Ru/MgO Catalysts Modified with Various Alkali Metals (Na, Cs, K) for COx-Free H2 Production from NH3 Decomposition

Tianxu Su,Bin Guan,Chunzheng Zheng,Jiefei Zhou,Zhen Huang

Developing low-temperature, high-efficiency ammonia decomposition catalysts for hydrogen production is essential for the broad application of hydrogen. This study conducted a systematic investigation of Ru/MgO catalysts modified with different alkali metals (Na, K, Cs), unveiling the impact of these modifications on catalyst performance and developing a highly efficient low-temperature ammonia decomposition catalyst. The addition of all alkali metals enhances the catalytic performance of Ru/MgO for ammonia decomposition, especially the addition of K, which results in the optimal enhancement of the catalyst, achieving a 75% ammonia decomposition efficiency at 350 °C (GHSV= 2,000 mL/h·gcat), more than doubling the performance of the unmodified Ru/MgO catalyst. The study revealed that the addition of potassium (K) altered the rate-determining step of the ammonia decomposition reaction from nitrogen recombination to the dissociation of the first hydrogen atom, and reduced the overall energy barrier required for the reaction. This facilitated the desorption of nitrogen from the Ru surface and the conversion of NH3, thereby accelerating the rate of the ammonia decomposition reaction.

NiPdMo nanoparticles reduced by Cs[closo-B6H7] as high-performance catalysts for hydrogen generation from hydrolysis of ammonia borane

Haixu Zhao,Yandong Liu,Weikang Zhang,Xiaoqing Peng,Qilun Tang,Qiong Ding,Xuefan Deng,Haibo Zhang

The synthesis of efficient catalysts for the hydrolysis of ammonia borane (NH 3 BH 3 , AB) is a matter of critical importance and immediate necessity, as it is currently considered a promising approach for the production of hydrogen. The synergy of interactions between different metals has been widely applied in the hydrolysis of AB. In this work, we first applied Cs [ closo -B 6 H 7 ] as the reductant to prepare a series of Ni x Pd y Mo z NPs catalysts using a simple in-situ reduction method. The structural and physical chemical properties of the as-prepared catalysts are investigated employing a multitude of various characterizations. Utilizing the optimal catalyst Ni 0·3 Pd 0·7 Mo 0.2 NPs, AB hydrolysis can be completed at room temperature in just 21 s. This catalyst exhibits a lower activation energy ( Ea  = 52.3 kJ mol −1 ) and relatively higher activity (TOF = 252.7 mmolH 2 ·mmol metal −1 min −1 ), which greatly outperforms many previously reported similar or corresponding catalysts. The enhancement in catalytic activity is ascribed to the moderate reducibility of Cs [ closo -B 6 H 7 ] and the synergistic interaction among Ni, Pd, and Mo. These results suggest the promise of multi-metal catalysts derived from Cs [ closo -B 6 H 7 ] for the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of hydrogen storage materials.

Characterizing potassium-assisted lignocellulose pyrolysis process based on the multi-parallel compensation-simplified distributed activated energy model (CS-DAEM)

Shan Cao,Zhiqiang Chen,Ziyue Tang,Yingquan Chen,Mingwei Xia,Haiping Yang,Wei Chen,Xu Chen,Hanping Chen

Potassium-assisted biomass pyrolysis is highly efficient for product poly-generation and upgrading. In this study, kinetics modeling of over-saturated potassium (K 2 CO 3 )-assisted lignocellulose pyrolysis process was carried out by using the modified Friedman-based master plot (MF-MP) method combined with multiple-parallel compensation-simplified distributed activation energy model (CS-DAEM). The effects of K 2 CO 3 dosage on the lignocellulose pyrolysis process were also studied. MF-MP results show that all the K 2 CO 3 -assisted pyrolysis processes of cellulose, xylan, and lignin obey the Avrami-Erofeev (Am) nucleation mechanism, where potassium slightly decreases the activation energies. The potassium-assisted pyrolysis process of typical lignocellulose (bamboo) also obeys the Am mechanism, and 3G-Am-CS-DAEM modeling of the processes achieves R 2 > 0.999. By fixing the pre-exponential factor, the compensation effect was simplified. Based on modeling results, the activation energy decreases as potassium dosage increases from 0.01 mmol/g to 10 mmol/g. This study provides an effective kinetics approach to characterize the potassium-assisted biomass pyrolysis process.

