Hydrogenation effect on 2D ZnO single crystal/ZnO–SnO2 two phase ceramics and its enhanced mechanism in H2 gas sensing

Kelin Hu,Jing Zhang,Yu He,Rujing Yan,Ji Li

In this work, a 1D/2D two-phase structure of ZnO single-crystal nanosheets/ZnO–SnO 2 nanorods was constructed, and the hydrogen gas sensing properties including selectivity have been enhanced by this low-cost way without noble metal doping. It was proved that hydrogenation effect on ZnO (0001) single crystal facets was the key to forming the low resistance surface in hydrogen gas, leading significantly enhancement in response and selectivity. The response (R a /R g ) to 200 ppm hydrogen gas exceeded 400 at a low operating temperature of 150 °C, response/recovery time in 100 ppm H 2 was only 30 s/8 s. The sensor also has good selectivity for hydrogen detection. The enhancement in gas sensing properties due to dual mechanism of the hydrogenated low-resistance surface and the resistance modulation of ZnO/SnO 2 heterojunctions, which proposed in this paper.

Fabrication of Hydrophobic ZnO/PMHS Coatings on Bamboo Surfaces: The Synergistic Effect of ZnO and PMHS on Anti-Mildew Properties

Jingbing Chen,Yunyun Ma,Huiping Lin,Qingzhu Zheng,Xinxiang Zhang,Wenbin Yang,Ran Li

Poor mildew resistance has limited the application of bamboo materials. In this work, ZnO/PMHS coatings were fabricated on bamboo timber surfaces by hydrothermal synthesis method and hydrophobic modification with poly(methylhydrogen)siloxane (PMHS). The surface chemical characteristics and microstructure of the bamboo before and after modification were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and water contact angle (WCA). The morphology results indicated that ZnO on the surface of bamboo forms flower-like aggregations. The WCA of ZnO/bamboo increased from 65° to 142° after PMHS hydrophobic modification, indicating that the hydrophobicity of bamboo was significantly improved. The original bamboo had poor anti-mildew properties when exposed toTrichoderma viride,Aspergillus niger, andPenicillium citrinum. After depositing ZnO onto the surface of the bamboo, the anti-mildew properties were significantly improved. Furthermore, it was found that after PMHS hydrophobic modification, ZnO/bamboo had excellent anti-mildew properties when exposed to the three mold hyphae, which indicated that PMHS hydrophobic modification had a synergistic effect on the anti-mildew properties of bamboo with a ZnO coating.Keywords:bamboo;anti-mildew;ZnO;poly(methylhydrogen)siloxane;synergistic effect

Synthesis of ZnO particles with multi-layer and biomorphic porous microstructures and ZnO/rGO composites and their applications for photocatalysis

Hao Jiang,Xia Zhang,Wen Gu,Xiaoqian Feng,Lei Zhang,Yijin Weng

Novel ZnO particles with hierarchical and biomorphic porous microstructures were first synthesized through a bionic method and the individual ZnO, pine cones-like ZnO/rGO composites were prepared via ‘one-pot’ solvothermal route. All of above samples are characterized by SEM, XRD, Raman spectrometer and XPS. The results of degradation of rhodamine B indicated that ZnO/leaf exhibited better photocatalytic properties than individual ZnO, the ZnO/rGO with ZnO/rGO ratios at 20:1 shows the best photocatalytic performance. Results indicate that both the morphology design of ZnO through a bionic method and graphene doping can enhance the photocatalytic performance of zinc oxide.

