The scarcity of lithium resources makes it necessary to extract lithium from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, there are some persistent problems with the existing lithium extraction methods, including long process, high cost and low efficiency. Comparatively, carbothermal reduction (CTR) method simplifies the process and reduces the cost while still obstructed by the insufficient restoration. This work proposes an enhanced CTR method (E-CTR) to strengthen the selective extraction of lithium via in-situ CO sustained-release and to enrich the remaining transition metals (TMs) into Ni/Co/MnO in the residue. By optimizing the roasting conditions, combined with water leaching, it can achieve as high as 96.9% preferential extraction of lithium along with the fabrication of carbon-based anode of resin material. TG/DTG-MS as well as thermodynamic analyses demonstrate that FeCO 3 and resin play a critical synergistic role in the E-CTR process, with higher efficiency compared to conventional lithium extraction approaches. Molecular dynamics simulations further prove the indispensable role of the CO donor FeCO 3 , powerfully supporting the results of the present work. The economic-environmental assessment proves that the present work is economically competitive and environmentally friendly and further enriches the selective lithium extraction techniques.

Exudate management is of significant clinical value for the treatment of acute wound. Various wound dressings have been developed to restore the function of injured tissues and promote wound healing, but proper exploiting the healing factors inside exudate and achieving anti-adhesion wound care remains a challenge. Herein, we present a novel multi-functional composite dressing (MCD) by coupling supernatant lyophilized powder of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC-SLP) with a sandwich-structured wound dressing (SWD). The developed MCDs demonstrated unique unidirectional drainage capability, stable anti-adhesion characteristics, and improved wound healing performance. The designed SWD with both superhydrophobic inner surface and liquid-absorption ability of mid layer enables the dressings exhibit desired anti-adhesion property to neoformative granulation tissues, favorable shielding effect to exogenous bacteria, as well as appropriate exudate-retaining capability and unidirectional exudate-absorption property. The introduction of MSC-SLP in SWD was demonstrated to further improve wound healing quality. Compared to medical gauze, the synergic effect of SWD and MSC-SLP significantly accelerates wound healing rate by over 30%, avoids tissue avulsion when changing dressings, and produces a flat-smooth closure surface. More importantly, the wound treated with MCDs presents more skin accessory organs and blood vessels in regenerated tissues than other groups. In vivo/vitro biocompatibility evaluations indicated little toxicity, demonstrating the biosecurity of the developed dressings. The proposed method offers great potential in clinical applications particularly for chronic wound treatments.

Periodontitis is a pathological disorder characterized by inflammation and tissue destruction; it is primarily attributed to bacterial infection and immune responses. Nevertheless, existing strategies for drug delivery in periodontal treatment are insufficient to accommodate the intricate anatomical morphology of the periodontium and the complex oral environment. Furthermore, the disordered release of antibacterial agents and bone-promoting substances are not conducive to the natural healing of periodontal tissues, thus resulting in suboptimal therapeutic outcomes for periodontitis. In this study, we successfully co-loaded methylene blue (MB) and poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) microspheres encapsulating Sema3A into a dopamine-grafted sodium alginate hydrogel (SA-DA). Experimental evidence indicates that MB/Sema3A@SA-DA exhibits favorable injectability, adhesion, and compression resistance characteristics, thus allowing it to adapt to the intricate therapeutic conditions of the oral cavity. The prompt release of MB (within 14 h) demonstrates its high antibacterial efficacy against periodontal pathogens upon exposure to 660 nm light, thereby establishing a microenvironment conducive to osteogenesis devoid of bacterial interference. Furthermore, the protracted release of Sema3A (within 28 d) shows noteworthy osteogenic capabilities and facilitates the polarization of macrophages toward the M2 phenotype. In a rat model of periodontitis, MB/Sema3A@SA-DA can be perfectly applied in situ to local periodontal lesions, and the sequential release of MB and Sema3A effectively achieved antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and osteogenic effects. This therapeutic system avoids the abuse of antibiotics, surgical trauma, and repetitive administration. Hence, MB/Sema3A@SA-DA emerges as a safe, effective, minimally invasive, comfortable, and cost-effective treatment strategy with considerable potential for clinical implementation in periodontitis management.

