Critical limb ischemia (CLI) remains refractory to current revascularization strategies due to its complex pathology. Here, we report an injectable alginate hydrogel that orchestrates a dual-pathway regenerative cascade by simultaneously reprogramming the immune microenvironment and activating direct tissue repair. The system is rationally designed by integrating two functional modules: (i) immunomodulatory carbon dots (PNS-AA@CQDs-COS) that selectively target M1 macrophages and drive them to the M2 phenotype, and (ii) intrinsically bioactive cross-linkers (Zn2+/l-Arg) that serve as sustained-release pro-regenerative signals. Critically, this dual-component architecture enables a synergistic interplay─while the carbon dots establish an anti-inflammatory microenvironment (path 1), the liberated Zn2+ and l-Arg directly activate endothelial cells and muscle satellite cells, thereby initiating coordinated vascular and myogenic regeneration (path 2). In vitro, the hydrogel significantly amplified reparative crosstalk within macrophage-endothelial/myogenic cells’ cocultures. In a murine CLI model, a single injection of the hydrogel resulted in durable recovery of hindlimb perfusion (80.4% by day 14), improved motor function, and enhanced tissue repair. Mechanistic studies revealed that these benefits stem from microenvironment remodeling (M2 polarization and IL-10 upregulation) and modulation of key signaling pathways─suppressing NF-κB while potentiating PI3K/Akt/eNOS. This work presents a material-based strategy that couples immunomodulation with direct cellular activation, offering a synergistic therapeutic platform for CLI and potentially other ischemic diseases.

Glutathione–Au nanoclusters (GSH–AuNCs) are known as typical luminophores with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) features, which can be triggered by low temperature, low pH values, and metal ions. However, these strict “triggers” restrict the application of this AIE probe under mild and neutral conditions. In this work, fluorescent amino-modified silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) and GSH–AuNCs can self-assemble into well-designed nanospheres through electrostatic interactions under physiological conditions. The hybrid probe of SiNPs@GSH–AuNCs exhibits dual emissions located at 450 nm from SiNPs and 570 nm originating from the aggregation enhanced emission (AEE) of GSH–AuNCs. Interestingly, the addition of Zn2+ or Cd2+ can connect the nanospheres to form large aggregates, so a unique second increase of AEE from GSH–AuNCs appears, while the emission of SiNPs remains constant to act as an internal reference. The fluorescence ratios (I570/I450) of SiNPs@GSH–AuNCs are positively correlated with Zn2+ or Cd2+ with the linear range from 1.5 μM to 500 μM. Most importantly, besides the advantages of dual emissions, high fluorescence brightness, and good stability, the SiNPs@GSH–AuNCs also exhibit excellent biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity, and have been successfully applied in zinc imaging in live cells. Furthermore, the proposed method is also used to measure Zn2+ and Cd2+ in real samples with satisfactory recoveries.

As the concentration of Zn 2+ in patients with prostate cancer is much less than that in healthy persons, Zn 2+ concentration can be used as a marker to expediently screen prostate cancer. In this study, a sensitive and highly selective surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) method to detect Zn 2+ concentration in human prostatic fluids by utilizing water-insoluble 2-carboxyl-2′-hydroxyl-5′-sulfoformazylbenze (Zincon) as a SERS probe based on self-assembled Au nanoarrays at a liquid–liquid interface between n-hexane and Au colloids was proposed. Zincon showed remarkably different SERS bands before and after coordinating Zn 2+ in the controlled conditions (70 μL of ethanol, 500 μL of n-hexane, pH value of 7.1 and 10 s of vortex mixing time), which can be used in quantifying Zn 2+ with characteristic peaks. The proposed SERS method presented a good linear relationship ranging from 0.5 to 10 μmol/L and a satisfactory detection limit of 0.1 μmol/L as well as low interference with other metal ions . Moreover, the detection results are close to those of the conventional standard atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) method.

Efficient photo-electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are synthesized using a facile one-step hydrothermal method. With metal-ion bridges, highly dispersed molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanolayers are vertically grown on the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) to form RGO-M-MoS 2 photocatalysts for HER, where M = Fe 3+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ . The results show that the cross-bridging ions can modulate the MoS 2 growth priority and act as efficient charge transfer channels between RGO and MoS 2 , and combine the advantages of the high conductivity of graphene with the photo-electrochemical activity of MoS 2 . The metal-ion bridged MoS 2 -M-RGO heterostructures demonstrate superior catalytic activity toward hydrogen evolution reaction in acid medium, evidenced by the remarkable higher catalytic current density at low overpotential compared with that of MoS 2 -RGO without metal-ion bridge. This study provides a novel and facile route for establishing efficient composite photo-electrocatalysts for water splitting to generate hydrogen.

