Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were successfully fabricated from waste pueraria root residue after starch extraction via the phosphoric acid hydrolysis method by a series of chemical treatment processes including ultrasonic washing, pectin elimination, bleaching, alkali boiling, and phosphoric acid hydrolysis. The high aspect ratio of CNCs with a crystallinity index of 60 ± 4.10% was observed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electronic microscopy (TEM). The TEM results showed that CNCs were rod-like particles with 100–330 nm in length and 2 to 6 nm in width. The average aspect ratio of the CNCs was 40 ± 10. The XRD results also indicated that the crystalline structure of CNC was cellulose I , compared to that of MCC with the crystallinity index declining from 60 ± 4.10% to 48 ± 0.37%. The FTIR spectra showed the resulting samples were the cellulose species. Interestingly, stable colloidal suspensions were determined by the zeta potential measurement . The thermal properties of CNCs were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis , revealing that CNCs exhibited lower thermal stability compared to those of MCC and the raw pueraria root residue. This study provides a cost effective method and mild process conditions for preparing CNCs from waste pueraria root residue.

Bi-functional antibacterial material was prepared by co-grafting N -halamine and quaternary ammonium salt monomers from cellulose fiber. The grafted fiber was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra, and X-ray photoelectron spectra. The N -halamine derived from the precursor 4-[(acryloxy)methyl]-4-ethyl-2-oxazolidinone via chlorination treatment and the oxidative chlorine (Cl + ) leaching behavior were investigated. The antibacterial activities of singly (only QAs-functionalized or only Cl + -releasing) and dual (QAs-functionalized and Cl + -releasing) functional cellulose fibers were tested against Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus . Compared to singly functionalized formulations, the bi-functional cellulose fiber exhibited excellent and rapid bactericidal performance against both E. coli and S. aureus . © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Eggs are perishable mainly due to moisture loss and bacterial contamination. Herein, we developed an efficient and sustainable coating emulsion for egg preservation, which is primarily composed of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), coconut oil (CO), cinnamaldehyde, and sophorolipids. The effects of weight ratios of CO to CNFs on emulsion stability and the crucial properties of the resulting coatings were systematically investigated. Under the optimal weight ratio of 1:1, the emulsion demonstrated excellent stability, with a zeta potential of −50.86 mV, and the coating exhibited a low water vapor transmission rate of 18.19 g mm m−2day−1. Moreover, the addition of cinnamaldehyde and sophorolipids enhanced the antibacterial properties of the coating and the wettability of the emulsion on eggshells. After 4 weeks of storage at 25 °C, the eggs coated with the developed emulsion deteriorated from AA to A grade, while those coated with mineral oil and the uncoated eggs deteriorated to B grade. Overall, this work presents a promising, sustainable, easily scalable, and highly efficient technique for fresh egg preservation, which holds great potential for practical applications in the egg storage industry.

Recently, ever-increasing focus has been on the exploration of high-strength and intelligent hydrogels. In this paper, we demonstrate a feasible approach to prepare magnetic hydrogels with high compression strength, elasticity and elongation by a two-step process. Quaternized xylan (QXH) and cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) could form the ionic crosslinking within the network to enhance the mechanical strength of hydrogels. Subsequently, Fe 3 O 4 nanoctahedra was fabricated in situ within the reinforced hydrogel matrix. Properties of prepared hydrogels including the compressive strength, swelling ratio, magnetic performance, thermal stability, surface morphology and adsorption capacity for heavy metal ions from the aqueous solution were investigated. Results showed that QXH and CNC had the significant impact on improving the strength property of hydrogels. The compressive stress of prepared hydrogel was sharply increased to the limit of the measurement (2.5 MPa), when the compressive strain reached 85%. This hydrogel also maintained 90% original strength after compression for 30 times. The maximum tensile elongation of this hydrogel was 2875%, corresponding to the breaking tensile strength of 73.86 kPa. Prepared hydrogels also showed the good absorption capacity for heavy metal ions.