In order to develop a biodegradable agent for food preservation, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) inclusion complexes containing p -Anisaldehyde (PAA) were prepared using co-precipitation method. Physical properties including moisture content, bulk density, hygroscopicity, entrapment efficiency and loading capacity of the inclusion complexes showed considerable results for food applications. SEM and particle size test showed notably difference between the prepared inclusion complexes and the other formulations including the raw β-CD, physical mixture, and the recrystallized β-CD in both shape and size distribution. FTIR , XRD, TGA and DTA were also carried out and confirmed the formation of inclusion complexes and inhibition of the volatility of encapsulated PAA. As a potential preservation agent, inclusion complexes demonstrated a sustained released behavior in phosphate buffer saline (PBS). Comparing with pure PAA, the inclusion complexes presented a better storage stability in low humidity environment, a higher antioxidant activity , and equal MICs against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus .

Poly(phosphoester)-based biomaterials have great potential in drug delivery systems (DDSs) because of their multifunctional adjustability, stealth effect, excellent biodegradability, and biocompatibility. To further increase the drug loading efficiency (DLE) and sustained release ability, a multi-arm block copolymer, poly(amido amine)-b-poly(2-butenyl phospholane)-b-poly(2-methoxy phospholane) conjugated with folic acid (abbreviated as PAMAM–PBEP–PMP–FA), was designed and prepared. Compared to the traditional linear copolymers, this multi-arm phosphoester block copolymer integrates a balanced combination of unique features. As an advanced DDS, the PAMAM–PBEP–PMP–FA based supramolecular micelle provides good architectural stability, low protein adsorption, extremely high DLE, and sustained drug release for chemotherapy and abundant surface chemistry for target engineering. Benefitting from these novel functions, the supramolecular micellar drug delivery system exhibits great performances both in in vitro and in vivo evaluations. Doxorubicin (DOX)-loaded supramolecular micelles PAMAM–PBEP–PMP–FA/DOX are fast taken up by HepG2 cells and inhibit the tumor growth effectively in HepG2-tumor-bearing nude mice without obvious system toxicity. This work not only suggests a targeted sustained release DDS for effective chemotherapy but also enlightens, through a delicate design at the molecular scale, the brilliance of multifunctional PPE-based nanomaterials towards versatile bio-applications.

Camellia oleifera oil (CO) emulsified by cationic cellulose nanofibrils. • Dual stabilization of CO via emulsion interface and gel network. • High-efficiency encapsulation and sustained release of CO by composite system. • Hydrogel retains strong antioxidant activity after 35 days of storage. In recent years, the skincare concept of nourishing skin with oils has attracted extensive attention. Camellia oleifera oil (CO) is a natural woody skincare oil with both skin barrier repair and antioxidant properties. To overcome the instability of its bioactive components, this study adopts a gel matrix composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), tremella fuciformis polysaccharide (TFP) and polydopamine (PDA), loaded with CO Pickering emulsions stabilized by cationic cellulose nanofibrils (CCNF). By combining the oil-in-water emulsification method with a cyclic freeze-thaw strategy, a dual-stabilization structure of emulsion encapsulation and hydrogel network was constructed. The resultant hydrogel integrates excellent dynamic adhesion and mechanical properties, with a water holding capacity of 93.21% and a CO encapsulation efficiency of 80.38%. It enables long-term sustained release of CO for 120 h, and the release behavior follows the Fickian diffusion mechanism. It achieves DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging ratio of 88.1% and 97.14%, respectively, with no significant attenuation of antioxidant activity during the 35 days storage period. The hydrogel also possesses favorable bacteriostatic activity and biocompatibility, with a hemolysis ratio below 5%, no skin irritation and no in vivo toxicity. This study provides a novel approach for the protection and delivery of CO as well as the green design of skincare hydrogels. In this study, a dual sustained-release injectable gel
loaded with Periplaneta americana ( P. americana ) protein–polysaccharide complex
(PPc) microspheres was developed
to achieve prolonged protein release and promote chondrocyte proliferation.
The system was constructed by encapsulating PPc-loaded microspheres
within a cationic guar gum gel matrix. PPc extracted from P. americana residues were fabricated into microspheres
via ionic emulsification cross-linking followed by glutaraldehyde
fixation. The cationic guar gum gel incorporating these PPc microspheres
was subsequently prepared through sequential acid–base neutralization,
exhibiting favorable injectability, rheological behavior, and self-healing
capacity. The optimized formulation (MS-6-gel) demonstrated excellent
encapsulation efficiency and enabled sustained release of P. americana PPc, with a maximum cumulative release
rate of 73.4%, indicating its potential for controlled and efficient
local delivery. Kinetic analysis using Korsmeyer–Peppas and
Weibull models revealed that the dual-barrier structure of the microsphere-in-gel
system substantially retarded protein diffusion, thereby extending
the release duration. Furthermore, MS-6-gel functioned as a multifunctional
platform, not only exhibiting remarkable coagulation ability and potent
antibacterial activity against both Staphylococcus aureus (100.0 ± 1.8%) and Escherichia coli (85.8 ± 2.8%), but also effectively supporting
ATDC5 chondrocyte proliferation. In summary, this dual sustained-release
gel system (MS-6-gel) integrates prolonged protein delivery, chondrocyte
proliferation promotion, antibacterial, and hemostatic functions.
Its unique microsphere-in-gel architecture enables controlled release
kinetics, highlighting a promising nature-derived strategy for cartilage
tissue engineering and biomedical applications.

