Electrocatalytic synergy from Ni-enhanced WS2 for alkaline overall water splitting with tuning electronic structure and crystal phase transformation

Chenyu Song,Jishuang Yang,Shuangting Ren,Shree Kesavan Kannan,Shanhu Liu,Ruimin Xing

Due to the limited active sites and poor conductivity, the application of tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) in alkaline water electrolysis remains a challenge. Herein, Ni-WS 2 nanosheet arrays were in situ grown on the carbon fiber paper (Ni-WS 2 /CFP) as an electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media, and the introduction degree of Ni can be regulated by adjusting the electrodeposition time. When the electrodeposition time is 3 min, Ni ions are doped into the lattice of WS 2 , and by prolonging the electrodeposition time to 10 min, the nickel disulfide (NiS 2 ) crystal phase is generated to form NiS 2 @WS 2 heterojunction. The optimized Ni-WS 2 /CFP-10 min catalyst requires the overpotentials of 65 mV for HER and 251 mV for OER to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . A two-electrode water electrolysis device employing the Ni-WS 2 /CFP-10 min electrocatalyst requires a cell voltage of 1.63 V at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . This work provides a new perspective for enhancing the electrocatalytic performance of WS 2 -based electrocatalysts by introducing heteroatoms and constructing heterojunction.

Efficient visible light photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants by WS2-modified CdS nanorods: a study on heterojunction composite catalysts

Wang Chenchen,Wang Yi,Huang Yanni,Lan Zhiwen,Huang Xudong,Zeng Yuejun,Huang Longxiang,Su Qixiang,Liu Jinyang,Huang Zaiyin

Cadmium sulfide (CdS), a metal-sulfide semiconductor, is widely recognized as a promising photocatalytic material. However, CdS also faces significant challenges, such as a high recombination rate of photogenerated electron–hole pairs and a susceptibility to photocorrosion, which collectively limit its broader application in photocatalytic processes. To overcome these limitations, further strategies need to be developed to enhance the stability and efficiency of CdS-based photocatalysts. We successfully synthesized a series of novel heterojunction catalysts, WS 2 -modified CdS (CdS/WS 2 ), using solvothermal methods. The composite catalysts were characterized using a variety of analytical techniques, and their degradation performance for pollutants under visible light was evaluated with rhodamine B (RhB) and nitenpyram (NTP) as model pollutants. The results indicated that the 8% CdS/WS 2 heterojunction composite catalyst achieved degradation efficiencies of 94.2% for RhB and 89.9% for NTP. The degradation rates of RhB and NTP were increased by factors of 5.2 and 7.1, respectively, compared to the unmodified CdS. Characterization of the optical and photoelectrochemical properties reveals that the incorporation of WS 2 onto CdS effectively enhances the transfer and separation of photoexcited electrons and holes. This study provides a simple and efficient approach for the design of semiconductor heterojunction photocatalytic materials. Graphical To address the high recombination rate of photogenerated carriers and the severe photocorrosion typically observed in the photocatalytic applications of cadmium sulfide (CdS) semiconductor materials, this study successfully fabricated WS 2 -modified CdS nanorod heterojunction catalysts (CdS/WS 2 ) via a solvothermal method. The uniform dispersion of WS 2 on the surface of CdS formed a well-defined heterojunction interface, which significantly facilitated the directional transfer of photogenerated electrons (e − ) from the conduction band (CB) of CdS to WS 2 . Meanwhile, photogenerated holes (h + ) remained in the valence band (VB) of CdS, thereby effectively suppressing electron–hole recombination and enhancing photocatalytic stability.

A PCR-enhanced UCNPs-WS2 fluorescence biosensor via dual quenching-dual recovery mechanism for rapid detection of Salmonella typhimurium

Lu Han,Min Chen,Qian Huang,Weijie Lan,Chong Wang,Leiqing Pan,Kang Tu

Foodborne illnesses caused by Salmonella rank first among bacterial foodborne diseases, representing a significant risk to public health and food safety, which necessitates the development of rapid and sensitive detection technologies. This study developed an upconversion‑tungsten disulfide PCR fluorescence sensor based on a “dual quenching-dual recovery” mechanism for the detection of Salmonella typhimurium ( S. typhimurium ). By utilizing the dual properties of tungsten disulfide, which include peroxidase-like activity and high fluorescence quenching efficiency, the sensor establishes a quantitative correlation between the upconversion fluorescence signal and S. typhimurium concentration, following target-specific signal amplification via PCR. The constructed method demonstrated good specificity and repeatability, with a detection limit as low as 22.5 CFU/mL. Furthermore, by reducing the number of PCR cycles by approximately 12 (from 34 to 22), the detection time was shortened by about 24 min while achieving a detection limit comparable to that of qPCR. The sensor performed excellently in real food matrices (chicken, eggs, fish), showing spike recovery rates of 92.0%–106.3% and relative standard deviations below 10%. In summary, the upconversion fluorescence biosensing strategy integrated with PCR amplification presented in this study provides a highly sensitive, rapid, and reliable solution for the pathogen detection, significantly enhancing the capacity for prevention and control of foodborne diseases.

