A new method for the facile synthesis of quantum dots (QDs) with MOF as precursor is reported herein. As a proof of concept, ZnS QDs were synthesized by sulfuring zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles under mild conditions without high temperature and highly toxic reagents. Also, ZnS/CdS and ZnS/CuS QDs were obtained through facile cation exchange strategy with the ZnS QDs. These metal sulfides QDs exhibit tunable optical absorption and band gap by modulating the metal components.

Monodisperse CuInS2–ZnS nanocrystals were synthesized in organic solvents and effectively transferred to aqueous phase with the aid of trimethyl(tetradecyl)ammonium bromide (TTAB). TTAB-stabilized CuInS2–ZnS (CIS–ZnS–TTAB) nanocomposites exhibited good aqueous stability and preserved the high luminescence of the nanocrystals after phase transfer. More intriguingly, without any further modification, CIS–ZnS–TTAB showed a striking nuclear homing property, preferentially accumulating in the nuclei of living cells. This novel probe CIS–ZnS–TTAB may have applications in nuclear selective imaging and as a multifunctional drug carrier for nuclear targeted drug delivery. Our work provides a simple but effective way for hydrophobic nanomaterials to achieve both phase transfer and nuclear selectivity simultaneously.

Due to the high importance of transferrin in targeting tumor, the investigation on the functionalization process of quantum dots (QDs) using transferrin is very essential. In this paper, the interaction between CdSe and CdSe@ZnS QDs with transferrin was studied by various spectroscopies. It was found that the two types of QDs triggered the fluorescence quenching of transferrin by the static quenching mechanism. At 298 K, the binding constant for CdSe@ZnS QDs (8.03 × 10 6 L·mol −1 ) is higher than CdSe QDs (2.84 × 10 6 L·mol −1 ), implying that CdSe@ZnS QDs could bind stronger to transferrin. In addition, the values of enthalpy change (∆ H ), entropy change (∆ S ) and Gibbs free energy change (∆ G ) were negative, indicating that the binding procedures between both QDs and transferrin were spontaneous and the main binding forces were hydrogen bonding and van der Waals force. The results of CD spectra indicated that both QDs induced the conformational change of transferrin, which further caused the release of iron ions from transferrin. Compared with CdSe QDs, less contents of iron ions in transferrin were detected after interaction with CdSe@ZnS QDs. Additional cytotoxicity tests showed that both QDs were toxic to Hela and 293T cells, but the cytotoxicity of CdSe QDs was stronger than that of CdSe@ZnS QDs. Moreover, the combination of transferrin failed to promote the cytotoxicity of CdSe QDs and CdSe@ZnS QDs, which is ascribed to the release of iron ions during the interaction process between QDs and transferrin.

The copper ion was detected rapidly by a novel sensing membrane in this paper for its damage to health and the environment. CdSe/ZnS QDs modified polyethersulfone membrane (QDs@PESM) was made by phase-inversion method using a membrane separation technique and quantum dots (QDs). When the sample passed through the membrane, the copper ions in the sample caused the membrane’s fluorescence to be quenched. The fluorescence quenching value of the membrane is used to calculate the concentration of copper ions. With R2= 0.9964, Cu2+could be quantitatively detected over a wide concentration range (10–1000 μg/L). The method’s LOD and LOQ were 4.27 and 14.23 μg/L, respectively. When the CdSe/ZnS QDs@PESM was used to analyze Cu2+ in various real drinks, including well water, baijiu, orange juice, beer, and milk, the recovery ranged from 79.1 to 123.9%, indicating that the CdSe/ZnS QDs@PESM can be used as a rapid, simple and reliable method to determine Cu2+ in various matrices.

We demonstrate that introduction of heterostructure nanoparticles into a polymer matrix is an effective strategy to substantially enhance dielectric breakdown strength (E b ) and thus a high electrostatic energy storage density (U e ) can be obtained, which is highly desired in modern electronic and electrical systems for energy storage and conversion. This is realized through the special “electrical rectification” effect of heterostructure nanoparticles on the charge transport, which stems from capturing and confining charge carriers in the nanocomposites by potential well and potential barrier formed at the heterojunction of ZnO-ZnS nanoparticles. The leakage current of the ZnO-ZnS/polyetherimide nanocomposites (ZnO-ZnS/PEI) is suppressed by the introduced heterojunction, which is accompanied with the simultaneous increase of dielectric displacement and charge–discharge efficiency, resulting in significant enhancement of U e . Notably, the 1 wt% ZnO-ZnS/PEI nanocomposite films possess high discharged energy density at room temperature, i.e. 6.9 J cm −3 at 650 MV m −1 , and even at 150 °C, the U e still remains 3.6 J cm −3 at 500 MV m −1 . Outstanding fatigue resistance over 50,000 charge–discharge cycles at 200 MV m −1 and 150 °C demonstrates high temperature cyclic stability of the heterostructure in confining charge carriers. This work provides a novel and scalable strategy to obtain polymer-based dielectrics with superior energy storage performance.

