The leaching of phosphoric acid (PA) from PA-doped polybenzimidazole (PBI) membrane caused by the weak interaction is the origin of its proton conductivity attenuation, which seriously hinders the performance and durability of high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs). In this study, the Heptazine-COF (Hep-COF) featuring abundant basic C = N units and microporous structure was hybridized with the poly (2,5-benzimidazole) (ABPBI) to fabricate the composite membrane for HT-PEMFC applications. The introduced Hep-COF reinforced acid-base interaction with PA, enhanced the capacity to absorb PA, and simultaneously formed robust and continuous hydrogen bond networks among PA, ABPBI, and Hep-COF, resulting in the enhanced conductivity and PA retention ability of PA-Hep-ABPBI membrane under the HT-PEMFC operation. Furthermore, these hydrogen bond networks additionally contribute to enhanced mechanical properties and chemical stability of the composite membranes. Consequently, the optimized sample 20Hep-ABPBI composite membrane showed a considerable proton conductivity of 105 mS cm − 1 at 180 ℃, enabling a peak power density of 479 mW cm − 2 in single cell test- 2.3 times higher than that of pristine ABPBI membrane. In addition, the PA loss rate (26.95 ng h − 1 cm − 2 ) and voltage degradation rate (25 mV h − 1 ) of the single cell with PA-20Hep-ABPBI membrane were also lower than that of pristine ABPBI membrane after the continuous 120 h operation at 180 ℃. This work offered a valuable strategy for designing and developing a kind of high-performance proton exchange membranes.

A stable and high-performance stationary phase is essential to achieve high-resolution separation of complex samples. Covalent organic framework (COF) has superior physicochemical properties and outstanding potential for application in chromatographic separation. However, hydrophilic selectivity and structural stability of COF pose concerns. Composites of COF with poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) are a promising solution to these problems. In this study, silica was first decorated with COF DVA-TAPB to obtain COF DVA-TAPB @SiO 2 microspheres (DVA and TAPB represent 2,5-diethenyl-1,4-benzenedicarboxaldehyde and 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene, respectively). Subsequently, PIL-modified COF DVA-TAPB @SiO 2 (PIL/COF DVA-TAPB @SiO 2 ) microspheres were prepared by polymerization of 1-sulfopropyl-3-vinylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid onto COF DVA-TAPB @SiO 2 . The obtained PIL/COF DVA-TAPB @SiO 2 microspheres served as a multi-mode chromatographic stationary phase and efficiently separated various hydrophobic and hydrophilic analytes. Owing to the synergistic effects between COF DVA-TAPB and PIL, the separation performance of PIL/COF DVA-TAPB @SiO 2 column was significantly superior than COF DVA-TAPB @SiO 2 and PIL/SiO 2 columns. Additionally, the PIL/COF DVA-TAPB @SiO 2 column demonstrated good stability and reproducibility, with intra-day relative standard deviations for retention time <0.14% ( n = 10) and peak area <1.64% ( n = 10) following nearly 1000 continuous injections. This study not only endows functional COF with specific properties, but also paves a new path for the efficient separation and analyses of complex samples.

The composite materials consist of Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) and silica have been regarded as a kind of promising stationary phases due to combination of the large specific surface area and good mechanical strength of porous silica microspheres and the porous structure and the excellent stability of COFs. Herein, a novel COFs-silica composite (SiO 2 @rLZU1, reduced Lan Zhou University-1) was prepared via an in-situ growth strategy with a 32 nm-thick COFs layer on the surface of silica and a 2.2 nm-thick COFs layer on the inner surface of the mesopores of spherical silica (5 μm, 120 Å). With secondary amine and phenyl groups , the novel stationary phase provided hydrophilic, hydrophobic and π-π interactions when used in HPLC, showing different selectivity from typical reversed-phase stationary phases. Probe molecules with aromatic moieties varying in polarity, including acidic (phenol, pyrocatechol, and pyrogallol), basic (aniline, 4-chloroaniline, and 4-nitroaniline) and neutral (benzene homologues) compounds, were all baseline separated on the SiO 2 @rLZU1 column, indicating its excellent separation performance. Besides, the SiO 2 @rLZU1 column also exhibited great repeatability with intraday RSDs of the retention time of three anilines less than 0.31% (n = 6) and peak area less than 1.63% (n = 6). On the SiO 2 @rLZU1 column, satisfied results were achieved in the separation of real samples such as fullerenes and coking wastewater, suggesting the great potential of the as-synthesized stationary phase in HPLC applications.

