Heteroatom doping and defect engineering have been proposed as effective ways to modulate the energy band structure and improve the photocatalytic activity of g-C 3 N 4 . In this work, ultrathin defective g-C 3 N 4 was successfully prepared using cold plasma. Plasma exfoliation reduces the thickness of g-C 3 N 4 from 10 nm to 3 nm, while simultaneously introducing a large number of nitrogen defects and oxygen atoms into g-C 3 N 4 . The amount of doped O was regulated by varying the time and power of the plasma treatment. Due to N vacancies, O atoms formed strong bonds with C atoms, resulting in O doping in g-C 3 N 4 . The mechanism of plasma treatment involves oxygen etching and gas expansion. Photocatalytic experiments demonstrated that appropriate amount of O doping improved the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B compared with pure g-C 3 N 4 . The introduction of O optimized the energy band structure and photoelectric properties of g-C 3 N 4 . Active species trapping experiments revealed ·O 2 − as the main active species during the degradation.

g-C3N4-loaded carbon nanofibers (CNCNF) were obtained via electrostatic spinning and high temperature calcination. Highly crystalline g-C3N4 can be obtained at 800 °C due to the protection of carbon nanofibers. Benefiting from the high conductivity of carbon nanofibers and the high carrier separation efficiency of g-C3N4, CNCNF shows a significantly enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production activity (7.7-fold more than pristine g-C3N4), also, the mechanism of photocatalytic performance enhancement is discussed.

A nanozyme sensor array based on the ssDNA-distensible C3N4 nanosheet sensor elements for discriminating multiple mycotoxins commonly existing in contaminated cereals has been explored. The sensor array exploited (a) three DNA nonspecific sequences (A40, T40, C40) absorbed on the C3N4 nanosheets as sensor elements catalyzing the oxidation of TMB; (b) the presence of five mycotoxins affected the catalytic activity of three nanozymes with various degrees. The parameter (A 0 -A) was employed as the signal output to obtain the response patterns for different mycotoxins with the same concentration where A 0 and A were the absorption peak values at 650 nm of oxTMB in the absence and presence of target mycotoxins, respectively. After the raw data was subjected to principal component analysis, 3D canonical score plots were obtained. The sensor array was capable of separating five mycotoxins from each other with 100% accuracy even if the concentration of the mycotoxins was as low as 1 nM. Moreover, the array performed well in discriminating the mycotoxin mixtures with different ratios. Importantly, the practicality of this sensor array was demonstrated by discriminating the five mycotoxins spiking in corn-free samples in 3D canonical score plots, validating that the sensor array can act as a flexible detection tool for food safety. Graphical abstract A nanozyme sensor array was developed based on the ssDNA-distensible C3N4 NSs sensor elements for discriminating muitiple mycotoxins.

In this work, different mass percent ratios of CoFe 2 O 4 coupled g-C 3 N 4 (w%-CoFe 2 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 , CFO/CN) nanocomposites were integrated through a hydrothermal process for the sonocatalytic eradication of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) from aqueous media. The prepared sonocatalysts were subjected to various techniques to investigate their morphology, crystallinity, ultrasound wave capturing activity and charge conductivity. From the investigated activity of the composite materials, it has been registered that the best sonocatalytic degradation efficiency of 26.71 % in 10 min was delivered when the amount of CoFe 2 O 4 was 25% in the nanocomposite. The delivered efficiency was higher than that of bare CoFe 2 O 4 and g-C 3 N 4 . This enriched sonocatalytic efficiency was credited to the accelerated charge transfer and separation of e − -h + pair through the S-scheme heterojunctional interface. The trapping experiments confirmed that all the three species i.e. • OH, h + and • O 2 − were involved in the eradication of antibiotics. A strong interaction was shown up between CoFe 2 O 4 and g-C 3 N 4 in the FTIR study to support charge transfer as confirmed from the photoluminescence and photocurrent analysis of the samples. This work will provide an easy approach for fabricating highly efficient low-cost magnetic sonocatalysts for the eradication of hazardous materials present in our environment.