Improving permeability and antifouling performance of polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane by incorporation of ZnO-DMF dispersion containing nano-ZnO and polyvinylpyrrolidone

Song Zhao,Wentao Yan,Mengqi Shi,Zhi Wang,Jixiao Wang,Shichang Wang

A new approach for fabricating polyethersulfone (PES)/ZnO ultrafiltration membrane is demonstrated. Nano-ZnO coated with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was prepared using dimethylformamide (DMF) as the solvent. The obtained ZnO-DMF dispersion was blended as an additive to fabricate PES/ZnO membranes with wet phase separation. The structure and performance of PES/ZnO membranes were characterized by the evaluation of surface pore size, porosity, water contact angle, pure water flux, BSA rejection and filtration resistance. The overall effect of ZnO-DMF dispersion addition on the structure and performance of the membrane was investigated by contrast with pure PES membrane. Compared with a pure PES membrane, PES/ZnO membranes have higher surface pore size, pore density and porosity, as well as improved surface hydrophilicity. The water fluxes of PES/ZnO membranes increased by approximately 210% compared with the pure PES membrane, with little change in BSA rejection. Besides, PES/ZnO membranes were also fabricated with different ZnO-DMF dispersions comprising a fixed content of PVP and different contents of nano-ZnO. The concrete contribution of nano-ZnO in ZnO-DMF dispersion on improving membrane performance was investigated by comparison with PES/PVP membrane. The results indicated that the incorporated nano-ZnO was favorable to the improvement of compaction resistance and antifouling property. The thermal stability of the PES/ZnO membranes was also improved compared to that of PES membrane.

Neck-connected ZnO films derived from core-shell zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)@ZnO for highly sensitive ethanol gas sensors

Tianjiao Qi,Xi Yang,Jie Sun

Based on the neck-controlled conduction model of chemiresistive gas sensors, construction of neck-controlled conduction networks in metal oxide films is an efficient method to improve their sensitivity. In this work, we develop a facile route to prepare the neck-connected ZnO (NC-ZnO) films with controllable diameters of the necked part by the sintering of core-shell zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)@ZnO films. In order to certify the enhancement of sensitivity by construction of neck-controlled conduction networks, their gas sensing properties towards ethanol are systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that the sensitivity of the optimal NC-ZnO film is dramatically improved, and the response value is about 6-times higher than that of ZnO film, reaching up to 124 ( I g /I a ) towards 50 ppm of ethanol. The results meet our expectation and are in conformity with the neck-controlled conduction model, which further indicates the developed approach in this work is expected to open up a new strategy for the preparation of neck-connected metal oxide films.

Antagonistic effect of nano-ZnO and cetyltrimethyl ammonium chloride on the growth of Chlorella vulgaris: Dissolution and accumulation of nano-ZnO

Na Liu,Yipeng Wang,Fei Ge,Shixiang Liu,Huaixian Xiao

The interaction of nanoparticles with coexisting chemicals affects the fate and transport of nanoparticles, as well as their combined effects on aquatic organisms. Here, we evaluated the joint effect of ZnO nanoparticle (nano-ZnO) and cetyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC) on the growth of Chlorella vulgaris and explored the possible mechanism. Results showed that an antagonistic effect of nano-ZnO and CTAC (0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 mg L −1 ) was found because CTAC stop nano-ZnO being broken down into solution zinc ions (Zn 2+ ). In the presence of CTAC, the zinc (including nano-ZnO and released Zn 2+ ) showed a higher adsorption on bound extracellular polymeric substances (B-EPS) but lower accumulation in the algal cells. Moreover, we directly demonstrated that nano-ZnO was adsorbed on the algal B-EPS and entered into the algal cells by transmission electron microscope coupled with energy dispersive X-ray (TEM-EDX). Hence, these results suggested that the combined system of nano-ZnO and CTAC exhibited an antagonistic effect due to the inhibition of CTAC on dissolution of nano-ZnO and accumulation of the zinc in the algal cells.

Simultaneous removal of nano-ZnO and Zn2+ based on transportation character of nano-ZnO by coagulation: Enteromorpha polysaccharide compound polyaluminum chloride

