An active structure preservation method for developing functional graphitic carbon dots as an effective antibacterial agent and a sensitive pH and Al(III) nanosensor

Peng Hou,Tong Yang,Hui Liu,Yuan Fang Li,Cheng Zhi Huang

Functional engineering is a crucial prerequisite for specific and wide applications of optical probes. In this study, we proposed a facile active structure preservation (ASP) method to directly develop new self-functional graphitic carbon dots (g-CDs) through a hydrothermal synthesis route by taking ciprofloxacin hydrochloride, an antibiotic belonging to a group of fluoroquinolone drugs, as an example. To retain the functional structures of the starting materials, the reaction temperature is intentionally controlled below the decomposition temperature of the reactants that hold the functional groups. As a proof of concept, we successfully prepared g-CDs with ciprofloxacin-like structures on its surface, as identified by mass spectrometric (MS) analysis. The as-prepared g-CDs not only exhibit effective antibacterial activity towards the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) and Escherichia coli (Gram-negative), but can also optically sense pH in the range from 5.02 to 9.91. Furthermore, the g-CDs can coordinate with aluminum ions to show a chelation-enhanced photoluminescence (CHEP) effect. These results indicate that the ASP method can be promising for engineering CDs with various properties.

Synergistic degradation of sulfamethoxazole in an oxalate-enhanced Fered-Fenton system: The critical heterogeneous solid-liquid interfacial mechanism and an insight in practical application

Chen Wang,Yubei Liu,Mingjie Huang,Wei Xiang,Tao Zhou,Xiaohui Wu,Juan Mao

It was demonstrated in this study that appropriate concentrations of oxalate (Ox) would lead to greatly accelerated electro-generation of Fe 2+ but obviously lower power consumption in the Fered-Fenton system. Depending on the Ti electrode with pristine TiO 2 layer, effects of important parameters on the SMX degradation were investigated in the Fered-Fenton-Ox system. It was found that the heterogeneous interfacial electrochemically reduction of Fe III was critical in the Fered-Fenton-Ox system relying on the surface hydroxyl bonding Fe III -Ox and formation of Fe O Ti bonds. A heterogeneous-homogeneous reaction mechanism was therefore proposed. It included the heterogeneous interfacial electrochemical generation of Fe II -Ox and the heterogeneous-homogenous Fenton oxidation of pollutants. The promotional role of Ox would be also homogenous and heterogeneous, i.e. maintaining ferric at higher pH and forming specific Fe III -Ox complex as well as accelerating the solid-liquid interfacial heterogeneous iron cycle. Furthermore, a continuous-flow pilot study was conducted in treating a printing and dyeing industrial wastewater. As compared to conventional Fenton and Fered-Fenton systems, the Fered-Fenton-Ox system could achieve more efficient COD removal with a relative low cost/△COD, suggesting great advantages in its practical applications for treating real industrial complex wastewaters.

In situ tailoring bimetallic–organic framework-derived yolk–shell NiS2/CuS hollow microspheres: an extraordinary kinetically pseudocapacitive nanoreactor for an effective sodium-ion storage anode

Wenxi Zhao,Xiaodeng Wang,Xiaoqing Ma,Luchao Yue,Qian Liu,Yonglan Luo,Yang Liu,Abdullah M. Asiri,Xuping Sun

