Interfacial interplay in LaCoO3/Ti3C2Tx composites enables kinetic enhancement in electrochemical oxygen evolution

Mo Yan,Liang Ma,Shihao Wu,Zengyan Wei,Dechang Jia,Yu Zhou,Xiaoming Duan

Developing efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for sustainable hydrogen production via water electrolysis. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of single- or few-layer Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene and LaCoO 3 /Ti 3 C 2 T x composite catalysts by a ball milling-assisted exfoliation strategy with urea intercalation. Tafel slope plot was used to obtain the intrinsic Tafel slope of OER for LaCoO 3 /Ti 3 C 2 T x composite with varying mass ratios. By optimizing the composite ratio, the intrinsic Tafel slope of OER is decreased from 88.6 to 47.1 mV/dec, indicating a shift of rate-determining step (RDS). This enhancement stems from interfacial electronic modulation rather than conductivity and hydrophilicity provided by Ti 3 C 2 T x alone. Charge transfer between LaCoO 3 and Ti 3 C 2 T x elevated the Co valence state in LaCoO 3 and induced lattice strain, which modulated its electronic structure and shifted the RDS of OER to O–O bond formation. This study highlights the interface engineering in composite catalysts for efficient energy conversion.

Multifunctional Ti3C2Tx MXene-Based Composite Coatings with Superhydrophobic Anti-icing and Photothermal Deicing Properties

Yushun Zhao,Cheng Yan,Tianqi Hou,Hongli Dou,Hao Shen

Although advances in industrial products have brought convenience to our lives, severe weather has increased the safety risks to industrial facilities. Considerable efforts have been made to develop high-performance superhydrophobic anti-icing coatings. Nevertheless, designing a functional coating with both anti-icing properties and self-deicing remains a major challenge. Here, we propose a design strategy to exploit a photothermal superhydrophobic multifunctional coating with excellent anti-icing and deicing properties based on MXene by high-temperature sintering and layer-by-layer coating. Specifically, poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) particles provide low surface energy and binding effects. Room-temperature-vulcanized silicone rubber (RTV) enhances the dispersion of the composite particles and the adhesion of the functional coating to a glass substrate. Furthermore, the functional coatings constructed with MXene exhibit outstanding photothermal effects, imparting excellent superhydrophobicity (CA = 160.18°, SA = 1.8°) and efficient photothermal conversion (equilibrium temperature of 109.3 °C). An anti-icing/deicing test is simulated to confirm their efficient anti-icing/deicing performance in practical applications. Overall, the functional coatings designed in this work can be applied in real industrial facilities.

Qi Lei,Huajun Xu,Guanyu Ma,Shuo Liang,Zirui Xiao,Yunshu Zhang,Dong Luo,Yu Gao

Two-dimensional MXene materials exhibit exceptional electrical conductivity , which has enabled their widespread utilization as highly efficient anode materials in lithium-ion batteries while demonstrating superior electrochemical characteristics. However, the structural integrity of MXene may be compromised by rapid lithium-ion intercalation, potentially resulting in diminished cycling stability. Herein, we present a dual heterostructured Ti 3 C 2 T x /TiO 2 /La 2 O 3 integrated electrode synthesized through a facile strategy. This architecture synergistically integrates the merits of individual heterostructures , substantially optimizing both electronic configuration and surface morphology of the electrode system , thereby simultaneously enhancing structural stability and energy storage performance. The optimized Ti 3 C 2 T x /TiO 2 /La 2 O 3 dual heterojunction achieves remarkable capacity retention of 319 mAh g −1 after 800 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 . Notably, under elevated current density conditions (1 A g −1 ), the MXene-based anode demonstrates extraordinary cycling durability exceeding 10,000 cycles with 101 % capacity retention. This study establishes a novel methodological paradigm for developing MXene-derived anode materials with exceptional cyclability, suggesting substantial potential for advancement in high-capacity energy storage systems and long-cycle applications within lithium-ion technologies.

Multifunctional Ti3C2Tx MXene Composite Hydrogels with Strain Sensitivity toward Absorption-Dominated Electromagnetic-Interference Shielding

