Dihydroxyacetone isomerization is a fundamental reaction for the production of lactic acid using different feedstocks. However, achieving excellent catalytic activity and resistance against leaching in water is challenging. Herein, we devised a Sn doped zirconium phosphate as effective heterogeneous catalyst. The incorporation of Sn could remarkably aggrandize the content of strong Lewis acid sites while retain relatively high surface areas. Gratifyingly, this catalyst exhibits enhanced activity and reusability for selective dihydroxyacetone isomerization into lactic acid with water as solvent. High lactic acid yields of 70.30 and 76.25% were achieved in water and water/acetone under optimal reaction conditions, respectively. The composition and activity of catalyst are reserved with reduced ions leaching. The excellent catalytic performance is attributed to accelerated conversion of pyruvaldehyde to lactic acid by the strong Lewis acid sites. Nuclear magnetic resonance revealed that the reaction is proceeded via a keto-enol tautomerization process.

Transparent electrodes are vital for optoelectronic devices, but their development has been constrained by the limitations of existing materials such as indium tin oxide (ITO) and newer alternatives. All face issues of robustness, flexibility, conductivity, and stability in harsh environments. Addressing this challenge, we developed a flexible, low-cost titanium nitride (TiN) nanomesh transparent electrode showcasing exceptional acid–alkali resistance. The TiN nanomesh electrode, created by depositing a TiN coating on a naturally cracked gel film substrate via a sputtering method, maintains a stable electrical performance through thousands of bending cycles. It exhibits outstanding chemical stability, resisting strong acid and alkali corrosion, which is a key hurdle for current electrodes when in contact with acidic/alkaline materials and solvents during device fabrication. This, coupled with superior light transmission and conductivity (88% at 550 nm with a sheet resistance of ∼200 Ω/sq), challenges the reliance on conventional materials. Our TiN nanomesh electrode, successfully applied in electric heaters and electrically controlled thermochromic devices, offers broad potential beyond harsh environment applications. It enables alternative possibilities for the design and fabrication of future optoelectronics for advancements in this pivotal field.

With the rapid development of energy sources and aerospace engineering, high-performance thermal insulation materials with multiple functions are attracting more and more attentions. Non-oxide ceramic aerogels have application potential in thermal insulation under harsh conditions owing to their good thermal insulation performance and chemical stability. In this work, TiN aerogels were prepared by a combined freeze-casting and carbothermal reduction-nitridation method utilizing TiO 2 and chitosan as raw materials, at 1473 K for 3 h, with a C/TiO 2 molar ratio of 3/1. They showed a specific surface area of 167 m 2 /g and ultralow density of 0.07 g/cm 3 (the relative density of 1.3 %). Their thermal conductivity value was only 0.166 ± 0.0054 W/(m K at 673 K (TiO 2 solid content of 5 wt%). Moreover, the prepared aerogels possessed reasonably high mechanical strength and good high-temperature service performance, suggesting that they can be used under high-temperature conditions as an insulation material.

In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) layered tin halide perovskites have attracted much attention due to their excellent luminescence properties compared with their three-dimensional (3D) analogs. Here, we synthesized 2D perovskites of the form (RNH3)2SnBr4 through a facile hot-injection approach without the use of toxic tri-n-octylphosphine (TOP) as the solvent. We found that these compounds have strong photoluminescence (PL) emission with high PL quantum yields (QY) of 35% ((C6H13NH3)2SnBr4), 82% ((C8H17NH3)2SnBr4), 60% ((C12H25NH3)2SnBr4) and 50% ((C18H35NH3)2SnBr4). Among them, ((C6H13NH3)2SnBr4) was synthesized for the first time; however, (C18H36NH3)2SnBr4 perovskites showed the best stability with a PL QY decrease of less than 1% after 30 days under ambient air and humidity conditions. In addition, other 2D (C8H17NH3)2SnX4 (X = Br, I, or mixture) perovskites were prepared by adjusting the halide ratio, resulting in spectral tunability from yellow to red. Interestingly, through Zn2+ doping, the morphology became more uniform, and the PL stability was significantly improved. Finally, we used Zn2+-doped (C8H17NH3)2SnBr4 yellow phosphor to fabricate UV-pumped yellow LEDs. We expect these 2D perovskites to be promising phosphors in future solid-state lighting and display technologies.