A highly selective and sensitive method for recognition of Zn 2+ and hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) in aqueous solution has been developed by using a quinoline fluorescent sensor functionalized magnetic silica nanoparticles ( R1 ). The chemosensor R1 shows excellent fluorescence sensitivity and selectivity toward Zn 2+ and H 2 S in aqueous media , and displays off–on–off type fluorescence change with alternately adding Zn 2+ and H 2 S to the media along with reversible association–dissociation of the complex. Furthermore, the magnetic nanocomposites can be easily separated from solutions by adding an external magnetic field . Finally, using Zn 2+ and H 2 S as inputs and the fluorescence intensity as output, an INHIBIT logic gate can be constructed at the nanoscale level.

The catalytic pyrolysis of polyethylene for aromatic production is a promising method for waste plastic disposal and resource recovery. This study investigated the nature of metal species and the distribution of acidic sites in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) scission-aromatization reactions using metal-loaded zeolite catalysts. Under the influence of the 1.0Zn/MOR40 catalyst, LDPE achieved a maximum aromatic selectivity of 45.71 % at 500 °C, based on the total product composition. The results indicated that catalysts with a lower Brønsted acid site to Lewis acid site ratio (BAS/LAS) and a higher concentration of [ZnOH] + species favored the reaction, promoting the generation of olefin intermediates and aromatics while suppressing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) formation. However, there was an optimal range for the BAS/LAS ratio and [ZnOH] + species concentration. Reaction results involving squalene and triacontane demonstrated that excessive dehydrogenation of reactants and insufficient BAS could hinder the progression of aromatization reactions, resulting in an increased proportion of PAHs. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the balance between the synergistic and antagonistic effects of metal-acid sites on the aromatization process.

Zinc-based energy storage devices are among the most promising candidates for large-scale energy storage owing to their inherent safety and the abundance of raw materials. However, the “tip effect” of zinc metal promotes dendrite growth, significantly limiting the cycle life of zinc-based devices. This study utilizes mullite nanofiber membranes (possessing excellent mechanical strength and high-temperature resistance) as a Zn²⁺-regulating interface layer to achieve uniform Zn²⁺ flux distribution and controlled zinc deposition. Consequently, the cycling stability of both zinc anodes and zinc-based devices is significantly enhanced. Using air-jet spinning followed by high-temperature annealing, this study fabricates a flexible and foldable mullite membrane containing aluminum and silicon, with a uniform pore structure and excellent high-temperature resistance. At a current density of 5 mA cm⁻² and stripping capacity of 1 mAh cm⁻², the Zn//Zn symmetric cell incorporating the mullite membrane achieves a cycle life exceeding 1600 h. The Zn//Mul–GF//AC capacitor demonstrates stable cycling over 20,000 cycles with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.95 %. This enhanced performance is primarily attributed to the unique structural advantages of the mullite membrane: (1) in conjunction with a glass fiber separator, it forms a gradient-distributed pore architecture that exerts a dielectric shielding effect, facilitating uniform Zn²⁺ flux distribution for homogeneous zinc deposition, and (2) its excellent mechanical integrity suppresses dendrite formation and interfacial side reactions. Furthermore, the soft-pack zinc-ion capacitor incorporating the mullite membrane exhibits excellent electrochemical performance under high-temperature (55°C) and bending conditions, owing to its flexibility and thermal resistance.

The inherent hydrophobicity of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) ultrafiltration membranes leads to severe membrane fouling when processing proteinaceous solutions and organic contaminants, significantly limiting their practical applications. This study presents a novel metal-ion mediated co-deposition strategy for fabricating high-performance antifouling poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) hollow fiber ultrafiltration membranes. Through Zn2+coordination-driven self-assembly, a uniform and stable composite coating of dopamine (DA), tannic acid (TA), and ZIF-8 nanoparticles was successfully constructed on the membrane surface under mild conditions. The modified membrane exhibited significantly enhanced hydrophilicity, with a water contact angle of 21° and zeta potential of −29.68 mV, facilitating the formation of a dense hydration layer that effectively prevented protein adhesion. The membrane demonstrated exceptional separation performance, achieving a pure water permeability of 771 L/(m2∙h∙bar) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection of 97.7%. Furthermore, it showed outstanding antifouling capability with flux recovery rates exceeding 83.6%, 74.7%, and 71.5% after fouling by BSA, lysozyme, and ovalbumin, respectively. xDLVO analysis revealed substantially increased interfacial free energy and stronger repulsive interactions between the modified surface and protein foulants. The antifouling mechanism was attributed to the synergistic effects of hydration layer formation, optimized pore structure, additional water transport pathways from ZIF-8 incorporation, and electrostatic repulsion from negatively charged surface groups. This work provides valuable insights into the rational design of high-performance antifouling membranes for sustainable water treatment and protein separation applications.

