Single-source-precursor-assisted synthesis of porous WO3/g-C3N4 with enhanced photocatalytic property

Hong Yan,Zengwei Zhu,Yumei Long,Weifeng Li

In this paper, in-situ coupling of WO 3 with g-C 3 N 4 (WO 3 /g-C 3 N 4 ) was demonstrated by using melamine tungstate as a single-source precursor. The as-prepared WO 3 /g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposites were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that the single-source precursor not only ensures the close contact between WO 3 and g-C 3 N 4 , but also endows the porous structure of the product. Thus, the increased visible-light absorption, effective charge separation and enlarged surface area (22.64 m 2 /g) were achieved for the resultant product. The experimental results showed that WO 3 /g-C 3 N 4 heterostructure possesses excellent photocatalytic activity for degrading methyl orange (MO) and tetracycline (TC) under the visible light irradiation. Moreover, WO 3 /g-C 3 N 4 (5 wt%) sample exhibited the best photocatalytic activity. The radicals trap experiments revealed that both •O 2 − and holes make great contribution to the degradation of pollutants. Accordingly, a Z-scheme charge migration and recombination mechanism was proposed to elucidate the improved photocatalytic properties of WO 3 /g-C 3 N 4 . This study offers a new pathway for optimizing the microstructure of g-C 3 N 4 -based function materials and for improving their photocatalytic properties.

Bifunctional urchin-like WO3@PANI electrodes for superior electrochromic behavior and lithium-ion battery

Zhang Kun,Li Na,Wang Yi,Ma Xiaoxuan,Zhao Jiupeng,Qiang Liangsheng,Hou Shuai,Ji Junyi,Li Yao

A improved bifunctional nanostructure composite was designed and fabricated as reversible electrodes for electrochromic film and lithium-ion battery. This unique optic-electro responsive urchin-like architecture assembled from WO 3 @PANI nanobelts were prepared by solvothermal and electropolymerization methods. As expected, the composite exhibits the superior optical-electrochemical performances. The composite owns quick switching time ranging from purple, green, yellow, gray to blue via voltage regulation, better rate performance and long-term cycling stability in the galvanostatic charge/discharge process. Benefited from stable structure and short diffusion path, it also demonstrates a distinct optical modulation (△T = 45%) and excellent durability after long-term cycles (1200 cycles). The as-prepared electrode exhibits outstanding cycling stability (capacity retention of 516 mAh g −1 after 1200 cycles with a low average fading capacity of ca. 0.103 mAh g −1 and fading cyclic rate of ca. 0.02% per cycle). The long-term stability studies reveal that urchin-like composite has much more excellent optical and electrochemical durability. The morphology and structure of the composite were carried out by characterization equipment. This effective synthesis strategy will have profound implications for developing the other inorganic–organic nanocomposites in optical and electrochemical field.

Effective conversion of acid pretreated pulp to ethylene glycol over ordered mesoporous WO3 catalyst

He Yang,Weiqi Wei,Shubin Wu,Junping Zhuang

During the upgrading into biorefinery factories, the traditional pulp and paper mills urgently need to broaden the applications of pulp to achieve higher economic benefits. The conversion of pulp into high value-added bulk chemicals is considered as a potential approach. The pulp was previously treated by HCl and spray drying to decrease its particle size to 71.4 μm as the catalytic raw material. Mesoporous WO 3 with the specific surface area of 58.6 m 2 /g was then synthesized via KIT-6 silica template and it shown high performance in catalytic conversion of pretreated pulp into ethylene glycol. The feedstock conversion was 100% and the yield of ethylene glycol was 62.7% under the optimum condition. In comparison tests, the pretreated pulp and mesoporous WO 3 both displayed better catalytic performance than untreated pulp and nano-sized WO 3 without porous structure. However, the catalytic performance of mesoporous WO 3 decreased in recycling test and the reasons were analyzed preliminarily. This work demonstrated that the ordered mesoporous WO 3 was a high-performance catalyst and had potential for producing ethylene glycol in good cooperation with acid pretreated pulp.

