Nanocellulose-based aerogels have been considered as one of the ideal candidates for CO 2 capture in practical applications owing to their lightweight and porous properties. Additionally, various adsorbents with amine groups have been widely used as effective CO 2 capture and storage strategies. Herein, amino-functionalized aerogels were prepared by sol-gel and freeze-drying methods using two typical nanocelluloses (cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs)) as substrates. In addition, the reaction parameters for grafting and amino functionalization were optimized. The CNC and CNF aerogels could be easily modified by the hydrothermal growth of the amino group, and they exhibited attractive properties in terms of CO 2 adsorption, recyclability, thermal stability , hydrophobicity , and CO 2 /CH 4 mixture separation. The amino-functionalized CNF aerogel exhibited superior performance to the CNC aerogel, which was attributed to the increased cross-linking binding sites for hydrogen bonding in the CNF aerogel. The results of this study indicated that amino-functionalized nanocellulose aerogels can be considered a promising biodegradable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly material for CO 2 capture and removal of CO 2 from CH 4 .

Design of efficient CO 2 adsorbent is an effective way to capture CO 2 . Bamboo-derived activated carbon is a promising CO 2 adsorbent. Inspired by this, carbonized unidirectional polyimide (CUPI) aerogels were newly designed by the ice templating method using directional freezing technology. The pore property of CUPI aerogel can be tuned by changing the solidification velocity, and a series of CUPI aerogels were designed to explore the CO 2 capture performance in view of pore morphology/topology. As a result, the obtained CUPI-8 exhibits higher CO 2 adsorption capacity compared to carbonized polyimide aerogels due to the synergistic effect of micropores and lamellar pores. Specially, the CO 2 adsorption capacity over CUPI-8 can be up to 5.75 mmol/g at 20 bar and 298 K. Furthermore, the adsorption isotherm of CUPI-8 still shows an upward trend even nearly 20 bar. The isosteric adsorption heat (Q st ) value of CUPI-8 is nearly in the ideal scope of 30–50 kJ mol −1 . The efficient CO 2 adsorption performance and good chemical stability of CUPI aerogel makes it a promising absorbent for practical application. This work provides a new opportunity for researching the effect of pore morphology/topology and the synergistic effect of hierarchical pores on CO 2 capture.

The selective electrochemical reduction of CO 2 to CO is a promising solution for the design of carbon-neutral, sustainable processes. Achieving a highly selective single reduction product is still challenging because of the energetically favorable competing hydrogen evolution reaction. We report the fabrication of N-doped sponge-like porous graphitic carbon structures embedded with Fe nanoparticles (Fe@NPC) via the pre-modification of a metal-organic framework (IRMOF-3(Zn)) with carboxyferrocene, followed by pyrolysis . The as-prepared Fe@NPC exhibited a 96.4% CO Faradaic efficiency at –0.5 V RHE and good stability. The exceptional CO 2 reduction performance is attributed to the unique structure of the composite catalyst, which provides abundant hierarchical pores that increase CO 2 adsorption and mass transfer, and active Fe sites that synergistically accelerate the kinetics of CO generation. The in situ attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared analysis provided proof of the improved ability of Fe@NPC to accumulate the crucial intermediate *COOH compared with other pyrolyzed porous carbons. Fe@NPC was used in a Zn-CO 2 battery that delivered a maximum power density of 3.0 mW cm –2 , evidencing its potential for application in energy-converting devices.