In this study, novel and stable cellulose-based oleogels with tunable rheological properties were successfully developed for lubrication applications via cross-linking reactions of epoxidized soybean oil (ESO), microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), and isocyanate. This cross-linking strategy not only overcomes the incompatibility issue arising from the polarity difference between MCC and ESO but also enables precise control over the oleogels’ rheological behavior by tailoring the cross-linking density. The resulting oleogels exhibit excellent thermal stability, with an initial decomposition temperature (T5%) of approximately 300 °C. Furthermore, oxidation resistance is significantly enhanced with increasing cross-linking density, resulting in a substantial increase in the oxidation induction time (OIT) from 5 to 79 min at 210 °C. Rheological characterization reveals that the oleogels exhibit typical shear-thinning and thixotropic behavior. The plateau modulus (

The processing and modification of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) are highly challenging due to its highly crystalline nature restricting its broader application. This study used NaOH/urea aqueous solution for the graded regeneration of MCC, which effectively disrupted its dense crystalline structure and exposed the additional free hydroxyl groups. A modified secondary regenerated cellulose derivative (MA-SRC) with a 0.182 degree of substitution (DS) was produced using esterification with maleic anhydride. The sequential regeneration and modification with maleic anhydride increased the specific surface area of MCC from 6.87 to 8.66 m 2 /g. Comprehensive characterisation revealed that MA-SRC had unchanged crystalline phases, with reduced crystallinity and significantly improved hydrophobic properties. However, the difficulty in testing the mechanical properties of MCC alone (requires matrix support for moulding) required the incorporation of polylactic acid (PLA) to investigate the characteristics of the composite material further. Compared to PLA/MCC and PLA/SRC, the tensile strength of PLA/MA-SRC increased by 10.89% and 9.12%, and its elongation at break improved by 35.24% and 33.33%, respectively. Additionally, esterification significantly improved the contact angle. Consequently, these results confirmed that the synergistic graded regeneration–esterification strategy effectively enhanced the interfacial compatibility between MCC and PLA, which provided a novel approach for developing high-performance MCC-based composites. Cellulose-based fluorescent materials are attractive for sustainable applications owing to their biocompatibility and biodegradability; however, their practical utility is often limited by aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) and insufficient functional diversity. Here, we report a versatile strategy to construct aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active cellulose materials via an organobase-catalyzed hydroxyl–yne click reaction, enabling the efficient incorporation of tetraphenylethene (TPE) units into the cellulose backbone. The resulting EC-TPEs exhibit high optical transparency (>95%), full UV-shielding capability, and intense fluorescence, allowing simultaneous UV protection and real-time optical indication. Notably, the fluorescence properties can be precisely tuned by controlling the grafting ratio, enabling multicolor emission and the fabrication of high-resolution fluorescent quick response (QR) codes. Furthermore, secondary grafting of AIE-active MTPAP unit affords an acid-responsive system of EC–TPE–MTPAP with dynamic fluorescence color switching, facilitating advanced multicolor encryption and high-density information storage. Importantly, the dynamic enol ether linkages formed via the hydroxyl-yne click reaction enable an efficient amine-exchange defunctionalization process, restoring cellulose hydroxyl groups without loss of reactivity. This work establishes a reversible and modular platform for engineering multifunctional fluorescent cellulose materials, offering new opportunities for sustainable optical materials and information technologies.

Nano-TiO 2 was synthesized by a sol-gel method using tetrabutyl titanate, anhydrous ethanol, and glacial acetic acid as precursors. Subsequently, a TiO 2 /cellulose hydrogel was prepared by in situ polymerization using cellulose and nano-TiO 2 as the matrix materials, ammonium persulfate (APS) as the initiator, and acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM) as grafting monomers. The obtained hydrogel was converted into a porous aerogel composite by freeze-drying. The structure and surface properties of the composite were systematically characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Through orthogonal array design and single-factor experiments, three critical parameters affecting the photocatalytic performance were optimized: TiO 2 loading (0.5 g), monomer molar ratio (AM: AA = 1:3.5), and crosslinker dosage (N, N’-methylenebisacrylamide, MBA = 0.04 g). Photocatalytic degradation was evaluated by UV-Vis spectroscopy using methylene blue as a model pollutant. The results showed that the degradation efficiency decreased with increasing methylene blue concentration, whereas the time required to reach equilibrium increased. In comparative experiments, the CQDs/TiO 2 /GO/cellulose aerogel exhibited higher degradation efficiency than the binary TiO 2 /cellulose aerogel, achieving 95.8% methylene blue degradation within 60 min. The composites also showed selective photocatalytic activity, with markedly higher degradation rates for methylene blue than for eriochrome black T and norfloxacin.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are widely applied in wearable electronics due to their self-powered sensing capability for real-time monitoring of human physiological and motion states. However, reconciling superior mechanical properties with high-efficiency triboelectric output remains a key challenge. Herein, a Janus-structured cellulose nanofiber (CNF) positive triboelectric foam is fabricated via a dual-layer integration strategy. Its Janus asymmetric structure simultaneously integrates exceptional electrical output performance and remarkable mechanical properties. Owing to huge surface potential difference caused by Janus asymmetric structure, yields a strong built-in electric field within the foam, boosting charge transfer, achieving enhanced TENG output performance with open-circuit voltage ( V OC ) of 108 V and short-circuit current ( I SC ) of 1.35 μA. Compared with original CNF foam-based TENG, the Janus CNF foam-based TENG exhibits 309% and 650% enhancement in V OC and I SC , respectively. Benefiting from the asymmetric pore distribution, the material effectively provides abundant stress transfer pathways, resulting in an improved tensile strength of 1.38 MPa, which shows a 1050% enhancement compared with that of the pure CNF foam. Furthermore, TENG integrated by such flexible Janus foam material provides a promising reference for the construction of high-performance, stable energy harvesting and conversion devices.