Sarcopenia has emerged as a major health challenge in the aging population. Whey protein (WP)—rich in branched-chain amino acids—is an important nutritional supplement for mitigating sarcopenia. However, the rapid digestion of WP limits its therapeutic efficacy. Developing a sustained-release system for WP may enhance its effectiveness in mitigating sarcopenia. Herein, a novel “single-protein particle encapsulation” (SPPE) system is developed to protect WP and control its release. Specifically, the “molecular glue” metal–polyphenol networks (MPNs) are assembled onto the surface of individual polymerized WP isolate (PWPI) particles as an intermediate layer and bridged with the saccharide hyaluronic acid (HA) to construct PWPI@MPNs/HA. The results showed that PWPI@MPNs/HA precisely regulates the release rate of PWPI in the gastrointestinal tract. In a murine sarcopenia model, PWPI@MPNs25/HA significantly improves lean body content, grip strength, grid hanging time, exhaustion time, and exhaustion distance. The underlying molecular mechanism involves activation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway and suppression of the muscle atrophy factors MuRF-1 and Atrogin-1 in the ubiquitin–proteasome system via PWPI@MPNs/HA. The SPPE system developed in this study may have broad future applications in protein protection and delivery.

Introduction Tendon injuries are prevalent musculoskeletal conditions in clinical settings, affecting various regions such as the rotator cuff tendons, forearm flexor/extensor tendons, finger flexor tendons, and Achilles tendon. While surgery is an effective treatment, it often fails to balance intrinsic and extrinsic healing processes, leading to abnormal cell activation, proliferation, and migration, resulting in collagen deposition at the injury site. This pathological fibrosis causes severe peritendinous adhesions, posing a therapeutic challenge. Traditional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and implantable membranes have limited long-term efficacy and come with various side effects. Literature indicates that Aloe emodin(AE) can potentially inhibit multiple known pro-inflammatory pathways, including NF-κB, MAPK, p38, and ERK, directly or indirectly reducing oxidative stress. In the field of fibrosis, Aloe emodin regulates the TGFβ/Smad signaling pathway, downregulates extracellular matrix gene transcription, inhibits collagen deposition, improves cardiac function and myocardial fibrosis. Based on these findings, we hypothesize that Aloe emodin may serve as an effective therapeutic agent for improving peritendinous adhesions. Methods This study involved grafting Aloe emodin onto polylactic acid via esterification to create a polylactic acid ‐ Aloe emodin conjugate compound. Using electrospinning technology, a novel polylactic acid-Aloe emodin conjugate electrospun nanofiber membrane (PCA) was developed and characterized, and its role in preventing peritendinous adhesions was thoroughly validated. We validated and systematically evaluated the anti-adhesive capability of the new electrospun membrane through in vitro and in vivo experiments in rats. Results Experimental results demonstrate that the electrospun membrane of polylactic acid-Aloe emodin grafted material exhibits excellent mechanical properties and hydrophilicity, and can achieve localized targeted release of damaged tissues after treatment with lipase. Compared with polylactic acid-Aloe emodin hybrid electrospun membrane (PBA), PCA exhibits superior anti-adhesion properties and maintains longer-lasting therapeutic effects. In vitro studies showed that PCA effectively reduced fibroblast activity, inhibiting their proliferation, adhesion, and PA formation. In vivo experiments confirmed that PCA could effectively wrap around surgically treated tendons and inhibit the TGFβ1/COLIII signaling pathway, significantly reducing peritendinous adhesions in rats, offering a new approach for PA treatment. Discussion In this study, we designed and manufactured a novel polylactic acid - Aloe emodin conjugate electrospun nanofiber membrane. We validated and systematically evaluated the anti-adhesive capability of the new electrospun membrane through in vitro and in vivo experiments in rats. In summary, our research proposed a new approach for the treatment of tendon adhesions.

