Co(II)-Based Metal-Organic Framework Derived CA-CoNiMn-CLDHs with Peroxidase-like Activity for Colorimetric Detection of Phenol

Wenjie Tan,Rui Xin,Jiarui Zhang,Lilin Yang,Min Jing,Fukun Ma,Jie Yang

Given the serious harm of toxic phenol to human health and the ecological environment, it is urgent to develop an efficient, low-cost and sensitive nanoenzyme-based method to monitor phenol. MOF-derived nanozyme has attracted wide interest due to its hollow polyhedra structure and porous micro-nano frameworks. However, it is still a great challenge to synthesize MOF-derived multimetal synergistic catalytic nanoenzymes in large quantities with low cost. Herein, we reported the synthetic strategy of porous hollow CA-CoNiMn-CLDHs with ZIF-67 as templates through a facile solvothermal reaction. The prepared trimetallic catalyst exhibits excellent peroxidase-like activity to trigger the oxidative coupling reaction of 4-AAP and phenol in the presence of H2O2. The visual detection platform for phenol based on CA-CoNiMn-CLDHs is constructed, and satisfactory results are obtained. The Kmvalue for CA-CoNiMn-CLDHs (0.21 mM) is lower than that of HRP (0.43 mM) with TMB as the chromogenic substrate. Because of the synergistic effect of peroxidase-like activity and citric acid functionalization, the built colorimetric sensor displayed a good linear response to phenol from 1 to 100 μM with a detection limit of 0.163 μM (3σ/slope). Additionally, the CA-CoNiMn-CLDHs-based visual detection platform possesses high-chemical stability and excellent reusability, which can greatly improve economic benefits in practical applications. Keywords:metal organic framework;nanozyme;colorimetric detection;phenol

Synthesis of a novel acid-base bifunctional Zn/Ca–Zr catalyst for biodiesel application: Experimental and molecular simulation studies

Hewei Yu,Jichao Sun,Xiuxiu Chen,Bing Wang,Xiaohui Liang,Mingjie Gao,Hongyu Si

A novel acid-base bifunctional Zn/Ca–Zr catalyst has been synthesized successfully for biodiesel production from palm oil and acidified oil. The influence of synthetic factors on the catalytic activity of resulting Zn/Ca–Zr were discussed. Furthermore, the FAMEs yield was optimized to achieve the maximum value using the Taguchi approach. Results showed that the catalyst synthesized using a metal stoichiometric ratio of 4 : 4: 4, hydrothermal conditions, and activation temperature of 850 °C exhibited the best activity. The highest FAMEs yield was found to be 94.9% under the conditions of 5 wt% catalyst dosage, methanol/palm oil molar ratio of 20, and temperature of 170 °C at 3 h. The contribution percentage indicated that the methanol/oil molar ratio had the most significant effect on the FAMEs yield. Moreover, the Zn/Ca–Zr catalyst can catalyze the simultaneous esterification and transesterification of acidified palm oil with a 95.1% FAMEs yield and 93.3% acid reduction rate. And a 78.2% FAMEs yield can be maintained after four repeated cycles. Molecular simulations indicated the active site of Zn was more easily attacked by FFAs for esterification, while the active site of Ca was retained to adsorb methanol for transesterification, which explained the catalyst's acid-base bifunctional characteristics.

Electrospun Mutualism–Inspired CA/CMA/PHMB ultrafine bimodal nanofibrous membrane for High–Performance, Antibacterial, and Mosquito–Repellent air filtration

Zungui Shao,Guoyi Kang,Junjie Xie,Ruimin Shen,Haonan Li,Ziyue Zeng,Jiaxin Jiang,Xiang Wang,Wenwang Li,Shumin Guo,Yifang Liu,Gaofeng Zheng

Composite bio–based multifunctional air filtration is a great challenge and development trend for personal protection. This work was inspired by nature mutualism to produce bio–based and essential oil loaded nanofibrous membrane with multiple functions of high–performance, antibacterial, and mosquito–repellent. The cinnamaldehyde (CMA) and poly(hexamethylene biguanide) (PHMB) were introduced into the cellulose acetate (CA) polymer system to achieve functionalization, and then the CA/CMA/PHMB ultrafine bimodal nanofibrous membrane was prepared through one–step electrospinning. Compared to eugenol, the CMA contributed to the refinement of fiber and minimized the reduction of mechanical properties, thermal stability, and hydrophobicity. On the other hand, the PHMB enhanced jet splitting and synergistically improved antibacterial ability with CMA. The filtration efficiency for PM 0.3 , the pressure drop, and the quality factor were 99.78%, 59.5 Pa, and 0.1028 Pa −1 , respectively. The bacteriostatic rates against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , and the mosquito–repellent rate were 99.65%, 99.99%, and 92.7%, respectively. Lastly, the batch preparation of this solution was explored, which contributed to commercialization. This work provides a novel and simple approach to efficiently fabricate multifunctional high–performance air filter, which will promote the development of bio–based and sustainable air filter.

Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metals (K, Ca, Sr) Promoted Cu/SiO2 Catalyst for Hydrogenation of Methyl Acetate to Ethanol

Muhammad Naeem Younis,Zhiheng Ren,Chunshan Li,Erqiang Wang,Jie Li

The advancing effects of various alkali and alkaline earth metals (inclusive of K, Ca, and Sr) modified Cu/SiO2catalysts, prepared with a modified precipitation-gel method, were investigated for the production of ethanol via hydrogenation of methyl acetate. Our results showed that Sr-doped catalysts exhibited the best and most consistent results during catalytic tests. A series of techniques, including X-ray diffraction technique, Raman spectroscopy, N2adsorption/desorption, N2O titration method, FTIR spectroscopy, and H2temperature, programmed desorption and reduction (TPD and TPR), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, which was used to check the detailed characterization of Sr modification in the catalyst and its structural impacts on the properties of the catalyst. These results demonstrated that the addition of 5%Sr could strengthen the intrinsic stability of the catalyst by formulating the appropriate ratio of Cu+/(Cu0+ Cu+) to facilitate catalytic outcome improvement. The addition of 5%Sr-30%Cu/SiO2under the most favorable conditions, resulting in the peak conversion of MA (95%) and ethanol selectivity (96%), indicates its magnificent catalytic stabilizing effects. Furthermore, the best performing catalyst was compared and tested under various conditions (LHSV and temperatures) and a 300 h long life run. Keywords:hydrogenation;methyl acetate;ethanol;strontium

Efficient Catalytic Production of Biodiesel with Acid-Base Bifunctional Rod-Like Ca-B Oxides by the Sol-Gel Approach

Anping Wang,Hu Li,Heng Zhang,Hu Pan,Song Yang

The search for acid-base bifunctional catalysts has become a hot topic in the preparation of biofuels from renewable resources. In the present work, a series of novel acid-base bifunctional metal-boron catalysts were successfully prepared by a sol-gel method and characterized by XRD, IR, SEM, TEM, TGA, BET, and TPD. Among those bifunctional solid materials, the Ca-B(700) catalyst had the highest density of both acid and base sites and showed excellent catalytic performance in the production of biodiesel from nonedible oils with high acid value. Under the optimal reaction conditions of 20/1 methanol/oil mole ratio and 4 wt % catalyst dosage at 105 °C for 2 h, a high biodiesel yield of 96.0% could be obtained fromJatrophacurcas oil in one-pot. In addition, Ca-B(700) was also applicable to producing biodiesel fromFirmiana platanifolia L.f.oil in a relatively low acid value, with an almost quantitative yield (98.5%) at 65 °C after 2 h. The Ca-B(700) catalyst had good stability and reusability, which is a promising acid-base bifunctional catalytic material for the preparation of biodiesel.Keywords:sol-gel synthesis;acid-base bifunctional materials;high/low acid value oils;transesterification;biofuels

Effect of cation type in mixed Ca-Na systems on transport of sulfonamide antibiotics in saturated limestone porous media

Sun Kaixuan,Sun Yuanyuan,Gao Bin,Xu Hongxia,Wu Jichun

Retention and transport of sulfonamides (SAs) in subsurface can strongly affect groundwater quality. In this work, a range of laboratory batch sorption and column transport experiments were conducted to determine the effect of cation type in mixed Ca-Na systems on the retention and transport of two typical SAs, sulfadimethoxine (SDM) and sulfacetamide (SCA), in saturated limestone porous media. Column experimental data showed divalent cation Ca 2+ played a more important role than monovalent cation Na + in decreasing the transport of only SDM in co-cation systems in the saturated limestone media. Further, in the single-cation (i.e., including either Ca 2+ or Na + ) system, increasing ionic strength (IS) of either NaCl or CaCl 2 had little effect on SCA transport; however, increasing of IS of CaCl 2 promoted the retention of SDM in the saturated limestone porous media. This is mainly due to the cation bridging effect of Ca 2+ on SDM and limestone. Overall, SDM showed much higher retention in the limestone columns than SCA, which can be attributed to the two SAs’ different physicochemical properties. Moreover, limestone showed stronger ability to retain the two SAs than quartz sand. Findings in this study suggest that cation type and the concentration of certain electrolyte (e.g., CaCl 2 ) as well as medium type play an important role in controlling the environmental fate and transport of antibiotics.

