Cu-Fe LDHs/Bi2WO6 composite for superior photo-Fenton Rhodamine B removal through combination of photogenerated electrons and multivalent bimetal redox for accelerating Fe3+/Fe2+ cycles

Yun Ji,Zhelin Song,Yu Xu,Yanlin Zhang

In this work, typical refractory pollutant Rhodamine B (RhB) was effectively degraded by Cu-Fe LDHs/Bi 2 WO 6 composite in the photo-Fenton process. The hydrothermal synthesis of Cu-Fe LDHs/Bi 2 WO 6 composite with ethylene glycol as reductant created the multivalent coexistence of the same metal element to achieve a self-circle redox reaction between metals. The photo-Fenton process by Cu-Fe LDHs/Bi 2 WO 6 incredibly eliminated the limitation of strong acidic pH value applied in the Fenton process. ∙OH generated by Cu-Fe LDHs/Bi 2 WO 6 was 5 times that of Cu-Fe LDHs during the photo-Fenton process. The complete degradation of RhB in the photo-Fenton process under the optimal conditions of initial pH= 6, 5 mmol/L of H 2 O 2 , and 1 g/L of Cu-Fe LDHs/Bi 2 WO 6 dosage was far more than 46% of RhB degradation in the photocatalytic process and 76% of RhB degradation in the Fenton process. Cu-Fe LDHs/Bi 2 WO 6 composite exhibited the excellent redox ability, electron transfer ability and reusability during the photo-Fenton process. The acceleration of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycles in the Cu-Fe LDHs/Bi 2 WO 6 /H 2 O 2 /Vis system was mainly ascribable to the combination of efficient transfer of photogenerated electrons and self-circle redox of Fe 3+ /Cu + . It is expected for the promising application of multivalent bimetallic photo-Fenton catalysts and rendering enlightenments for photo-Fenton catalytic oxidation reaction.

Rational design of a novel magnetically recoverable and environment-friendly Z-scheme SnFe2O4/Bi2WO6 heterojunction with enhanced photocatalytic performance for rhodamine B degradation and toxicity elimination

J. Ma,B. Zhao,N. Shao,P. Jiang,H. Yang,B. Li

Photocatalysis is considered a promising strategy for environmental remediation, and the preparation of an efficient, stable, and green photocatalyst is a current urgent need. In this work, a magnetically recoverable SnFe 2 O 4 /Bi 2 WO 6 (SFO/BWO) Z-scheme heterojunction was successfully prepared by a simple one-step hydrothermal process. The prepared 7.5%SFO/BWO nanocomposite exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance, with a degradation efficiency of 96.12% for Rhodamine B (RhB) within 120 min, which were respectively 1.64 and 2.07 times greater than that of pure Bi 2 WO 6 (BWO) and SnFe 2 O 4 (SFO). This obvious improvement in the photocatalytic performance benefited from the increase in the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers and was based on the construction of Z-scheme heterojunction. Additionally, the radical capture tests demonstrated the main reactive radicals were electron (e − ), hole (h + ), and hydroxy radical (•OH) in the photodegradation system. Furthermore, the composite retains excellent photocatalytic performance after five cycles and is easily recoverable due to its magnetic behavior. Notably, during the toxicity assessment, it was proved that SnFe 2 O 4 /Bi 2 WO 6 could be used to eliminate the toxicities of dyes and antibiotics rapidly. Consequently, SnFe 2 O 4 /Bi 2 WO 6 is a promising and competitive photocatalyst in wastewater remediation.

Graphical A novel 2D/1D/-2D RP/BP-MBWO composed of in situ junction and Z-scheme system has been successfully synthesized. Benefiting from this favourable interfacial and structural characteristics, the fabricated BP/RP-MBWO photocatalyst shows a sharply improved photocatalytic H 2 and H 2 O 2 evolution performance. Exploring multifunctional photocatalysts with rational design and construction of unique transport channels is of great significance for the value-added chemicals production and environmental remediation. In this work, a novel 2D/1D/-2D RP/BP-MBWO dual heterostructure photocatalyst has been successfully synthesized by loading the in-situ grown 2D/1D RP/BP heterostructure on the 2D Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets. through simple ultrasonic agitation.Benefiting from this favourable interfacial and structural characteristics, the fabricated BP/RP-MBWO photocatalyst shows a sharply improved photocatalytic H 2 and H 2 O 2 evolution performance. Excitingly, the optimal of H 2 O 2 production rate of the BP/RP-Bi 2 WO 6 composites is as high as 622.5 μmol g −1 h −1 under visible light irradiation, which is approximately 15 times as that of pure MBWO. The hydrogen production performance of the complexes was significantly improved compared to the pure MBWO samples. When the BP/RP loading was 20 %, the prepared nanocomposites showed the highest photocatalytic hydrogen evolution efficiency with the hydrogen production rate of about 0.77 μmol ⋅ g −1 ⋅ h −1 . This work is expected to offer a new inspiration for the rational design and construction of effcient photocatalyst systems toward solar energy capture and conversion.

