yongjiao Sun,Jie Hu

The continuous discharging of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) significantly damaged global environment and human health. In this study, SnS 2 microflowers/Ti 3 C 2 MXene heterostructure was modified by Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) for the detection of NO 2 at room temperature. The microcomposite decorated with 6 wt% AuNPs exhibited excellent sensing properties including response value of 5.34 to 1 ppm NO 2 , which was almost 5 times higher than that of undecorated one. The limit of detection lowered from 500 ppb to 5 ppb with the addition of AuNPs. Besides, the AuNPs decorated SnS 2 /MXene microcomposite revealed good selectivity, fatigue resistance, as well as potential application towards flexible sensing. The NO 2 gas sensing mechanism of AuNPs decorated with SnS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 MXene microcomposite was discussed through density functional theory calculation on adsorption behavior and transferred charges in detail. This work may provide an important pathway for the future development of NO 2 sensors at room temperature.