Photoelectrochemical biofuel cells can convert light and chemical energy into electrical energy using a dye-sensitized titania (TiO2) fluorine-doped tin oxide photoanode and a platinum-coated fluorine-doped tin oxide cathode. TiO2 of the photoanode serves both as a support for dyes and as an electron-transporting medium, the structure of which can limit electron trapping and charge transporting and then affect the performance of the photoelectrochemical biofuel cells. TiO2 nanotube array films have been shown to enhance the efficiencies of both charge collection and electron injection, and hence a vertically aligned TiO2 nanotube array is investigated as a conductor for the tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin dye to construct a new two-compartment photoelectrochemical biofuel cell. The photoelectrochemical biofuel cell containing the TiO2 nanotube array photoanode yields a short-circuit (Isc) current of 110 μA and an open-circuit (Voc) potential of 1010 mV. In contrast, the photovoltaic parameters, Isc and Voc of the photoelectrochemical biofuel cell with the mesoporous TiO2 nanocrystal fluorine-doped tin oxide photoanode, are 96.96 μA and 740 mV, respectively. Photovoltaic measurements show that the maximum incident photon-to-collected electron conversion efficiency was 58% at 430 nm through the spectral range (400–800 nm) for the photoelectrochemical biofuel cell with the TiO2 nanotube array fluorine-doped tin oxide photoanode. These results revealed that the TiO2 nanotube array had great potential for the photoelectrochemical biofuel cells.

Carbon dioxide electroreduction to oxalate suffers from low selectivity and large overpotential. This study used lead tin oxide nanoparticles for selective oxalate generation with low overpotential in propylene carbonate. The maximum Faradaic efficiency of 85.1 % have been reached by PbSnO 3 /C at −1.9 V vs Ag/Ag + with oxalate current density of 2.0 mA/cm 2 on carbon fiber paper. The notable activity for CO 2 electroreduction to oxalate was attributed to the synergistic effect of partially reduced Pb and oxidized SnO x composites in lead tin oxides.

Tin(IV)-based metal halides are promising optoelectronic materials due to their robust structure and eco-friendly nature, but these materials exhibit poor photoluminescence (PL) properties and the underlying mechanisms are still elusive. Here, a novel air-stable hybrid Sn 4+ -halide material (C 8 H 22 N 2 Cl) 2 SnCl 6 that is resistant to moisture ( > 70% relative humidity) for > 1 year is reported. The inferior PL property of (C 8 H 22 N 2 Cl) 2 SnCl 6 is limited by the lattice defects and robust crystal structure, which however could be effectively improved by introducing Sb 3+ ion with stereoactive 5s 2 lone pair. As a result, Sb 3+ -doped (C 8 H 22 N 2 Cl) 2 SnCl 6 exhibits a superbly stable room-temperature PL centered at 690 nm with an unprecedented quantum yield (QY) of 41.76% from self-trapped excitons, which is the highest PLQY of hybrid tin(IV)-based perovskite materials. The improved PL efficiency is attributed to the defect passivation and remarkable structure distortion induced by Sb 3+ dopants. This dopant-induced defect passivation and exciton self-trapping approach offers an avenue to improve optoelectronic material performance.

The conformations and redox states of ferricytochrome c , before and after adsorption onto the surface of the indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles , are studied to reveal the interaction nature between the cytochrome c and the conducting metal oxide surface. The characterizations with resonance Raman scattering and UV–Vis absorption reveal that the change of pH at moderate ionic strength induces transitions of conformations and redox-states, which suggests that there is intramolecular electron transfer. The conformations of the cytochrome c species are maintained after adsorption onto or collision with the ITO surface, but the redox states change significantly, and the change depends on the surface structure of the ITO nanoparticle. The adsorption or collision processes are governed by the pH-dependent electrostatic interaction between the proteins and the buffer anions bound to the ITO surface. This adsorption scenario differs from the conventional ones.

