ZnIn 2 S 4 is a semiconductor photocatalyst with a suitable band gap for renewable energy production. However, its efficiency in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is limited by the rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. In this study, a ZnIn 2 S 4 @Ni-MOF-74 heterojunction nanocomposite was designed and synthesized via an in-situ hydrothermal growth method. This unique structure promotes intimate interfacial contact between the two materials and ensures a well-aligned band structure. The optimized ZnIn 2 S 4 @Ni-MOF-74 composite achieves a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 1823.7 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 without the use of precious metal cocatalysts, significantly surpassing that of pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 . Cycling tests demonstrated that the photocatalyst maintains stable performance over 12 consecutive cycles without significant degradation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the well-matched band alignment and intimate interfacial contact, which collectively facilitate the formation of a type-II heterojunction structure, thereby promoting efficient charge separation and migration.

Photocatalytic water splitting is a highly promising approach for sustainable hydrogen production. However, a critical challenge lies in developing photocatalysts that simultaneously achieve efficient charge separation and abundant catalytic active sites. Herein, a novel heterojunction system composed of ZnIn 2 S 4 integrated with copper-modified UiO-66-NH 2 (ZnIn 2 S 4 /Cu-UiO-66-NH 2 ) is developed as an efficient photocatalyst for hydrogen production. The optimal ZnIn 2 S 4 /Cu-UiO-66-NH 2 exhibits a hydrogen evolution rate of 630.25 μmol g −1 h −1 under visible-light irradiation, demonstrating a remarkable 114-fold enhancement compared to pristine UiO-66-NH 2 . The excellent photocatalytic performance originates from the novel Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism between ZnIn 2 S 4 and Cu-UiO-66-NH 2 , which facilitates efficient charge separation while maintaining strong redox capabilities. Furthermore, the incorporated Cu species serve as highly efficient active sites for hydrogen evolution. This work provides a rational design strategy for constructing Z-scheme heterojunctions, advancing the development of efficient artificial photosynthesis systems for sustainable energy applications.

Novel layer-like Ni(OH)2 co-catalyst-decorated ZnIn2S4 microsphere photocatalysts were synthesized for the first time via a facile in situ deposition method to boost the photocatalytic H2-production performance. The physical and optical properties of the as-prepared Ni(OH)2–ZnIn2S4 composite samples were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis diffusion reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPV). The results indicate that the photocatalytic H2 evolution activity of the ZnIn2S4 microspheres under visible light irradiation significantly enhances by introducing inexpensive Ni(OH)2 as a co-catalyst. The 5 mol% Ni(OH)2–ZnIn2S4 sample shows the highest H2-production rate of 8.35 mmol g−1 h−1, which is 18 times higher than that of pure ZnIn2S4. Moreover, photocatalytic activity of the Ni(OH)2–ZnIn2S4 sample remains stable even after 4 cycling photocatalytic experiments. In addition, a possible mechanism on the enhanced photocatalytic activity was proposed and verified by surface photovoltage spectroscopy.

Surface biofouling is a pervasive and intractable challenge that accelerates the corrosion of cement-based marine infrastructures, drastically impairs their structural durability and shortens their service life. Herein, to address these critical issues, an interfacial electric field-driven S-scheme Mn0.2Cd0.8S/ZnIn2S4 (MCS/ZIS) heterojunction was rationally designed and fabricated as a high-performance photocatalytic coating for sustainable surface antibacterial protection. Owing to the Fermi level difference between MCS and ZIS, a robust internal electric field is constructed at the heterojunction interface, which not only boosts the directional charge transfer across the interface but also effectively suppresses the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. More importantly, the unique S-scheme charge transfer pathway enables the selective retention of highly reductive electrons in the conduction band of MCS and strongly oxidative holes in the valence band of ZIS, which synergistically facilitates the efficient two-electron oxygen reduction reaction for in situ hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generation. The optimized MCS/ZIS composite achieves a remarkable H2O2 production rate of 899.7 μmol·g–1·h–1 under simulated sunlight irradiation, which is 2.1 times higher than that of pristine MCS. When integrated onto the surface of cement-based materials, the as-prepared MCS/ZIS photocatalytic coating continuously generates H2O2 under light illumination, exhibiting excellent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 20.33 μg·mL–1. This work not only provides a novel photocatalytic antifouling strategy for enhancing the durability of cement-based materials but also offers a feasible design idea for the construction of high-efficiency S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for environmental remediation applications.