Macroscopic and microscopic investigation of uranium elimination by Ca–Mg–Al-layered double hydroxide supported nanoscale zero valent iron

Hongwei Pang,Yihan Wu,Shuyi Huang,Congcong Ding,Shun Li,Xiangxue Wang,Shujun Yu,Zhongshan Chen,Gang Song,Xiangke Wang

In the past few decades, uranium (235, 238U(VI)) has turned into a forefront environmental issue due to its extensive use in the nuclear industry and its toxicity and radioactivity. Herein, nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI), which was supported on Ca–Mg–Al-layered double hydroxide (Ca–Mg–Al-LDH/nZVI), was fabricated via an in situ growth route and employed for U(VI) decontamination from aqueous solutions. Spectroscopy and microscopy (SEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, BET, and XPS) technologies were applied for the investigation of the properties of Ca–Mg–Al-LDH/nZVI and the U(VI) elimination mechanism. Ca–Mg–Al-LDH/nZVI had a remarkable BET surface (426.8 m2 g−1), abundant functional groups (i.e., Fe–O, Al–O, –OH, etc.), high efficiency (4 h to achieve equilibrium) and large adsorption capacities (Qmax = 216.1 mg g−1) for U(VI) removal. The decontamination process of U(VI) was observed to be pH-dependent and ionic strength-independent, suggesting that the adsorption was predominated by inner-sphere surface coordination. XPS spectroscopy analyses indicated that the reduction and adsorption of nZVI and the adsorption of Ca–Mg–Al-LDH dominated U(VI) elimination on Ca–Mg–Al-LDH/nZVI. The environmentally friendly synthesis method, excellent physicochemical properties and remarkable removal performance suggested that Ca–Mg–Al-LDH/nZVI was applicable as a potential adsorbent for U(VI) decontamination from wastewater in environmental pollution remediation.

Enhanced adsorption of U(VI) and 241Am(III) from wastewater using Ca/Al layered double hydroxide@carbon nanotube composites

Haijun Chen,Zhe Chen,Guixia Zhao,Zhibin Zhang,Chao Xu,Yunhai Liu,Jing Chen,Li Zhuang,Tasawar Haya,Xiangke Wang

Ca/Al layered double hydroxide decorated carbon nanotube (Ca/Al-LDH@CNTs) composites were fabricated by co-precipitation method and hydrothermal aged treatment. The prepared Ca/Al-LDH@CNTs was characterized by SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, FT-IR, UV–vis and XPS techniques, and applied to remove U(VI) from aqueous solutions under various environmental conditions (i.e., pH, ionic strength, temperature and contact time). The results indicated that the adsorption of U(VI) on Ca/Al-LDH@CNTs was four times higher than that of U(VI) on bare CNTs. The kinetic investigations reflected the chemisorption of U(VI) on Ca/Al-LDH@CNTs through oxygen-containing functional groups. The adsorption isotherms demonstrated that the adsorption of U(VI) was well fitted by Langmuir model and the maximum adsorption capacity of U(VI) on Ca/Al-LDH@CNTs was calculated to be 382.9 mg g −1 at 289.15 K. The thermodynamic parameters calculated from temperature-dependent isotherms suggested that U(VI) adsorption on Ca/Al-LDH@CNTs were endothermic and spontaneous process. Furthermore, Ca/Al-LDH@CNTs could remove ∼91% of 241 Am(III) at pH = 8.0, which confirmed Ca/Al-LDH@CNTs as a promising material for multiply low level radionuclides’ pollution remediation.

Study of reaction mechanism between guaiacol and Ca(OH)2 in water: Development of a novel phenol extraction method

De-Bin Li,Yun-Quan Liu,Yue-Yuan Ye,Shui-Rong Li,Duo Wang

Experiments were conducted to elucidate the mechanism of reaction between guaiacol and Ca(OH) 2 in water based on in situ FT-IR, 1 H NMR, ICP-AES and TGA analyses. Three phases were revealed for this reaction when guaiacol was dropped into the solution of Ca(OH) 2 , and the final molar ratio of guaiacol to Ca 2+ reaches 4. It was found that an acid–base reaction occurs in the first reaction phase. However, the second reaction phase includes not only the acid-base reaction, but also the accompanied coordination reaction between oxygen atom of hydroxyl group in guaiacol and Ca 2+ . The third reaction phase is also the coordination reaction, particularly, the one between the hydrogen atom in guaiacol and Ca 2+ . Based on the mechanism study, a novel circulating precipitation agent was developed and tested for the extraction of phenolic compounds from the simulated wastewater. The result showed that 96.63% guaiacol could be extracted from the simulated wastewater with the novel extraction technology at the optimum reaction conditions.