To enhance pesticide utilization and minimize uncontrolled release, we developed an environmentally responsive prochloraz (Pro)-loaded nanocomposite, Pro@HMON-NH2–CNC. This system synergistically combines amino-functionalized hollow mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles (HMON-NH2) for intelligent glutathione (GSH)-responsive release, with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) for exceptional foliar wettability and adhesion. Optimized with CNC-3 (aspect ratio ≈ 5.5), the composite exhibited a superior contact angle of 89.8° and an outstanding retention rate of 81.4% on rice leaves. Crucially, the system demonstrated precise dual-responsive behavior: drug release reached 44.0 and 24.8% under acidic (pH 3.0) and GSH conditions, respectively, while premature leakage was strictly restricted to <15% under neutral conditions (pH 7.0). This hybrid strategy effectively integrates the adhesive benefits of CNCs with the controlled-release capability of HMONs, offering a highly efficient and eco-friendly platform for smart nanopesticide delivery.

The introduction of reversible physical
cross-linking constitutes
a viable strategy for fabricating hydrogels with excellent mechanical
properties, efficient self-recovery, and shape-memory capability.
In this study, tannic acid-functionalized cellulose nanofibrils (TA@CNF)
served as the core functional filler and were incorporated into a
polyacrylamide-acrylic acid-stearyl methacrylate (P(AAm-AAc-SMA))
matrix to construct a nanocomposite hydrogel. In this system, TA@CNF
not only served as a nanoscale reinforcing phase but also synergistically
participated in the construction of multiple physical cross-linking
networks through its abundant phenolic hydroxyl functional groups
on the surface. Specifically, the polymeric network was stabilized
by the incorporation of four distinct physical reinforcement mechanisms.
These include (i) nanoparticle reinforcement provided by TA@CNF; (ii)
hydrophobic associations among the PSMA segments; (iii) hydrogen bonding,
which occurs both between TA@CNF and PSMA and within each individual
component; and (iv) multiple metal-coordination bonds formed between
Fe 3+ ions and the phenolic groups of TA@CNF, as well as
the carboxyl groups of PAAc segments. Benefiting from the pivotal
bridging role of TA@CNF across the aforementioned multiple physical
cross-linking networks, the resulting TA@CNF/P(AAm-AAc-SMA)/Fe 3+ hydrogels (THFs) exhibited significantly improved mechanical
properties. The optimal hydrogels demonstrated excellent mechanical
performance, with a high tensile strength (8.31 MPa), elongation at
break (700%), and toughness (39.59 MJ·m –3 ).
Owing to reversible physical cross-links and TA@CNF flexibility, the
hydrogels also showed self-recovery (achieving 52% toughness recovery
within 10 min), outstanding fatigue resistance, and reliable shape-memory
performance. The mechanical properties and multifunctional performance
of these tough hydrogels made them well-suited for use in load-bearing
and soft actuator applications.

Cellulose has garnered widespread attention in the field of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) due to its unique properties. However, constrained by the inherent characteristics of the material, the application of cellulose in TENGs is mostly limited to positive triboelectric materials. In this study, a TEMPO-oxidized nanocellulose (TOCN) aerogel film modified with polycarboxyl silicone oil was successfully prepared and utilized as a cellulose-based negative triboelectric material. By integrating a calcium copper titanate (CCTO)-doped, cross-linked amine-modified TOCN composite aerogel film, a cellulose-dominant TENG device was successfully fabricated, achieving an output voltage of up to 12.5 V. In addition, TOCN was employed as a reinforcing filler for PVDF-based negative triboelectric materials. After undergoing further surface roughening or stretching treatments, the composite material achieved an output voltage of 90 V, exhibiting excellent cycling stability, retaining 99.3 % of its initial output voltage after 5000 continuous operating cycles. This study provides valuable insights into the development of TENG devices based on renewable cellulose-derived components, offering new strategies for constructing high-performance cellulose-dominant TENGs.