Pseudocapacitive electrochemical Na+-storage has been highlighted as one of the exploitable strategies for overcoming the sluggish diffusion-limited redox kinetics due to the effective structural preservation and fast ion-adsorption/desorption at the surface or quasi-surface of electrode materials. However, exploiting pseudocapacitive hosts with a micro–nano hierarchitecture and further achieving competitive pseudocapacitive contributions are still in their infancy so far. Herein, a yolk–shell NiS2/CuS hollow microspherical architecture with superb kinetically pseudocapacitive features was successfully constructed through an in situ hydrothermal sulfidation and subsequent ion-exchange route using Ni-based bimetallic (NiZn) organic frameworks (NiZn-MOFs) as a template precursor. As expected, the strongly synergistic coupling effect and hollow structural characteristic of the NiS2/CuS heterostructure enabled fast charge transfer and Na+ immigration, as well as the release of the mechanical stress/strain induced by the conversion reaction, and not unexpectedly, the NiS2/CuS electrode afforded extraordinary Na+-storage capability, including a remarkable specific capacity of 410.9 mA h g−1 after 750 cycles at 2.0 A g−1, excellent rate capability, and prolonged cyclability in terms of a remarkable 283.4 mA h g−1 even after 4200 cycles at 20.0 A g−1. More significantly, the kinetic analysis demonstrated that the electrochemical charge storage of the NiS2/CuS electrode manifested considerable pseudocapacitive contributions at all rates (90.0% to 96.9%), distinctly outperforming the previously reported NiS2-/CuS-based anodes. Furthermore, the density functional theoretical calculations suggested a fast Na+-transport kinetics and enhanced antibonding state energy level and Na2S adsorption energy due to the electronic redistribution and lattice distortion in the NiS2/CuS heterointerfaces.

Design and Synthesis of an Integrated Nanozyme by Immobilizing Glucose Oxidase on an Iron-Based Metal-Organic Framework for the Development of a Glucose Assay

Xing Yanyan,Chen Meiling,Lan Huining,Zhang Sijia,Xu Jiabi,Hou Xiaohong

Abstract Considering the application prospects of a cascade catalytic system in biomedical analysis, it remains significant to develop a cascade catalytic system for one-step rapid colorimetric detection. Herein, PVP/NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) possessing enhanced peroxidase ( POD )-like activity was successfully synthesized by microwave-assisted and polyvinylpyrrolidone ( PVP ) modification strategies. Then, PVP/NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) and glucose oxidase ( GOx ) were covalently coupled via the bifunctional cross-linker glutaraldehyde, the GOx@PVP/NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) with dual enzymatic functional activities (POD-like and GOx activities) was subsequently synthesized. GOx@PVP/NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) had strong affinities for the substrates glucose, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine, and hydrogen peroxide. Based on this specific nanozyme GOx@PVP/NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe), a one-step colorimetric assay for rapid glucose determination was built. This detection method not only took 20 min to analyze but also possessed a linear range of 10–250 µM with a detection limit of 1.05 µM. Furthermore, the cascade catalytic system was applied to determine glucose concentrations in human serum samples. Compared with commercial blood glucose meters, the proposed method was also accurate and effective, making it a candidate method for determining blood glucose.

Electronic Regulation and Hydrophobic Improvement of the Fe–Pd Alloys by an Ionic Liquid and an Amino Group Achieve High Selectivity of Methane for Methanol

Shisong Yang,Mingyang Lin,Zili Wang,E Yang,Yangyang Luo,Ran Zhu,Zheng Chen,Qian Lin,Hongyan Pan

Selective oxidation of methane to methanol by in situ-generated hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) from H2 and O2 is a promising alternative to the current industrial methods. However, it still faces the dilemma that the slow formation of the hydroxyl radical (•OH) leads to a low efficiency of partial oxidation of methane to methanol. In order to solve this problem, we constructed an Fe–Pd/SIL–NH2 composite catalyst synergistically modified by amino and [BMIM]PF6. Comprehensive characterization and experimental results show that the electron transfer path between Pd and Fe is regulated. Fe2+ and Pd2+ species are mainly distributed in Fe–Pd alloy catalysts. The Fe–Pd/SIL–NH2 catalyst not only successfully coupled the in situ synthesis and efficient decomposition of H2O2 to produce •OH radicals but also changed the local hydrophobic microenvironment of the active sites, thereby promoting the rapid desorption of hydrophilic products. These factors work together to weaken the adsorption energy of HOOH* (from 0.78 to 0.49 eV) and greatly promote the dissociation of HOOH*, thereby greatly improving the efficiency of generation of •OH radicals, which lays a foundation for the efficient synthesis of methanol. The final CH3OH yield and selectivity were as high as 73.42 mmol gFePd–1 h–1 and 87.4%, respectively, which were 2.52 and 1.67 times those of of Fe–Pd/SBA-15–NH2 and 4.87 and 2.11 times those of Fe–Pd/SIL, respectively. This study highlights the surface modification of Fe–Pd alloy catalysts for bimetallic catalysis.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution in Hybrid Hydrogels Coated with an Electrospun PVDF Fibrous Layer with an Unconnected Porous Structure via Multiple Scattering and Water Retention