Chlorpyrifos detection in strawberry and soil samples using a direct Z-scheme heterojunction photoelectrochemical sensor based on Bi2WO6 nanosheets loaded with MOFs-derived In2O3 hollow nanotubes

Kunxiang Deng,Yasen Wang,Yilin Wang,Zhifang Liu,Xinyi Li,Yixi Xie,Haoran Guo,Pengcheng Zhao,Junjie Fei

Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is widely utilized in agricultural practices, and its residue in food raise significant concerns food safety. However, current detection methods often suffer from complex operation procedures and unstable signal responses. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a reliable sensor for detecting CPF residue in food samples. In this work, a Z-scheme heterojunction was formed using hollow In 2 O 3 (H-In 2 O 3 ) and Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets. The staggered band structure of the H-In 2 O 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunction facilitates carrier separation and transfer, thereby enhancing the sensor's response. In the presence of CPF, it reacts with · OH radicals generated by the heterojunction, further amplifying the signal. The sensor exhibits a linear response in the range of 5–700 nM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.72 nM. In addition, this photoelectrochemical sensor demonstrates satisfactory stability, anti-interference, selectivity and reproducibility, showing great potential for CPF analysis in real samples.

Enriched surface oxygen vacancies of Bi2WO6/NH2-MIL-68(In) Z-scheme heterojunction with boosted visible-light photocatalytic degradation for levofloxacin: Performance, degradation pathway and mechanism insight

Qing Wang,Xingyue Qian,Hui Xu,Guangyu He,Haiqun Chen

Exploring effective approach to promote more comprehensive charge transfer and efficient spatial charge separation is considered to be a prospective strategy to reinforce photocatalytic degradation activity. Herein, the oxygen vacancy modified Bi 2 WO 6 /NH 2 -MIL-68(In) Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully fabricated via a facile solvothermal method. The chemical structure, morphology, and optical properties of the photocatalyst were characterized in detail. The optimized Bi 2 WO 6 /NH 2 -MIL-68(In) Z-scheme heterojunction displayed the maximum photocatalytic efficiency (84.3 %) for the degradation of levofloxacin (LEV), which was significantly higher than that of pure Bi 2 WO 6 (45.1 %), oxygen vacancy modified Bi 2 WO 6 (69.4 %), and NH 2 -MIL-68(In) (49.3 %). Importantly, the high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D EEMs) fluorescence spectra, the photo-electrochemical and photo-luminescence measurement, radical trapping test, and electron spin resonance (ESR) technique were carried out to illuminate the probable degradation pathway and mechanism of the LEV. The improved photocatalytic efficiency can be ascribed to the synergetic effect between oxygen vacancy and the Z-scheme heterojunction, which can serve as trapping centers to enhance the generation of photoexcited electrons and accelerate the charge transfer. Meanwhile, the effects of pH, photocatalyst dose, LEV concentration and different kinds of harmful organic pollutants were systematically explored from the practical application. This study offers a novel perspective for the integration of defect engineering and Z-scheme heterojunction in efficient organic pollutants degradation.

Active site regulated Z-scheme MIL-101(Fe)/Bi2WO6/Fe(III) with the synergy of hydrogen peroxide and visible-light-driven photo-Fenton degradation of organic contaminants

Rutong Song,Jun Yao,Mei Yang,Zhongbin Ye,Zhuang Xie,Xiang Zeng

Water pollution control is one of the major challenges currently faced. With the development of photocatalytic technology, an increasing number of new and efficient catalysts have been developed, but most of the catalysts have limited light capture ability and catalytic degradation efficiency. Therefore, in this work, hydrogen peroxide was further introduced to establish a photo-Fenton system to improve the photocatalytic effect by constructing a Z-scheme, and the degradation ability of the catalyst was maximized. Moreover, we successfully adhered bismuth tungstate nanosheets onto the surface of a MIL-101(Fe) framework and changed the number of active sites with iron ions of different doping amounts. We found that the number of active sites in the photo-Fenton system does not increase linearly, but increases and decreases regularly, which is similar to the change in band structure after doping. In addition, the results of the radical scavenger experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) revealed that both hydroxide radical (˙OH) and superoxide radical (˙O2−) participated in methylene blue (MB) degradation, of which ˙OH was the main active species for pollutant degradation. Based on high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) analysis, the possible degradation pathways were proposed. We believed that this work will provide insights into the heterojunction photo-Fenton system.

