Improved antioxidant activity of pretreated lignin nanoparticles: Evaluation and self-assembly

Mingfu Li,Yingchuan Zhang,Hongli Ma,Qida Peng,Douyong Min,Pingjun Zhang,Liqun Jiang

Lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) have gained significant attention for their potential as natural antioxidants . This study investigated the effect of various pretreatment methods on the lignin structure and subsequent antioxidant activity of LNPs. Among four pretreated LNPs, hydrothermal LNPs exhibited the highest antioxidant activity , surpassing unpretreated, acid-pretreated and kraft LNPs, with an impressive efficacy of 91.6%. The relationship between LNPs' structure and antioxidant activity was revealed by 2D heteronuclear singular quantum correlation ( 1 H 13 C HSQC) and 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). 1 H 13 C HSQC suggested the cleavage of β-O-4 ether bonds, as well as a decrease in ferulic acid and p -coumaric acid, which directly influenced the antioxidant activity of LNPs. 31 P NMR demonstrated a positive correlation between the total hydroxyl group content and the antioxidant activity . Besides, an isothermal kinetic model for scavenging free radicals was established based on Langmuir kinetic model instead of Freundlich model. Moreover, multilayer LNPs, based on layer-by-layer self-assembly, were prepared and exhibited remarkable antioxidant activity of 95.8%. More importantly, when blended with pure cosmetic cream , the multilayer LNPs maintained antioxidant activity of 86.7%. These finding may promote the practical applications of biomolecules, e.g. lignin additives in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Lignin-Based Type I Macromolecular Photoinitiator for Fabricating UV-Blocking Films

Yujie Qi,Haoqi Zhai,Xing Huang,Mengquan Shi,Yuxi Zhang,Yuxia Zhao

As the largest renewable source of aromatic feedstock in nature, lignin has good thermal stability, strong ultraviolet (UV) absorption, and mechanical reinforcing property. In this study, a lignin-based Type I macromolecular photoinitiator (macro PI) named DAL-11ene-TPO is designed and synthesized through covalently grafting 10-undecenoyl chloride (11ene) and 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl-ethoxy-phenylphosphine oxide (TPO-L, a commercial small molecular PI) into dealkaline lignin (DAL) skeleton. A series of characterizations were performed to prove that DAL-11ene-TPO was synthesized successfully, including 1 H NMR, FTIR, UV–vis, 31 P NMR, GPC (gel permeation chromatography). The formed active free radicals were monitored by electron spin resonance (ESR). DAL-11ene-TPO can high-efficiently initiate the monomers polymerization upon the irradiation of 405 nm LED. The resulting polymer films showed strong UV-blocking performance and good visible light transmittance. Moreover, the elongation at break of the polymer film containing 0.5% DAL-11ene-TPO is improved by 50% compared with that of TPO-L control group. Furthermore, DAL-11ene-TPO has polymerizable groups, which can be bonded into the network of the polymers, resulting in a high biosafety of the end products. The results indicate that DAL-11ene-TPO can be used as a high-efficient bio-based macro PI for preparing high performance UV-blocking films.

Lignin–based carbon materials with high mesopore rate for symmetric supercapacitors

Fanen Zeng,Xun Yang,Yaning Zhang,Chunyang Li,Bing Xu,Guojun Li

This study aimed to develop more environment–friendly supercapacitor (SC) electrode materials with enhanced performance. Herein, an easy and eco–friendly method was devised for the preparation of hierarchical porous lignin–based carbon materials (LBCMs). During the preparation process, air as an activator favored the formation of mesopore–dominated structures, whereas, static air acted as a protective agent for the carbon skeleton. Additionally, the hierarchical porous structure and electrochemical performance of LBCMs were regulated by changing the reaction temperature and time. The optimized LBCM–800–1 showed a large specific surface area (1471.27 m 2 g –1 ) and mesopore rate of 71.58 %. As an SC electrode material, the three–electrode system showed a high specific capacitance of 194.2 F g –1 at 0.5 A g –1 in 6 M KOH and a multiplicative performance of 88.64 % at 5 A g –1 . Symmetric SC based on LBCM–800–1 exhibits an energy density of 10.4 Wh kg –1 at a power density of 250 W kg –1 and a 100 % cycle retention rate after 10,000 cycles of charging/discharging. The sustainability of the precursor, the simple and environmentally benign preparation process, and the excellent electrochemical performance of LBCM–800–1 demonstrate its potential as an electrode material for wide–ranging applications.