H2O2 and O3 production through electrochemical synthesis is a promising approach to replace anthraquinone processes and corona discharge. However, the simultaneous generation of H2O2 and O3 and the use of their synergistic oxidation to degrade organic contaminants remains a challenge. Herein, heterojunction bifunctional ZnO/ZnS@C electrocatalysts were prepared by a one-step pyrolysis method. ZnO/ZnS@C-750 can achieve 90% selectivity for H2O2 and 11% Faraday efficiency for gaseous O3. The primary contributor to such a performance was exploited to accelerate the electron transfer on the heterogeneous interface and generate more reaction sites. H2O2 and O3 can also be simultaneously generated in the electrolyzer and the synergistic effect of H2O2 and O3 can be utilized to completely degrade organic pollutants, such as phenol and tetracycline. This work provided new insights into the design of the 2e− ORR (oxygen reduction reaction) and EOP (electrochemical ozone production) bifunctional electrocatalysts for pollutant degradation.

Sialic acid (SA), known as N -acetyl neuraminic acid, is a natural 9-carbomonosaccharide derivative. SA has been widely applied in the early diagnosis of diseases as therapeutic target. However, the abundance of SA is very low in biological samples, which is usually interfered by the similar molecules coexisting at high abundance. Combining the advantages of high selectivity and specificity of molecularly imprinted technology, high specific surface area of mesoporous materials and excellent optical properties of quantum dots, we chose Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots as signal elements, and sialic acid as the template molecule. KH-4-MAPB with recognition ability to SA was synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method using thiolene click reaction as functional monomer. Based on the principle of boron affinity, molecularly imprinted polymers with highly ordered mesoporous structure were prepared, and the structure and fluorescence properties of fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymers were studied. FT-IR, XRD, TEM and nitrogen adsorption–desorption experiments were used to characterize the structure and morphology of the molecularly imprinted polymers. The results showed that the prepared molecularly imprinted polymers had highly ordered mesoporous structure and a large number of imprinted holes, which ensured the specific selectivity of the molecularly imprinted polymers. The fluorescence properties of MIMPs were characterized and analyzed by fluorescence spectra, equilibrium adsorption kinetics experiments were conducted and imprinting properties were recorded under different pH. The above experimental results showed that the fluorescence quenching was successfully achieved when the template molecule SA was captured by the molecularly imprinted polymer. When the concentration of SA was 1.25–100 × 10 –2 g/L, the fluorescence quenching degree of MIMPs showed a fine linear relationship with SA. The correlation coefficient was 0.9946, and the detection equation was F 0 / F − 1 = 0.0215 [CSA] + 0.0241. MIMPs had a high recognition ability for SA, and the imprinting factor was 2.44. As a fluorescent sensor for SA, the response time of MIMPs was 20 min. When the buffer solution pH was 7, the imprinting factor was the largest. Under the best conditions, MIMPs revealed good selectivity and specificity for the fluorescence recognition of SA. MIMPS were also applied to the analysis of SA in real human serum samples with satisfactory results. Graphical abstract

Multi-pollutants environment coexisted organic and inorganic pollutants has become a common phenomenon, seriously affecting water biodiversity and human water security. Currently, the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants by photocatalysis are mostly in own single-pollutant environment, not in multi-pollutants system, where the common photocatalysts cannot achieve efficiently charge separate and transfer with low reactive oxygen species (ROS) efficiency. Herein, we constructed an efficient cascaded Z-scheme heterojunction Co 9 S 8 @defective ZnS/g-C 3 N 4 (C@DZ/N) composed of defective engineering in hollow nanocubes, which achieved excellent photodegradation activity (98.93 % for ciprofloxacin (CIP) and 97.18 % for Cr(VI) at 90 min) in multi-pollutants environment, significantly higher than the hollow cubic with Z-scheme heterojunction in single-pollutant environment (98.07 % for CIP and 98.72 % for Cr(VI) at 140 min). Defective ZnS acts as the core for direct charge transfer and separation to form a unique cascaded Z-scheme heterojunction system that blocks the type II charge transfer pathway to achieve ultra-efficient charge transfer. Furthermore, the structural characterization and ROS experimental results based on multi-pollutants models show that the cascade Z-scheme system greatly facilitates the ROS release kinetics and further leads to more electron-deficient cubic surfaces while increase the directional conversion to singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) in multi-pollutants environment. Further tests of intermediates and reusability indicated its potential for the high-efficient treatment of multiple pollution systems.

