Enhancing the performance of pollution degradation through secondary self-assembled composite supramolecular heterojunction photocatalyst BiOCl/PDI under visible light irradiation

Qiuyi Ji,Zhe Xu,Weiming Xiang,Yijie Wu,Xinying Cheng,Chenmin Xu,Chengdu Qi,Huan He,Jiapeng Hu,Shaogui Yang,Shiyin Li,Limin Zhang

A novel n-n type inorganic/organic heterojunction of flaky-like BiOCl/PDI photocatalyst was constructed by water bath heating method. Meanwhile, a simple method - secondary self-assembly was used to prepare the BiOCl/PDI with a special band structure. The photocatalytic activities were evaluated by degrading aqueous organic pollutants under visible light (λ > 420 nm). The removal rates of 5 mg L −1 phenol (non-ionic type), methyl orange (MO, anionic type), rhodamine B (RhB, cationic type) and 10 mg L −1 RhB by secondary self-assembly BiOCl/PDI (BiOCl/PDI-2) were 8.0%, 3.4%, 27.8% and 78.9% higher than self-assembly BiOCl/PDI (BiOCl/PDI-1) under visible light (λ > 420 nm). The better photocatalytic activity for BiOCl/PDI-2 was attributed to the optimization of energy-band structures, which arose from different exposed surfaces, narrower interplanar spacing and stronger visible light absorption performance. Under acidic condition, BiOCl/PDI-2 showed a good photocatalytic activity, which was not affected by neutral ionic intensity and had good recycling properties. Moreover, the photocatalytic mechanism was explored by free radical capture test and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and contribution of active species was calculated. The main active species of BiOCl/PDI-2 were ·O 2 − , 1 O 2 and h + . Our work may provide a route to design efficient inorganic/organic heterojunctions for organic pollutants degradation .

BiOCl-Bi12O17Cl2 nanocomposite with high visible-light photocatalytic activity prepared by an ultrasonic hydrothermal method for removing dye and pharmaceutical

Zeqing Long,Guang Xian,Guangming Zhang,Tao Zhang,Xuemei Li

A BiOCl-Bi 12 O 17 Cl 2 nanocomposite with a high visible-light response and a low photoinduced electron-hole pair recombination rate was successfully synthesized using an ultrasonic-hydrothermal method. The texture, structure, optical, and photocatalytic properties of the composite were characterized. The results showed that the composite had a sheet flower-like structure with a large specific surface area. Ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflection spectra and photoluminescence spectra showed that the composite had an excellent visible-light response and a low recombination rate of photoinduced electron hole pairs. The photocatalytic property of the composite was evaluated by the removal efficiency of rhodamine B and ciprofloxacin under visible-light illumination. The composite's reaction rate constant of removing rhodamine B (/ciprofloxacin) was approximately 8.14 (/4.94), 42.63 (/11.91) and 64.66 (/36.07) times that of Bi 12 O 17 Cl 2 , P25, and BiOCl, respectively. Furthermore, the composite showed a wide applicable pH range and excellent reusability. Mechanism analysis showed that photogenerated holes played a dominant role and ·O 2 − also contributed to photocatalytic degradation. In summary, this study presents a high-efficiency photocatalyst for wastewater treatment .

A novel Er3+/Yb3+ doped chiral inorganic nanostructured BiOCl/Zn composite material for enhanced upconversion luminescence and its temperature sensing properties

Kaicheng Yao,Haoqiang Zhang,Rongze Ma,Yanni Lang,Dan Wu,Liang Xu,Aning Ma,Yongjin Li,Dacheng Zhou,Zhiguo Song,Yugeng Wen,Yong Yang,Jin Han,Jianbei Qiu

