One-step grinding significantly enhances the visible-light photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics in water by TiO2-BiOBr: A comparative study

Wenjie Guo,Jiaping Cai,Yisha Zheng,Wenlong Xiang,Juan Xu,Yanhui Zhang

Titanium dioxide - bismuth oxybromide (TiO 2 -BiOBr) composites were successfully prepared using simple one-step grinding, which not only simplifies the production process but also establishes a solid foundation for mass production. Notably, the morphology of BiOBr synthesized by solvothermal significantly affects the performance of the materials after compounding; however, further investigations revealed that the interfacial effects in these composites were not markedly superior to those prepared using the solid-phase grinding method. The composites fabricated through the grinding technique exhibited substantially enhanced photocatalytic activity compared to those produced by conventional solvothermal. This enhancement can be primarily attributed to the interfacial interactions that promote synergistic catalytic effects between TiO 2 and BiOBr. Moreover, the grinding process roughens the material surface and significantly increases its specific surface area, thereby enhancing light scattering and absorption, and optimizing light utilization. Under visible light conditions, the 5 % TiO 2 -BiOBr composites demonstrates outstanding photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation, achieving 92 % degradation efficiency for ciprofloxacin (CIP) while maintaining excellent stability across various antibiotics. Furthermore, this material exhibits remarkable CH 4 selectivity in CO 2 photoreduction. Collectively, these findings indicate that the low-cost and high-performance composites synthesized via grinding offer a practical solution for antibiotic wastewater treatment. The novelty of this study lies in the proposal of a low-cost and efficient synthesis method. It points to a new direction for the preparation of photocatalytic materials. This representing a significant advancement in environmental pollution control.

Construction of Z-scheme heterojunction by coupling Bi2Sn2O7 and BiOBr with abundant oxygen vacancies: Enhanced photodegradation performance and mechanism insight

Di Zhang,Maoquan Wu,Juanyuan Hao,Shengliang Zheng,Yang Yang,Tongjie Yao,You Wang

Promoting charge migration and enhancing redox ability of photogenerated carriers are important for the development of highly efficient semiconductor-based photocatalyst. Here, BiOBr/Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 heterojunction with oxygen vacancies (OVs) was constructed by homogeneously depositing Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 nanoparticles on the Vo-BiOBr surface. The experimental results manifested that Vo-BiOBr/Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 displayed better performance for rhodamine B, ciprofloxacin, and tetracycline degradation than counterparts without OVs . The characterization results proved OVs played the essential role for enhanced performance via improving the separation efficiency of charge carriers, increasing the visible light harvest, and lowering conduction band position. Moreover, mechanism study revealed that an inner electric field was built at the interface, leading to a Z-scheme path of photogenerated electron. This study provided an efficient strategy for designing highly efficient photocatalyst for solving environmental pollution.

Promoting tetracycline degradation via synergistic effects of BiOBr/TiO2/NH2-UiO-66 ternary Z-scheme heterojunctions under visible light irradiation

Dong Mingming,Yang Shuyong,Wang Anshun,Zhou Peng,Huang Zewen,Tu Shenghui

A ternary Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst, BiOBr/TiO 2 /NH 2 -UiO-66(Zr), was constructed to enhance the visible-light-driven degradation of tetracycline (TC). This composite material was synthesized via hydrothermal and in situ growth methods, and its microstructure and properties were analyzed through a series of systematic characterizations. The introduction of NH 2 -UiO-66 significantly increased the specific surface area and visible light absorption while promoting the separation and transport of photogenerated charge carriers. Under visible light irradiation, the optimal composite (BTU-2) achieved a TC degradation rate of 96.3% within 80 min, with a reaction rate constant 9.41, 12.03, and 8.58 times higher than those of pure BiOBr, TiO 2 nanowires (NWs), and NH 2 -UiO-66, respectively. Trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis confirmed that h + and ‧O 2 − were the dominant active species. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) further elucidated the possible TC degradation pathways. This work provides a feasible strategy for designing efficient visible-light-responsive photocatalysts for antibiotic wastewater treatment. Graphical abstract

Fabrication of Bi2O3 QDs decorated TiO2/BiOBr dual Z-scheme photocatalysts for efficient degradation of gaseous toluene under visible-light