Sulfonated covalent organic framework (COF) enabled rapid proton conduction via densely and orderly arranged sulfonic acid groups, yet weak interlamellar interactions between COF nanosheets hindered the fabrication of defect-free, large-area membranes. Herein, we employed one-dimensional sulfonated cellulose nanocrystals (SCNC) as dual-function intercalant to achieve the large-scale fabrication of high-performance sulfonated COF nanosheets-based composite membranes. This dual-function intercalant not only combined a rigid framework with proton conduction functionality, but also bridged the COF nanosheets (TpBd-(SO 3 H) 2 ) through hydrogen bonds and π–π interactions, and endowed TpBd-(SO 3 H) 2 /SCNC-0.3 composite membrane with an outstanding mechanical strength of ∼67 MPa and excellent proton conductivity of ∼439 mS cm −1 (90 °C, 95% RH). Moreover, composite membranes up to ∼400 cm 2 were easily produced by the solution casting technique, with properties that matched those of their smaller counterparts. The successful production of several other sulfonated COF nanosheets-based composite membranes demonstrated the general applicability of this approach. This study provided a new mindset for the large-scale preparation of sulfonated COF-based composite membranes, and marked an important step toward their broader implementation.

The occurrence of sulfonamides in the water environment has garnered significant attention due to their potential adverse effects on ecosystems and human health. Despite this significance, effectively removing sulfonamides from polluted water sources remains a challenging task. In this study, a series of hierarchical magnetic porous carbon materials (M-NPC) doped with iron and nitrogen are prepared using a direct carbonization method, employing a covalent organic framework (COF) as a precursor. The resulting M-NPC exhibits a hierarchical structure, high porosity, and abundant N-containing binding sites, enabling efficient removal of sulfamerazine (SMR) within 2 min. Mechanism studies reveal that the adsorption of SMR by M-NPC followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model ( R 2 = 0.999) and the Freundlich model. Furthermore, electrostatic interactions, π-π stacking, and hydrogen bond interactions are identified as the dominant mechanisms contributing to excellent adsorption performance. Additionally, the M-NPC demonstrates easy operation and good regeneration ability, making it highly promising for the efficient removal of sulfonamides from wastewater. This development marks a significant advancement in addressing the challenge of removing sulfonamides from polluted water sources.

Porous carbon sphere materials have a large variety of applications in several fields due to the large surface area, adaptable porosity, and good conductivity they possess. Obtaining a steady carbon sphere using the green synthesis method remains a significant challenge. In this experiment, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were used as a precursor and Fe 3 O 4 NPs were integrated into the precursor in order to synthesize a porous carbon sphere material using the one-step pyrolysis method. COFs have an ordered porous structure, perpetual porosity, large surface area, and low density and display good environmental tolerance. These properties make them an excellent precursor for synthesizing porous carbon sphere, which maintains good morphology at high temperatures, and it is not involved in the removal of dangerous reagent and small size restrictions during the synthesis process. In addition to the formation of a porous carbon sphere, transition metal carbon material that contains N element can be an active catalyst. The composites exhibit better activity when Fe is doped into carbon materials containing N element than that of other doped transition metals including Mn and Co. In this situation, the integration of Fe 3 O 4 NPs and N element in the COF precursor exposed the active sites of the composites and the two substances synergistically improved the electrocatalytic properties, and the composites were named Fe 3 O 4 @NPCS. The constructed Fe 3 O 4 @NPCS/GCE immunosensor was applied as a means of detecting CA19-9 antigen and presented a wide linear range from 0.00001 to 10 U/mL with a low detection limit of 2.429 μU/mL (S/N = 3). In addition, the prepared immunosensor was utilized for detecting CA19-9 antigen in the real human serum, and the recovery rates were in the range from 95.24% to 106.38%. Therefore, a porous carbon sphere prepared by COFs as a precursor can be applied for the detection of CA19-9 antigen in real samples, which could be an excellent strategy for CA19-9 antigen detection and could potentially promote the development of COF materials in various electrochemical fields.

