Lipid hydrotreatment to generate green diesel can weaken the dependence on unrenewable fossil fuels. The catalytic performance of Co catalyst is greatly limited by the dispersion and the number of Co active sites. To solve this problem, the Co-Al nanosheet was synthesized by using Co-Al LDH as the precursor. In the fatty acid hydrotreatment at 220 °C, the Co-Al nanosheet attained 98.0 % conversion and 64.3 % alkane yield, much higher than that of the Co/Al 2 O 3 catalyst (83.7 % conversion and 18.7 % alkane yield). From the catalyst characterizations, the excellent activity of Co-Al nanosheet was mainly ascribed to its high Co content and lamellar structure, exposing massive Co sites with high dispersion and small particle size. In addition, the high percentage of weak acidity, strong interaction between support and Co sites, and the improvement of the decarboxylation route also contributed to its catalytic performance. Moreover, the kinetics of octadecanol hydrotreatment over Co-Al nanosheet and Co/Al 2 O 3 revealed that octadecanol hydrotreatment more easily occurred over Co-Al nanosheet regarding the lower activation energy.

In this study, MIL-53(Al) and Sb2SnO5 were synthesized by hydrothermal and precipitation methods, respectively. The doped MIL-53(Al)/Sb2SnO5 showed excellent catalytic properties, specifically for selectivity and sensitivity for isobutanol (IBN). To assess the catalytic properties of MIL-53(Al)/Sb2SnO5, an IBN gas sensor based on cataluminescence of MIL-53(Al)/Sb2SnO5 was developed, and it demonstrated detection of IBN with high sensitivity, high specificity, fast detection, and good stability. The signal response and recovery time of IBN gas sensor were 0.5 s and 6 s, respectively, and a good linear relation was 0.050–2.5 μg ml−1 (R2 = 0.9956) with a low detection limit of 0.015 μg ml−1. Further, the IBN sensor applied in the detection of real samples had satisfactory recoveries (90.0%–108%) with relative standard deviations of 3.2%–6.7%. The developed sensor based on MIL-53(Al)/Sb2SnO5 has great prospects for the practical detection of IBN gas in the fields of environmental analysis, safety monitoring, etc.

In the present study, the preparation of a new MOF material His-MIL-53(Al) and its performance in the adsorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solution were investigated. The original material MIL-53(Al) was directly grafted with histidine to obtain the modified MOF material His-MIL-53(Al). The results show that His-MIL-53(Al) has excellent adsorption performance for Pb(II), and the adsorption process is in accordance with the pseudo first-order kinetics and the Langmuir adsorption model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 50.13 mg g−1, which is much larger than the adsorption capacity of the original material MIL-53(Al). The experimental results also show that the prepared material has good recoverability. Our work demonstrates the applications of His-MIL-53(Al) as a promising material in the adsorption of heavy metals.

Al-doped BaZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 (BZT20) ceramics were prepared by solid-state sintering, and the relaxation degree of phase transition was tailored effectively. The microstructure, dielectric properties, ferroelectric properties, and electrocaloric (EC) performance of Al 2 O 3 -doped BZT20 ceramics were studied, respectively. The results show that Al 2 O 3 doping induces changes in Curie temperature and dielectric properties. When the additive amount of Al 2 O 3 is 1.25 at.%, the Curie temperature drops to around room temperature (RT), and the dielectric loss is lower than that of pure BZT20 ceramics. The diffusion constant γ reaches a minimum value of 1.57 when the Al 2 O 3 content is 1.25 at.%, indicating that a relatively large latent heat would be gathered while there is a phase transition. As a result, an enhanced EC response of ∆ T max = 0.293 K near RT is obtained when the Al 2 O 3 content is 1.25 at.%, which is 1.6 times that of pure BZT20. It is also impressive that a wide working temperature range can be obtained, that is, T span = 73 K for BZT20 ceramics with 1 at.% of Al 3+ ionic content.