Improved ionic organic pollutant degradation under visible light by Ag SPR-promoted phosphorus-doped g-C3N4/AgBr/Bi2WO6 with excellent charge transfer capacity and high surface area

Xiuling Xue,Xiaoyi Chen,Zongyu Zhang,Guofeng Fan,Tingting Ma

Graphite carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) has a strong photocatalytic capability to degrade ionic organic compounds due to its unique electrical structure with numerous marginal amino groups. A photocatalyst was fabricated via a facile in-situ sedimentation–calcine–hydrothermal method by anchoring AgBr and Bi 2 WO 6 onto the framework of phosphorus-doped g-C 3 N 4 (PCAB). The photocatalyst has been proven to have good photocatalytic degradation effect on different ionic organic pollutants. The removal rate of tetracycline, the target pollutant, can reach 99.2%, which was 1.83 times higher than that of g-C 3 N 4 within 60 min under visible light. Moreover, the degradation rates of dyes containing azo bonds and -SO 3 H can reach 100% within 20 min, as determined by the electrical relationship between the catalyst and the dye. The excellent performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the formation of mid-gap in g-C 3 N 4 after phosphorus doping, improvements in charge carrier transfer and the low recombination rate based on the construction of dual Z-scheme heterojunction and Ag bridge. In addition, cycling experiments and characterizations illustrated the high stability and reusability of PCAB. The main active species during photocatalytic process was·O 2 − , whereas h + and·OH played a minimal role. Ultimately, a dual Z-scheme mechanism was proposed to explain the photocatalytic reaction.

2D Graphene oxide (GO) doped p-n type BiOI/Bi2WO6 as a novel composite for photodegradation of bisphenol A (BPA) in aqueous solutions under UV-vis irradiation

Zhu Mengting,Tonni Agustiono Kurniawan,You Yanping,Ram Avtar,Mohd Hafiz Dzarfan Othman

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a refractory pollutant presents in water body that possesses serious threats to living organisms. To deal with it, we investigate and evaluate the effectiveness of GO@BiOI/Bi 2 WO 6 composite as a novel photocatalyst for BPA removal from aqueous solutions under UV–vis irradiation. To enhance its removal for BPA, the surface of BiOI/Bi 2 WO 6 is modified with graphene oxide (GO). This composite is named as ‘GO@BiOI/Bi 2 WO 6 ’. Changes in its physico-chemical properties after surface modification with GO are characterized by XRD, FTIR, FESEM-EDS, XPS, PL, and BET methods. Optimized conditions of BPA degradation by the composite are determined under identical conditions. Photodegradation pathways of BPA and its removal mechanisms by the same composite are presented. It is obvious that the GO@BiOI/Bi 2 WO 6 has demonstrated its potential as a promising photocatalyst for BPA removal under UV–vis irradiation. About 81% of BPA removal is attained by the GO@BiOI/Bi 2 WO 6 under optimized conditions (10 mg/L of BPA, 0.5 g/L of dose, pH 7 and 5 h of reaction time). The oxidation by-products of BPA degradation include p -hydroquinone or 4-(1-hydroxy-1-methyl-ethyl)-phenol. In spite of its performance, the treated effluents are still unable to meet the maximum discharge limit of <1 mg/L set by national legislation. Therefore, subsequent biological processes are essential to maximize its biodegradation in the wastewater samples before their discharge into waterbody.

The facile fabrication of novel visible-light-driven Z-scheme CuInS2/Bi2WO6 heterojunction with intimate interface contact by in situ hydrothermal growth strategy for extraordinary photocatalytic performance

Xiaoying Lu,Wenjie Che,Xiufeng Hu,Yi Wang,Aiting Zhang,Fang Deng,Shenglian Luo,Dionysios D. Dionysiou

The pollution of pharmaceutical wastewater has attracted global attention. Photocatalysis is an attractive yet challenging method for the degradation of pharmaceutical residues. Fabricating efficient Z-scheme heterojunctions with intimate interface contact for enhancing the performance of photocatalysts is a challenge. Herein, novel visible-light-driven direct Z-scheme CuInS 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunctions with intimate interface contact were successfully synthesized by in situ hydrothermal growth of Bi 2 WO 6 directly on the surface of CuInS 2 network-like microspheres, and the content of CuInS 2 was optimized. The photocatalytic activity of optimal Z-scheme 15% CuInS 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC•HCl) is more than three times that of bare CuInS 2 and 17% higher than that of Bi 2 WO 6 , which is attributed that the intimate interface contact can assure excellent interfacial charge transfer abilities. Moreover, Z-scheme CuInS 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunctions are highly stable with no inactivation in photocatalytic cycles. More importantly, real pharmaceutical industry wastewater can be efficiently disposed by Fenton-aided photocatalysis of Z-scheme CuInS 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunctions with COD removal efficiency being 90.5%, which is much higher than the reported results, and thus sets a new performance benchmark for practical application in real pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.