Graphic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) as a typical photocatalyst has large specific surface area and high stability. However, the application for supercapacitors is limited because of its poor electrical conductivity. In this paper, three-dimensional (3D) g-C 3 N 4 /Mn 3 O 4 heterostructures with enhanced supercapacitor properties were constructed by a two-step synthesis. The precursor of 3Dg-C 3 N 4 /Mn 3 O 4 was firstly prepared by a freeze-drying process using NaCl as templates. After thermal polymerization at high temperature and subsequent removal of NaCl, 3D g-C 3 N 4 /Mn 3 O 4 heterostructures were constructed. As prepared samples revealed high specific capacitance performance which is related the well dispersion of Mn 3 O 4 in 3D g-C 3 N 4 networks to expose more redox catalytic centers. The result indicated with a current density of 1 A/g, the specific capacitance of sample prepared using optimized conditions was 753.9 F g −1 which is much higher than that of other samples. The stability test indicates the sample revealed high stability (84.1 %) after 5000 cycles under 5 A/g because of excellent structural stability of g-C 3 N 4 . The result provides a useful strategy for the application of g-C 3 N 4 in energy storage.

Photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production is an eco-friendly technique because only H 2 O, molecular O 2 and light are involved. However, it still confronts the challenges of the unsatisfactory productivity of H 2 O 2 and the dependence on organic electron donors or high purity O 2 , which restrict the practical application. Herein, we construct a type-II heterojunction of the protonated g-C 3 N 4 coated Co 9 S 8 semiconductor for photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production. The ultrathin g-C 3 N 4 uniformly spreads on the surface of the dispersed Co 9 S 8 nanosheets by a two-step method of protonation and dip-coating, and exhibits improved photogenerated electrons transportability and e - -h + pairs separation ability. The photocatalytic system can achieve a considerable productivity of H 2 O 2 to 2.17 mM for 5 h in alkaline medium in the absence of the organic electron donors and pure O 2 . The optimal photocatalyst also obtains the highest apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 18.10% under 450 nm of light irradiation, as well as a good reusability. The contribution of the type-II heterojunction is that the migrations of electrons and holes within the interface between g-C 3 N 4 and Co 9 S 8 matrix promote the separation of photocarriers, and another channel is also opened for H 2 O 2 generation. The accumulated electrons in conduction band (CB) of Co 9 S 8 contribute to the major channel of two-electron reduction of O 2 for H 2 O 2 production. Meanwhile, the electrons in CB of g-C 3 N 4 participate in the single electron reduction of O 2 as an auxiliary channel to enhance the H 2 O 2 production.

Designing visible-light-driven, high-efficiency, robust photocatalysts with practical potential is an important direction in the photocatalysis field. Herein, pyrimidine-modified g-C 3 N 4 (Pym-CN) photocatalysts with curled nanosheet morphology were prepared through a facile supramolecular assembly method. Pyrimidine has only two N atoms, thus leading to the deficiency formation in the supramolecular assembly of cyanuric acid with melamine. Upon calcination, the deficiency decreases the polycondensation degree of g-C 3 N 4 , thereby further affecting its morphology and optoelectronic property. The pyrimidine modification can enhance the absorption capacity toward visible light and facilitates the separation of photo-generated carriers. By changing the adding amount of pyrimidine, the optimal Pym-CN photocatalyst exhibits a H 2 evolution rate of 1046 μmol g −1 h −1 under visible light, which is almost 30 times higher than that of pristine g-C 3 N 4 . This work may afford a novel approach to modifying organic polymer semiconductor photocatalysts with small organic molecules of nonplanar structure.

The shortcomings of homogeneous activation for metal/sulfite such as narrow pH range, recovery and potential secondary contamination seriously limit the application of metal/sulfite systems in practical conditions. To overcome these drawbacks, we tested the degradation of metronidazole using an iron-doped graphite carbonitride (5%Fe-g-C 3 N 4 ) as the catalyst to activate sulfite. The mechanism of the reaction was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, radical quenching and chemical probe experiment. The effects of pH, Fe-g-C 3 N 4 , sulfite dosages and common anions were assessed and the degradation pathway of MNZ was also proposed. The results showed that 5%Fe-g-C 3 N 4 was an effective catalyst for sulfite activation in the heterogeneous system and SO 4 − and OH were the main radicals leading to the degradation of metronidazole. After five times of recycle, Fe-g-C 3 N 4 still had a good catalytic activity. Moreover, the Fe-g-C 3 N 4 /sulfite system could degrade metronidazole at a wide pH range of 4–9.