Photoelectrochemical biosensor for hydroxymethylated DNA detection and T4-β-glucosyltransferase activity assay based on WS2 nanosheets and carbon dots

Chengji Sui,Tingting Wang,Yunlei Zhou,Huanshun Yin,Xiangjian Meng,Shenran Zhang,Geoffrey I.N. Waterhouse,Qin Xu,Yuping Zhuge,Shiyun Ai

5-Hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) plays an important role in switching genes on and off in mammals, and it is implicated in both embryonic development and cancer progression. Herein, a novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor was developed for 5hmC detection based on WS 2 nanosheets as the photoactive material and boronic acid functionalized carbon dots (B-CDs) for signal amplification unit. This biosensor can also be used for T4-β-glucosyltransferase (β-GT) activity assessment. Firstly, WS 2 nanosheets and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were immobilized on an ITO electrode surface . Then probe DNA was immobilized on this electrode surface via Au-S bond. Afterwards, the complementary DNA containing 5hmC was then captured on the modified electrode surface by hybridization. Subsequently, β-GT transferred glucose from uridine diphosphoglucose to the hydroxyl groups of the 5hmC residues. After glycosylation , B-CDs could further be immobilized on the modified electrode surface resulting in a strong photocurrent . The PEC biosensor afforded high selectivity , excellent sensitivity and good reproducibility, with detection limits of 0.0034 nM and 0.028 unit/mL for 5hmC and β-GT, respectively. Results demonstrate that the photoelectrochemical strategy introduced here based on WS 2 nanosheets and B-CDs offers a versatile platform for hydroxymethylated DNA detection, β-GT activity assessment and β-GT inhibitor screening.

Aptamer Induced Multicolored AuNCs-WS2 “Turn on” FRET Nano Platform for Dual-Color Simultaneous Detection of AflatoxinB1 and Zearalenone

Imran Mahmood Khan,Sobia Niazi,Ye Yu,Ali Mohsin,Bilal Sajid Mushtaq,Muhammad Waheed Iqbal,Abdur Rehman,Wasim Akhtar,Zhouping Wang

Mycotoxins posit serious threats to human and animal health, and numerous efforts have been performed to detect the multiple toxins by a single diagnostic approach. To best of our knowledge, for the first time, we synthesized an aptamer induced “turn on” fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) biosensor using dual-color gold nanoclusters (AuNCs), l-proline, and BSA synthesized AuNCs (Lp-AuNCs and BSA-AuNCs), with WS2 nanosheet for simultaneous recognition of aflatoxinB1 (AFB1) and zearalenone (ZEN) by single excitation. Here, AFB1 aptamer stabilized blue-emitting AuNCs (AFB1-apt-Lp-AuNCs) (at 442 nm) and ZEN aptamer functionalized with red-colored AuNCs (ZEN-apt-BSA-AuNCs) (at 650 nm) were employed as an energy donor and WS2 nanosheet as a fluorescence quencher. With the addition of AFB1 and ZEN, the change in fluorescence intensity (F.I) was recorded at 442 and 650 nm and can be used for simultaneous recognition with a detection limit of 0.34 pg mL–1 (R2 = 0.9931) and 0.53 pg mL–1 (R2 = 0.9934), respectively. Most importantly, the semiquantitative determination of AFB1 and ZEN can also be realized through photovisualization. The current approach paves a new way to develop sensitive, selective, and convenient metal nanocluster-based fluorescent “switch-on” probes with potential applications in multipurpose biosensing.

Highly sensitive fluorescence detection of mercury (II) ions based on WS2 nanosheets and T7 exonuclease assisted cyclic enzymatic amplification

Jia Ge,Xin-Geng,Ya-Hui Du,Jia-Jia Chen,Lin Zhang,Dong-Mei Bai,Dan-Yang Ji,Ya-Lei Hu,Zhao-Hui Li