Upconversion luminescence (UCL) of chiral inorganic nanostructured composite material and their applications have been challenging. This paper reports a successful preparation of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped chiral inorganic nanostructured BiOCl/Zn composite material (D-BYE-Zn) using a hydrothermal method and subsequent air annealing. The D-BYE-Zn phosphor significantly increased the intensity of UCL compared with the Er 3+ , Yb 3+ co-doped achiral bismuth oxychloride phosphor (A-BYE) and chiral bismuth oxychloride phosphor (D-BYE). Our study suggests that free electron leaps from the Zn fraction onto BiOCl may be responsible for the enhanced UCL. In addition, the temperature sensitive behavior of the D-BYE-Zn phosphor has been evaluated using the thermally coupled levels (TCLs) and non-thermally coupled levels (NTCLs) of Er 3+ and the maximum relative sensitivities (S R ) obtained are 0.95 % K −1 and 1.65 %K −1 (323 K). Our work provides a new strategy for constructing rare-earth doped chiral inorganic nanostructured composite materials to realize UCL enhancement while promising a wide range of applications in light source temperature measurement.

Defect-engineered TiO2/BiOCl core-shell S-scheme heterojunction: Boosting photocatalytic degradation via optimizing charge dynamics and enhancing light absorption capacity

Jinxia Liang,Hongxia Chen,Kunfeng Zhang,Boyi He,Bo Peng,Baozhong Zhang,Hanyu Chen,Jingli Xu,Guofu Sun,Hongxing Dai

Herein, Ti-deficient TiO 2 was combined with oxygen-deficient BiOCl to construct a core-shell structured TiO 2 /BiOCl S-scheme heterojunction. The defect-engineered TiO 2 and BiOCl exhibited significantly enhanced tetracycline (TC) removal efficiency, which were 4.4 and 2.5 times higher than those over the defect-free TiO 2 (TiO 2 -R) and BiOCl (BiOCl-R) samples, respectively. The optimized TiO 2 /BiOCl-2 photocatalyst demonstrated the highest degradation efficiency, outperforming single BiOCl and TiO 2 by 3.2 and 2.9 times, respectively. In-depth explorations showed that the enhanced photocatalytic activity originated from the establishment of an interfacial electric field at the core/shell interface, the enhanced light utilization efficiency, and the established S-scheme charge transfer pathway. More importantly, TiO 2 /BiOCl-2 also manifested superior photocatalytic degradation efficiency when subjected to complex reaction environments. By taking into account the contributions of involved reactive species and produced intermediates, both the reaction mechanism and toxicity assessment were thoroughly explored. The present work showcases an effective strategy to improve photocatalytic efficiency by virtue of the synergy between core-shell heterojunction and defect engineering.

Construction of a flower-like CeO₂/sheet-like BiOCl Z-scheme heterojunction for enhanced visible-light photocatalytic degradation and antibacterial activity

Linlin Wang,Bingjie Liu,Jikun Li,Jinglei De,Meng Liu,Yangchuan Ke

A flower-like CeO₂/BiOCl Z-scheme heterojunction was constructed for efficient charge separation. • The catalyst degraded 99.6% RhB (600 mg/L), 93.3% CR (100 mg/L), and 90.3% TC (10 mg/L) under visible-light irradiation. • The photocatalyst achieved 98.9% antibacterial efficiency against E. coli . • DFT, ESR, and trapping experiments confirmed the Z-scheme charge-transfer mechanism. The construction of Z-scheme heterojunctions is an effective strategy for enhancing photocatalytic performance by promoting charge separation while maintaining a robust redox capacity. In this study, we present a flower-like CeO₂/flake-like BiOCl heterojunction (designated as 2-BC) synthesized using a simple method. 2-BC demonstrated remarkable efficacy in degrading high concentrations of Rhodamine B (RhB, 600 mg/L, 99.6%) and efficiently removed Congo Red (CR, 100 mg/L, 93.3%) and Tetracycline (TC, 10 mg/L, 90.3%). Additionally, it exhibited exceptional antibacterial activity, with a kill rate of 98.9% against Escherichia coli ( E. coli) under illumination, and notable stability, retaining 83.5% of its initial activity after five cycles. The superior performance of 2-BC was attributed to a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism, which was supported by density functional theory calculations and radical trapping experiments. This mechanism ensures efficient charge carrier separation while preserving strong redox potentials in both semiconductors, thereby enhancing the generation of active species (•O₂⁻, h⁺, and •OH). Our findings suggest that 2-BC is a stable and highly efficient Z-scheme photocatalyst with significant potential for the treatment of organic and biological pollutants in aquatic environments. Ultrarapid degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) by 2D ultrathin Bi/BiOCl@g-C3N4 nanosheets: Facet engineering and Bi surface plasmon resonance

