Catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of furfural to furfuryl alcohol is a pivotal strategy for valorizing biomass-derived platform molecules. Herein, we report the design of a yolk-shell MOF-808@hollow mesoporous silica spheres (MOF-808@HMSS) catalyst, where MOF-808 nanocrystals are uniformly confined within the internal cavities of HMSS. Compared to pure MOF-808, the spatial confinement effect imposed by HMSS induces the formation of smaller MOF-808 nanocrystals, increasing the density of accessible active sites. The mechanically robust HMSS shell significantly enhances the structural integrity of the catalyst by mitigating mechanical attrition and suppressing leaching of active components during reaction. Notably, the unique yolk-shell architecture creates a confined nanoscale microenvironment that promotes efficient adsorption and activation of reactants at catalytic centers. Consequently, MOF-808@HMSS exhibits markedly superior performance in CTH of furfural as well as higher reusability and cycling stability compared to pure MOF-808. Detailed characterization reveals abundant Lewis acid sites with a minor proportion of basic sites in MOF-808@HMSS. Selective poisoning experiments confirm that Lewis acid sites play a predominant role in the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reaction, while synergistic interplay between acidic and basic sites enhances reactant adsorption and facilitates i -propanol deprotonation, collectively accelerating the overall CTH process. The catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of furfural into furfuryl alcohol offers a promising route for the valorization of lignocellulosic biomass using liquid hydrogen donors instead of high-pressure H 2 . In this work, a defect-engineered MOF-801 catalyst with abundant Lewis acid sites was synthesized through a formic acid-regulated hydrothermal approach. Competitive coordination between formic acid and fumaric acid favors the nucleation and growth of MOF-801, and enhances the Lewis acidity of the catalyst. Characterization by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, and pyridine-IR confirmed the successful formation of MOF-801 with dominant Lewis acid centers. Using isopropanol as the hydrogen donor, the optimized reaction conditions (130°C, 2 h, 1.0 MPa N 2 ) achieved 99.5% furfural conversion and 94.4% furfuryl alcohol yield. Kinetic analysis demonstrated a first-order reaction with an apparent activation energy of 41.3 kJ·mol − 1 . The catalyst showed excellent recyclability and retained its crystallinity after five consecutive cycles. This study provides a simple and efficient method for constructing Lewis acidic MOFs with coordination unsaturated metal sites for biomass-derived CTH reactions, supporting an upgrading and transformation of platform molecules under hydrogen-free conditions. Graphical A defect-engineered MOF-801 catalyst with abundant Lewis acid sites is synthesized via formic acid modulation. The unsaturated Zr 4 + centers effectively activate both furfural and isopropanol, enabling efficient catalytic transfer hydrogenation to furfuryl alcohol under mild, hydrogen-free conditions with excellent recyclability.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a major environmental pollutant prevalent in areas impacted by mining activities. It poses serious risks to both human health and surrounding ecosystems due to its high acidity and the presence of toxic metals. In this study, AMD was utilized as a catalytic medium for the thermochemical conversion of sawdust (SD), aiming to valorize AMD and enhance the efficiency of the thermochemical process. AMD-treated SD was pyrolyzed under various conditions to examine product yields and their functional properties. AMD promoted the decomposition of hemicellulose and cellulose components in SD, leading to increased production of syngas (H 2 , CH 4 , and CO), and shifted the bio-oil composition toward higher yields of furfural and levoglucosenone (LGO). The biochar produced from AMD-treated sawdust exhibited a mesoporous structure and contained catalytically active species such as Fe⁰ and CaS. This biochar efficiently activated sodium persulfate for the degradation of acetaminophen ( k obs = 0.04 min −1 ), with sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ) identified as the primary reactive species. The catalyst demonstrated high stability, maintaining over 91% acetaminophen removal efficiency after multiple reuse cycles. Overall, this study introduces a novel approach that integrates AMD valorization with the production of renewable fuels, platform chemicals, and functional biochar, offering a sustainable strategy for waste remediation and environmental applications.

The urgent need to replace fossil resources with renewable materials has driven the development of technologies to convert lignocellulosic biomass and its derived monosaccharides into valuable chemicals such as furfural (FF), 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and levulinic acid (LA). This study employs a green and renewable solvent composed of 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) and LA, a supramolecular deep eutectic solvent (SupraDES), to synthesize FF from d-xylose. Microwave irradiation (MI) and p-sulfonic acid calix[4]arene (CX4SO3H) were used as the heating method and organocatalyst, respectively. The SupraDES was characterized by using Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The results demonstrate the potential of this environmentally friendly system for efficient conversion of monosaccharides derived from lignocellulosic biomass, achieving a maximum yield of 70.6% of FF from d-xylose and 29.7% HMF from Dahlia tuber inulin, using heating via MI at 150 °C for 10 min, 150 mg of SupraDES, 3.0 mL of butyl acetate, and 1.0 mol % CX4SO3H. The results of the techno-economic assessment of FF production showed highly positive financial outcomes, with strong economic viability and a quick capital payback.