Hao Xu,Jian Yang,Yang Li,Fan Fu,Kang Da,Shaobo Cao,Wenting Chen,Ximei Fan

Weak visible-light capture ability, ultrahigh charge recombination rate, and poor redox ability are crucial constraints to improve the photocatalytic performance for toluene degradation under visible-light. Hence, a dual Z-scheme of Bi 2 O 3 quantum dots decorated TiO 2 /BiOBr photocatalysts (Bi 2 O 3 QDs@TiO 2 /BiOBr) were prepared by a two-step hydrothermal method . X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were performed to identify the existence of Bi 2 O 3 QDs and TiO 2 that loaded on the surface of BiOBr. The introducing of oxygen vacancies in TiO 2 broadened its light absorption region to the visible-light. The constitutes of Bi 2 O 3 QDs and BiOBr were regulated and the optimized photocatalyst BT1-B10 exhibited 94.1 % of removal rate for gaseous toluene degradation after 150 min irradiation of visible-light (>420 nm) as well as good recoverability and durability. This result was obviously superior to other comparison samples. In-situ DRIFTs spectra and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) were carried out to provide a possible pathway for the toluene degradation. Additionally, a dual-channel electron transfer model based on the Z-scheme was proposed, which presented desirable visible-light response region, efficient charge separation efficiency, and enhanced redox ability. Notably, hydroxyl radicals (•OH) served as the dominant active species was confirmed by electron spin resonance (ESR) and gas-phase capture tests, that was beneficial to the ring-opening of toluene degradation. This dual Z-scheme heterojunction of Bi 2 O 3 QDs@TiO 2 /BiOBr photocatalyst showed great potential for the degradation of toluene under visible-light irradiation.

Oxygen Vacancies-Rich S-Cheme BiOBr/CdS Heterojunction with Synergetic Effect for Highly Efficient Light Emitting Diode-Driven Pollutants Degradation

Yang Yu,Fengjuan Chen,Xuekun Jin,Junyong Min,Haiming Duan,Jin Li,Zhaofeng Wu,Biaobing Cao

Recently, the use of semiconductor-based photocatalytic technology as an effective way to mitigate the environmental crisis attracted considerable interest. Here, the S-scheme BiOBr/CdS heterojunction with abundant oxygen vacancies (Vo-BiOBr/CdS) was prepared by the solvothermal method using ethylene glycol as a solvent. The photocatalytic activity of the heterojunction was investigated by degrading rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB) under 5 W light-emitting diode (LED) light. Notably, the degradation rate of RhB and MB reached 97% and 93% in 60 min, respectively, which were better than that of BiOBr, CdS, and BiOBr/CdS. It was due to the construction of the heterojunction and the introduction of Vo, which facilitated the spatial separation of carriers and enhanced the visible-light harvest. The radical trapping experiment suggested that superoxide radicals (·O2−) acted as the main active species. Based on valence balance spectra, Mott-Schottky(M-S) spectra, and DFT theoretical calculations, the photocatalytic mechanism of the S-scheme heterojunction was proposed. This research provides a novel strategy for designing efficient photocatalysts by constructing S-scheme heterojunctions and introducing oxygen vacancies for solving environmental pollution. Keywords:BiOBr;CdS;oxygen vacancy;S-scheme;photocatalysis

Insight into tetracycline photocatalytic degradation mechanism in a wide pH range on BiOI/BiOBr: Coupling DFT/QSAR simulations with experiments

Qianqian Ni,Xin Ke,Wenjing Qian,Zheng Yan,Jingde Luan,Wengang Liu

A single hydrothermal reaction was used to create BiOI/BiOBr composites, which demonstrated good sunlight-driven photocatalytic degradation activity of tetracycline (TC) over a broad pH range and the degradation efficiency can be stable at about 90%. Moreover,·O 2 - has been identified as the most important active ingredient in the photocatalytic system. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to investigate the electron transfer mechanism of BiOX heterojunctions on a molecular scale, as well as to propose possible photocatalytic degradation mechanisms and reaction sites for tetracycline in different deprotonated forms at a wide range of pH values. The quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) was also used to assess the toxicity of the intermediates. In summary, this study presents new concepts for investigating the photodegradation behavior of antibiotics throughout a wide pH range, which is predicted to be employed for surface water remediation.