Nanospherical composite of WO3 wrapped NaTaO3: Improved photodegradation of tetracycline under visible light irradiation

Lingnan Qu,Junyu Lang,Shuwei Wang,Zhanli Chai,Yiguo Su,Xiaojing Wang

In this paper, WO 3 -wrapped NaTaO 3 nanospheres photocatalysts with different W/Ta molar ratios were successfully prepared via a facile hydrothermal method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission and scan electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, FT-IR spectrum, UV−vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and Barrett−Emmett−Teller technique. The photocatalytic activities for degrading tetracycline hydrochloride under visible light irradiation were examined. The results indicated that the as-prepared NaTaO 3 @WO 3 photocatalysts showed the obvious enhancement in the tetracycline hydrochloride degradation ratio, compared with the pure NaTaO 3 and WO 3 under visible light irradiation. The optimum percentage of NaTaO 3 @WO 3 composites with a 60.88% degradation rate was W:Ta   =   0.3:1 in mole, which was mainly attributed to the effective separation of the photo-generated electron and hole as well as the expanding of the absorption edge to the visible region due to the spherical heterojunction by wrapping WO 3 on the surface of NaTaO 3 . The radicals trapping experiments demonstrated that there were multiple active species during the degrading process of TC. The possible mechanism of tetracycline hydrochloride degradation by NaTaO 3 @WO 3 composite was also proposed.

Synthesis of WO3−x nanomaterials with controlled morphology and composition for highly efficient photocatalysis

Zhenguang Shen,Zengying Zhao,Jingwen Qian,Zhijian Peng,Xiuli Fu

Tungsten oxide (WO3−x) nanomaterials with controlled morphology and composition were fabricated by thermal evaporation of WO3 and S powders at different temperatures in a vacuum tube furnace. At 850 °C the obtained green particle is still of the same monoclinic WO3 phase as that of the starting powder. At a temperature between 900 and 1100 °C, the resultant dark-blue products are particle-like clusters composed of numerous monoclinic WO2.90 short nanorods, but the clusters became looser and the nanorods grew somewhat longer as the temperature increased. At a temperature between 1150 and 1250 °C, elongated and thoroughly separate purple-red monoclinic W18O49 nanorods were obtained. The growth of the prepared WO3−x nanomaterials was controlled by a gas–solid mechanism. Their photocatalytic degradation on organic contaminants was evaluated by decomposing methylene blue (MB) in aqueous phase under sunlight, in which WO3 particles presented higher photocatalytic activity than its oxygen-deficient counterparts, WO2.90 and W18O49. But the W18O49 nanorods had higher adsorption ability to MB in all the samples.

Au nanoparticle-modified WO3 nanoflowers/TiO2 nanotubes used for the SERS detection of dyes

Bing Zhang,Xuehua Yin,Deshuai Zhen,Wenhong Gu,Yingju Liu,Qingyun Cai

A metal–semiconductor heterojunction material was synthesized by electrodepositing Au nanoparticles onto the surface of WO3 nanoflowers that were grown on TiO2 nanotubes and applied, for the first time, to the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of dyes. Owing to their nanoflower structure, a localized surface plasmon resonance was generated on the surface of the Au/WO3/TiO2 nanosheets, which brings about multiple enhanced three-dimensional electromagnetic fields. An enhanced factor of 3.6 × 106 was achieved. The spot-to-spot change in the SERS intensity was less than 15% and the SERS substrate could be preserved for at least 50 days. The analysis of dyes in real samples provided a recovery rate of 94.33–115.6%, indicating its potential applications in environmental analysis.