Lipase-Responsive Lignin Composite Nanoparticles for the Delivery of Insoluble Bioactives

Xuefei Bai,Chenyu Liu,Simiao Yu,Yongxin Pan,Farishta Shafiq,Weihong Qiao

Low solubility and chemical instability are the main problems with insoluble bioactives. Lignin, with its exceptional biological properties and amphiphilicity, holds promise as a delivery system material. In this study, glycerol esters were incorporated into alkali lignin (AL) through ether and ester bonds, resulting in the successful synthesis of three hydrophobically modified alkali lignins (AL-OA, AL-OGL, and AL-SAN-OGL). Subsequently, lignin composite nanoparticles (LNPs@BC) encapsulating β-carotene were prepared using antisolvent and sonication techniques. The encapsulation rates were determined to be 37.69 ± 2.21%, 84.01 ± 5.55%, 83.82 ± 5.23%, and 83.11 ± 5.85% for LNP@BC-1, LNP@BC-2, LNP@BC-3, and LNP@BC-4, respectively, with AL, AL-OA, AL-OGL, and AL-SAN-OGL serving as the wall materials under optimized preparation conditions. The antioxidant properties and UV-absorbing capacity of the four lignins were characterized, demonstrating their efficacy in enhancing the oxygen and photostability of β-carotene. Following 6 h of UV irradiation, LNP@BC-4 exhibited a retention rate of 83.03 ± 2.85% for β-carotene, while storage under light-protected conditions at 25 °C for 7 days retained 73.33 ± 7.62% of β-carotene. Furthermore, the encapsulated β-carotene demonstrated enhanced thermal and storage stability. In vitro release experiments revealed superior stability of LNPs@BC in simulated gastric fluid (SGF), with β-carotene retention exceeding 77% in both LNP@BC-3 and LNP@BC-4. LNP@BC-4 exhibited the highest bioaccessibility in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF) at 46.96 ± 0.80%, that LNP@BC-1 only achieved 10.87 ± 0.90%. The enzymatic responsiveness of AL-OGL and AL-SAN-OGL was confirmed. Moreover, LNPs@BC exhibited no cytotoxicity toward L929 cells and demonstrated excellent hemocompatibility. In summary, this study introduces a novel enzyme-responsive modified lignin that has promising applications in the fields of food, biomedicine, and animal feed.

Lignin enhanced shape memory polyimide with superior mechanical property and performance

Qiang Wang,Xin Li,Mengxin Kan,Hui Gao,Shanshan Liu,Xingxiang Ji,Handong Mu,Zhuangzhuang Mao,Zhanhui Yuan

Shape memory polyimide (SMPI) has excellent thermal stability and chemical inertness, and was used in high-end applications, such as aerospace, microelectronics, etc. However, the unsatisfied strength and toughness is currently the key challenges of SMPI. Herein, lignin, a natural polymer, with abundant rigid benzene ring structures and reactive functional groups is used to enhance SMPI’s mechanical properties and shape memory performance. The formation of hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions between lignin and SMPI matrix resulted in the simultaneously enhancement of strength and toughness through in-situ polymerization. As a result, the tensile strength and strain of composite films is increased from 73.45 MPa and 5.2 % to 114.5 MPa and 90.2 % at lignin content of 4 wt%, which are remarkably increased by 156 % and 1734 %, respectively. The shape recovery triggering temperature decreases ∼ 7°C with the increase of lignin content. What’s more, the shape fixation rate ( R f : 99.8 %) and recovery rate ( R r : 100 %) of L/SMPI composite films was also improved, and various complex shapes can be molded. The good thermal stability was well maintained, in which the decomposition temperature ( T d ) is ∼ 507 °C and the glass transition temperature ( T g ) is ∼ 181 °C. The excellent performance of lignin-modified shape memory polyimide (L/SMPI) opened a new ear for high value application of natural polymer, particularly in shape memory material.

Lignin-Based Visible Light-Triggered Nitric Oxide Nanogenerator for Antibacterial Applications

Xiaoya Li,Qian Zhang,Weidong Wu,Jinxin Lin,Yingchun Liu,Liheng Chen,Xueqing Qiu

Nitric oxide (NO) has received growing attention as an effective antibacterial agent with broad-spectrum activity and a low risk of resistance. However, it remains challenging to develop effective, controllable, and biocompatible NO-releasing materials. Here, we report a novel NO nanogenerator (AL-BNN6-PEG) self-assembled by lignin, a UV-absorbing and hydrophobic NO donor (N,N′-disec-butyl-N,N′-dinitroso-1,4-phenylenediamine, BNN6), and PEG-DSPE2000. It was discovered that upon visible light irradiation (450–460 nm), BNN6 can be decomposed by lignin within micellar nanoparticles via a photoinduced electron transfer mechanism in the aqueous medium. Lignin not only served as a sustainable carrier, enhancing the water dispersity of BNN6, but also acted as a biocompatible photosensitizer, triggering BNN6 decomposition with the concomitant release of NO. As a result, the micellar nanoparticles displayed superior antibacterial effects against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria upon visible light illumination. Moreover, MTT assay revealed the negligible cytotoxic effect of the micellar nanoparticles to the mouse fibroblast cells (L929). This research provides more insight into the BNN6 decomposition mechanism and demonstrates a straightforward, effective, and biocompatible strategy for controlled NO-mediated antibacterial applications.