In-situ synthesis of 3D BiOBr/UiO-66-NH2 heterojunction nanocomposite and its excellent photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B dye

Feng Shuna,Yan Zheng,Ni Qianqian,Zhang Yun

As a primary goal, The fast recombination of stimulated excitons and poor visible light response are key problems in the photocatalysis field. Combining with materials with good visible light responses to form heterogeneous structures is still the most effective way. In this study, BiOBr/UiO-66-NH2 photocatalyst was synthesized by a simple method. BiOBr is a 3D spherical structure stacked by nanosheets, which enhance its adsorption capacity for pollutants and catalyze the dark reaction to reach the equilibrium point for too long. Coupling with UiO-66-NH2, its adsorption capacity was inhibited and the dark reaction time was shortened. The excellent removal rate of Rhodamine B (RhB) by BiOBr/UiO-66-NH2 reached 96.79% after 30 min of visible light irradiation and 99.37% after 90 min. With an increase in pollutant concentration, the composite still showed excellent photocatalytic performance. This study also tried to abandon the dark adsorption stage and directly degraded RhB efficiently and quickly under visible light. Finally, the photocatalytic enhancement mechanism was proposed.

Sn2+ reduction to synthesis of the Mo doped hollow hierarchical Bi/BiOBr microspheres for efficient ciprofloxacin degradation under visible light

Peijie Weng,Qing Cai,Linfeng Zhang,Huadong Wu,Kun Wu,Jia Guo

In this study, the Mo -doped hollow hierarchical Bi/BiOBr microspheres are prepared by the solvothermal method with the Sn 2+ as reductant. The prepared composites show a good degradation effect for ciprofloxacin (CIP) under visible light. Especially, the BSM-22 composite show the best photocatalytic activity, with the apparent rate constant k as high as 0.03014 min −1 , which is 26.9 times that of the pure BiOBr. It is assumed that the introduction of Sn 2+ facilitate the formation of hollow hierarchical microspheres structure of BiOBr microspheres and the appearance of metallic Bi on the surfaces. Therefore, the transfer and separation efficiency of photogenerated charges is increased in the composites. Impressive, benefit from the microtopography of the hollow structure, the specific surface area of the BSM-22 (53.476 m 2 /g) is 21.76 times than that of the BiOBr (2.458 m 2 /g). The doping of Mo reduces the band gap of BiOBr (exactly from 2.61 to 1.96 eV) and broaden the photoabsorption region. Therefore, the photocatalytic activity of the Mo -doped Bi/BiOBr microspheres are heavily improved in dealing with different kinds of antibiotic molecules. More importantly, these results show that the design strategies of heteroatom doping, metal bismuth production, and morphology control of the bismuth oxybromide composite can greatly improve the visible-light catalytic activity.

Preparation and characterization of a self-dispersed and reactive TiO2/BiOBr photocatalyst for self-cleaning and ultraviolet resistant cotton fabrics

Kuang Wang,Jialong Tian,Wenhui Yu,Ling Lin,Zhenming Qi,Chunxia Wang

A novel and efficient approach is presented herein to develop self-cleaning and ultraviolet resistant cotton fabrics loaded with a self-dispersed and reactive TiO2/BiOBr photocatalyst. TiO2/BiOBr was synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS) and photocatalytic activity. Amino-functionalized TiO2/BiOBr was prepared through the reaction of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane with TiO2/BiOBr and then reacted with sodium 2-(4-(4,6-dichloro-1,3,5-triazine-2-ylamino)phenylsulfonyl)ethyl sulfate (SDTES) to obtain self-dispersed and reactive TiO2/BiOBr. The chemical structure and dispersity of TiO2/BiOBr, amino-functionalized TiO2/BiOBr and self-dispersed and reactive TiO2/BiOBr were revealed utilizing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and a zeta potential test. Cotton fabric was loaded with self-dispersed and reactive TiO2/BiOBr by the dip dyeing method. XRD and SEM were employed to characterize the crystalline structure and surface morphology of cotton fabrics, respectively. In addition, the anti-ultraviolet, self-cleaning and wash fastness properties of cotton fabrics were studied. The photocatalytic test demonstrated that TiO2/BiOBr has superior photocatalytic activity than TiO2 or BiOBr under simulated sunlight irradiation. In addition, the experimental results showed that self-dispersed and reactive TiO2/BiOBr had commendable dispersity and storage stability. The cotton fabric loaded with self-dispersed and reactive TiO2/BiOBr had exceptional anti-ultraviolet, self-cleaning and washing properties. The photocatalytic mechanism of self-dispersed and reactive TiO2/BiOBr and its binding reactions with cotton fabric were proposed, which may provide a reference for broad application potential in functional textiles.

