To evaluate the barrier properties of the composite coatings reinforced by PDA (polydopamine)-BN@ZnO nano-pigments, the correlation between electrolyte transport characteristics and different nano-pigment contents in the composite coatings was studied. The electrochemical response of composite coatings was mainly controlled by non-Faraday process. A two-layer model based on Young's impedance was established to fit the non-Faraday process of the composite coatings from the 6th day of immersion. The coating resistivity varying with electrolyte transport could be used as a key parameter to describe the barrier properties of the coatings. At the same time, the explanation that different contents of nano-pigments enhance or weaken the barrier performance of composite coatings was given, that is, the nanoconfinement effect of the polymer under the effect of nano-pigments.

The increasing power density of electronic devices demands materials that combine efficient thermal management with autonomous damage repair. In this study, a magnetic hybrid filler (Fe 3 O 4 @BN) was prepared by loading Fe 3 O 4 particles onto boron nitride (BN) surfaces via a coprecipitation method. The Fe 3 O 4 @BN filler was then incorporated into a self-healing polyurethane (SHPU) matrix, and an external magnetic field was applied to induce a vertically oriented filler network. Results showed that at Fe 3 O 4 @BN contents of 20 wt% and 25 wt%, the ordered structure effectively suppressed phonon scattering, increasing the out-of-plane thermal conductivity of the composite to a maximum of 0.76 W/m·K. Meanwhile, the SHPU matrix provided a thermally triggered self-healing function based on the synergy of reversible Diels–Alder bonds, disulfide bonds, and hydrogen bonds. After healing at 135 °C for 10 min followed by 12 h at 70 °C, cracks were completely repaired. The healed composites recovered most of their original tensile strength, elastic modulus, elongation at break, and thermal conductivity, demonstrating high healing efficiency for both mechanical and thermal transport properties. The enhanced thermal conductivity not only improved heat dissipation but also accelerated the healing process by rapidly delivering thermal energy to damaged regions. This work offers a promising strategy for developing long-life thermal management materials.

Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a promising strategy for upgrading phenolic bio-oil into cycloalkanes. Conventional catalysts often rely on strongly acidic supports, which tend to suffer from rapid deactivation. In this study, 4-ethylphenol was selected as a model compound derived from lignin bio-oil to investigate the effects of active sites on an inert support during the hydrogenation and deoxygenation of the phenolic group. Acid-site–support decoupling catalysts, denoted as Ni-HSiW/h-BN, were successfully prepared and were applied in the HDO of 4-ethylphenol to produce ethylcyclohexane. Using 0.5 g of 4-ethylphenol as the substrate and n-dodecane (30 mL) as solvent, the optimal reaction conditions were identified as a temperature of 300 °C, a reaction time of 3 h and the use of 15% Ni-HSiW 0.25 /h-BN catalyst. Under these conditions, complete conversion of 4-ethylphenol was achieved with 100% selectivity toward ethylcyclohexane. When the temperature was lowered to 180 °C and the reaction time reduced to 1 h using 15% Ni/h-BN, the main product shifted to ethylcyclohexanol with a selectivity of 94.4%. A reaction mechanism was proposed, indicating that the combination of Ni and HSiW synergistically enhances HDO efficiency.

The integration of ceramic fillers with high thermal conductivity into polymer fiber insulating paper enhances both thermal conductivity and dielectric strength. Nonetheless, elevated filler loadings augment the filler-matrix interface, thereby intensifying phonon scattering. Additionally, filler agglomeration, driven by van der Waals forces, impedes the formation of a continuous thermal network and introduces defects that facilitate electrical treeing. This research draws inspiration from “brick-and-mortar” architectures, employing high-surface-area thermotropic liquid crystal polyarylate (PAR) nanofibers as the continuous mortar and surface-modified hexagonal boron nitride (TMS@h-BN) nanoplates as the bricks. A scalable papermaking process is employed to fabricate high-thermal-conductivity insulating paper with a high filler content. The three-dimensional network structure of PAR nanofibers spatially confines the h-BN nanoplates, effectively preventing their agglomeration. Furthermore, π-π conjugation between the aromatic structures of PAR and the benzene rings of h-BN enhances interfacial bonding by facilitating the diffusion and entanglement of PAR molecular chains during thermal pressing. This results in a dense interfacial structure that provides an efficient pathway for phonon transport, thereby enhancing thermal conductivity and minimizing electrical distortion. At a filler loading of 70 wt%, the TMS@h-BN/PAR nanocomposite paper exhibits superior mechanical performance and flexibility, achieving an in-plane thermal conductivity of 14.19 W·m −1 ·K −1 and a breakdown field strength of 111.17 kV/mm, which represent significant improvements over commercial insulating paper. Additionally, it demonstrates exceptional thermal stability and flame retardancy, with minimal dimensional changes following heat treatment.