Facing the energy crisis, using the salinity gradient between seawater and freshwater for osmotic energy conversion is a direct way to obtain energy. So far, most nanofluidic membranes utilized for osmotic energy generation are cation-selective. Given that both anion- and cation-selective membranes have the identical importance for energy conversion devices, it is of great significance to develop anion-selective membranes. Herein, an anion-selective membrane is synthesized by in situ growth of imine-bridged covalent organic framework (COF) on ordered anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) at room temperature. The imine groups and residual amino groups of COF can combine with protons in neutral solution, enabling the COF positively charged and efficiently transport of anions. Particularly, due to the asymmetry in the charge and structure of COF/AAO, the as-prepared membrane exhibits excellent ionic current rectification property, which can inhibit ion concentration polarization effectively and possess high ion selectivity and permeability. Using the present COF/AAO membrane, salinity gradient energy can be successfully harvested from solutions with high salt content, and the output power density reached 17.95W m −2 under a 500-fold salinity gradient. The study provides a new avenue for construction and application of anion-selective membranes in the smart ion transport and efficient energy conversion.

The development of non-previous-metal electrocatalyst with low cost, high activity and stability towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains a challenge. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as promising candidates for the preparation of porous metal/nitrogen co-doped carbon catalysts. In the present work, porous Fe-N x nanoclusters/carbon catalysts are prepared by pyrolyzing iron-containing covalent-triazine organic frameworks. It is found that the synthesis conditions including pyrolysis temperature and pressure have great impacts on the surface area of micropores, mesopores and macropores, which in turn influences the ORR activity of catalysts by varying the mass diffusion and the contact of active centers with electrolytes. The optimized catalyst (denoted as Fe 1.2 NC-0.02-800), having the highest both BET and external surface areas, shows much higher kinetic current density and catalytic stability than commercial Pt/C catalyst in ORR process. When being assembled into Zn-air battery, it also exhibits excellent performances in terms of open circuit voltage (1.45 V), power density (210 mW cm −2 at 330 mA cm −2 ) and specific capacity (713.1 mA h g Z n − 1 ), which outperform the corresponding values of Pt/C-based Zn-air battery. Moreover, 15 light-emitting diodes can be powered by two series-connected Zn-air batteries with Fe 1.2 NC-0.02-800 as the air-cathode catalyst, implying its promising application in clean energy conversion field.