Utilization of activated sludge and shell wastes for the preparation of Ca-loaded biochar for phosphate removal and recovery

Jing Li,Lu Cao,Bing Li,Haiming Huang,Wei Yu,Cairui Sun,Kehua Long,Brent Young

The activated sludge-based biochar modified by metals performs well for the phosphate adsorbent. The cost of the modification materials and the follow-up treatment of the spent adsorbents are significant limits for the large-scale application of the developed adsorbent. In this study, wasted egg shells and oyster shells, rich in calcium (Ca), were employed to load Ca onto the surface of the activated sludge-based biochar. The results revealed that different forms of Ca on egg shell-modified activated sludge biochar (ESB) and oyster shell modified activated sludge biochar (OSB) induced different adsorption performances. ESB had a greater phosphate adsorption capacity than OSB, where the maximum adsorption capacities were 154.18 mg/g and 129.03 mg/g, respectively. The saturated biochar could slowly release phosphate at different levels of pH; in fact, the phosphate release efficiency of ESB exceeded that of OSB. Economic analysis suggested that the cost of phosphate removal by ESB was $1.13 per kg, and by OSB was $1.22 per kg. The phosphate adsorption using the Ca-loaded biochar revealed good prospects for sustainable development with the advantages of the high efficiency of phosphate removal, low cost and resourceful employment of wastes.

Nan Wang,Baijie Cheng,Shanyi Guang,Hongyao Xu

Near-infrared light-triggered photothermal therapy (PTT) has attracted extensive attention in the field of antibacterial research. This therapy confers advantages such as tissue penetration and acceleration of tissue regeneration . Tannic acid/Fe (TA/Fe), a green gold organic complex, displays excellent photothermal conversion and adhesion abilities. In this study, TA/Fe was assembled on surface of composite microspheres (CA/SP) based hydrogen bond interaction to prepare a novel microsphere dressing (CA/SP@TA/Fe) that shows well photothermal conversion capability and biocompatibility. After 5 cycles of NIR light irradiation , the microspheres still maintain a good warming rate. Under the synergistic effect of NIR, CA/SP@TA/Fe+NIR can greatly improve the antibacterial performance of CA/SP@TA/Fe, exhibiting inhibition rates for Streptococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are over 99 %. In addition, CA/SP@TA/Fe also showed excellent hemostatic ability and accelerated the total healing of cortical injury wounds, with wound closure reaching 92.58 % and 98.54 % on days 7 and 15 of healing. Therefore, CA/SP@TA/Fe microsphere dressings show potential for application as wound dressings.

Efficient production of biodiesel at low temperature using highly active bifunctional Na-Fe-Ca nanocatalyst from blast furnace waste

Yi-Tong Wang,Xiao-Man Wang,Di Gao,Fu-Ping Wang,Ya-Nan Zeng,Jun-Guo Li,Li-Qun Jiang,Qing Yu,Rui Ji,Le-Le Kang,Ya-Jun Wang,Zhen Fang

In this study, nanocatalysts for biodiesel production were prepared via wet impregnation of blast furnace dust (BFD) in Na 2 CO 3 (Na-BFD) and CaCO 3 (Ca-BFD) suspension solutions and calcination at 500 and 600 °C, respectively. Biodiesel yields of 100.0 wt% (Na-BFD 500 ) and 98.3 wt% (Ca-BFD 600 ) were achieved at 65 °C. Synthesized catalysts showed outstanding activity and recyclability, due to the transition of CaCO 3 , Na 2 CO 3 and Fe 2 O 3 to nanocrystals of NaFeO 2 (29.9 nm), Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 (10.5 nm), CaO (100.1 nm) and Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 (50.0 nm). Na-BFD 500 achieved 95.8 wt% biodiesel yield with 16 cycles, whereas Ca-BFD 600 reached 94.1 wt% biodiesel yield with 7 cycles via magnetic separation. BFD containing convertible magnetic and active components (Fe 2 O 3 and CaCO 3 ) was an ideal raw material to synthesize catalyst for biodiesel production with high catalytic efficiency and easy separation. The study provided a practical utilization of industrial solid waste for biodiesel production.