Zhihong Li,Danquan Lan,Zuji Li,Jiangli Sun,Shuo Chen,Jinhang Yang,Jingwen Wei,Zebing Yu,Shuangfei Wang,Yanping Hou

Development of efficient photocatalysts for efficient recalcitrant organic pollutants degradation is of great significance. Herein, the step-doped disulfide vacancies S-scheme Cu 3 SnS 4 /L-BiOBr (CTS/L-BiOBr) heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared for ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, ultraviolet photo-electron spectroscopy (UPS) analysis, band structure and dominant radicals’ identification together verified that the transfer of photogenerated carriers conformed to the S-scheme mechanism. Benefited from the interfacial electric field (IEF) of the S-scheme heterojunction and incorporation of L-cysteine with introducing S-vacancies and surface functional groups (-NH 2 , -COO - ), photogenerated charges generation and separation of the CTS/L-BiOBr (10) were greatly improved. With ·OH and h + as dominant reactive species, CIP removal reached 93% using CTS/L-BiOBr (10) within 180 min of visible light irradiation, which was 3.5 times and 2.6 times of pristine Cu 3 SnS 4 and L-BiOBr, respectively. Moreover, possible CIP degradation pathways were proposed and the degradation intermediates ecotoxicity were evaluated. This study could provide reference for designing efficient S-scheme photocatalysts for recalcitrant wastewater treatment .

Decoration engineering induced MoS2QDs/BiOBr heterostructures for significantly enhancing visible light photocatalytic capability for the organic dyes and antibiotics removal

Mingliang Zhang,Fangfang Duo,Jihong Lan,Lixiang Li,Jianwei Zhou,Liangliang Chu,Chubei Wang

A novel MoS 2 quantum dots decorated BiOBr heterostructure photocatalyst has been successfully fabricated by a facile hydrolysis approach. The MoS 2 QDs are prepared through an ultrasound-exfoliation method by MoS 2 nanosheet. The structure, morphology, elemental composition and optical absorption properties of materials have been detailedly investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), FT-IR spectrum, Raman spectrum, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and photoluminescence spectra (PL), respectively. It can be observed that MoS 2 QDs with a diameter of about 5 nm are uniformly and firmly dispersed on the surface of the BiOBr. The MoS 2 QDs/BiOBr heterostructures show excellent photocatalytic activity both towards rhodamine B dyes and ciprofloxacin under visible light irradiation. It can be attributed to the synergistic effect of MoS 2 QDs/BiOBr heterostructures between MoS 2 QDs and BiOBr, which can promote the separation of photo-induced carriers and absorption of visible light. A heterojunction model based on the charges transfer mechanism has been proposed. Furthermore, the scavenger experiments and repeated experiments are conducted. The superior photocatalytic activity and excellent stability of MoS 2 QDs/BiOBr heterostructures can be a promising choice for practical application of water purification.

BiOBr/ Bi4O5Br2/PDI constructed for visible-light degradation of endocrine disrupting chemicals: Synergistic effects of bi-heterojunction and oxygen evolution

Haoyi Wang,Ye Zhou,Jinnan Wang,Aimin Li,Philippe François-Xavier Corvini

To remove endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), visible-light response photocatalyst BiOBr/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 /perylene diimide (PDI) with bi-heterojunction was constructed. Under visible-light irradiation, BiOBr/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 /PDI could degrade 90% Bisphenol A (BPA) within 75 min, while degrade 100% 17α-ethynyl estradiol (EE2) and 17β-estradiol (E2) within 15 min. Radicals quenching experiment and EPR indicated both •O 2 – and holes were the main substances for EDCs degradation, and the possible degradation pathway of EDCs are proposed based on the LC-MS analysis results. In the composite of BiOBr/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 /PDI, the matching energy band structure between Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 and BiOBr facilitated the formation of heterojunction for strengthening the space charge separation. Meanwhile, PDI with strong photosensitivity combined with BiOBr/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 not only enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity but also broadened the light-harvesting range. Owning to the unique one-dimensional conjugated structure and internal electric field effect, PDI could also promote the photo-carriers transfer and separation. With the bi-heterojunction effect, photo-generated electrons were transferred to BiOBr conduction band while holes were accumulated on PDI valence band. Simultaneously, holes could oxidize water with the production of oxygen following being reduced to •O 2 – by photo-generated electrons. Even under oxygen-poor conditions, the production of •O 2 – can reach 32.7 × 10 -5 mol•g −1 •h −1 , resulting in more than 85% BPA degradation within 75 min.