The potential prospect of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) in the fields of polymer composites is severely limited by undesirable exfoliation efficiency and chemical inertness. Herein, bio-based dopamine was employed toward exfoliating bulk h-BN with hydrogen bond action and imparting a highly-active surface. With assistance of polypodamine, SnO 2 nanoparticles were in-situ synthesized and strengthened the interfacial interaction between h-BN and epoxy (EP) matrix. The integrated function of metal oxide/h-BN toward flame retardant and smoke suppression of polymer materials was firstly studied and obtained, in term of reduced peak heat release rate (decreased by 41.1%), lower total heat release (decreased by 30.1%), and suppressed total smoke production (decreased by 21.6%). In addition, the mechanism for enhancements on flame retardant and smoke suppression of EP composites was systematically investigated. Such a design route simultaneously achieves the exfoliation and functionalization of h-BN, thus offering an active platform for further functionalization modification.

A composite ceramic coating containing h-BN particles was prepared on the ZL109 alloy via plasma electrolytic oxidation. The h-BN particles were modified by Polyethylene glycol to improve the dispersibility. The results revealed that the h-BN particles in the electrolyte were inertly incorporated into the coating. Meanwhile, the incorporation of h-BN particles can reduce the porosity and slightly increase the roughness of the composite ceramic coating. Furthermore, the growth rate of the coating and the conversion of γ-Al 2 O 3 and α-Al 2 O 3 were promoted by the incorporation of h-BN particles via the change of the current. In addition, due to the presence of h-BN particles, the composite ceramic coating had a lower friction coefficient and a lower wear rate under dry sliding condition.

Corrosion in harsh environments causes global economic losses exceeding 3 trillion US dollars annually. Traditional silicone epoxy (SE) coatings are prone to failure due to insufficient physical barrier properties and lack of active protection. In this study, cerium dioxide (CeO2) was in situ grown on the surface of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) mediated by polydopamine (PDA) to prepare BN-PDA-CeO2ternary nanocomposites, which were then incorporated into SE coatings to construct a multi-scale synergistic corrosion protection system. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the successful preparation of the composites, where PDA inhibited the agglomeration of h-BN and CeO2was uniformly loaded. Electrochemical tests showed that the corrosion inhibition efficiency of the extract of this composite for 2024 aluminum alloy reached 99.96%. After immersing the composite coating in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 120 days, the coating resistance (Rc) and charge transfer resistance (Rct) reached 8.5 × 109Ω·cm2and 1.2 × 1010Ω·cm2, respectively, which were much higher than those of pure SE coatings and coatings filled with single/binary fillers. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed the synergistic mechanisms: PDA enhanced interfacial dispersion (adsorption energy of −0.58 eV), CeO2captured Cl−(adsorption energy of −4.22 eV), and Ce3+formed a passive film. This study provides key technical and theoretical support for the design of long-term corrosion protection coatings in harsh environments such as marine and petrochemical industries.

In this study, h-BN@PDA@TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles were prepared and used as functional fillers to prepare PVA nanocomposites, and the effects of hybrid particles on PVA thermal conductivity and flame retardant properties were studied. The results showed that hybrid particles could significantly improve the thermal conductivity and flame retardant performance of PVA composites, and effectively inhibit the release of toxic gases such as combustible pyrolysis products and CO, which enhanced the fire safety of PVA composites. When the addition amount of hybrid particles is 5 wt%, the thermal conductivity of PVA composites is 239.1% higher than that of the pure PVA and the corresponding temperature of PVA composites with a mass loss of 5 wt% was 16.2°C higher than that of the pure PVA. This is due to the barrier effect of h-BN and the protective effect of dense carbon layer catalyzed by TiO2.

The occurrence of nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) in sediments has been widely reported, but research on NPAH bioavailability is lacking. In this study, a self-made zeolite imidazolate framework-8/hexagonal boron nitride (ZIF-8/h-BN) solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber and commercial Tenax are compared as efficient tools to predict the bioavailability of NPAHs in sediments with bioassays using Cipangopaludina chinensis . During the process of SPME, the NPAH concentrations on the ZIF-8/h-BN fibers reached extraction equilibrium after 72 h. The fiber extraction of NPAHs in sediments was well-fitted by the pseudo first-order kinetic model with a rate constant of 2 × 10 −2 h −1 (R 2 > 0.98). The extraction rates ranking of NPAHs in sediments was 2-nitrobiphenyl>1-nitropyrene>5-nitroacenaphthene>2-nitrofluorene. Compared with SPME, NPAH concentrations reached equilibrium after 168 h for the Tenax extraction. The orders of magnitude of fast, slow, and very slow desorption rate constants were 10 −1 , 10 −2 , and 10 −4 , respectively. At extraction equilibrium (168 h), the SPME was close to the bioavailability of the NPAHs in sediments to Cipangopaludina chinensis with a slope statistically approximated to one. In addition, the linear regression for SPME (R 2 = 0.7285) was slightly higher than that of the Tenax extraction (R 2 = 0.7168) over a short time (6 h). This could be because the coating material of ZIF-8/h-BN can rapidly adsorb freely dissolved NPAHs, and the SPME fibers can accurately predict the bioaccumulated concentrations of NPAHs in exposed organisms by measuring the concentration of NPAHs in the pore water of sediment. This study provides a time-saving and easy procedure to predict the bioavailability of NPAHs in sediments.

