Loading cocatalysts on the photoelectrode surface has been one of the most effective strategies to improve the charge separation and redox reaction kinetics during solar-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. The present study demonstrates that a nanoporous BiVO 4 (BVO) photoanode modified with efficient nickel-iron borate species (NiFe-Bi) exhibits significantly enhanced PEC activity and stability in a simulated hydrazine wastewater environment. The NiFe-Bi cocatalysts can enhance the transfer and separation of interfacial charges and significantly improve the charge injection efficiency. The introduction of hydrazine pollutant with low oxidation potential further promotes the transfer of holes from the surface to the electrolyte while inhibiting the dissolution of VO 4 3- from the BiVO 4 film. Importantly, by combining BVO/NiFe-Bi as a photoanode and a commercial platinum sheet as a cathode, a tandem PEC cell can also be constructed to achieve unbiased solar-driven hydrogen evolution from hydrazine wastewater. The hydrogen evolution rate is approximately 4 μmol h −1 cm −2 , and it still maintains a certain stability under long-term light exposure (AM 1.5 G, 100 mW cm −2 ) for 20 h. This work provides new inspiration for designing solar green hydrogen evolution processes.

Semiconductor-based photoelectrochemistry commonly relies on efficient interactions between semiconductor surfaces and adsorbates for promoting charge transfer and efficiently activating inert bonds. But at the repulsive interfaces (e.g., between like-charged substrates and electrodes), such interactions cannot be achieved. Contrary to this paradigm, we find that the van der Waals interaction between a series of N-coordinated Cu complex cations and BiVO 4 photoanodes results in a high photovoltage of 0.53 V and charge transfer efficiency of 96%, along with the photocurrent density approaching the theoretical limit of BiVO 4 . This non-covalent interaction enables the universal generation of nitrogen-centered radicals from directly cleaving native N−H bonds and generates N–N coupling products with a Faradaic efficiency exceeding 96%. Its practical application is further demonstrated in an amplified photoelectrochemical reactor, generating a photocurrent of 409 mA and a yield rate of 6069 μmol h −1 for hydrazine production, which is competitive with most reported N−N coupling methods.

Recently, the controlled synthesis of semiconductor photocatalysts has received much attention in the field of pollutant degradation. In this study, BiVO4 photocatalysts of different crystalline phases (monoclinic scheelite (M-phase), tetragonal zircon (T-phase) and monoclinic–tetragonal heterojunction (M–T)) have been successfully synthesized via a facile microwave-assisted method. The crystalline phases of the products were controlled by switching the organic additives. The photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared samples were evaluated by the degradation of tetracycline (TC) under visible light irradiation. The obtained results clearly showed that the M–T BiVO4 exhibited the highest photodegradation ratio of the three samples of 80.5% in 1 h, which can be attributed to the heterojunction structure between different phases.

Due to its broad-spectrum sterilization ability, glutaraldehyde is widely used for sterilizing medical devices. However, a certain concentration of glutaraldehyde gas in the air can cause harm to the health of medical staff and patients. Due to the long-chain nature of glutaraldehyde and the interference of humidity in the detection environment, its detection is challenging. In this study, octadecahedral BiVO 4 (Octad-BiVO 4 ) with multiple crystal facets was synthesized through crystal facet engineering. Compared with other structures of BiVO 4 , this structure simultaneously achieved the dual effects of active site enrichment and humidity interference suppression, enabling the Octad-BiVO 4 glutaraldehyde gas sensor to exhibit excellent gas sensing performance even under humidity conditions close to those of actual indoor applications. Through XPS, dangling bond calculations and density functional theory calculations, the differences in oxygen vacancies, unsaturated coordinating atoms, and adsorption energy for glutaraldehyde among different crystal facets were revealed. It confirmed the influence of crystal facet engineering on gas sensing performance. Additionally, this work also designed a portable monitoring circuit system for glutaraldehyde, which can not only provide real-time concentration alarms for glutaraldehyde but also transmit information via Bluetooth to the terminal. This work provides a new strategy for detecting trace amounts of glutaraldehyde gas under humid conditions.

Antibiotic contamination in aquatic environments has become an increasingly serious issue, creating an urgent need for efficient and environmentally friendly remediation technologies. Herein, a Bi 0 -BiVO 4 /PPy composite photocatalyst was prepared through a combined hydrothermal, in situ reduction, and oxidative polymerization strategy for visible-light-driven tetracycline (TC) removal. Under optimized reaction conditions, Bi 0 -BiVO 4 /PPy-3 achieved 85.4% TC removal within 60 min and exhibited a significantly improved reaction rate compared with pristine BiVO 4 . The composite also showed good recyclability after regeneration, satisfactory salt tolerance, and stable activity in different water matrices. Moreover, a preliminary wheat-growth assay suggested that the treated solution had lower phytotoxicity than the original TC solution. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is associated with the synergistic effects of Bi 0 introduction and PPy coupling, including improved visible-light absorption and more efficient interfacial charge separation. THz Time-Domain Spectroscopy (THz-TDS) further revealed enhanced terahertz absorption and a modulated refractive response in Bi 0 -BiVO 4 /PPy-3, providing additional evidence for strengthened interfacial coupling and charge transport. Radical trapping experiments and EPR analysis indicate that h + and •O 2 − are the dominant reactive species in the TC degradation process. Based on the available experimental and DFT calculations, a possible Z-scheme like charge transfer pathway and several tentative degradation routes of TC were proposed. Overall, this work suggests that Bi 0 -BiVO 4 /PPy is a promising visible-light-responsive photocatalyst for antibiotic removal from water.