Yunyi Zhu,Ji Liu,Tong Guo,Jing Jing Wang,Xiuzhi Tang,Valeria Nicolosi

The fast development of terahertz technologies demands high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials to create safe electromagnetic environments. Despite tremendous breakthroughs in achieving superb shielding efficiency (SE), conventional shielding materials have high reflectivity and cannot be re-edited or recycled once formed, resulting in detrimental secondary electromagnetic pollution and poor adaptability. Herein, a hydrogel-type shielding material incorporating MXene and poly(acrylic acid) is fabricated through a biomineralization-inspired assembly route. The composite hydrogel exhibits excellent stretchability and recyclability, favorable shape adaptability and adhesiveness, and fast self-healing capability, demonstrating great application flexibility and reliability. More interestingly, the shielding performance of the hydrogel shows absorption-dominated feature due to the combination of the porous structure, moderate conductivity, and internal water-rich environment. High EMI SE of 45.3 dB and broad effective absorption bandwidth (0.2–2.0 THz) with excellent refection loss of 23.2 dB can be simultaneously achieved in an extremely thin hydrogel (0.13 mm). Furthermore, such hydrogel demonstrates sensitive deformation responses and can be used as an on-skin sensor. This work provides not only an alternative strategy for designing next-generation EMI shielding material but also a highly efficient and convenient method for fabricating MXene composite on macroscopic scales.

Mingyuan Chao,Lingzhang He,Min Gong,Na Li,Xiaobin Li,Longfei Peng,Feng Shi,Liqun Zhang,Pengbo Wan

Flexible, breathable, and degradable pressure sensors with excellent sensing performance are drawing tremendous attention for various practical applications in wearable artificial skins, healthcare monitoring, and artificial intelligence due to their flexibility, breathability, lightweight, decreased electronic rubbish, and environmentally friendly impact. However, traditional plastic or elastomer substrates with impermeability, uncomfortableness, mechanical mismatches, and nondegradability greatly restricted their practical applications. Therefore, the fabrication of such pressure sensors with high flexibility, facile degradability, and breathability is still a critical challenge and highly desired. Herein, we present a wearable, breathable, degradable, and highly sensitive MXene/protein nanocomposites-based pressure sensor. The fabricated MXene/protein-based pressure sensor is assembled from a breathable conductive MXene coated silk fibroin nanofiber (MXene-SF) membrane and a silk fibroin nanofiber membrane patterned with a MXene ink-printed (MXene ink-SF) interdigitated electrode, which can serve as the sensing layer and the electrode layer, respectively. The assembled pressure sensor exhibits a wide sensing range (up to 39.3 kPa), high sensitivity (298.4 kPa–1 for 1.4–15.7 kPa; 171.9 kPa–1 for 15.7–39.3 kPa), fast response/recovery time (7/16 ms), reliable breathability, excellent cycling stability over 10 000 cycles, good biocompatibility, and robust degradability. Furthermore, it shows great sensing performance in monitoring human psychological signals, acting as an artificial skin for the quantitative illustration of pressure distribution, and wireless biomonitoring in real time. Considering the biodegradable and breathable features, the sensor may become promising to find potential applications in smart electronic skins, human motion detection, disease diagnosis, and human–machine interaction.

Construction of highly stable Ti3C2Tx/agZIF-62 composite glass membranes for CO2-preferential separation

Shucheng Tian,He Tao,Zhifang He,Tingting Chang,Bin Li,Jianye Li,Xueqing Li,Lu Wang,Zibo Yang,Zhihua Qiao

Ti 3 C 2 T x is a two-dimensional sheet-like material with abundant and tunable surface functional groups, showing excellent gas adsorption and transport ability in CO 2 separation. However, it suffers from several intrinsic limitations, including susceptibility to oxidation, restacking, and humidity sensitivity, which prevent it from being used alone as a membrane material for complex application scenarios. In this work, meltable ZIF-62 was selected as the continuous phase and Ti 3 C 2 T x as the dispersed phase. Thermal treatment was used to promote the softening and flow of ZIF-62, enabling the embedding and immobilization of Ti 3 C 2 T x . Finally, self-supporting Ti 3 C 2 T x /a g ZIF-62 composite glass membranes were obtained, and their gas separation performance was evaluated. The results show that the introduction of Ti 3 C 2 T x effectively improves the CO 2 permeability of the composite membranes while maintaining high separation selectivity. Specifically, the best overall performance was achieved at a doping content of 1 wt%, where the CO 2 permeability increased from 1403 Barrer to 5124 Barrer, and the ideal CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 selectivities reached 44.9 and 30.7, respectively. The CO 2 /N 2 separation performance of this membrane exceeds the latest upper bound, while its CO 2 /CH 4 separation performance also shows a competitive level. In addition, this membrane maintained relatively stable performance in humid-gas, pressure-variable, and 160 h continuous operation tests.