Sun Jianzhang,Gao Baoyu,Zhao Shuang,Li Ruihua,Yue Qinyan,Wang Yan,Liu Siqi

It is confirmed that nano-ZnO (nZnO) has impact on environment and is considered as heavy metal pollutants. It is a new technology that applies coagulation process to simultaneous removal of the nanoparticles and heavy metals. Environmental chemical behavior of ZnO in water, such as the dispersion, aggregation, sedimentation, and dissolution of releasing metal ions, has been systematically studied in this paper. The result shows that three kinds of nZnO state such as compacted sediment, suspended, and released is separately 36.54 %, 40.61 %, and 22.86 %. Enteromorpha polysaccharide (Ep) was used together with polyaluminum chloride (PAC) in surface water purification. In order to study the mechanism of simultaneous removal of residual nZnO particles and Zn 2+ , coagulation process was further applied in this study. The evolution of flocs size, strength, and recovery ability and fractal structure due to Ep addition was systematically studied in this paper. Results indicated that PAC-Ep was efficient in removing nZnO and Zn 2+ , which leads to more than 95 % particles, 50–60 % natural organic matter (NOM) removed, and 35 % of resolved heavy metal ion adsorbing-chelation. Ep was an efficient coagulant aid in enhancing performance of coagulation and generating flocs with bigger sizes, faster growth rates, and higher recovery abilities. Additionally, the flocs formed by PAC-Ep presented a much looser structure than flocs formed only by PAC. ᅟ

Achieving High Carrier Mobility of Fe-ZnO and Cu-ZnO Laminated Homo-junction Nanofilm for Rapid and Highly Effective Photocatalytic Sterilization

Guangrong Qian,Renyuan Deng,Xiangmei Liu,Yi Wang,Jin Huang,Congyang Mao,Chaofeng Wang,Hanpeng Liu,Zhaoyang Li,Shengli Zhu,Hui Jiang,Zhenduo Cui,Yufeng Zheng,Shuilin Wu

The transmission of pathogenic bacteria via the contaminated surfaces of interactive touchscreens is an important route of infection. It is therefore imperative to develop a functional film with antibacterial properties to prevent cross-infection. In this paper, a bilayer thin-film structure composed of iron-doped and copper-doped zinc oxide (Fe-ZnO/Cu-ZnO) is synthesized through a spin coating technique based on sol-gel. The synergistic effects of metal ion doping, combined with the influence of the internal electric potential, during the photocatalytic reaction process, promote the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers. As a result, it notably boosts the photocatalytic properties. The nanofilm is demonstrated to achieve a rapid bactericidal effect (surpassing 90%) under sunlight irradiation. Furthermore, it is shown to completely kill bacteria after 20 min of illumination and to maintain excellent antibacterial performance (surpassing 90%) for a period of 30 days. Concurrently, the thin film displays both exceptional light transmittance (surpassing 90%) and noteworthy benefits, including environmental sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and the capacity for safe disinfection. The thin film exhibits considerable potential for implementation on surfaces subject to high-frequency public contact. It boasts extensive application prospects and serves as a foundational reference for the design of photocatalytic antibacterial thin films.

Nd-ZnO Catalysts for Photocatalytic Degradation of Metronidazole

Qianqian Zhang,Gala Sa,Aiju Xu

Conventional water treatment processes are unable to effectively degrade metronidazole (MNZ), leading to its accumulation in wastewater and posing a serious threat to aquatic environments and human health. Photocatalysis offers an environmentally friendly and stable method for removing organic pollutants. However, zinc oxide (ZnO) has a large bandgap, limiting its light absorption to the ultraviolet region. To overcome this limitation, this study synthesized a series of Nd-ZnO catalysts with different neodymium molar ratios (0.2%, 0.5%, 0.7%, and 1.0%) via a one-step hydrothermal method. UV–vis spectroscopy confirmed that the bandgap decreased from 3.22 to 3.18 eV after Nd doping, while the photocurrent response was enhanced and the e − –h + recombination rate was reduced. When the catalyst dosage was 10 mg and the initial MNZ concentration was 10 mg·L −1 , the degradation efficiency of 0.5 mol% Nd-ZnO reached 94.3% after 180 min of irradiation with a 400 W metal halide lamp. First-order reaction kinetics fitting yielded a reaction rate constant of 0.013 min −1 , which is 1.7 times that of pure ZnO; after five cycles, the degradation efficiency remained as high as 87.7%. It provides an effective photocatalyst for the treatment of antibiotic wastewater and offers important insights into the performance of rare-earth-modified ZnO. Graphical Nd-ZnO catalyst was synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method. The incorporation of Nd introduces an unfilled 4f electronic structure, which can capture electrons, thereby suppressing the recombination of e − /h + pairs and effectively inhibiting photogenerated electron–hole recombination, thus enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency. The 0.5 mol% Nd-ZnO achieved a degradation efficiency of 94.3% for metronidazole within 180 min and retained 87.7% activity after five cycles.