BACKGROUND Glycerol is a versatile platform compound to produce valuable chemicals. One-pot direct conversion of glycerol into methyl lactate with methanol as solvent is very attractive, because it can reduce intermediate steps and avoid the separation of glycerol/methanol mixtures. RESULTS A series of tin (Sn)-exchanged montmorillonite(M)-supported Au catalysts were prepared by a combination of ion exchange and colloidal deposition methods, and designed as bifunctional catalysts containing gold (Au) and solid acid. These catalysts were employed for one-pot conversion of glycerol to methyl lactate in methanol. The Au/Sn(20)-Mt catalyst gave a high yield of methyl lactate of 54% upon conversion of 0.25 mol L –1 glycerol methanol solution over 0.07 g catalyst at 210 °C under 3 MPa air for 5 h. The good performance of Au/Sn(20)-Mt was ascribed to the coexistence of small Au particle and abundance of acid sites. The glycerol conversion remained almost unchanged in the five recycled runs, whereas the methyl lactate yield decreased after the first run but kept stably in the later four catalytic runs. CONCLUSIONS Among the series of Sn-exchanged Mt-supported Au catalysts, Au/Sn(20)-Mt showed the highest glycerol conversion and methyl lactate yield. Containing both small Au particles and having an abundance of acid sites contributed to the excellent catalytic activity of Au/Sn(20)-Mt. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

Alloy-type materials hold a great potential as the negative electrodes for next generation lithium-ion batteries with high energy and low cost. However, the huge volume expansion of alloy-type materials caused by lithium alloying inevitably leads to poor cycle stability. Herein, we propose a rational design of a sandwich structure of carbon/Sn/carbon hollow spheres by a template-engaged method. The structure effect of the novel carbon/Sn/carbon spheres on the lithium storage performances is elucidated by various means of characterization and electrochemical tests. A stable and high reversible capacity of 1100 mA h g −1 is retained after 130 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 , significantly higher than that (187 mA h g −1 ) of Sn/carbon hollow spheres. Furthermore, a superior rate capability is obtained for carbon/Sn/carbon spheres, e.g., showing a high capacity of 430 mA h g −1 at 5 A g −1 . The excellent electrochemical properties of carbon/Sn/carbon against Sn/carbon are ascribed to a unique nano-confinement from the double-shelled carbons with very good structure stability and contribution of pseudocapacitive storage of lithium. These results indicate that the sandwich structure of carbon/Sn/carbon is highly effective to design electrode materials with enhanced performances.

Reducing the noble-metal loading without sacrificing the catalytic performance of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is paramount yet highly challenging. Herein, IrO2@Ir/TiN electrocatalysts employing TiN as the support have been developed and shown high efficiency toward OER. TiN is found not only to disperse the IrO2@Ir nanoparticles effectively but also to exert the electronic modulation of Ir by downshifting its d-band center of 0.21 eV compared to pure IrO2. Excitingly, TiN remarkably enhances the catalytic performance of Ir, where the overpotential to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm–2 is only 265 mV for the IrO2@Ir/TiN (60 wt %) catalyst. As a result, 71.7 wt % of the Ir metal can be saved to compare with the commercial Ir-black counterpart. Moreover, TiN can inhibit the aggregation and oxidative dissolution of Ir species, thereby enhancing the operational stability. The combined advantages of TiN open a new solution to reduce the anodic catalyst cost through boosting the catalytic activity and stability.

The synthesis of furan compounds by renewable carbohydrates has emerged as an important path toward biomass utilization. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) and furfural are two typical furan products from cellulosic and hemicellulosic materials, of which the primary components (hexoses and pentoses) undergo selective dehydration. It is worth noting that hemicellulose is rich in not only pentoses but also hexoses, indicating the feasibility of producing 5-HMF and furfural simultaneously. However, research on the production of 5-HMF from hemicellulose-derived hexoses remains lacking. Mannose, a major hexose component of hemicellulose, has been previously found to be a suitable feedstock for 5-HMF production in the presence of homogeneous catalysts, such as metal salts. In this work, Cr-, Al- and Sn/MCM-41 catalysts were prepared by a simple impregnation method and characterized. The conversion of mannose into 5-HMF was evaluated in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent. It was found that the as-synthesized Sn/MCM-41 catalyst showed a superior activity to Cr/MCM-41 and Al/MCM-41. Mannose could be effectively converted into 5-HMF with a yield of ∼45% and ∼88% conversion at 150 °C after 60 min, which were comparable to reported results over heterogeneous catalysts. The as-synthesized Sn/MCM-41 catalyst was also efficient for the conversion of glucose and fructose with reasonable 5-HMF yields. The Sn/MCM-41 catalyst could be reused for eight consecutive cycles without significant loss of catalytic activity.