Angzhan Li,Dayong Tian,Yao Guo,Xingling Zhang,Shaopeng Zhang,Liu Cheng,Li Wang,Yifeng Zhang,Ning Fu

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is currently regarded as a refractory pollutant. The development efficient degradation technologies remains a critical challenge owing to the strong stability of C-F bond. However, current photocatalytic approaches for PFOA degradation suffer from slow reaction kinetics. Herein, a series of ultrathin BiOCl@g-C 3 N 4 (BiCN) was prepared using a hydrothermal method, and their PFOA degradation performance was evaluated. The most effective photocatalyst (BiCN-2) achieved a 92.3% PFOA removal rate within 30 min (rate constant k  = 0.1059 min −1 ), with a corresponding defluorination efficiency of 24.8%. Specifically, the exposed (101) facets of BiOCl accelerate electron movement, whereas the BiOCl@g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction interface enhances the separation of photogenerated charges. Additionally, the metallic Bi nanoparticles acted as both electron bridges and sources of hot electrons via the surface plasmon resonance effect, further boosting the reaction. Superoxide radicals, photogenerated electrons, and photogenerated holes were identified as the main reactive species in the degradation reaction. Density functional theory was employed to determine the interaction mechanism between PFOA and the photocatalyst. This study provides insights into an efficient alternative for the photocatalytic degradation of PFOA.

Regulating interface charge separation to unlock photocatalytic non-radical pathways: Construction of BiOCl/COF S-scheme heterojunction for efficient antibiotic remediation

Hailan Qin,Siyuan Di,Min Liu,Qiuyue Zhang,Pin Chen,Zihan Li,Shukui Zhu

BOC/COF S-scheme heterojunction significantly boosted charge separation efficiency. • The non-radical pathway predominated, facilitating efficient photocatalytic degradation. • Elevated 1 O 2 quantum yield was achieved via optimized charge transfer. • The reduction in toxicity was confirmed via the plant models and DFT calculations. • The non-radical-dominated and radical-assisted synergy achieved efficient TC degradation. The inefficiency of charge separation and the unselective nature of radical-based pathways severely limit the practical application of photocatalysis for water purification. Herein, a BiOCl/COF (BOC/COF) S-scheme heterojunction was successfully constructed via ultrasonic assistance. Remarkably, the optimized S-scheme heterojunction significantly enhanced photo-generated carrier separation efficiency, which effectively promoted ROS generation and improved the removal rate of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) (degradation rate: 91.6%). The research has found that non-radical pathways collectively accounted for 89.11% of the degradation activity, endowing the system with high selectivity. It is worth noting that the BC-20 membrane can efficiently eliminate TC in a continuous-flow wastewater treatment system. Furthermore, BC-20 can degrade TC in an enlarged reactor under natural sunlight irradiation. The three possible degradation pathways were analyzed through Fukui function and LC-MS. The toxicity of the TC solution after being treated with the BOC/COF S-scheme was evaluated using mung beans as a crop model. Through (in-situ) characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the S-scheme charge transfer mechanism and interfacial electric field (IEF) driving efficient 1 O 2 production were systematically elucidated. These findings not only deciphered the interface engineering-mediated non-radical generation mechanism in BOC/COF S-scheme photocatalysis but also advanced its practical application in aquatic environmental remediation. Carbon Dots-Mediated Z-Scheme Heterojunction of UiO-66-NH2/BiOCl for Enhanced Visible-Light-Driven Degradation of Antibiotics and Dyes