In Situ Tribochemical Reconstruction of Ti3C2Tx Enables Low Friction in Oil-Lubricated Steel Contacts

Zheng Wang,Yuhao Wu,Chunli Liu,Yi Zhang,Liguo Qin,Shan Lu,Yusen Luo,Sheng Li,Zhenjiang Cao,Ming Xu,Kai Xi,Peiping Yang,Guangneng Dong

MXene has emerged as a promising two-dimensional (2D) lubricant additive due to its layered structure, low interlayer shear strength, and tribochemical activity. However, their structural instability under oxygen-containing and high-temperature conditions often leads to oxidation and decomposition, which severely limits their practical use in lubrication systems. In this study, instead of suppressing this transformation, we harness the tribochemically induced in situ evolution of MXene to construct a self-adaptive lubricating interface for low friction and wear under oil lubrication. Comprehensive interfacial characterizations reveal that tribological loading drives the transformation of MXene into a highly graphitized carbon-rich tribofilm, while coordination interactions between oleic acid (OA) and MXene facilitate carbon reconstruction at the sliding interface. Reactive molecular dynamics (RMD) simulations further demonstrate that friction-induced shear promotes Ti–C bond dissociation and carbon graphitization, providing atomistic insights into the dynamic interfacial reconstruction process. The combined effects of tribochemical transformation and molecular coordination promote the formation and progressive reconstruction of a robust graphitized tribofilm, thereby sustaining low friction and enhancing wear resistance. This work provides new insights into the tribological behavior of MXene-based additives and highlights their potential for high-performance lubrication in advanced mechanical systems.

3D Ti3C2Tx-CNT composite supported Pt-based catalysts with enhanced oxygen reduction reaction activity

Xiuna Xue,Shaomin Zhu,Yue Han,Fanen Zeng,Xiaodong He,Xin Wu,Bing Xu

Platinum-based electrocatalysts have been widely used in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) because of their excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. However, rapid corrosion and structural instability of conventional carbon supports severely limit the long-term operation and commercialization of PEMFCs. In this work, a three-dimensional composite support was constructed by integrating single-layer Ti3C2Tx (SL-Ti3C2Tx) with carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The one-dimensional tubular CNTs served as interlayer spacers and conductive skeletons between MXene nanosheets, thereby effectively suppressing sheet restacking and enabling the construction of Pt-based catalysts with well-defined three-dimensional architectures. Strong interfacial interaction between the composite support and Pt nanoparticles further enhanced the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity of the catalyst. The optimized Pt/Ti3C2Tx-CNT (2:1) catalyst exhibited excellent ORR activity, with an electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of 247 m2 g−1, which was 3.1 times that of Pt/C, and a mass activity (MA) of 0.69 A mgPt−1, which was 8 times that of Pt/C. After 30 000 accelerated durability test cycles, Pt/Ti3C2Tx-CNT (2:1) retained approximately 79% of its ECSA and 83% of its MA, demonstrating excellent durability and corrosion resistance. The enhanced performance was mainly attributed to the unique three-dimensional Ti3C2Tx-CNT framework, which simultaneously improved Pt utilization, charge/mass transport, and support stability. This study provides a promising material system for high-performance PEMFC cathode catalysts and offers useful guidance for the rational design of durable electrocatalyst supports.

Mechanically robust PEDOT:PSS/Ti3C2Tx MXene–silver nanowire nanocomposites for high-performance electromagnetic interference shielding

Naseer Abou Bakar,Nadeem Muhammad,Younis Adnan,Aziz-ur-Rehman,Rehman Ubaid ur,Ali Tahir,Hussain Shahzad

The rapid advancement of highly integrated and compact electronics has spurred an urgent demand for ultrathin, lightweight, and flexible electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials that combine superior shielding effectiveness (SE) with robust mechanical durability. To address this challenge, we engineered flexible and lightweight composite films composed of MXene nanosheets, 1D silver nanowires (AgNWs), and a conductive PEDOT: PSS polymer via a scalable vacuum-assisted filtration process. The resulted co-continuous segregated structure endows the composite films with exceptional electrical conductivity, mechanical resilience, and outstanding EMI shielding performance. Notably, the ultrathin (0.014 mm) binary MXene/AgNW (1:1) BMA50 composite film achieves an exceptional EMI SE of 65 dB in the X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz), corresponding to a remarkable specific shielding effectiveness (SSE) of 26,784 dB cm 2  g −1 . Furthermore, the ternary composite film TMA10 (0.032 mm) incorporating MXene, AgNWs, and PEDOT: PSS exhibited an EMI SE of 50 dB with improved mechanical strength (120 MPa) compared to the binary composite with an SSE of 6847 dB cm 2  g −1 . All fabricated films exhibit a shielding efficiency greater than 99.99%, making them highly suitable for practical applications. The PEDOT:PSS/Ti 3 C 2 T x –AgNW ternary composite exhibited significantly enhanced mechanical performance compared to the MXene–AgNW binary system, achieving a maximum tensile strength of 120 MPa, a Young’s modulus of approximately 2.8 GPa, and superior toughness, owing to the synergistic reinforcement of the conductive polymer and AgNW-bridged MXene network. The synergistic interaction between AgNWs and MXene within the PEDOT:PSS matrix enhances electrical conductivity and forms a porous yet mechanically robust framework, enabling efficient EMI shielding while maintaining flexibility. This scalable strategy offers a promising route for high-performance flexible EMI shielding materials.