The efficient removal of low-concentration antibiotics from wastewater is a persistent challenge. In this work, we enhance the performance of a W-BiVO4photoanode by modifying it with CoNi-based metal–organic framework nanosheets (CoNi-MOF), constructing a W-BiVO4@CoNi-MOFN composite. This integration markedly improves the separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers. Consequently, the modified photoanode delivers a substantially higher photocurrent density of 3.92 mA cm−2at 1.23 VRHE, representing a 2.3-fold enhancement over the pristine W-BiVO4(1.74 mA cm−2). Furthermore, the photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) system employing the W-BiVO4@CoNi-MOFN photoanode demonstrates significantly superior degradation efficiency for low-concentration tetracycline compared to the system based on unmodified W-BiVO4. The performance enhancement is attributed to a dual mechanism. First, the CoNi-MOF modification optimizes the PEC performance of W-BiVO4, facilitating the generation of photogenerated holes and active oxidants. Second, the composite photoanode exhibits enhanced tetracycline adsorption via π–π stacking and hydrogen bonding, thereby promoting degradation kinetics. The photoanode also shows excellent reusability. Total organic carbon (TOC) analysis and biotoxicity tests confirm effective mineralization and reduced environmental toxicity. Furthermore, the system demonstrates promising concurrent cathodic hydrogen evolution. This work highlights the potential of the W-BiVO4@CoNi-MOFN-based PEC system for integrated wastewater treatment and hydrogen production.

The long-term stability and reuse potential of the photocatalyst are of great concern for the degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater. A recycled photocatalyst with high reusability was synthesized by immobilizing BiVO 4 nanoparticles on alumina foam ceramic (BiVO@AFC) via a convenient dip-coating followed by calcination method. BiVO@AFC show stable photocatalytic activity for Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation over 90 cycles of experiments (180 h), requiring only 4 times of regeneration treatments. The regeneration is simple and economical, washing the photocatalyst with ultrapure water and dried it at 55 °C. Each regeneration could restore the RhB degradation rate to above 85%. Characterizations confirmed the stability of the materials in optical absorption and chemical properties. The dual doping of W and Mo within BiVO 4 (3 W-2Mo,BiVO@AFC) exhibits a synergistic effect, significantly enhancing photocatalytic performance and stability. The co-doping also can suppress the loss in specific surface area and pore volume of BiVO@AFC originated from the normal wear and tear during the photocatalytic process. As a result of that, the RhB degradation rate of 3 W-2Mo:BiVO@AFC remained above 80% over 90 cycles of experiments (180 h) requiring 4 times of regeneration. And the RhB degradation rate can be restored to above 94% by the same regeneration with BiVO@AFC. Photogenerated hole (h + ) plays a major role in removing RhB in this case. While the dual doping of W and Mo is in favour of generating more ·OH and ·O₂ − radicals for degradation by promoting photocharges transfer and separation. These make it a promising candidate for large-scale applications for wastewater treatment.

Developing highly efficient and stable BiVO4 photoanodes facilitates high-efficiency Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, offering a promising pathway for converting solar energy into hydrogen energy. Our study focuses on the rational loading and modification of photoanodic cocatalysts to address the inherent limitations of pristine BiVO4. Specifically, Ni active sites were introduced onto the surface via a vapour-phase cation substitution strategy following the photo-assisted electrodeposition of uniformly loaded FeOOH. The substituted Ni:FeOOH /BiVO4 photoanode achieves a significantly enhanced carrier injection efficiency of 94.5% at 1.23 VRHE, with photocurrent density rising from 1.4 mA·cm-2 to 5.7 mA·cm-2, approximately quadrupling the original photoanode’s performance. The Ni substitution of FeOOH overcomes the traditional performance limitations of BiVO4 by simultaneously enhancing catalytic activity and charge transport kinetics. Consequently, this precise construction of active sites and the synergistic design of charge transport channels substantially improve the intrinsic activity of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), providing a versatile and novel strategy for developing highly efficient and stable photoanodes.