TiO 2 is a catalyst that can effectively degrade organic pollutants with the following advantages, low cost, simplicity, and pollution-free nature. In recent years, the non-noble plasmonic metal Al has effectively improved the photocatalytic performance of TiO 2 . However, the current reports are limited to the photocatalytic performance of Al/TiO 2 on the substrate, which requires expensive large-scale vacuum equipment. In this study, monodispersed Al particles were proposed to enhance the photocatalysis of TiO 2 . The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Al is proven by finite difference time domain method (FDTF) simulation. Then, Al/TiO 2 composites were prepared by combining monodispersed Al and TiO 2 . The influence of ligand (glutathione (GSH), glutamic acid (GAG), or 3-mercaptopropane acid (MPA)), Al size (40 to 300 nm), and the ratio of Al to TiO 2 (0.5:1 to 10:1) on the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) by Al/TiO 2 were discussed. The obtained results showed that the Al/TiO 2 composite which were prepared with 200 nm Al particles, GSH as the ligand bridge, and an Al:TiO 2 ratio of 1:1 had the best MB degradation effect. It can degrade 97.7% of 10 mg/L MB in 100 min. The reaction rate of the Al/TiO 2 composite with the optimal photocatalytic performance is k =3.36×10 -2 min -1 , which is 10 times that of P25 TiO 2 . In addition, Al/TiO 2 has a good photocatalytic effect on rhodamine B (RhB) and crystal violet (CV). Therefore, Al/TiO 2 composites with the advantage of high efficiency are a type of potential photocatalytic material that can be used for the photocatalytic treatment of organic pollutants in water.

We report mesoporous Co-Al oxide nanosheets (Co x Al-Ns, where x denotes the Co/Al ratio in the samples) prepared by calcination of CoAl-hydrotalcite and subsequent alkaline treatment. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements show that the prepared Co-Al oxide nanosheets (Co x Al-Ns) are very thin (10–15 nm) and exhibit high mesoporosity (3–5 nm). Catalytic CO oxidation tests reveal that the Co x Al-Ns exhibit excellent catalytic performances at relatively low temperatures: for example, the Co 2.5 Al-Ns catalyst could achieve 99% CO conversion at −98°C. Kinetic studies and experimental investigations indicate that the high activity of the Co 2.5 Al-Ns sample is strongly related to the abundance of active sites associated with the large Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area. The Co 2.5 Al-Ns catalyst also achieves full conversion of CO in tests performed with a gas mixture simulating automobile exhaust gas at 200°C. After loading the Co 2.5 Al-Ns on a porous ceramic substrate, the obtained Co 2.5 Al-Ns/PC shows high activity and stability in CO oxidation process. These features are potentially important for future industrial applications of these catalysts.

The present work determined the phase relations in Si-Al-M-O-C (M = Zr, Mg) systems, involving SiC-Al 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 , SiC-Al 2 O 3 -MgO, SiC-SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 and SiC-SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 -MgO systems by XRD phase analyses of the solid-state reacted samples from powder mixtures of SiC, Al 2 O 3 , ZrO 2 , MgO and SiO 2 . Within these systems, SiC was respectively compatible with other neighboring phases, forming a set of four-phase compatibility tetrahedrons. The subsolidus phase diagrams of the SiC-SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 and SiC-SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 -MgO quaternary systems were presented.

Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZ) ceramics with a garnet-type structure were prepared via the conventional solid-state reaction through different calcining processes. The calcining time and temperature were investigated. The results showed that the ionic conductivity of LLZ samples at room temperature decreased as the calcining temperature increased. The highest conductivity of 2.48 × 10 − 4 S cm − 1 was obtained for the sample with the calcining process at 900 °C. The amount of doping Al was also investigated, which showed different effects depending on the calcining process.