Mesoporous WN/WO3-Composite Nanosheets for the Chemiresistive Detection of NO2 at Room Temperature

Fengdong Qu,Bo He,Rohiverth Guarecuco,Minghui Yang

Composite materials, which can optimally use the advantages of different materials, have been studied extensively. Herein, hybrid tungsten nitride and oxide (WN/WO3) composites were prepared through a simple aqueous solution route followed by nitriding in NH3, for application as novel sensing materials. We found that the introduction of WN can improve the electrical properties of the composites, thus improving the gas sensing properties of the composites when compared with bare WO3. The highest sensing response was up to 21.3 for 100 ppb NO2with a fast response time of ~50 s at room temperature, and the low detection limit was 1.28 ppb, which is far below the level that is immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH) values (NO2: 20 ppm) defined by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). In addition, the composites successfully lower the optimum temperature of WO3from 300 °C to room temperature, and the composites-based sensor presents good long-term stability for NO2of 100 ppb. Furthermore, a possible sensing mechanism is proposed.Keywords:WN/WO3composite;nanosheets;gas sensor;NO2;room temperature

Enhanced dual-band electrochromism in mesoporous WO3·H2O with high optical modulation and stability

Haiding Zhong,Zhiao Han,Jinde Ling,Genglu Li,Yinyu Chen,Zhen Wang,Changhong Wang,De Li,Xiaoyu Wang

The development of electrochromic materials with high optical modulation and good cycling stability is a key focus in dual-band electrochromism. Hydrated tungsten oxide exhibits dynamic and independent control over the near-infrared and visible transmittance within the solar spectrum, garnering widespread attention in electrochromic applications. However, its optical modulation and cycling stability need further enhancement due to limited ion diffusion kinetics. Herein, a simple photo-deposition method is developed for synthesizing mesoporous WO 3 ·H 2 O films, characterized by high porosity and large surface area, which facilitates ion and electron transport within the films. Experimental results show that mesoporous WO 3 ·H 2 O can achieve three functional modes under different voltages: “bright”, “cold”, and “dark”. Compared to WO 3 ·H 2 O nanoplates, mesoporous WO 3 ·H 2 O electrode enables a superior dual-band electrochromic performance, including high optical modulation (74.1 % at 700 nm and 65.9 % at 1150 nm), rapid response times (13.5 s for coloring and 11.5 s for bleaching), high coloring efficiencies (138.9 cm 2 /C), and excellent cycling stability (optical modulation retention rate of 88.2 % after 1000 cycles). This research provides a novel approach to enhancing dual-band electrochromic performance through the incorporation of mesoporosity in materials.

Enhanced photocatalytic ammonia oxidation over WO3@TiO2 heterostructures by constructing an interfacial electric field

Zhaonian Li,Daorong Li,Zhanzhao Feng,Shuqi Lv,Qingxuan Zhang,Yanru Yu,Ying Tian,Runfeng Huang,Hongxia Chen,Kunfeng Zhang,Hongxing Dai

WO 3 nanorods and x WO 3 @TiO 2 (WO 3 /TiO 2 mass ratio ( x ) = 1−5) photocatalysts were synthesized using the hydrothermal and sol-gel methods, respectively. The photocatalytic activities of x WO 3 @TiO 2 for NH 3 oxidation first increased and then decreased with a rise in TiO 2 content. Among them, the heterostructured 3WO 3 @TiO 2 photocatalyst showed the highest NH 3 conversion (58 %) under the simulated sunlight irradiation, which was about two times higher than those of WO 3 and TiO 2 . Furthermore, the smallest amounts of by-products (i.e., NO and NO 2 ) were produced over 3WO 3 @TiO 2 . The enhancement in photocatalytic performance (i.e., NH 3 conversion and N 2 selectivity) of 3WO 3 @TiO 2 was mainly attributed to the formed interfacial electric field between WO 3 and TiO 2 , which promoted efficient separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers. Based on the results of reactive species trapping and active radical detection, photocatalytic oxidation of NH 3 over 3WO 3 @TiO 2 was governed by the photogenerated holes and superoxide radicals . This work combines two strategies of morphological regulation and interfacial electric field construction to simultaneously improve light utilization and photogenerated charge separation efficiency, which promotes the development of full-spectrum photocatalysts for the removal of ammonia.