Persistent microbial infections and excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation severely impede diabetic wound healing. Herein, we developed an ultrasound-switchable BiVO 4 /fullerene piezoelectric heterostructure via a one-pot solvothermal method, enabling on-demand transition between bactericidal action and ROS scavenging for treating infected diabetic wounds. Under 8-min ultrasound (US) irradiation, the heterojunction sonosensitizer leveraged piezoelectric polarization to generate substantial ROS in real-time through a narrowed energy band gap and enhanced charge carrier separation and migration efficiency, resulting in the disruption of bacterial membrane integrity and 99.9 % eradication of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Upon US withdrawal, the sonosensitizer spontaneously transitioned to an antioxidative state through fullerene-mediated ROS scavenging, effectively neutralizing excess ROS and restoring cellular redox balance. In an MRSA-infected diabetic wound model, this ultrasound-responsive duality effectively suppressed bacterial proliferation, reduced inflammation, enhanced angiogenesis, and ultimately accelerated wound healing within 14 days. This ultrasound-switchable therapeutic strategy offers promising insights for managing drug-resistant infections and other ROS-mediated biomedical challenges.

Photocatalytic technology enables effective remediation of aqueous pollutants, owing to its environmental compatibility and efficiency. This research aims to optimize the synthesis pathway for bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ), a pivotal photocatalyst, through hydrothermal processing. By modulating the water/ethylene glycol (EG) solvent ratio, we established a high-viscosity system that enables precise control over BiVO 4 nucleation-growth kinetics and crystallographic orientation, generating biomimetic peanut-like hierarchical architectures. The polyol solvent EG, with a viscosity ∼30-fold higher than deionized water and strong coordination capability, critically governs precursor ion behavior. At elevated EG proportions (e.g., H 2 O: EG = 1:2, v/v), the hydroxyl groups of EG molecules preferentially coordinate with Bi 3+ ions to form stable [Bi(EG)_n] 3+ complexes, retarding Bi 3+ release, lowering supersaturation, and shifting nucleation from instantaneous to progressive modes. This transition facilitates uniform primary nanoparticle formation. Integrated characterization employing XRD, UV-DRS, FT-IR, XPS, BET, TEM, and SEM techniques conclusively demonstrated the structural integrity of the synthesized system. The optimized 20EG-BiVO 4 demonstrated exceptional cycling stability (85.4% efficiency retention after 4 cycles) and broad-spectrum degradation capability toward antibiotics and dyes (61.4% enhancement vs. conventional decahedral BiVO 4 ). This acid/base-free synthesis strategy based on EG obviates the necessity for pH regulation, thereby providing simplified processing and reduced costs in developing advanced photocatalytic systems.

Solar water splitting as a promising way to convert solar energy into hydrogen energy has been largely limited by the low efficiency of photoanodes in photoelectrochemical water oxidation. In this work, through deliberately employing a indium tin oxide (ITO) underlayer as an electron transport layer (ETL) and a Fe 2 TiO 5 overlayer as a hole transport layer (HTL), a novel triple-layer ITO/BiVO 4 /Fe 2 TiO 5 heterojunction photoanode was prepared by solution-processed sequential deposition. Owing to the unique ETL/BiVO 4 /HTL heterojunction structure, the photocurrent density at 1.23 V RHE was significantly increased from 1.70 mA/cm 2 for the pristine BiVO 4 photoanode to 4.60 mA/cm 2 for the ITO/BiVO 4 /Fe 2 TiO 5 photoanode. After iron silicate (Fe-Sil) was deposited as a new and efficient cocatalyst, the resultant quaternary ITO/BiVO 4 /Fe 2 TiO 5 /Fe-Sil photoanode achieved an extremely high photocurrent density of 6.19 mA/cm 2 and an ABPE value as high as 2.55%, indicating an outstanding performance toward solar water oxidation. The high performance of the quaternary ITO/BiVO 4 /Fe 2 TiO 5 /Fe-Sil photoanode may be attributed to the desired ETL/BiVO 4 /HTL heterojunction structure in combination with the utilization of the Fe-Sil as an efficient oxygen evolution cocatalyst.

Effectively addressing the interfacial charge transfer between metal-organic framework (MOF) co-catalysts and photoanodes is crucial for enhancing photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. In this work, an in-situ phosphorization strategy is innovatively proposed to construct oxidized phosphorus groups (PO x ) between a bimetallic MOF and BiVO 4 photoanode, without introducing an additional hole transport layer or impeding light absorption of the photoanode. This approach optimizes the electronic environment at the contact interface between the MOF and BiVO 4 . Mediated by the PO x groups, dual-path charge transfer channels (Bi-PO x -Co and Ni-PO x -V) are established. The electron-enriched Co sites serve as active centers for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), while the electron-enriched V sites suppress metal dissolution. Consequently, the fabricated BVO/PO x /CoNi-MOL photoanode achieves an ultra-high photocurrent density of 6.2 mA cm -2 along with excellent long-term stability. The in-situ phosphorization approach presented here offers a powerful and generalizable methodology for enhancing interfacial charge transfer in composite photoelectrode systems.