Jie Yu,Weijia Wang,Lin Lei,Huiqing Fan,Peter Müller-Buschbaum,Qi Zhong

Efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution in hybrid hydrogels containing photocatalysts remains a challenge due to the rapid loss of water and poor light harvesting. To overcome this drawback, an electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) fibrous layer with an unconnected porous structure is coated on hybrid hydrogels to improve the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The hybrid hydrogels are prepared by the thermally initiated polymerization of the monomers poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEGM300) and di(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (MEO2MA) with g-C3N4/Pt nanosheets. After that, an electrospun PVDF fibrous layer with a porous structure is constructed on the hydrogel surface by first electrospinning a solution containing PVDF and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and then removing PEO. To optimize photocatalytic performance, the weight fraction of PEO is increased from 0.2 to 0.5 and finally to 0.8. Simultaneously, the porous structure in the nanofibers switches from an unconnected to a fully connected state. Due to the existence of unconnected pores in the PVDF fibrous layer, the evaporated water molecules from hydrogels can be captured and returned to the liquid state. They act as tiny mirrors to reflect the light scattered from the hydrogel surface. Thus, light harvesting is enhanced. The hydrogen evolution rate prominently increases to 3491 μmol h–1 g–1, which is almost double that without a fibrous layer covering. In addition, evaporation also slows down due to cycles of evaporation and condensation of water molecules. The weight loss of hybrid hydrogels coated with an electrospun PVDF0.5 fibrous layer with an unconnected porous structure is only 43.5% to that without any PVDF fibrous layer. It significantly prolongs the lifetime. For this reason, the present hybrid hydrogel system is well suited for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution in deserts and prairies, which are rich in solar energy but lack water.

Facile fabrication of Fe/Fe5C2@N-doped porous carbon as an efficient microwave absorbent with strong and broadband absorption properties at an ultralow filler loading

Bo Jiang,Wang Yang,Hengxuan Bai,Chaonan Wang,Chong Xu,Zhengxuan Li,Lu Yan,Chengxiao Zhang,Ni Wu,Sai Che,Xiaobai Wang,Yongfeng Li

The challenge of realizing low filler loading and high-performance microwave absorbing (MA) materials is still an urgent issue to be solved. Herein, porous N-doped carbon wrapped Fe/Fe 5 C 2 (Fe/Fe 5 C 2 @NC) nanocomposite is successfully synthesized by a facile one-step calcination of carbon nitride and ferrocene precursors. The magnetic Fe/Fe 5 C 2 nanoparticles are tightly and uniformly anchored on the wrinkled carbon nanosheets . Abundant of voids exist between the three-dimensional conductive carbon network, which can result in a low density and a strong interfacial polarization relaxation with effect. Based on the double attenuation mechanisms of dielectric loss and magnetic loss, the optimized Fe/Fe 5 C 2 @NC-800 possesses a minimum reflection loss value reaching −63.1 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) as broad as 7.3 GHz with an extremely low filler loading of 4 wt%. The Fe/Fe 5 C 2 @NC-800 can even achieve a broad EAB within 4.5–18.0 GHz by tuning the absorber thickness in the range of 2.5–5.0 mm, covering nearly 85% of the whole measured frequency band. This work provides new insights for the development of advanced lightweight MA materials, which has wide effective absorption frequency range and strong absorption intensity at low filling levels.