Nano-filler reinforced polymer-based composites have attracted extensive attention in tribology; however, to date, it is still challenging to construct a favorable lubricating system with excellent compatibility, lubricity and durability using nano-filler reinforced polymer-based composites. Herein, sulfonated boron nitride nano-sheets (h-BN@PSDA) are prepared and used as nano-fillers for epoxy resins (EPs), to improve friction and wear along with thermal conductivity. Furthermore, inspired by the lubricating principle and structure of snail mucus, a solvent-free carbon dot-based nanofluid (F-CDs) is fabricated and used for the first time as the lubricant for h-BN@PSDA/EPs. Both poly (4-styrene sulfonate) and polyether amine grafted on the surface of F-CDs contribute to branched structures and multiple interfacial absorption effects. Extraordinarily low friction and wear are detected after long-term sliding. The average coefficient of friction and wear rate of h-BN@PSDA/EPs composites are reduced by 95.25% and 99.42% respectively, in the presence of the F-CD nanofluid, compared to that of EPs. Besides, the added h-BN nano-sheets increase the thermal conductivity (TC) of EPs from 0.178 to 0.194 W (m−1 K−1). The distinguished lubrication performances are likely due to the formation of a hybrid nanostructure of 0D F-CDs and 2D h-BN@PSDA together with the “rolling–sliding” and “self-mending” effects of added F-CDs.

As an excellent two-dimensional insulating material with high thermal conductivity , high temperature stability and high hardness, hexagonal boron nitride(h-BN) is widely applied in semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace, metallurgical manufacturing and other cutting-edge fields. However, the unique surface structure of h-BN leads to poor lubricity and easy agglomeration, which limits the application of h-BN especially in the field of electronic packaging. To address key issues boosted above, this study designed and prepared the BN@Fe 3 O 4 magnetic insulating particles and doped it into the reduced viscosity epoxy resin to prepare the composites. By selecting appropriate external magnetic field strength and BN@Fe 3 O 4 particles’ content, a novel 3D structure of fillers like dominoes in epoxy resin composite was successfully constructed. The microstructure of the BN@Fe 3 O 4 particles and composites were analyzed, the thermal conductivity, the mechanical and the electrical properties of composites were simultaneously tested. Results manifested that the core-shell structures with BN as core and Fe 3 O 4 as shell was successfully prepared, linking through the PDA middle layer between the BN core and Fe 3 O 4 shell. Under the influence of magnetic orientation, the BN@Fe 3 O 4 magnetic particles were preferred an out-of-plane oriented in the epoxy resin composites, resulted an enormously enhanced on thermal conductivity of composites. At a magnetic field strength of 60 mT and 25 vol% BN@Fe 3 O 4 content, the thermal conductivity of BN@Fe 3 O 4 /EP composites is as lofty as 1.832 W/(m K), which is 1023.46% higher than that of pure epoxy resin. Meanwhile, the thermal stability has also been slightly improved, the elastic modulus and insulation performances remain at the same level.

Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) is a crucial factor that determines the structure and performance of a supported metal catalyst. Herein, the SMSI effect of Rh nanoparticle catalyst supported on h-BN is investigated in the dry reforming of methane (DRM) reactions with different CO 2 /CH 4 ratios. The catalyst characterization results demonstrate that the SMSI effect allows the Rh nanoparticles to be encapsulated by BO x overlayers under DRM reaction conditions (CO 2 /CH 4 = 1/1), which prevents the interaction between the reactants and metal centers for causing rapid deactivation. By increasing the partial pressure of CO 2 (CO 2 /CH 4 = 3/1), Rh/BN exhibits significantly enhanced activity and long-term stability in the DRM reaction. CO 2 or H 2 O in the reactive atmosphere can effectively etch the BO x overlayers for steadily exposing the active Rh-BN interface sites, as evidenced by the characterization. This observation extends the understanding of the SMSI effect at the interfaces between metal and non-oxide support.