Pt sensitized ZnO microsphere for enhanced hydrogen sensing

Yong Pan,Xiangyang Luan,Yue Jing,Yu Jiang,Li Ding

Hydrogenation reaction is a highly dangerous yet widely applied chemical process. Monitoring hydrogen leakage during this reaction is essential to ensure industrial safety. To address this need, a highly sensitive hydrogen sensor has been developed based on Pt sensitized ZnO microsphere as sensing materials, which was prepared by annealing-assisted one-pot solvothermal method. Compared with the previously reported work, this strategy enables the controlled synthesis of uniform and monodisperse ZnO microspheres, ensuring highly controllable and reproducible precious metal loading, which is conducive to large-scale production. Thanks to higher oxygen vacancy concentrations, enhanced mesopore volume fractions, and a larger specific surface area, the 1 at% Pt-ZnO sensor at an annealing temperature of 500 °C demonstrates excellent hydrogen detection performance, including a higher response value (1,480,000), a lower detection limit (100 ppb), outstanding selectivity (response to interfering gases <1%), and good short-term repeatability (relative standard deviation of 6.98% over 8 cycles). Furthermore, the sensor has also been applied in the hydrogenation process of 2,4-dinitrotoluene for hydrogen leak monitoring, effectively detecting hydrogen leaks at concentrations of 30-40 ppm, confirming its potential for leak detection in typical hydrogenation reaction.

Haolin Li,Jianwei Ding,Shuangfei Cai,Wei Zhang,Xining Zhang,Ting Wu,Chen Wang,Morten Foss,Rong Yang

Using sunlight as renewable resource has stimulated the development of sustainable photocatalysts that can collect visible light. Semiconductor nanowire-based photocatalysts have attracted increasing interest due to their unique optical, electronic, and structural advantages. Here, noble metal-semiconductor hybrid Au/ZnO nanowires have been fabricated by chemical vapor deposition method. The hybrid photocatalysts were well characterized by SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, XPS, UV–visible spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Compared with ZnO nanowires, Au/ZnO heterostructures exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance due to the synergistic combination of Au and ZnO. Optical properties were modeled to support our interpretation of photocatalytic mechanisms. Our work provides a feasible strategy to prepare plasmonic photocatalysts and will also deepen the understanding of the plasmon enhanced photocatalytic performance in hybrid photocatalysts.

Enhanced Antimicrobial Cellulose/Chitosan/ZnO Biodegradable Composite Membrane

Xiaolong Sun,Longfei Yin,Huayue Zhu,Junhao Zhu,Jiahuan Hu,Xi Luo,He Huang,Yongqian Fu

In this study, chitosan and sugarcane cellulose were used as film-forming materials, while the inorganic agent zinc oxide (ZnO) and natural compound phenyllactic acid (PA) were used as the main bacteriostatic components to fabricate biodegradable antimicrobial composite membranes. The water absorption and antimicrobial properties were investigated by adjusting the concentration of PA. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results demonstrated that the components of the composite membrane were successfully integrated. The addition of ZnO improved the mechanical and antimicrobial properties of the composite membrane, while the addition of PA with high crystallinity significantly reduced the water absorption and swelling. Moreover, the addition of 0.5% PA greatly improved the water absorption of the composite membrane. The results of antimicrobial experiments showed that PA improved the antimicrobial activity of the composite membrane againstStaphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli,Aspergillus nigerandPenicillium rubens. Among them, 0.3% PA had the best antimicrobial effect againstS. aureus,E. coliandA. niger, while 0.7% PA had the best antimicrobial effect againstP. rubens. Keywords:composite membrane;phenyllactic acid;antimicrobial activity