In the present work, we report an investigation of using an anionic surfactant sulfonated lignin (SL) to promote gas hydrate formation for CO 2 capture from a CO 2 /CH 4 gas mixture. The experiments were performed at 277.15 K in a stirred tank reactor. The initial overpressure (driving force) for hydrate formation was fixed at Δ P = 2.5 MPa. The impacts of the SL presence on hydrate growth behavior and CO 2 separation efficiency were elucidated. The results indicated that hydrate nucleation was prolonged in the presence of SL but this stage was accelerated when adding 1.0 mol% tetrahydrofuran (THF) into the SL solution. Compared to THF/SL and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solutions, CO 2 recovery obtained in SL solutions was increased to 63.5 ± 2.9% and the separation factor was 4.0 ± 0.8. Gas consumption obtained in SL solutions was higher than that obtained in other systems like liquid water, SDS solution, THF solution, and tetra- n -butyl phosphonium bromide (TBPB) solution. Therefore, sulfonated lignin can be used as a promising surfactant to improve hydrate formation kinetics as well as the efficiency of CO 2 capture from CO 2 /CH 4 gas mixture, but there still exists a space to increase the CO 2 selectivity in the presence of SL.

Both material choice and filler/organic interface are crucial in mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for sub-nano-size gas separations and yet, the interface–performance relationship is still a subject of intense debate due to challenging interfacial detection. Herein, two UiO-66-type MOFs (amino-functionalized UiO-66-NH2 and isopropenyl-functionalized UiO-66-MA) are incorporated in cross-linked CO2–philic polyethylene oxide (PEO) matrix based on judicious material screening for CO2 capture. The reactive material UiO-66-MA is stitched together with methacrylate-capped PEO in situ during UV-induced copolymerization to generate highly efficient gas transport passages with conceivably good interfaces. Poor interface is observed by substituting UiO-66-MA with non-reactive UiO-66-NH2 in MPCM (MOF/polymer composite membrane). The interfacial conditions of CO2–philic MPCMs are carefully assessed via advanced physicochemical characterizations for clarifying the correlation between interface and separation performance. The reactive material UiO-66-MA containing MPCM with good interface demonstrates higher gas permeability (up to 1450 barrers) with similar selectivity (up to 45.8 for CO2/N2) when compared to non-reactive UiO-66-NH2 containing MPCM. The mixed gas test also shows high CO2 permeability of 1439 barrer and CO2/N2 selectivity of 37.6 in our MPCM. We also observe unexpected suppressed plasticization/swelling behaviour in UiO-66-MA containing MPCM and enhanced plasticization in UiO-66-NH2 containing MPCM through analysis of gas separation performance in the range of 1–10 atm, which might be utilized as a potential interface assessment tool for nanocomposites. Moreover, the performances of our CO2–philic MPCMs can be optimized further to surpass the (2008) Robeson Upper Bound for highly efficient sustainable CO2 capture.

Bioethanol has garnered widespread attention as a potential substitute for traditional fossil fuels. Focusing on the treatment of bioethanol fermentation exhaust is crucial for optimizing bioethanol recovery and achieving carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) purification. This study successfully achieved the large-scale synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (LSZIF-8), which was then incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to fabricate large-area ZIF-8/PDMS/PVDF mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for bioethanol recovery from fermentation exhaust via vapor permeation (VP) processes. The ZIF-8/PDMS/PVDF MMMs exhibited a 1.5-time increase in ethanol permeability and selectivity improved by 1.7 times compared to the PDMS/PVDF membrane. The mass transport behavior of ethanol and CO 2 molecules within the membrane, as well as examining the interactions between different components was systematically explored. It delves into the disparities in separation performance between PDMS/PVDF membrane and ZIF-8/PDMS/PVDF MMMs with nitrogen (N 2 ), water vapor as the third component. Notably, high-quality LSZIF-8 crystals serves as a crucial source of raw materials for the continuous preparation of high-performance MMMs, addressing the limitation of traditional nanoparticle fillers in terms of scalability for production. This study paving new avenues for purifying fermentation exhaust and recovering bioethanol, while simultaneously present significant potential for industrial applications.