Although extensive research has been conducted on cation vacancies in photocatalysts, the significance of vacancy defects in photocatalytic reactions and deep-going understanding of the intrinsic mechanisms are still limited. Herein, an appropriate introduction of zinc vacancies on ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) is rationally designed through Er or La (Er/La)-doping. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) directly demonstrates distinct zinc vacancies (V Zn ), which is also confirmed by electron spin resonance analysis. The results of experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations manifest that Er/La-doping not only promotes the formation of V Zn but also enhances the built-in electric field, thus facilitating the rapid transfer of carriers. In addition, femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (fs-TAS) reveals that V Zn induces a supplementary charge transfer pathway, thereby enhancing charge separation efficiency. As a result, the desired photocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to syngas capacity is finally achieved on Er 0.2 -ZIS, with tunable H 2 /CO ratios, exceeding that of untreated ZIS by over 2 times. This study not only exploits a novel avenue to develop high-activity cation vacancies photocatalysts but also provides new perspectives in regulating the photogenerated carrier dynamics.

Designing efficient photocatalysts for photocatalysis hydrogen production is crucial for advancing green energy technologies. In this work, ZnIn 2 S 4 photocatalyst with an asymmetric Zn-Zn-S unit ring structure and abundant in S vacancies was achieved by precisely tuning the molar mass of the Zn ion source using ethylene glycol as the reaction solvent. Z-type heterojunction was constructed via the electrostatic assembly by combining silver clusters (Ag x @GSH) with ZnIn 2 S 4 to enhance charge separation and photocatalytic activity. The structural transition from S-Zn-S to Zn-Zn-S led to local charge redistribution. Meanwhile, S vacancies acted as electron traps, promoting the charge state change of S in the S H sites and significantly accelerates the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The composite catalyst Zn-Vₛ-ZIS/Ag x @GSH exhibited a hydrogen production rate of 18.4 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , under acidic conditions with lactic acid as the sacrificial agent, which is 3.7 times higher than pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the Zn-Zn-S distortion and heterojunction formation synergistically enhanced charge transfer and hydrogen adsorption kinetics. This work provides a novel approach for tailoring ZnIn 2 S 4 -based photocatalysts and provides new insights into the design of high-performance heterojunction systems for solar energy conversion.

In recent years, the overuse and improper disposal of antibiotics have led to their widespread presence in various environmental matrices and biological fluids. Exploring non-noble metal sulfides as electrocatalysts for reliable antibiotic detection holds substantial value but is limited by their inherent low electrochemical activity. Herein, CoS2 nanoparticles were first synthesized via a hydrothermal method, and used for the in situ assembly of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets. Then, plasma technology was employed for efficient and rapid generation of sulfur vacancies. Detailed studies illustrated the formation of heterojunctions, facilitating electron transfer from the thin, large-area ZnIn2S4 to CoS2, which acts as a co-catalyst due to its inherent conductivity and metallicity. The plasma-assisted generation of vacancies resulted in the formation of numerous exposed metal catalytic centers. Also, both the heterojunction and vacancy construction afforded a narrowed energy gap, an upregulated conduction band, and an enhanced carrier density, favoring electron injection during the electro-reduction process. Thus, an electrochemical platform was established using this material as an electrode substrate for furazolidone (Fz) detection, achieving a detection limit of 1.2 nM. The constructed platform was finally applied to evaluate Fz in actual samples of river water and urine, thanks to its good selectivity, high stability, and acceptable repeatability. In addition, in situ Fourier transform infrared technology was also used to monitor the electrocatalytic process. This work paves the way for preparing low-cost non-precious metal sulfides, which can be used as promising candidates for electrocatalysts in antibiotic testing.

The charge transfer within heterojunctions is a critical factor influencing the overall efficiency and stability of photocatalytic water splitting. In this context, a heterojunction of two-dimensional ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets grown on two-dimensional chitin-derived N-doped carbon (Chitin-NC) nanosheets was fabricated, forming an integrated three-dimensional interconnected network architecture of Chitin-NC/ZnIn 2 S 4 composite with visible light response. This well-designed stable structure exposes more catalytic active sites and promotes the separation and migration of photogenerated charges, demonstrating the excellent photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution and cyclic stability of the Chitin-NC/ZnIn 2 S 4 composite. Under visible light irradiation , the optimized Chitin-NC/ZnIn 2 S 4 achieved a hydrogen production rate of 0.665 mmol g −1 h −1 without the use of any co-catalysts. And the structure remained stable after multiple photocatalytic cycles. This achievement provides a new cost-effective and sustainable methodology for enhancing the efficiency of photocatalytic water splitting.