Dual-functionalization of lignin towards superior reinforcement for styrene-butadiene rubber

Jiye Teng,Tao Zhang,Hongbo Zhao,Peiling Zhang,Zhengzhe Wu,Zhiwei Chang,Ming Li,Chenjie Zhu

Developing lignin-based fillers for reinforcing rubber materials has been recently spotlighted. This work modified lignin via a simple amination and a silylation reaction in a one-pot two-step manner. The molecular structure of aminated lignin (LN) was verified using 2D-HSQC, XPS and elemental analysis. The following silylation on LN results in dual-functionalized lignin (LNSi). LN and LNSi show improved hydrophobicity, reduced Hansen solubility parameters and morphology of nanoparticles (<50 nm). Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composites containing 40 phr of fillers were prepared through latex compounding. SBR-LNSi presents comparable tensile strength to the references with carbon black and silica, and enhanced hardness. These remarkable mechanical performances correlate with its high dispersity and affinity with SBR matrix, and the improved rigidity and structuredness due to the self-condensation of silanol groups. This study provides a proof-of-concept for designing lignin-derived fillers with superior reinforcing effect on rubber materials.

Depolymerization of lignin to cycloalkanes using Lewis acid-enhanced bifunctional catalyst

Yiting Lei,Yulong Ma,Yonggang Sun,Liqiong Wang,Yingbo Zhu,Jinpeng Wei,Bolong Zhao,Li Zhu

Lignin, as a kind of biomacromolecule, plays a crucial role in the development of renewable energy sources. However, achieving excellent catalytic efficiency and selectivity towards expected products over a single catalytic system remains a significant challenge. The adjustment of acidic sites is an effective strategy to enhance hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) activity and product selectivity. This strategy facilitates charge transfer and activates substrate migration with the catalyst. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the relationship between the structure and activity of acid sites in catalysts, and construct synergistic Brønsted-Lewis sites. In this study, the incorporation of Ni@NC active phase derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) significantly enhanced both the strength and quantity of Lewis acid sites (LASs) in the Ni@NC-HZSM-5 composite catalyst. This enhancement facilitated the cleavage of C Ar –OCH 3 bonds in lignin oil. Furthermore, the abundant Brønsted acid sites (BASs) present in HZSM-5 markedly promoted the cleavage of C Ar –OH bonds. Efficient conversion of real lignin oil was achieved through the synergistic action of the dual-acid sites, resulting in the conversion of 98.50 % and the C 6+ cycloalkane selectivity of 95.05 %. This study proposed a novel approach to the efficient upgrading of lignin-based bio-oil into alternative fuels using heterogeneous catalysts.

Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbonized lignin nanotubes for supercapacitor applications

Qiqi Zhou,Qi Chen,Wangjie Xu,Feng Wang,Xiaoqing Du,Yufan Zhou,Yulin Zhan,Man Jiang

Carbon electrode material is crucial for the development of electric double-layered supercapacitor in clean energy storage and rechargeable aspects. Although lignin consists the promising biomass based carbon resource for containing higher carbon atom ratio than 60 %, it is still the difficult challenge to precisely tailoring the porous structure characteristics and surface property to facilitate the electrolyte penetration and rapid ion transportation. Herein, the lignin nanotubes (LNT) were successfully synthesized in a convenient molecular self-assembly way, which were subsequently carbonized and activated, with introduction of melamine as nitrogen doping agent, into hetero-atom doped lignin carbon nanotubes (LCNT) as electrode material for supercapacitor. The resultant LCNT exhibit excellent pore structure , and high degree of graphitization. At a current density of 0.5 A/g, the as high specific capacitance as 391.4 F/g was achieved. Furthermore, under symmetric double-layered capacitor electrode systems, the as prepared N, S co-doped LCNT electrode demonstrated a specific capacitance of 28.6 F/g at a high current density of 20 A/g, which presented a practically applicable energy storage efficiency. It has convincingly demonstrate the substantial potential of LCNT as biomass derived carbon materials for electrochemical energy storage devices, positioning them as a promising and competitive candidate for electrode materials.