Mixed matrix membranes with ionic liquids and molecular sieve particles had high CO 2 permeabilities, but CO 2 separation from small gas molecules such as H 2 was dissatisfied because of bad interfacial interaction between ionic liquid and molecular sieve particles. To solve that, amine groups were introduced to modify surface of molecular sieve particles before loading with ionic liquid. SAPO 34 was adopted as the original filler, and four mixed matrix membranes with different fillers were prepared on the outer surface of ceramic hollow fibers. Both surface voids and hard agglomerations disappeared, and the surface became smooth after SAPO 34 was modified by amine groups and ionic liquid [P 66614 ][2-Op]. Mixed matrix membranes with composites of amine-modified SAPO 34 and ionic liquid exhibited excellent CO 2 permeability (408.9 Barrers) and CO 2 /H 2 selectivity (22.1).

Efficient recovery of Li + from lithium-ion batteries (LiBs), which also include Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , or Mn 2+ in the cathode material, remains a formidable challenge because the sizes and physicochemical properties of these ions. Composite lamellar membranes are emerging as highly ion-selective nanochannels with controllable interlayers. Herein, Li + /Co 2+ was precisely separated through two-dimensional MXene/δ-MnO 2 composite nanochannels under an electric field. The nanochannels were constructed on tubular ceramic membranes via hydroxyl crosslinking. The membrane layer spacing can be extended to 5.7 Å by electrostatic repulsion between MXene and δ-MnO 2 nanosheets, which is suitable for Li + /Co 2+ separation. Under an electric field of 2 mA cm −2 , Li + /Co 2+ was nearly completely separated, with a high Li + flux of 0.0094 mol m -2 h −1 , and the energy consumption was ∼0.315 kW h (mol Li + ) -1 . Similarly, near-complete separation of Li + /Ni 2+ and Li + /Mn 2+ can be achieved at a current density of 2 mA cm −2 . The transport of Li + in solution was accelerated under a positive electric field and by partial dehydration in the nanopores. Meanwhile, the zeta potential was distinctly more negative in the composite membranes than in individual MXene or δ-MnO 2 . Consequently, Co 2+ was rapidly adsorbed on the negatively charged membrane surface through electrostatic interactions and complexation, forming a positively charged Co 2+ layer that electrostatically repelled further Co 2+ adsorption, ultimately achieving near-complete separation of Co 2+ . Owing to their stable and robust structure, the MXene/δ-MnO 2 membranes maintained high separation efficiency in acidic solutions containing Li + and Co 2+ and remained stable over eight cycles (up to 14 h) of ion separation under an electric field. This approach can potentially realize 2D membrane composites for efficient ion separation in practical applications.

Effectively reducing the miscible pressure of CO 2 -oil is a crucial measure to achieve CO 2 miscible flooding. Alkanes have been extensively studied to improve the miscibility of CO 2 and oil, but few studies have elucidated the potential mechanisms and principles of their effects. In this work, the effect of pentane as a typical alkane on the miscibility behavior between CO 2 and oil is clarified. The interfacial tension of CO 2 -oil was measured by the high temperature and high pressure interfacial tension tester. The minimum miscible pressure (MMP) was extrapolated by the vanishing interfacial tension method. Meanwhile, the physical parameters (solubility, density, etc.) of oil and CO 2 were measured by visual PVT instrument. Oil composition analysis and AFM morphological scanning explained the extraction effect of CO 2 on oil. Finally, pentane-enhanced CO 2 flooding recovery was evaluated by physical simulation device. Results indicated that introducing the pentane effectively reduces the interfacial tensions and MMP, achieving an impressive 10.42% MMP reduction. Moreover, the addition of pentane to CO 2 -oil significantly increases the solubility of CO 2 in oil and the volume expansion of oil. CO 2 primarily extracts oil components with carbon numbers below C 10 . As CO 2 enrichment progresses, the concentration of resin and asphaltene increases, proved by a more roughening of the surface deposition morphology. Pentane can improve the solubilization and extraction of oil by CO 2 , and increase the recovery of CO 2 flooding by 19.94 %. This study is expected to facilitate the efficient utilization of CO 2 miscible flooding and provide the theoretical and technical support for its practical implementation in oilfield.