A simple, rapid, and reliable method for detecting harmful gases is urgently required in environmental security fields. In this study, a highly effective cataluminescence sensor based on SiO 2 /MIL-53(Al) composites was developed to detect trace isobutylaldehyde. The sensor was designed using isobutylaldehyde to generate an interesting cataluminescence phenomenon in SiO 2 /MIL-53(Al). Under optimized conditions, a positive linear relationship was observed between the signal intensity of the cataluminescence and isobutylaldehyde concentration. The isobutylaldehyde concentration range of 1.55–310 ppm responded well to the sensing test, with an excellent correlation coefficient of 0.9996. The minimum detectable concentration signal-to-noise ratio ( S/N = 3) was found to be 0.49 ppm. In addition, the sensor was effectively utilized for analyzing trace isobutylaldehyde; the analysis resulted in recoveries ranging from 83.4% to 105%, with relative standard deviations ( RSDs ) of 4.8% to 9.4%. Furthermore, the mechanism of cataluminescence between SiO 2 /MIL-53(Al) and isobutylaldehyde was explored using GC–MS analysis and density functional theory. We expect that this cataluminescence methodology will provide an approach for the environmental monitoring of isobutylaldehyde.

Al-loaded functional lignin biopolymer (Al x -Lbp) catalysts were synthesized using H 2 O 2 oxidized alkali lignin and aluminum acetate via mechanochemical modification without post-calcination treatment. The Al x -Lbp catalysts exhibited higher hydrophilicity and lower surface energy than lignin-free Al-activated carbon catalysts. Unprecedented high yields (58.5 %) of fructose from glucose were obtained over Al 1 -Lbp in ethanol at 140 ºC in 30 min reaction time. Al 1 -Lbp catalyst had Lewis acid sites (47.2 μmol/g), Brønsted acid sites (6.9 μmol/g) and a surface energy of 39.1 mN/m that facilitated glucopyranose ring-opening and gave a glucose isomerization activation energy of 65.2 kJ/mol, which was lower than values reported for Lewis acid-catalyzed systems. Active sites of Al 2 O 3 and Al(OH) 3 formed on the Al 1 -Lbp catalyst in ethanol promoted the formation of an enediol intermediate as confirmed with isotope experiments to achieve efficient isomerization of glucose to fructose. The Al 1 -Lbp catalyst demonstrated recyclability and maintained its initial activity for eight times reuse.

Pervaporation has emerged as a promising technology for the separation of methanol azeotropes. However, developing membrane material to enhance the separation performance remains crucial. In this study, aluminum fumarate (Al-fu) particles were successfully incorporated into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) via in-situ growth method, creating mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) on a porous polyacrylonitrile substrate. These Al-fu MMMs were then used for the separation of the methanol azeotropes. Compared to pure PVA membranes, the Al-fu MMMs exhibited a significant increase in both the separation factor and flux when separating a 20/80 wt% methanol/dimethyl carbonate mixture at 40 °C. The separation factor increased from 9.2 to 13.2, while the flux increased from 376.8 g·m −2 ·h −1 to 928.2 g·m −2 ·h −1 . This enhancement can be attributed to the synergetic effects of size sieving through the pore windows and preferential adsorption of polar solvent molecules by the Al-fu MMMs. Furthermore, the low cost of both Al-fu and PVA, coupled with the facile membrane preparation process, renders this strategy economically viable and practical. Consequently, this approach offers a promising avenue for the development of efficient pervaporation membranes for the separation of azeotropic mixtures.

The detection of ultra-low concentrations of lithium ions (Li + ) is of paramount importance for protecting human health and preserving the ecological environment. This paper proposes a fiber-optic sensor based on lithium/aluminum layered double hydroxides (Li/Al-LDHs) modified optical microfiber coupler (OMC). Firstly, the optimal diameter of the OMC is determined through simulation analysis to optimize the sensor parameters. Secondly, functional group functionalization is employed to facilitate a robust binding of the Li/Al-LDHs to the surface of the optical fiber. Lastly, the efficacy of the sensor in detecting low concentrations of Li + was validated through experimental means. The results demonstrated that the sensor exhibited a maximum detection sensitivity of 334.222 nm/μM and a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.272 nM within the range of 1–10 nM, exhibiting good linearity (R 2 = 0.986). Furthermore, the sensor displayed excellent stability, selectivity and response time, indicating its potential for application in the detection of Li + concentration in aqueous environments.