Waste-wood derived biochar was one of potential cocatalysts for catalyst construction, while relevant reports were scarce due to its irregularity, impeded connection properties, etc. necessitating further exploration. In this work, a waste wood-derived tungsten trioxide (WO 3 )/zinc indium sulfide (ZnIn 2 S 4 , ZIS)/biochar (BC) ternary heterojunction was fabricated for interfacial photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution via a two-step hydrothermal method. Under visible light irradiation, the WO 3 /ZIS/BC achieved a H 2 evolution rate of 4.82 mmol/g/h, which was 9.4 and 2.2 times higher than that of pure ZnIn 2 S 4 and ZIS/WO 3 material. Based on DFT calculations and ESR analyses, the electrons in composite were transferred from WO 3 to ZIS and from BC to ZIS, confirming the function of a dual Z -scheme system. Herein, the biochar was acted as both a structural supporter and an electron reservoir, enhancing light absorption, expanding charge-transfer regions, and improving stability of the ternary composite. This work provides a robust theoretical foundation and technique support for enhancing wood waste recyclability and advancing renewable energy transition from biomass to green hydrogen.

Inspired by natural photosynthesis, the design of novel Z-scheme photocatalytic systems holds great promise for improving photocatalytic hydrogen production performance. Here, we constructed a Z-scheme heterojunction to effectively improve the charge separation of TiO 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 , with the N-doped C layer acting as an electron bridge. The T@NC-A/ZIS-72 heterojunctions demonstrated hydrogen production activity approximately 12.1 and 97.9 times higher than those of ZnIn 2 S 4 and TiO 2 @NC-A, respectively. The excellent electron migration ability of the carbon layer accelerated the photocatalytic hydrogen production performance. Our design introduces a component to provide a dedicated charge transport pathway, overcoming the inherent properties of the material and providing a new perspective for enhancing photocatalytic performance.

The design of a heterogeneous structure for photocatalysts has attracted significant attention. In this study, a step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction was designed using an in-situ synthesis method. The resulting heterojunction comprised 3D microspheres of ZnIn 2 S 4 and octahedral MOF-808 (ZnIn 2 S 4 /MOF-808). During this process, we investigated the impact of the scale of the ZnIn 2 S 4 microspheres on performance by controlling the growth of the ZnIn 2 S 4 microspheres with various scales. The maximum catalytic activity was discovered to be achieved with ZnIn 2 S 4 microspheres of 6 µm when coupled with MOF-808. Compared to pure ZnIn 2 S 4 and MOF-808, the fabricated S-scheme ZnIn 2 S 4 /MOF-808 heterojunction exhibited notably improved photocatalytic CO 2 reduction performance. The performance of the CO yield of the optimized sample could reach 8.21 μmol g −1 h −1 , which was approximately 10 and 8 times higher than those of ZnIn 2 S 4 (0.84 μmol g −1 h −1 ) and MOF-808 (1.03 μmol g −1 h −1 ), respectively. Moreover, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, ESR, in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations were used to study the charge transfer mechanism of the S-scheme heterojunction. In-situ FT-IR investigation established the Carbene pathway as the source of CO production (CO 2 → CO 2 * → COOH* → CO* → CO). This study provides an efficient method for designing an S-scheme heterojunction for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

It is desirable to regulate charge migration synergistically via atomic level decoration because it can construct active sites with both thermodynamic and kinetic advantages in photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) evolution. Here, a mild cation exchange-mediated strategy was applied to anchor palladium (Pd) cations in the ZnIn2S4 nanostructure, achieving an outstanding H2 evolution rate of 1236.4 μmol h–1 (λ ≥ 420 nm) accompanied by an apparent quantum efficiency of 60.06% (λ = 420 nm). Pd dopants act as both active sites and surface chemical state modulators, which help to balance *H adsorption thermodynamically. More importantly, in situ electron spin resonance and in situ XPS analysis reveal that the synergistic electron interaction brought by the Pd–S structure constructs an efficient transfer channel, leading to more delocalized photocarriers to the active sites for H2 evolution reaction. A feasible strategy is proposed in this study to improve the performance of photocatalysts from the viewpoint of Pd cation exchange. Simultaneously, synergistic electron interaction is verified to modulate charge accumulation at Pd substitution sites, providing substantiation and unique insights into the electronic structure modification of photocatalysts.