In this work, a simple and signal-on assay has been developed for highly sensitive and selective detection of mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) based on the WS 2 nanosheets and T7 exonuclease-assisted cyclic signal amplification. WS 2 nanosheet exhibits differential affinity toward short oligonucleotide fragment versus single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) probe, which is used as an adsorption material for capturing ssDNA and an efficient fluorescence quencher for reducing the background signal. T7 exonuclease, a sequence independent nuclease, catalyzes the removal of 5′ mononucleotides from the 5′ termini of double stranded DNA, while its activity on ssDNA is limited. Without Hg 2+ , FAM-labelled ssDNA probe and target probe are adsorbed by the WS 2 nanosheet and the fluorescence of FAM-labelled signal probe is quenched. In the presence of Hg 2+ , a FAM-labelled ssDNA probe could hybridize with the target probe to form duplex structures with a blunt 5′-terminal of signal probe through the formation of T-Hg 2+ -T base pairing. The FAM-labelled signal probe with a blunt 5′-terminal in the formed duplex can be digested by T7 exonuclease in the direction from 5′ to 3′, liberating the FAM fluorophore and releasing the Hg 2+ . The released target Hg 2+ and the remaining probe then bind another FAM-labelled ssDNA, and initiate the next round of cleavage, resulting in the release of numerous FAM labels back into the solution and significantly amplified fluorescent signal. This approach can warrant the detection limit for Hg 2+ down to 0.1   nM (S/N   =   3) with high selectivity against other metal ions. Moreover, the application of the sensor for lake water shows that the proposed method works well for real samples. This research demonstrates an alternative approach to detect targets of interest that holds high prospects for detecting other biomolecules or metal ions in the near future.

Construction and evaluation of tumor nucleus-targeting nanocomposite for cancer dual-mode imaging – Guiding photodynamic therapy/photothermal therapy

Jie Zhou,Qiaolei Wang,Shizhen Geng,Rui Lou,Qianwen Yin,Weiran Ye

To tackle the barrier of the insufficient intra-cellular delivery of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and heat, we designed a multifunctional nanoplatform to release ROS and heat directly in the cell nucleus for enhancing combined photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) of tumors. As a photothermal agent, WS 2 nanoparticles were adsorbed photosensitive Au 25 (Captopril) 18 − (Au 25 ) nanoclusters via electrostatic interaction. And Dexamethasone (Dex), a glucocorticoid with nucleus targeting capability, played a key role in the intra-nuclear process of heat and ROS. PTT can increase intra-tumoral blood flow to promote Au 25 produce more ROS for PDT. Under near infrared (NIR) laser irradiation at a single 808 nm, these nucleus targeting WS 2 nanoplatforms showed a significant decreased cell viability of 18.2 ± 1.7% and a high DNA damage degree of 59.6 ± 8.3%. Furthermore, the WS 2 nanoplatform could be further used for X-ray computed tomography (CT) images. Taken together, our study provided a new prospect for effectively diagnostic and enhancing PTT/PDT efficacy.

Bulk and interface regulation of ZnIn2S4/WS2 hybrids for boosting bi-functional catalysis: selective RhB photodegradation and electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Meiting Li,Meili Cui,Chi Zhang,Zhiwei Zhao,Mengjiao Tang,Xuejiao Wang

ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 hybrid exhibits selective RhB photooxidation and electrocatalytic HER. • pH = 2 ZnIn 2 S 4 could thoroughly photobleached RhB via complete mineralization. • S-scheme ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 yielded Rh-110 intermediates via N-de-ethylation. • Strong interfacial interaction of heterojunction reduced ΔG H* and ΔG H2O* . RhB molecules could be selectively photodegraded over bare ZnIn 2 S 4 (advanced oxidation) and ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 heterojunctions (Rh-110 intermediates via N-de-ethylation). Adequate band structure, interface electric field and S-scheme charge transfer pathway generated more • O 2 – radicals with strong reducibility. Thus, the best R  = 1:1 ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 one showed ∼ 93.4% of removal efficiency toward RhB within ∼ 20 min of visible light irradiation, and RhB completely transformed into Rh-110 after 5 min of irradiation. Strong interfacial interaction between ZnIn 2 S 4 and WS 2 allowed R  = 1:1 ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 electrode with the smallest Tafel slope of ∼ 78.06 mV dec -1 and charge transfer resistance in alkaline KOH electrolyte, which thus enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and cycling durability of ZnIn 2 S 4 . The first-principle calculations demonstrated that the ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 heterojunction exerts a desirable H* adsorption–desorption kinetic. ZnIn 2 S 4 /WS 2 heterojunction possesses superior dual functionality of selective photooxidation toward RhB and electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution, which is responsible for the S-scheme charge transfer and strong interfacial interaction. The first-principle calculations demonstrated its desirable H* adsorption–desorption kinetic. Download: Download high-res image (150KB) Download: Download full-size image

2D WS2/Polyimide Composite Films With Enhanced Mechanical Properties, Electrical Breakdown Strength, and Thermal Stability via Optimized Filler–Polymer Interfaces