The assessment and treatment of heavy metal pollution are eternal subjects of environmental protection. Facile on-site assessment of heavy metal pollution and efficient, rapid removal of pollutes are still challenging. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hold great promise as absorbents for heavy metal pollution treatment. To overcome the application limits of COF powders, a COF-based monolithic composite is prepared by direct in-situ growth of an N/O-rich COF on the surface of a melamine foam (MF). The resultant MF@COF inherits the macro-porous channels of MF, the good crystallinity of COF, and integrates the attractive features of monolithic materials such as ease of operation, facile and highly efficient recovery, and good reusability . The abundant N/O groups endow MF@COF with powerful capture capability towards various heavy metal ions . Its maximum adsorption capacity for Cd 2+ is 278.45 mg/g, and the adsorption equilibrium can be reached within 1–3 s. The adsorption kinetic of Cd 2+ by MF@COF follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model , and the adsorption isotherm conforms to Freundlich model. Rapid adsorption, together with the easy-to-operate feature of monolithic material, make the ultrafast water purification possible. Meanwhile, MF@COF works well for the highly efficient enrichment of Cd 2+ to realize the naked-eye detection of Cd 2+ pollution at low levels, thus may be developed as an important tool for both on-site assessment and rapid treatment of heavy metal pollution.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) and covalent-organic framework (COF) hybrid materials can combine the unique properties of MOF and COF components, and their applications in fluorescence sensing have attracted more and more attention. Herein, ZIF-90 is grown on 3D-COF by a simple in situ growing method in which the 7-amino-4-methylcoumarin (AMC) is encapsulated in ZIF-90 to construct a fluorescent sensor. Chloroquine phosphate (CQP) can coordinate with Zn2+ to decompose the ZIF-90 and release AMC. At 365 nm excitation, the ratiometric fluorescence signal AMC/3D-COF (I430/I598) increases linearly with CQP in a linear range of 4 × 10–5 to 4 × 10–4 M in urine. Under 340 nm excitation, quantitative analysis of CQP in the serum (3 × 10–6 to 4 × 10–5 M) is based on the fluorescence intensity of Zn-CQP/3D-COF (I384/I598). In addition, AMC@ZIF-90/3D-COF (1) exhibits high anti-interference and selectivity in sensing of FA with a “turn off” mode, with a correlation range of 1 × 10–5 to 1 × 10–3 M. The fluorescence color changes triggered by CQP under different excitation conditions, and the different fluorescence responses caused by CQP make it a highly secure anticounterfeiting platform. The synthesized dye@MOF/COF hybrids not only provide a new way to integrate multiple emission to design fluorescent probes for differentiation detection but also offer ideas for the design of anticounterfeiting platforms.

Both environment and human beings were menaced by the widespread application of radioactive uranium, high-performance and effective elimination of uranium from wastewater is of important meaning for development of environmental sustainability in the future. In this study, the water-stable MOF material and the highly crystalline COF were compounded by a mild hydrothermal strategy, which achieved efficient removal of U(VI) through the synergistic effect. The composites showed the characteristics of both COFs and MOFs, which will possess higher stability, larger surface area and faster adsorption efficiency that cannot be carried out by a single component. Batch experiments and characterizations (SEM, TEM, XRD, FT-IR, BET, XPS, etc.) indicated that UiO-66-NH 2 @LZU1 had more stable and multi-layer pore structure and rich active functional groups. The Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetics fitting was more suitable for the U(VI) elimination process. The greatest uranium adsorbing capacity of UiO-66-NH 2 @LZU1 (180.4 mg g −1 ) was observed to exceed the UiO-66-NH 2 (108.8 mg g −1 ) and COF-LZU1 (65.8 mg g −1 ), which reached the excellent hybrid effects. Furthermore, FT-IR and XPS analyses confirmed that the most nitrogen-containing group from COF-LZU1 and oxygen-containing group of UiO-66-NH 2 could be combined with U(VI). In addition, electrostatic interaction was also a mechanism during the removal process. This work displayed that UiO-66-NH 2 @LZU1 was a prospective hybrid material for radioactive waste remediation. The compound method and application mentioned in this work had provided a theoretical basis for designing and developing multi-functional composite adsorbents, which contributed to the development of new materials for radioactive wastewater treatment technologies.

The BET specific surface area of COF-TP was 43.65 m 2 ·g − 1 and the pore size was about 13.658 Å. A N-doped porous carbon material(COF−TP − C) was prepared by heating the COF-TP at 700 °C under nitrogen protection. The BET specific surface area of COF−TP − C was 398.15 m 2 ·g − 1 and the pore size was about 10 Å. COF−TP exhibited a significant pseudocapacitance characteristic in 6 M K(OH) 2 electrolyte with the highest specific capacitance of 283 F·g − 1 at 1 A·g − 1 current density in three electrode configuration. The specific capacitance retention was about 88 % after 20,000 cycles. COF−TP − C showed the maximum specific capacitance of 449.5 F·g − 1 at the current density 1 A·g − 1 and a good cyclic performance of 77 % after 3000 GCD cycles(93 % after 1000 cycles) at the current density of 5 A·g − 1 , and retained 99.2 % after 5000 cycles at the current density of 1 A·g − 1 . Both COF−TP and COF−TP − C showed good capacitance performance and potential application in supercapacitors.