The “dual-layer sulfur cathode” strategy: An In2S3/Bi2S3@rGO heterostructure as an interlayer/modified separator for boosting the areal capacities of lithium-sulfur batteries

Mohammed A. Al-Tahan,Baoji Miao,Sankui Xu,Yange Cao,Mengyao Hou,Mohamed R. Shatat,Muhammad Asad,Yanwei Luo,Aml E. Shrshr,Jianmin Zhang

The specific energies and energy densities of lithium–sulfur (Li-S) batteries are influenced by various cell parameters, including the sulfur loading, the sulfur weight percentage in the cathode, and the electrolyte/sulfur ratio. An In 2 S 3 /Bi 2 S 3 @rGO heterostructure was obtained by growing indium sulfide nanoparticles on the surface of bismuth sulfide nanoflowers in a graphene oxide (GO) solution via a one-step solvothermal approach. This structure was introduced as a modified separator/dual-layer sulfur cathode for Li-S batteries. The Bi 2 S 3 /In 2 S 3 heterointerfaces act as active sites to speed up interfacial electron transfer, along with the entrapment, diffusion, and transformation of lithium polysulfides. A Li-S cell containing a dual-layer sulfur cathode (thin layer of In 2 S 3 /Bi 2 S 3 @rGO sandwiched between two thick layers of sulfur) and coupled with an In 2 S 3 /Bi 2 S 3 @rGO-coated separator suppressed the polysulfide shuttle effect. The cell based on the dual-layer sulfur cathode technology and operated at a current rate of 0.3C achieved a high capacity (7.1 mAh cm −2 ) after the 200th cycle, giving an electrolyte/sulfur ratio (10 µL mg −1 ) under a high sulfur loading (11.53 mg cm −2 ). These results demonstrate the unique nature of the dual-layer sulfur cathode technique, which can yield high energy density Li-S batteries with high sulfur loadings and low electrolyte/sulfur ratios.

An ultralow dose of the NADPH oxidase inhibitor diphenyleneiodonium (DPI) is an economical and effective therapeutic agent for the treatment of colitis-associated colorectal cancer

Yue Kuai,Hao Liu,Dongyu Liu,Yunlong Liu,Ye Sun,Jiansheng Xie,Jiachun Sun,Yong Fang,Hongming Pan,Weidong Han

Long-term inflammatory stimulation is considered one of the most important causes of colorectal cancer. Diphenyleneiodonium (DPI), an NADPH oxidase inhibitor, can inhibit a variety of inflammatory responses. However, the systemic toxicity of DPI limits its clinical application. Whether DPI can inhibit colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC) at ultralow concentrations remains unknown. Methods : CAC was induced by azoxymethane (AOM) injection followed by treatment with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS), and DPI was intraperitoneally injected (i.p.) in the first cycle for 21 days. Colon tissue was collected and analyzed by western blotting. Immune cell infiltration and macrophage polarization were examined by immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, or real-time polymerase-chain reaction (PCR). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was measured by flow cytometry. Results : Ultralow dose DPI significantly ameliorated the DSS-induced colitis and attenuated the colon tumorigenesis in the mouse model of AOM/ DSS-induced CAC. Mechanistically, an ultralow dose of DPI inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, (tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6), reduced the macrophage infiltration and classical polarization, and induced the ROS generation. These effects were found to be related to the inhibition of the phosphorylation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and nuclear factor kappa B (NF -κB). Conclusion : The present study revealed that an ultralow dose of DPI, with no significant systemic toxicity involved, may be an effective way to prevent the occurrence and development of CAC.

An Inhibitor of NF-κB and an Agonist of AMPK: Network Prediction and Multi-Omics Integration to Derive Signaling Pathways for Acteoside Against Alzheimer’s Disease

Li Ying-Qi,Chen Yi,Jiang Si-Qi,Shi Yuan-Yuan,Jiang Xiao-Li,Wu Shan-Shan,Zhou Ping,Wang Hui-Ying,Li Ping,Li Fei

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most frequent type of dementia. Acteoside (ACT) is a compound isolated from Cistanche tubulosa, which possesses excellent neuroprotective properties. However, the underlying mechanism of ACT in regulating microglia polarization remains ill-defined. Therefore, a computational network model was established to identify the driving targets of ACT and predict its mechanism by integrating multiple available databases. The AlCl3-induced AD model in zebrafish larvae was successfully constituted to demonstrate the therapeutic efficacy of ACT. Subsequently, LPS-induced BV-2 cells uncovered the positive role of ACT in M1/M2 polarization. The NF-κB and AMPK pathways were further confirmed by transcriptomic analysis, metabolomics analysis, molecular biology techniques, and molecular docking. The research provided an infusive mechanism of ACT and revealed the connection between metabolism and microglia polarization from the perspective of mitochondrial function. More importantly, it provided a systematic and comprehensive approach for the discovery of drug targets, including the changes in genes, metabolites, and proteins.