Xian Cheng,Wenhao Zhang,Chenxi Wang,Shuo Chen,Zihao Tang,Leyuan Zhang

Polyimide (PI) has been extensively employed in flexible insulation applications for electrical equipment due to its exceptional mechanical properties, thermal stability, and superior electrical insulation performance. This study employed two-dimensional (2D) tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) with varying surface dimensions and thickness to modify PI for the first time, exploring the mechanism of the interfacial effect of WS 2 in the matrix on the performance enhancement of composite films. The 2D WS 2 , owing to its low interlayer friction characteristics and the formation of a continuous interfacial phase within the polymer matrix, facilitates efficient stress transfer between the filler and matrix. Additionally, the high thermal conductivity of WS 2 mitigates localized overheating, which in turn increases the thermal decomposition temperature of the polyimide film. Moreover, the uniformly dispersed lamellar architecture introduces a high density of interfacial charge traps; the confinement effect of these traps on the charge effectively inhibits the development of discharge channels. The WS 2 /PI composite film prepared by in situ polymerization shows excellent performance, with significant increases of 162.9% in elongation at break and 12.8% in breakdown strength. This work provides critical insights into the design and preparation of advanced flexible insulating materials for high-voltage electrical applications.

Gas Sensor Selectivity Assessment Indicator of Fill Factor from Response Curve: A Case Study on WS2-Based Ammonia Gas Sensors

Peng Wang,Ming Li,Zhiyuan Zhu,Chengli Tang

With the advancement of smart detection technologies, gas sensors have gained increasingly widespread applications in environmental monitoring, industrial safety, medical diagnostics, and intelligent agriculture. The response curve of a single gas sensor is conventionally used to calculate sensor performance evaluation parameters of response/recovery time and response value. The selectivity of a single sensor is currently evaluated by a selectivity coefficient based on the response value, which faces difficulty in distinguishing gases with different concentrations. In this study, a new metric of fill factor (FF) derived from response curve morphology features was introduced to offer a novel solution for single-sensor selectivity analysis. Three variants of the novel metrics, FFres (response phase fill factor), FFrec (recovery phase fill factor), and FF (total fill factor), can be calculated from the response curve. As a proof-of-concept, the FFs of WS2, WS2@PANI, and Au/PANI/WS2 sensors at different concentrations of ammonia, acetone, methanol, ethanol, and water vapor were calculated and used for gas selectivity analysis. Results demonstrated distinct FF ranges for ammonia and other gases, validating FF as a potential selectivity indicator. This approach provides a multidimensional analysis framework for enhanced single-sensor discrimination by constructing a parameter space incorporating curve morphology features.

Materials and methods The structure, light-mediated drug release behavior, photothermal effect, and synergistic therapeutic efficiency of PMOs-DOX@WQDs to HCT-116 colon cancer cells were investigated. The thioether-bridged PMOs exhibit a high DOX loading capacity of 66.7 μg mg −1 . The gating of the PMOs not only improve the drug loading capacity but also introduce the dual-stimuli-responsive performance. Furthermore, the as-synthesized PMOs-DOX@WQDs nanoparticles can efficiently generate heat to the hyperthermia temperature with near infrared laser irradiation. Results It was confirmed that PMOs-DOX@WQDs exhibit remarkable photothermal effect and light-triggered faster release of DOX. More importantly, it was reasonable to attribute the efficient anti-tumor efficiency of PMOs-DOX@WQDs. Conclusion The in vitro experimental results confirm that the fabricated nanocarrier exhibits a significant synergistic effect, resulting in a higher efficacy to kill cancer cells. Therefore, the WQD-coated PMOs present promising applications in cancer therapy.

Tungsten disulfide (WS2) is a highly active co-catalyst in Fe(III)/H2O2 Fenton-like reactions for efficient acetaminophen degradation

Dongqin He,Dongli Wang,Hongwei Luo,Yifeng Zeng,Ganning Zeng,Jun Li,Xiangliang Pan

The most important factor that restricts the decomposition of H 2 O 2 in the Fe 3+ /H 2 O 2 reaction is the slow cycling efficiency of reducing Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ . In this study, the addition of tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) as a co-catalyst achieved a rapid cycling of the reaction rate-limiting step and a significant enhancement of H 2 O 2 decomposition, which resulted in the effective degradation of acetaminophen (APAP). Results show that 99.6% of APAP (5 mg L −1 ) could be degraded by H 2 O 2 /Fe 3+ /WS 2 system within 2.5 min. The conversion of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ occurred mainly on the surface of WS 2 due to the redox reaction of the exposed W 4+ active sites with Fe 3+ after the unsaturated S atoms were bound to protons. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and radical quenching experiments evaluated the contribution of hydroxyl radical (•OH) and superoxide radical (O 2 • − ) in the degradation of pollutants. WS 2 showed good recoverability after four cycles of the reaction. This study provides a new perspective to improve the efficiency of Fe 3+ /H 2 O 2 and provides a reference for the involvement of transition metal sulfides in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs).