High-Performance Fiber-Shaped Supercapacitors Enabled by Polyaniline @ MXene Ti3C2Tx Hybrid Graphene Aerogel Fiber

Ran Jin,Qingquan Xue,Yang Zhang

Developing fiber-shaped supercapacitors (FSCs) with high capacitance, high energy density, and exceptional rate performance is crucial for reliable, stable and high-performance wearable electronics. Here, a polyaniline (PANI) @ MXene Ti3C2Tx/graphene (PTG) aerogel fiber was rationally fabricated via a confined hydrothermal method followed by freeze-drying treatment. The graphene sheets construct the skeleton of the aerogel fiber, which possesses a porous and interlinked structure, providing interconnected diffusion channels and a high specific surface area that promote electrolyte migration and abundant ion adsorption sites. Moreover, the covalent modification between PANI nanoparticles and Ti3C2Txsheets can significantly improve interfacial coupling and provide abundant redox sites, resulting in a reduced energy barrier of electron transfer, good interfacial stability and superior H+storage capability. As a consequence, the PTG aerogel fiber electrode delivers an excellent specific mass capacitance of 484.8 F g−1, impressive rate properties (244.4 F g−1at 10 A g−1) and exceptional cycle ability (85.2% after 5000 cycles). Additionally, the fabricated symmetrical FSC exhibits considerable electrochemical performance, including high capacitance and good energy density. This work depicts a novel route to prepare a graphene fiber-based electrode for high-performance FSCs in an intelligent wearable system.

Reinforced 0D/2D CdS-Ti3C2Tx heterostructure enhancing the performance of photocatalytic benzyl alcohol dehydrogenation

Tingting Si,Hanbo Zhang,Hai Qiu,Xingwei Ge,Xiaohe Jiang,Lan Yuan,Chuang Han

The instability and poor interfacial charge transfer of semiconductor-MXene composites greatly restrict their applications in photoredox catalysis. Herein, we propose a surface passivation strategy to construct a stable and efficient CdS-MXene heterostructure, delaying the oxidation of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene and simultaneously boosting the heterointerface charge transport, thus strengthening the cocatalytic performance of Ti 3 C 2 T x . The 2-mercaptoethanol (ME) molecules acting as crosslinkers establish intimate interfacial contact between zero-dimensional CdS nanodots and two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets, and reduce the interfacial charge transfer energy barrier, which jointly promote the efficient spatial separation of photoexcited charge carriers and result in the enhanced activity for benzyl alcohol dehydrogenation. Furthermore, the hydroxyl groups of ME passivating the unsaturated Ti atoms of Ti 3 C 2 T x , along with their thiol groups showing strong electron-donating effects and oxidation-free radical scavenging ability, cooperatively contribute to the enhanced photostability of CdS-Ti 3 C 2 T x -ME (CdS-T-M) heterostructure. This work illustrates a facile surface passivation engineering approach for reinforcing the heterointerface charge interaction and catalytic behaviors of MXene-based heterostructures.

A high-performance solid sodium battery enabled by a thin Na-Ti3C2Tx composite anode

Liang Lu,Hao Yuan,Chunwen Sun,Bingsuo Zou

Low-cost sodium metal batteries are expected to be used as an effective supplement to lithium-ion batteries in the energy storage field in the future, and have made great progress in recent years. However, the safety issues caused by Na dendrites and the relatively low specific capacity of sodium metal batteries are obstacles to their further commercialization. In this work, a thin Na-Ti 3 C 2 T x composite anode was prepared. The thickness of the composite anode Na-Ti 3 C 2 T x is only 46% of that of pure sodium, greatly reducing costs and increasing energy density. In addition, the nucleation overpotential of Na-Ti 3 C 2 T x is 55.2% and 56% that of Na at 0.5 mA cm −2 and 2 mA cm −2 respectively, which indicates that the composite anode reduces the sodium nucleation barrier and is favorable for sodium deposition. Furthermore, the poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) and Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 modified polyimide membrane significantly enhances the mechanical strength and sodium ion migration and promoted the deposition and stripping of metallic sodium. The sodium battery with the composite metal sodium anode and PVDF-HFP-Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 modified polyimide membrane has a specific discharge capacity of 87.9 mAh g −1 , and the capacity retention rate is close to 100% without significant fluctuation after 500 cycles.