Heterointerface-Rich Ni3N/WO3 Hierarchical Nanoarrays for Efficient Glycerol Oxidation-Assisted Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

Hongjing Wang,Wenjie Zhan,Shaojian Jiang,Kai Deng,Ziqiang Wang,You Xu,Hongjie Yu,Liang Wang

Graphical Heterostructure Ni 3 N/WO 3 nanosheet arrays loaded on nickel foam (Ni 3 N/WO 3 /NF) were synthesized by combining cation-exchange with the hydrothermal method and annealing under an ammonia atmosphere (NH 3 ). Ni 3 N/WO 3 nanosheet arrays consist of irregular particles and have abundant active sites due to the heterogeneous interface between Ni 3 N and WO 3 . Ni 3 N/WO 3 /NF was used for efficient electrocatalytic glycerol oxidation coupled to hydrogen production. Glycerol oxidation-assisted water electrolysis has emerged as a cost-effective way of co-producing green hydrogen and HCOOH. Still, preparing highly selective and stable nickel-based metal electrocatalysts remains a challenge. Herein, heterostructure Ni 3 N/WO 3 nanosheet arrays of bifunctional catalysts with large specific surface areas loaded on nickel foam (denoted as Ni 3 N/WO 3 /NF) were synthesized. This catalyst was for glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with excellent catalytic performance, a voltage saving of 267 mV compared to oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and a HER overpotential of 104 mV at 100 mA cm −2 . The cell voltage in the assembled GOR//HER hybrid electrolysis system reaches 100 mA cm −2 at 1.50 V, 296 mV lower than the potential required for overall water splitting. This work demonstrates that replacing GOR with OER using a cost-effective and highly active Ni-based bifunctional electrocatalyst can make hybrid water electrolysis an energy-efficient, sustainable, and green strategy for hydrogen production.

An innovative method for enhancing the hydrogen gasochromic performance of mesoporous Pt/WO3 films

Xuan Wu,Xingwu Guo,Chenjing Gao,Jing Luo,Lewen Nie,Juan Chen,Liming Peng

WO 3 -based optical hydrogen sensors, while advantageous due to their ignition-free operation and resistance to electromagnetic interference, face limitations due to slow response kinetics in hydrogen gasochromic processes. This study presents a novel post-treatment method using aqueous sulfuric acid, which significantly enhances the response speed of mesoporous Pt/WO 3 films. After treatment, the films exhibit an ultrashort response time of 2.4 s towards 4% H 2 /Ar, a marked improvement from 7.1 s prior to the treatment. The treated films also show excellent reversibility of 120 gasochromic cycles. The adsorbed acid layer is proved to be the cause of accelerated hydrogen gasochromic response. This exceptional performance is attributed to increased proton conductivity and the high porosity of the mesoporous structure. A modified model is proposed for the acceleration effect by acid post-treatment. Our post-treatment method represents a significant advancement in the reliable detection of hydrogen leaks at room temperature.

Polyoxometalate-derived cubic/orthorhombic WO3 heterophase junction: High sensitivity for detecting ppb-level NO2

Liwei Zhang,Feng Li,Ying Yang,Dan Li,Hui Yu,Xiangting Dong,Tianqi Wang

WO 3 is a representative metal oxide semiconductor gas sensing material with good selectivity and high sensitivity. However, high electron-hole recombination is a common drawback of WO 3 -based gas sensors. Here, we used silicotungstic acid (SiW 12 ), a classical Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM) as precursor. After oxidation, WO 3 with cubic/orthorhombic mixed-phase were in-situ formed. Gas sensing performances of the WO 3 to ppb-level NO 2 gas were tested to explore whether the POM-derived WO 3 has advantage for gas sensor applications. Surprisingly, the c/o-WO 3 calcined at 800 °C exhibit a response value of 5.239 to 500 ppb NO 2 with very high selectivity, good long-term stability, repeatability and humidity resistance. By mechanism analysis, the bandgap positions of o-WO 3 and c-WO 3 are staggered, forming an internal electric field that favours electron-hole separation and improves the gas sensing performance. This work transforms POMs into two-phase mixed WO 3 , providing a new idea for the application of POMs as precursors in gas sensors.