A long-acting, sustained-release suspension of aprepitant (APT) nano/micron subcutaneous injection was prepared to enhance the bioavailability of APT, achieve a long-acting, sustained-release effect, and improve suitability for patients with vomiting, thereby improving the anti-vomiting effect of APT. APT nano suspension (APT-NPs, 64.65 ± 2.54 nm; PDI = 0.135 ± 0.007; Zeta potential = −28.27 ± 0.91 mV) and micron suspension (APT-MPs, 1.94 ± 0.14 μm, Zeta potential = −44.50 ± 0.85 mV) were prepared by high-pressure homogenization and antisolvent precipitation methods, respectively. Crystal characterisation confirms that APT-NPS retains part of the APT structure, whereas the crystalline state of APT-MPS has undergone alteration. APT-NPs showed a 1.8-fold increase in solubility (17.12 μg/mL) and a cumulative release (72 h) of 85.12 ± 2.33% compared to APT-MPs (56.60 ± 1.40%). The subcutaneous injection of the nano/micron suspension was non-irritating, and APT-NPs demonstrated comparable efficacy and a longer duration of action compared to APT-MPs, administered via gavage, and Orkoping. A single subcutaneous injection into rats resulted in a sustained release for 21 d, and the relative bioavailability of APT-NPs and APT-MPs was approximately 460% and 190%, respectively. It indicates that the smaller the particle size, the higher the bioavailability of APT. This study mechanistically validates particle size engineering as a strategic approach to develop long-lasting antiemetic formulations. These findings validate that a smaller particle size improves the bioavailability and solubility of APT, providing a new strategy for developing clinically long-acting antiemetic formulations.

Background Perioperative pain poses a significant challenge for surgical patients, with regional anesthesia commonly employed for postoperative pain relief. However, the utility of regional anesthesia is limited by the lack of real-time visualization during drug delivery and the rapid diffusion of anesthetics, which result in imprecise targeting and short duration of analgesia. Methods An innovative ultrasound-guided drug sustained-release capsules were fabricated by bioinspired adhesive polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) loaded with ropivacaine microbubbles (APRMs). Ropivacaine release and ultrasonographic experiments of APRMs were conducted in vitro. For in vivo evaluation, a total of 127 adult male Sprague–Dawley rats (200–250 g) were used. Then, incision surgery and SNI-induced neuropathic pain were conducted for adult male rats to verify the ropivacaine release of APRMs in vivo. Ultrasound imaging was performed to confirm the ultrasonic visualization of APRMs. The in vivo fluorescence imaging experiment was conducted for the adhesion property of APRMs. Finally, systemic toxicity and tissue reaction were histologically evaluated. Results APRMs achieved real-time visualization during drug delivery and significantly prolonged antinociceptive effects, maintaining mechanical analgesia for 9 days and thermal analgesia for up to 15 days, whereas free ropivacaine produced only transient effects (mechanical: approximately 24 h; thermal: approximately 4 h). Histological assessments revealed no toxicity or adverse tissue reactions, underscoring the safety of APRMs.Conclusion APRMs represent a novel and promising strategy for pain management by integrating sustained anesthetic release, bioinspired adhesive properties for prolonged retention, and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) for real-time visualization. While these findings are encouraging, further in vivo validation and extended preclinical studies will be essential to confirm safety and efficacy before considering translation into clinical practice.

Introduction Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) hold significant potential for tissue repair and cell therapy. A primary obstacle in their application is the loss of stemness and onset of senescence during in vitro expansion, which compromises therapeutic efficacy. Plant-derived bioactive compounds like quercetin (Que) offer promise for enhancing MSC-based therapies; however, its poor aqueous solubility due to high lipophilicity and phenolic hydroxyl groups limits pharmaceutical utility. Methods To address this, we engineered homogeneous poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres (hPLGA-Ms) using microfluidic technology to encapsulate hydrophobic Que, enabling its sustained release in physiological aqueous environments. Results The results showed the hPLGA-Ms loaded Que (Que/hPLGA-Ms) were uniform, well dispersed. The size of the hPLGA-Ms can be precisely controlled by adjusting the flow rates of two phases. Gene expression analysis demonstrated the hPLGA-Ms delivery of Que enhanced MSCs cellular viability, stemness, anti-senescence, secretion and migration abilities of cells. Conclusions In summary, the scalable and reproducible Que/hPLGA-Ms provide controlled release kinetics and significantly potentiate MSCs bioactivities. This delivery system represents a promising strategy for tissue engineering and regenerative therapies.