Furfural residue is a solid waste produced in manufacturing furfural from biomass like corncob, which can be converted into liquid/gaseous fuel and activated carbon via chemical activation. In this study, in addition the pore structure of activated carbon, the impacts of varied potassium salts (KCl, KOH, K 2 CO 3 and K 2 C 2 O 4 ) on the properties of gases and bio-oil formed during activation of Furfural residue was studied. The results showed that the potassium salts suppressed cracking of condensable volatiles into gases, producing more bio-oil at expense of gases. KOH showed the highest activity for cracking, producing the lowest yield of activated carbon (4.8%) without activator with lower degree of crystallization than that K 2 CO 3 and K 2 C 2 O 4 as activators (20.1% and 26.9%). The activated carbon activated with K 2 CO 3 or K 2 C 2 O 4 showed the flaky membrane structure packed with varied layers, but not with KOH as the activator. K 2 C 2 O 4 , KOH and K 2 CO 3 as the activators could promote cracking, deoxygenation , dehydrogenation and aromatization reactions, generating abundant micropores , while KCl could not. In addition, K 2 C 2 O 4 as the activator of furfural residue showed the least energy consumption and environmental impacts, while with KCl was highest. The results herein demonstrated the potential of furfural residue as feedstock for the production of activated carbon and liquid fuels .

P-doped mesoporous carbon material is receiving increasing attention in various fields due to its special physicochemical properties, but the research in the field of pollutant removal is rarely reported. Herein, P-doped furfural residue-based carbon materials (PFRC) with ultra-high mesoporous ratio (93.9%), narrow pore size distribution and large surface area (1769.4 m 2 g −1 ) was prepared by a simple method of fast pyrolysis of phosphoric acid treated furfural residue (FR). A series of characterizations were carried out to explore the physicochemical properties and P-doping mechanism of the materials systematically. With the increase of the activation temperature, the evolution of the P-doped structure is as follows: adsorbed phosphate → P-O-C aromatic → O3P-C aromatic → O2P-C2 aromatic → OP-C3 aromatic . The PFRC500 prepared at 500 °C has the most abundant P-O-C aromatic and P-C aromatic structures, which lead to a higher specific surface area, more developed pore structure and more graphite edge defects than other PFRCs. Methylene blue (MB) adsorption studies showed that PFRC500 had a good adsorption performance with 486 mg g −1 equilibrium adsorption capacity and 97.2% of removal rate (T = 298 K, C 0 = 100 mg L −1 ). The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics were studied. The role of P structure in MB adsorption was explored for the first time. the adsorption mechanism was explored. The P-O-C aromatic , O3P-C aromatic and O2P-C2 aromatic structures are the main chemical adsorption sites, but C3 aromatic -PO is not. This work can provide guidance for the design of P-doped mesoporous carbon materials with better adsorption performance in the future.

The selective hydrogenation of the C=O group in biomass-derivate furfural (FF) over noble metal-free catalysts is challenging in aqueous. Herein, a CoO x /Nb 2 O 5 nanostructure catalyst was synthesized for the hydrogenation of FF to furfuryl alcohol (FA). Under optimized conditions, a 95.7% yield of FA was obtained with a TOF of 155.7 h −1 , and the kinetic study revealed that the reaction followed a pseudo-first-order pathway with an activation energy of 39.42 kJ mol −1 . The catalyst characterization indicated the interaction between Nb 2 O 5 and CoO via the Nb-O-Co bond in CoO x /Nb 2 O 5 -ctr, which prevented the further reduction of CoO to metal Co in the catalyst's preparation process. The catalytic mechanism suggested CoO was the dominant hydrogenation/adsorption active, whilst Co 3 O 4 and Nb 2 O 5 assisted the adsorption of FF. Further, DFT calculations verified CoO was the main adsorption site for FF adsorption in CoO x /Nb 2 O 5 -ctr. Moreover, CoO x /Nb 2 O 5 -ctr showed outstanding recyclability for the selective hydrogenation of FF to FA ever after five runs. This work provides opportunities for the clean conversion of biomass-based FF to FA and infers potential applications of Co for the large-scale hydrogenation of bio-based platform chemicals.

Ethyl levulinate (EL), as a potential fuel additive and versatile biomass-based platform molecule, has been the focus in the field of sustainable chemistry. In this contribution, a series of economic and environmental friendly biomass-derived P doped carbon catalysts were developed in this study for synthesis of EL from renewable furfural alcohol (FAL) in a hot ethanol medium. The carbon catalyst, P-C-800, synthesized via carbonizing the phytic acid at 800 °C, exhibited a good catalytic activity in alcoholysis of FAL to EL. The highest yield of EL could be 79.7% with a complete conversion of FAL at 140 °C in 6 h. Moreover, P-C-800 could be recovered efficiently and reused multiple times with sustained catalytic activity. It was revealed further by the detailed catalyst characterization and systematic evaluation of catalytic performance that both the acid content and surface area of the P-C-800 were crucial for the alcoholysis of FAL to EL.