Valorization of waste lignin: Efficient and steady production of liquid fuels

Xia Zhang,Wenzhi Li,Yihang Jiang,Leyu Zhu,Liqun Wang

Efficient lignin depolymerization is crucial in the generation of valuable liquid fuels and mono-phenols for enhancing the utilization and sustainability of biomass resources. However, the complicated three-dimensional structure of lignin, the propensity for intermediate products to condense, and an overreliance on high-pressure hydrogen in depolymerization reactions pose major challenges. In this regard, we prepared a La and Ru modified Y zeolite (Ru 2 La 0.5 /HYo) and employed isopropanol (IPA) as an in situ hydrogen donor for the efficient conversion of lignin without requiring an external hydrogen source. Ru 2 La 0.5 /HYo selectively activates and decomposes IPA, constantly liberating H 2 for lignin degradation. The Ru-mediated synergy between the L-acid and hydrogenation active sites stabilizes the active intermediate and inhibits condensation, thereby balancing the depolymerization and condensation rates. La coordination with the alumina in the molecular sieve limits Al leaching, preventing zeolite deactivation during the reaction and enabling lignin depolymerization to proceed steadily. After four consecutive trials, no significant decline in activity is unobserved. After a 12 h reaction at 290°C, the oxygen content dropped from 29.69 % to 15.47 %, and the higher heating value (HHV) improved from 25.41 to 34.65 MJ/kg. Extending the period to 24 h resulted in a 93.80 % yield of liquid product and a 63.68 % yield of petroleum ether soluble (PES) product, allowing lignin to be upgraded for liquid fuels generation.

Ultratough, Processable Bioplastics Enabled by Triple Interlocking of Lignin and Cellulose

Jinsong Sun,Haozhou Huang,Wen Wang,Yuan Liu,Xiaoyang Lv,Zheng Yin,Wenjing Bi,Zihao Zheng,Xue Yang,Zhihan Tong,Shi Liu,Jiajun Liu,Jianing Liu,Zhiyi Hou,Zhenqian Pang,Haipeng Yu,Qinqin Xia

Sustainable and biodegradable bioplastics from natural lignocellulose offer a promising alternative to petroleum-based plastics, yet they often exhibit limited toughness and processability due to the inherent rigidity of polymer segments. Herein, we have developed a triple interlocking strategy to fabricate a high-strength, ultratough, and processable Bioplastic (denoted as CEL Bioplastic) from cellulose and lignin in the pulp/paper industry. In this process, we leverage room-temperature esterification of long-chain fatty acids with cellulose and lignin to produce a fully biobased CEL Bioplastic, distinguished by a robust triple-interlocking architecture that combines robust physical chain entanglements, cross-linked ester bonds, and densely packed hydrogen bonds. Physical chain entanglements in CEL Bioplastic efficiently distribute tension, while ester bonds and hydrogen bonds work synergistically to prevent chain disentanglement and enhance energy dissipation. The resulting CEL Bioplastic exhibits exceptional mechanical properties, with a tensile strength of ∼200 MPa, a fracture strain of ∼75% and an impressive toughness of ∼110 MJ/m3. These values are competitive to cellulose-lignin Bioplastic (denoted as CL Bioplastic) lacking long-chain entanglements and ester bonds, in tensile strength (15 times) but far exceed them in toughness (44 times). Moreover, long alkyl substituents exert an internal plasticizing effect, enabling CEL Bioplastics to form 3D structures through simple thermal or water-assisted shaping process. Such CEL Bioplastic exhibits biodegradability, recyclability and scalability (>4m in length), offering a sustainable pathway for producing high-performance bioplastics from natural biopolymers for functional and structural applications.

High barrier composite films prepared from polyvinyl alcohol/lignin/montmorillonite blends

Qianqian Tang,Chen Chen,Mengying Li,Xiaoyang Yue,Xiuwu Liu,Hao Li

In this work, the covalent crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol (CPVA) was blended with montmorillonite (MMT) adsorbing quaternary ammonium lignin (QAL) in an exfoliated state (QAL-MMT) to prepare high barrier biodegradable composite films (QMCPVA) with good performance. Specifically, QAL, QAL-MMT, CPVA and QMCPVA composite films were firstly prepared and characterized by FTIR, XRD and SEM, etc. QAL-MMT existed in an exfoliated state within CPVA and a cross-linking network structure was formed between the two, but the lamellar structure of QAL-MMT also restricted the transfer of CPVA chains. Therefore, when the QAL-MMT additive amount was 12 %, the tensile strength of QMCPVA films can reach 59.9 MPa and the corresponding elongation at break was 82 %. Because the formation of ordered nanolayer structure can effectively hinder the diffusion of water and oxygen molecules, the water vapor transmission rate and oxygen permeability of QMCPVA composite films decreased to 49 g/m2·d and 2.2 × 10–5 cm3/m2·d·Pa, respectively. Moreover, the addition of QAL-MMT can also endow the QMCPVA films with additional antioxidant and ultraviolet shielding properties. This work would broaden the high value-added application of lignin into food and pharmaceutical packaging material field, having a great economic and environmental benefit. Synopsis A high barrier biodegradable QMCPVA composite film with a brick-wall structure was prepared by blending the crosslinked PVA (as a polymer film matrix) and QAL-MMT (as fillers).