Xinhua He,Zijie Xia,Linlin Wang,Tianchen Shen,Wenqi Tan,Jianmin Shen,Linying Yuan,Zheng Jiao

The ubiquitous accumulation of antibiotics and synthetic dyes in aquatic environments has emerged as a critical threat to the ecological integrity and human health. Visible-light-driven photocatalysis represents a sustainable strategy for decontaminating such pollutants; yet, its practical efficacy is often hampered by narrow light-harvesting ranges and rapid photogenerated carrier recombination. Herein, a ternary photocatalyst, namely, CDs/UiO-66-NH2/BiOCl (CUCl), was rationally constructed by integrating carbon dots (CDs) into a UiO-66-NH2/BiOCl Z-scheme heterojunction. Serving as an efficient electron reservoir, the introduced CDs not only significantly extended the visible-light absorption range but also effectively suppressed carrier recombination. Under visible-light irradiation, the optimized CUCl catalyst achieved remarkable degradation efficiencies of 87.2% and 98.8% for tetracycline and rhodamine B, respectively, outperforming the binary UiO-66-NH2/BiOCl heterojunction and pristine BiOCl. Radical trapping experiments and photocatalytic mechanism investigations revealed that photogenerated holes (h+) and superoxide radicals (·O2–) were the dominant active species responsible for pollutant degradation. Moreover, the CUCl catalyst exhibited excellent structural stability and reusability, retaining more than 85% of its initial catalytic activity after four consecutive reuse cycles. This work provides a novel and viable strategy for fabricating high-efficiency, stable environmental photocatalysts via the synergistic integration of Z-scheme heterojunctions and carbon dot functionalization.

3D flower-like Cu-BiOCl/Bi2S3 heterostructure with synergistic Cu ion doping: A study on efficient tetracycline degradation under visible light

Yanjie Han,Zhijia Zhu,Chunyan Hu,Jian Zheng,Baojiang Liu,Wei Wang

In this study, a novel three-dimensional, flower-like Cu-BiOCl/Bi 2 S 3 photocatalyst was synthesized using a two-step calcination and hydrothermal method , aiming at the efficient removal of tetracycline (TC). Through comprehensive characterization techniques, it was discerned that the incorporation of Cu ions extended the light absorption range of BiOCl. Additionally, the formation of a heterojunction significantly enhanced the separation efficiency of space charge. The unique three-dimensional flower-like architecture of the Cu-BiOCl/Bi 2 S 3 photocatalyst augments its surface area exposure and consequently, the density of active sites. This catalyst exhibited a remarkable degradation rate of approximately 95% for TC under visible light irradiation. This performance exhibits a notable enhancement over the degradation rates of BiOCl and Bi 2 S 3 , which are approximately 39% and 53% respectively, surpassing them by factors of 2.39 and 1.78. Electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis coupled with free radical trapping experiments pinpointed superoxide radicals (•O 2 - ) and photogenerated holes (h + ) as the pivotal active species orchestrating the photocatalytic degradation. Concludingly, a possible TC degradation pathway was proposed based on the intermediates generated during the photocatalytic reaction as detected by Liquid Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS) and Three-Dimension Excitation Emission Matrix (3D EEM).

High performance visible light response 0D/2D MoS2QDs/BiOCl photocatalyst with synergetic effects of up-conversion and direct Z-scheme heterojunction

Fangfang Duo,Mingliang Zhang,Xiaoting Feng,Chubei Wang,Liangliang Chu,Xi Chen,Jianwei Zhou