In vitro or in vivo fluorescence imaging based on quantum dots (QDs) has shown promise for the noninvasive diagnosis of atherosclerosis. However, simultaneous in vitro and in vivo imaging remains challenging due to the limitation of the current synthesis method of dual-emission QDs (dual-emitting hybrid QDs, and broad-spectrum emitting QDs). Herein, we fabricate a dual-emission (visible region and near-infrared region emission) QDs (ZAISe/ZnS) via the “bottom to up” method of a quaternary inorganic compound for the foam cells and atherosclerosis plaque imaging simultaneously without the intricate size modulation and the strict optical filter requirements. The oil-soluble ZAISe/ZnS is further encapsulated with bovine serum albumin (BSA) to realize phase transfer and ultimately possess the inflammation-targeting properties via biomimetic treatment with MMV (macrophage-derived micro-vesicle). The results first indicate that the as-constructed ZAISe/ [email protected] @MMV could accurately locate the foam cells and conduct long-term imaging of the atherosclerotic plaque, which provides a new strategy for the early and noninvasive diagnosis of atherosclerosis.

The design and fabrication of chiral inorganic materials with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) have attracted great interest. Herein, achiral fluorescent quantum dots (QDs) were found to show CPL activity upon doping into the two-component hydrogels composed of N-[(9H-fluoren-9-ylmethoxy) carbonyl]-glutamic acid (Fmoc-Glu) and deoxyguanosine (dG). It was found that the helical structures could be formed in the two-component hydrogels, and the helicity was dependent on the absolute configuration of Fmoc-Glu. Upon introduction of water-soluble achiral CdSe/ZnS QDs into the hydrogel, the hydrogel could transmit chirality to QDs and make achiral QDs show obvious CPL signals. The mirrored CPL spectra of QDs were obtained when the enantiomeric Fmoc-Glu was used, i.e., negative and positive CPL signals appeared in the L-Fmoc-Glu/dG and D-Fmoc-Glu/dG hydrogels, respectively, which indicated that the CPL signal followed the molecular chirality of Fmoc-Glu. However, when K+ ions were added into the co-assembly of Fmoc-Glu/dG/QDs, only negative CPL signals of QDs could be obtained regardless of whether the L-Fmoc-Glu or D-Fmoc-Glu was used. It was suggested that the G-quadruplex (G4) was formed when K+ ions were introduced into the gel, which is more competitive in inducing the supramolecular chirality of achiral QDs than Fmoc-Glu. This study provides not only a convenient way to fabricate CPL-active QDs via gelation, but also a deep understanding on the competitive chirality transfer in the multi-component supramolecular hybrid system.

Ternary I–III–VI nanocrystals (NCs) without toxic elements, such as Cu–In–S, are promising candidates for biolabeling and bioimaging due to their favorable biocompatibility. At present, it remains a tremendous challenge to directly synthesize high-quality Cu–In–S/ZnS core/shell NCs in aqueous solution at atmospheric pressure. Herein, a simple and reliable strategy that combines the hot-injection method and successive ion layer adsorption and reaction has been proposed to realize aqueous synthesis of fluorescent Cu–In–S/ZnS core/shell NCs. The growth of ZnS shell around Cu–In–S NCs not only improved the fluorescence quantum yield by several hundred times and to the value of 18%, but also effectively enhanced their fluorescence stability by protecting Cu+ in Cu–In–S core from being oxidized to Cu2+. The prepared Cu–In–S/ZnS core/shell NCs with bright and stable fluorescence were conjugated with wheat germ agglutinin and further applied to cancer cell imaging. This strategy here should open new avenues for aqueous synthesis of high-quality nanomaterials with the core/shell structure for broad biomedical applications.

Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) have drawn promising attention due to their low cost and high theoretical capacity for sodium storage. However, the critical issues of TMSs with huge volume changes and lower ionic/electronic conductivity are the major challenges for their practical application in sodium-ion batteries. Herein, we constructed cobalt-doped ZnS encapsulated in an N-doped carbon shell (denoted as Co-ZnS@NC), which effectively alleviates the volume expansion and improves sodium storage performance. The mechanism analysis and ion diffusion kinetics analysis (GITT, EIS, and CV) prove the acceleration of Na+ diffusion by the built-in electric field and buffer carbon layer in the Co-ZnS@NC, optimizing the cycle life and rate capability. The as-prepared Co-ZnS@NC has a high reversible capacity of 456.8 mA h g−1 after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g−1 and superior rate capability (368.8 mA h g−1 at 20.0 A g−1), with Na metal as the counter electrode. Moreover, the assembled full cell shows a high energy density of 214.4 W h kg−1. This work provides insight on heteroatom doping for optimizing the rate capability of TMS anodes.