Hydrate-based CO 2 storage is a highly promising technology for long-term stable CO 2 storage in sediments. However, the unclear displacement and hydration mechanisms, along with the low conversion rate of CO 2 hydrates, have hindered the field application. Here, we report a method of the injection of CO 2 /water emulsion to replace liquid CO 2 to regulate the ratio of CO 2 to water in the sediment pores and to enhance their contact ability, which can significantly improve the CO 2 hydrate conversion rate. Compared to liquid CO 2 injection, emulsion injection can flow through more sediment pores with an increase in displacement efficiency by 45 %-62 %, which leaves a CO 2 -to-water ratio within the pores that is more suitable for hydrate formation, ultimately tripling the hydrate conversion rate. We have outlined the hydrate growth mechanisms for both injection forms, where the micron-sized CO 2 droplets within the emulsion can greatly reduce the barrier effect of hydrate film. Under the combined influences, the CO 2 storage density in hydrates up to 91.2 kg/m 3 for CO 2 /water emulsion injection is 47.8 % higher than that of 61.7 kg/m 3 for liquid CO 2 injection. Our work provides a new approach to high conversion CO 2 hydrate sequestration in submarine sediments.

Due to low cost and high efficiency, amino-based functionalized deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been widely investigated in CO2 capture. The amino group reacted with CO2 in a quantized ratio of 2:1 to form a carbamate and quaternary ammonium cation, which not only limited the absorption capacity of the amino group but also led to a dramatic increase in viscosity. In this work, we proposed a new strategy to improve the absorption capacity of amino-based functionalized DESs and inhibit viscosity increase by changing the proton transfer site from –NH2 to –N═ to prevent the formation of –NH–COO– and –NH3+ using aromatic amines and ethylene glycol (EG). EG exhibited significant activation effect on 4-aminopyridine (AP). The absorption capacity of AP was enhanced from 0.10 mol of CO2/mol of DES to 0.60 mol of CO2/mol of DES at 303.15 K and 101.3 kPa after forming DES with EG. In addition, the saturated DES could be rapidly regenerated within 20 min at 353.15 K, and the absorption performance was maintained after six cycles. Results of proton nuclear magnetic resonance and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectra revealed the formation of carbamate and the protonation of pyridine nitrogen. The new reaction path effectively reduced the increase in viscosity. The viscosity of AP/EG (1:3) DES increased slightly from 29.17 to 68.40 mPa·s after absorption.

Compared with traditional commercial adsorbent zeolite pellets, binder-free molecular sieves can provide better adsorption performance. In this paper, we reported a novel method to synthesize binder-free zeolite X pellets (BF-Z), that is, zeolite X powder was intricately combined with halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) using hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), and then the sample was calcinated to form crystals, where HPMC was decomposed and HNTs was also completely converted into binder-free X zeolite. The synthesized BF-Z showed the highest CO 2 adsorption capacity of 4.98 mmol/g at 303 K and 1 bar, compared with commercial NaX zeolites produced by Jianlong, Sigma and UOP companies. Calculated by IAST model, the separation coefficient of CO 2 to N 2 (CO 2 /N 2 = 25/75) on BF-Z is 74 at 303 K and 1 bar. The great separation performance of CO 2 from N 2 (CO 2 /N 2 = 25/75) was also exhibited in breakthrough experiments and a designed VSA process. Compared with commercial NaX (UOP), in breakthrough experiment, BF-Z presented high CO 2 adsorption capacity and rapid adsorption rate; and in designed thirty six-step vacuum swing adsorption process (VSA), the six-bed VSA system using BF-Z as adsorbents demonstrated excellent separation performance such as high CO 2 purity and recovery, low energy consumption and enhanced CO 2 production capacity. The notable efficacy of BF-Z in CO 2 adsorption and separation underscores its promising utility in both commercial and industrial settings.