Constructing Z-scheme heterojunction has been regarded as a fascinating method to enhance the charge carrier separation rate and retain the high photoredox ability. In this paper, a novel 0D/2D MoS 2 QDs/BiOCl Z-scheme heterojunction with outstanding visible-light photocatalytic performance has been successfully prepared by a facile one-step strategy. The MoS 2 QDs with a diameter of 5 nm were uniformly distributed on the surface of BiOCl nanosheets . The optimized MoS 2 QDs/BiOCl heterojunction showed the most robust CIP and RhB degradation efficiency, which was approximately 32.2 and 44.7 times higher than that of pure BiOCl under visible light irradiation, respectively. This result can be attributed to the synergetic effects of up-conversion and direct Z-scheme heterojunction of the MoS 2 QDs. The optical property , morphology and surface feature of the catalyst were analyzed through the UV–vis DRS, PL , XRD , Raman, FT-IR, XPS, SEM and TEM. The study of ESR characterization and free radical capture experiments confirmed the Z-scheme heterojunction electron transfer route. Finally, a rational photocatalytic mechanism for pollutants degradation over the MoS 2 QDs/BiOCl heterojunctions were proposed. This study may provide a reliable strategy for the construction of Z-scheme bismuth-based heterojunction and its potential application in photocatalytic organic pollutants degradation.

In situ synthesis of donut-like Fe-doped-BiOCl@Fe-MOF composites using for excellent performance photodegradation of dyes and tetracycline

Yunxin Shi,Liying Wang,Xin Miao,Zhenzhu Cao,Yongfeng Zhang,Lin Cheng,Jucai Yang

A series of donut-like nanostructured heterojunction materials are first synthesized via one-step solvothermal method to improve the photocatalytic efficiency for the environmental pollutants. The unique donut-like Fe-doped-BiOCl@Fe-MOF heterojunction with uniform size guarantees suitable surface area and many active sites for the model pollutant. The optimal photocatalytic efficiency is shown in degradation of RhB (99.0 %, 90 min) and TC (90.4 %, 90 min) solution, which had higher photocatalytic efficiency than a variety of similar materials previously reported. The result revealed that the enhancing photocatalytic activity is mainly depended on the synergistic effect of Fe-MOF and Fe-doped BiOCl. The possible mechanism is further studied, which shown h + and O 2 − are the primary active species in the degradation process of RhB and TC solution. Meantime, Fe-doped BiOCl@Fe-MOF with the excellent reusability and stability. After the fourth cycle, the degradation rate of RhB solution can still be as high as 86.4 %. In this work, we provide a higher efficiency heterojunction photocatalytic material by varying the organic ligand content.

Significantly activated persulfate by novel carbon quantum dots-modified N-BiOCl for complete degradation of bisphenol-A under visible light irradiation

Jianqiao Zhang,Zhiyang Li,Qian Lei,Dan Zhong,YiXin Ke,WenJie Liu,Lei Yang

The practical application of bismuth-based photocatalysts in the field of micropollutant photodegradation is limited due to their weak light absorption and rapid charge recombination. Herein, we have developed a novel carbon quantum dots-modified N-BiOCl (CDs-N-BiOCl) photocatalyst to activate persulfate (PS) for the complete elimination of endocrine-disruptor bisphenol A (BPA) under visible light irradiation. The photoelectric properties characterization shows that N atoms could replace Cl atoms or adsorb on Bi atoms to form local N 1s states in the BiOCl lattice, accompanied by the introduction of doping energy levels that shorten the electron migration distance. Meanwhile, the decorated CDs could effectively accept the photoinduced electrons from N-BiOCl conduction band to facilitate the charge separation. Thus, the 7%CDs-N-BiOCl (7CNB) nanocomposite synergistically activated PS realized rapid and effective degradation of BPA within 20 min (degradation efficiency and mineralization reached 100 % and 66.4 % respectively). Moreover, the 7CNB/PS system displayed favorable adaptability, durability, and interference resistance. Furthermore, the biotoxicity experiments demonstrated that the photodegradation intermediates promoted the growth of Escherichia coli which indicates its eco-friendliness for practical application. Finally, the electron transfer mechanism and the formation of reactive oxygen species in the photodegradation process were interpreted. In short, this work will present a promising strategy for bismuth-based photocatalysts to be used for the efficient treatment of real water bodies under visible light irradiation.