A furfuryl alcohol resin-based solid acid (SC-FAR-800) was prepared and applied in the conversion of carbohydrates into furan platform compounds in microwave. The results showed that SC-FAR-800 was an irregular mesoporous material containing sulfonic acid groups with an acid density of 3.43 mmol/g, which was quite stable below 200 °C. SC-FAR-800 showed good catalytic activity, and the yield of furfural from xylose could reach 60.46%; the yield of 5-HMF from fructose, glucose, cellobiose and cellulose macromolecules could reach 89.35%, 38.17%, 42.6%, 14.73%, respectively. However, the effect of reaction temperature, reaction time, catalyst dosage and water content on various carbohydrate’s conversion was different. SC-FAR-800 could be reused more than 6 times in fructose conversion, and could be regenerated after a re-sulfonation process. Moreover, the catalytic activity of SC-FAR-800 was super to some biomass-based solid acid. Therefore, this catalyst may be an attractive alternative in the conversion of biomass to prepare furan compounds. Graphical abstract Furfuryl alcohol resin-based solid acid (SC-FAR-800), which has a high acidity of 3.43 mmol/g, was applied in the conversion of carbohydrates in a microwave oven. The peak yield of furfural from d -xylose could reach 60.46%; the yield of 5-HMF from d -fructose, glucose, cellobiose and cellulose macromolecules could reach 89.35%, 38.17%, 42.6%, 14.73%, respectively.

Supported non-noble metal catalysts for the selective oxidation of furfural into high-value chemicals have attracted considerable attention. Herein, an atom-level-isolated, cobalt-catalyst-supported N-doped carbon (Co SAs-N@C) was synthesized through a metal cobalt–tannic acid coordination assembly strategy. The obtained Co SAs-N@C with 7.68 wt% of Co content was qualitatively and quantitatively characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer, and X-ray absorption fine structure techniques. From the structural properties, potassium thiocyanate poisoning, and acid leaching, it was found that the atomic-dispersed CoNx species of the catalyst acts as the active site and plays a vital role in its highly effective oxidative esterification activity. The catalytic mechanism of this reaction is involved in radical oxidation, as confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance spectra. The density functional theory calculations revealed that the reaction pathway proceeds as a hemiacetal pathway. Interestingly, the Co SAs-N@C catalyst also showed satisfactory catalytic activity for the aerobic oxidation of furfural. Unexpectedly, the Co SAs-N@C catalyst still possessed excellent stability and recyclability without loss of activity after five reuses.

In the present study, CuO and Cu 2 O were employed in H-transfer transformation of bio-based furfural (FFR) using methanol as both the solvent and an in-situ hydrogen source , to clearly elucidate the catalytic mechanism of copper oxides (CuO x , x = 0.5, 1) during the reaction. A number of characterization techniques including XPS , H 2 -TPD, in-situ FTIR, etc., were undertaken to track the state of copper species. Owing to the synergistic effect of in-situ generated H 2 , Cu 0 species and CuO x derived Brønsted/Lewis acid sites, FFR could be efficiently hydrogenated into FA and subsequently deoxygenated into MF in methanol. The combined results from in-situ characterizations and experiments show that the FFR-to-FA (FA, furfuryl alcohol) and FFR-to-MF (MF, 2-methylfuran) conversions largely depended on the hydrogen production capability from methanol reforming and FFR adsorption strength over CuO x . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the CuO(200) surface revealed lower free energy and energy barriers for methanol reforming and FFR transfer hydrogenation. This study provides a promising guidance for reasonably designing copper-based materials in the hydro-upgrading of bio-based unsaturated molecules into value-added chemicals in methanol without external H 2 supply.

Considering economic and environmental impacts, catalytic biomass conversion to valuable compounds has attracted more and more attention. Of particular interest is furfural, a versatile biorefinery platform molecule used as a feedstock for the production of fuels and fine chemicals. In this study, the Cr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) MIL-101 were modified by chlorosulfonic acid, and MIL-101 was changed into a hierarchical MOF structure with smaller particles and lower particle crystallinity by CTAB, which significantly improved the acidic sites of the MOFs. The original and modified MIL-101(Cr) catalysts were characterized by XRD, N2adsorption-desorption, SEM, TEM, and FT-IR. The effects of different catalysts, reaction temperature, catalyst amount, and alcohol type on the reaction were studied. Under the action of the MOFs catalyst, a new mild route for the condensation of furfural with various alkyl alcohols to the biofuel molecules (acetals) was proposed. The conversion route includes the conversion of furfural up to 91% yield of acetal could be obtained within 1 h solvent-free and in room-temperature reaction conditions. The sulfonic acid-functionalized MIL-101(Cr) is easy to recover and reuse, and can still maintain good catalytic activity after ten runs. Keywords:biomass conversion;MIL-101(Cr);furfural;green chemistry;heterogeneous catalysis