A versatile strategy to create an active tumor-targeted chemo-photothermal therapy nanoplatform: A case of an IR-780 derivative co-assembled with camptothecin prodrug

Wenxiu He,Yue Jiang,Qian Li,Di Zhang,Zhonghao Li,Yuxia Luan

Self-assembled nanovehicles of chemotherapy drug with photothermal agent are regarded as intriguing chemo-photothermal therapy nanoplatform. However, most of the drugs and photothermal agents have poor water solubility and poor interactions to drive the formation of self-assembled nanovehicles, which is a bottleneck of co-assembled drug/photothermal agent for cancer therapy. Here, we proposed a versatile strategy to create self-assembled chemo-photothermal therapy nanoplatform based on the chemical modification of photothermal agent and drug. The IR-780 and camptothecin (CPT) were chosen as the studied models since they are important photothermal agent and anticancer drug, both of which have such poor water solubility with strong itself molecular interactions that they cannot co-assemble together. IR-780 was modified with an active targeting ligand lactobionic acid (LA) to result in amphiphilic IR780-LA while CPT was modified into redox-sensitive prodrug CPT-ss-CPT through a disulfide linkage to realize its assembly. Well-defined nanoparticles (NPs) could be created through the co-assembling of IR780-LA and CPT-ss-CPT. The IR780-LA/CPT-ss-CPT nanoparticles were demonstrated to be an excellent fluorescence imaging-guided, redox-responsive and enhanced synergistic chemo-photothermal therapy nanoplatform against tumors. Specifically, our chemical modification strategy offers a universal way to create self-assembled chemo-photothermal therapy nanoplatform, which solves the bottleneck of co-assembled drug/photothermal agent for cancer therapy. Statement of Significance Self-assembled nanoparticles of chemotherapeutics with photothermic drugs are regarded as intriguing chemo-photothermal therapy nanoplatform. However, most drugs have too poor solubility and interactions to form into self-assembled nanoparticles. We proposed a versatile strategy to create co-assembled chemo-photothermal therapy nanoparticles based on the chemical modification of common drugs. The IR-780 was modified with an active targeting ligand LA to result in amphiphilic IR780-LA molecules, while CPT was modified into redox-sensitive prodrug CPT-ss-CPT through disulfide linkage. Well-defined IR780-LA/CPT-ss-CPT nanoparticles were created through the co-assembling of IR780-LA and CPT-ss-CPT. The nanoparticles were demonstrated to be an excellent fluorescence imaging-guided, redox-responsive, active targeting chemo-photothermal therapy nanoplatform against tumors. Our strategy offers a versatile way to construct smart chemo-photothermal therapy nanoplatform from common drugs.

A Ag–Pd alloy supported on an amine-functionalized UiO-66 as an efficient synergetic catalyst for the dehydrogenation of formic acid at room temperature

Shu-Tao Gao,Weihua Liu,Cheng Feng,Ning-Zhao Shang,Chun Wang

Highly dispersed Ag–Pd alloys deposited on an amine-functionalized UiO-66(NH2–UiO-66) have been successfully prepared via a pre-coordination method. The as-synthesized AgPd@NH2–UiO-66 catalyst exhibited 100% H2 selectivity and a high catalytic activity (TOF = 103 h−1) toward the dehydrogenation of formic acid at room temperature without any additives, which is among the highest values ever reported. Our study further reveals that the synergetic effect between the Ag–Pd alloy and NH2–UiO-66 support play a key role for the efficient catalytic dehydrogenation of formic acid.