A new photocatalyst of TiO 2 /C 3 N 4 composite (TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 ) was synthesized by the hydrothermal method. The characterization showed that TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 extended absorption light range and enhanced generation efficiency of photo-induced electron. Under the simulated solar irradiation, the photodegradation rate of bisphenol A (BPA) by TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 was twice as fast as that of g-C 3 N 4 . Furthermore, TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 presented the good stability and excellent selectivity for BPA degradation. The high degradation rate of BPA by TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 was demonstrated to be superoxide radical (·O 2 − ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) by radical quenching experiment, which was further evidenced by EPR, XPS, DRS and PL analysis. These findings revealed that TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 can be used as a potential photocatalyst for removing organic pollutants in actual environmental remediation.

In this work, monochlorophenols (MCPs) isomers degradation was investigated by Co-doped g-C 3 N 4 (CCN) using peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as the oxidant. The effects of the doping amount of Co, the concentration of PMS, the loading of catalyst and initial pH of the solution on the catalyst activity were systematically studied. The results showed that MCPs could be degraded effectively by CCN/PMS system. The degradation reaction followed pseudo-first order kinetics. Sulfate radical (SO 4 − ) was found as the major active radicals in the degradation process. MCPs were degraded effectively with the degradation rate order of 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) > 3-chlorophenol (3-CP) > 4-chlorophenol (4-CP). Except for the influence of structural characteristics of MCPs, this degradation rate order was also related to the adsorption behavior of CCN, which was based on the intermolecular interaction. Based on the analysis of the degradation products of MCPs, 1,4-benzoquinone or chlorinated 1,4-benzoquinone had been found to be the main intermediates.

To address challenges in antibiotic wastewater treatment, we synthesized a series of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-based photocatalysts (BCN, PCN, TCN, BTCN, and TCNE-modified PTCN) via defect engineering. TCNE modification disrupted the triazine ring-bridging amino network in PTCN, forming a porous structure with enhanced specific surface area validated by SEM/TEM while retaining the graphene-like framework confirmed by XRD/FTIR. Photoluminescence (PL) analysis revealed prolonged photogenerated carrier lifetime and improved separation efficiency in PTCN, achieving 89.10% degradation of chlortetracycline hydrochloride under visible light—1.65-fold higher than pristine g-C3N4. Mechanistic studies identified superoxide radicals (•O2−) as dominant active species, generated via O2activation at defect sites and efficient electron-hole utilization. Optimized conditions enabled PTCN to maintain high activity across a broad pH range and retain 82.59% efficiency after five cycles. This work advances defect-engineered photocatalyst design for adaptable, high-performance antibiotic degradation, offering practical insights for wastewater remediation.

Solution plasma catalysis has emerged as a promising strategy for the sustainable and rapid production of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) from water and oxygen by clean electricity. However, the uncontrollable electron loss and inefficient utilization of reactive species in solution plasma significantly limit the plasma-to-H 2 O 2 (PTH) conversion efficiency. This lack of control over the plasma environment makes it challenging to design catalysts capable of selectively channeling reactive species toward H 2 O 2 production. Here, we develop modified C 3 N 4 with different functional groups to improve PTH conversion efficiency. The aldehyde-modified C 3 N 4 achieves an unprecedented H 2 O 2 production rate of 4.4 ± 0.1 mM h −1 and a remarkable PTH conversion efficiency of 1.3 %, which is 16 times higher than that of the plasma system without a catalyst. We clarified by density functional calculations and spectroscopic measurements that the improved H 2 O 2 yields and efficiency are due to the modification of the electron-withdrawing groups to promote the generation of 1 O 2 intermediates. This work confirms the critical importance of rational catalyst design to improve PTH conversion efficiency, paving the way for sustainable and rapid solution-based chemical synthesis.