With the development of industry, the treatment of industrial waste water containing metal ions has become a difficult problem in environmental governance. Polymer fluorescent probe is an effective method for identifying and enriching metal ions in waste water. The ring ‒ opening polymerization of ε ‒ caprolactone was initiated with 1 ‒ pyrene methanol as the initiator and the fluorescent group, and then it was chemically linked with the recognition group dimethylpyridine amine by 2‒chloroacetyl chloride to obtain the polymer fluorescent probe L. The chemical structure of polymer fluorescence probe L was confirmed by 1 H NMR. The recognition performance of polymer fluorescence probe L for metal ions was studied by fluorescence spectra. The results show that the polymer fluorescence probe L has specific recognition ability for metal ion Zn 2+ . By optimizing the optical properties, the selectivity and anti-interference ability of fluorescence probe L to Zn 2+ were improved. The linear recognition range of Zn 2+ is from 2 × 10 –6 mol ∙ L -1 to 9 × 10 –6 mol ∙ L -1 , and the detection limit is 6.38× 10 –7 mol ∙ L -1 . According to the plot curve of job, the complex ratio of Zn 2+ and probe L is 1 : 1. The fluorescence principle of coordination between dimethylpyridine amine (DPA) and zinc ion (Zn 2+ ) mainly involves the inhibition of photo induced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. In summary, probe L can be used to detect Zn 2+ in acetonitrile rapidly, so it has a certain application value in the identification and separation of metal ions in industrial waste water.

Simple and efficient bacterial detection is important for the diagnosis of foodborne diseases caused by bacteria. Herein, we proposed a new electrochemical biosensor based on Zn 2+ -triggered swing-arm robot and multifunctional covalent organic framework-based nanocomposite (COF@Au-Thi/H4) for ultrasensitive detection of Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). COF, as an efficient nanocarrier for DNA and signal molecules, has efficient hybridization and loading capabilities. Its high porosity provides a large number of attachment sites for signal molecule thioredoxin (Thi). The biosensor used poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride)-functionalized graphene/Ag@Au nanosheets (PDDA Gr/Ag@AuNS) as the electrode modification materials and COF@Au-Thi/H4 as the signal probes. The aptamer-containing arms and S2 probe formed triple helix molecular switch (THMS). When E. coli were present in the system, specific interaction between the aptamer and target caused the S2 probe to be released from the THMS, which triggered strand displacement reaction (T-SDR) to release S1 probe and excess Zn 2+ under acid dissolution. These released probes activated the swing-arm robot. The Zn 2+ -dependent DNAzyme cycle cleaved the substrate DNA strand, causing the exposure of DNA complementary to hybridize with COF@Au-Thi/H4 signal probe, thus generated significant current signal for bacteria detection, with the detection limit (LOD) of 10 CFU/mL. The detection time was less than 3 h. In addition, the method could detect real samples, which has broad prospects in biological analysis and disease diagnosis applications.

A series of schiff base derivatives with salicylaldehyde moieties were designed and synthesized. These materials exhibit typical AIE properties and high fluorescence quantum yields in an aggregated state based on the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism. Then, the effect of substituted group types and positions on the fluorescence of these novel compounds was investigated through fluorescence spectra analysis and theoretical calculations. And it was found that the salicylaldehyde derivatives can be used as potential pH and Zn2+ sensors.

The mild electrolyte working environment of rechargeable aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs) features its promising characteristic and potential application for large-scale energy storage system. However, the poor cycling stability significantly hinders the broad application of AZIBs due to the complex electrochemical conversion reactions during charge-discharge process. Herein, we propose a strategy to improve the electrochemical performance of AZIB by enhancing the successive electrochemical conversion reactions. With a rational design of electrode, an even homogeneous electric field can be achieved in the cathode side, resulting to significantly enhanced efficiency of successive electrochemical conversion reactions. Charge storage mechanism studies reveal that the reversibility behaviors of byproducts alkaline zinc sulfate (ZHS) can dramatically determine the H + /Zn 2+ de/intercalation process, and a high reversibility characteristic ensures the facilitated electrochemical kinetics. As expected, the resultant AZIB possesses outstanding electrochemical performance with a high specific capacity of 425.08 mAh⋅g −1 at 0.1 A⋅g −1 , an excellent rate capacity of about 60% (246.6 mAh⋅g −1 at 1 A⋅g −1 ) and superior cycling stability of 93.7% after 3000 cycles (at 3 A⋅g −1 ). This effective strategy and thinking proposed here may open a new avenue for the development of high-performing AZIBs.