Morphological and genomic change in lipase-producing Bacillus licheniformis NCU CS-5 induced by atmospheric room temperature plasma mutagenesis

Junxin Zhao,Yiman Wu,Yuhan Yao,Tonglei Zhou,Yiming Xu,Jingyi Gui,Didi Guo,Xinshuo Yang,Deguo Wang,Xianghui Yan,Ping Yu,Zheling Zeng,Fugang Xiao

This study investigates the effects of atmospheric room temperature plasma (ARTP) mutagenesis on the morphological and genetic modifications of the lipase-producing strain Bacillus licheniformis NCU CS-5. While traditional strain improvement methods often suffer from low mutation rates and uneven mutation distribution, ARTP mutagenesis offers a powerful and efficient alternative. The significance of this study lies in its potential to enhance lipase production, a key enzyme in various industrial applications, through the generation of high-performance mutant strains. The gap in existing literature pertains to the limited understanding of ARTP-induced mutations in B. licheniformis and their impact on enzyme production. The novelty of this study is to explore the morphological and genetic changes induced by ARTP and to identify key genetic determinants contributing to these changes. Key findings include significant morphological alterations, higher intracellular Ca2+ levels, and numerous single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) and insertions/deletions (InDels) in the mutant strain. These findings imply that ARTP mutagenesis can effectively enhance lipase production, paving the way for optimized industrial microbial strains.

Preparation and characterization of unidirectional water conducting double-layer PVA/CS/ZnO-PLA/ZnO nanofiber membranes for wound healing

Zhiyuan Chen,Binjie Xin

During the wound healing process, the surrounding tissue fluid plays a crucial role. However, excessive exudate can lead to wound infection and over-hydration, thereby delaying the healing process. Therefore, developing a novel wound dressing that can unidirectionally remove excess biological fluids and effectively inhibit bacterial infection is particularly important. This study successfully utilized electrospinning technology to prepare a nanofiber dual-layer membrane with unidirectional water transport functionality. Its inner layer consists of polylactic acid (PLA) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanofibers, providing excellent hydrophobic and antibacterial properties. The outer layer is composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), chitosan (CS), and nanoscale zinc oxide (ZnO) nanofibers, offering outstanding hydrophilicity and liquid absorption capability. Experimental results demonstrate that this nanofiber dual-layer membrane exhibits outstanding physical, chemical, and biological properties, with a mechanical strength of up to 6.4 Mpa and breathability 17.47 mm/s and antibacterial property is outstanding. In practical applications, this dressing can effectively expel excess biological fluids within just 5 s, preventing wound over-hydration and providing an innovative and feasible solution for the effective treatment of chronic wounds.

Tailoring photoluminescence stability in double perovskite red phosphors A2BAlF6:Mn4+ (A = Rb, Cs; B = K, Rb) via neighboring-cation modulation

T. T. Deng,E. H. Song,Y. Y. Zhou,L. Y. Wang,Q. Y. Zhang

Three isotypic double perovskites A2BAlF6:Mn4+ (A = Rb, Cs; B = K, Rb) were synthesized via a facile co-precipitation method at room temperature. XRD Rietveld refinements and Raman spectra indicate that the neighboring smaller A-site or larger B-site cation in A2BAlF6:Mn4+ lowers structural stability, but suppresses the [AlF6] octahedron to increase the crystal field strength and bond strength of the Al–F bond. Cs2KAlF6:Mn4+ presents a sharp line red light and excellent moisture resistance, but experiences severe thermal quenching. In comparison, altering the A- or B-site cation to Rb, Rb2KAlF6:Mn4+ and Cs2RbAlF6:Mn4+ shows blue shifts in emission and declining water resistance, but enhancements in thermal stability. A combination of static and dynamic emission degradations demonstrates that the water resistance of Mn4+ emission mainly relies on the structural stability of the host matrix; meanwhile, the thermal stability highly depends on the rigidity of its local accommodation. The variations of the temperature-dependent white light-emitting diode (WLED) performances further evidence their sufficient thermal stability for LED applications. These findings suggest that neighboring-cation modulation might be a feasible guideline for exploiting stable Mn4+-activated fluoride red phosphors in warm WLED applications.

AIn4S6Cl (A = Rb and Cs) and Pb5Sn3Q10Cl2 (Q = S and Se): quaternary chalcohalides with mixed anionic coordination exhibit photocurrent responses

Lin-Tao Jiang,Ming-Ze Li,Xiao-Ming Jiang,Bin-Wen Liu,Guo-Cong Guo

Mixed-anionic compounds have caught considerable attention due to their flexible coordination manners and abundant physical properties. Four new chalcohalides RbIn4S6Cl (1), CsIn4S6Cl (2), Pb5Sn3S10Cl2 (3) and Pb5Sn3Se10Cl2 (4) were successfully obtained by the high-temperature halide salt flux method. Compounds 1 and 2 have layered structures that consist of octahedral InS6 and aliovalent-anionic InS3Cl units. Compounds 3 and 4 feature 3-D structural frameworks built by [Pb4SnQ8Cl4]6− and [PbSn2Q6]2− (Q = S and Se) polyhedral chains, in which partial Pb2+ cations are coordinated by Q2− and Cl− anions. Compounds 1–4 have optical band gaps close to the wavelength range of visible light and exhibit significant photocurrent responses of 28.75 nA cm−2, 55.12 nA cm−2, 19.58 mA cm−2, and 36.12 μA cm−2 with on/off ratios 30.0, 2.5, 15.7 and 2.6, respectively, implying their potential for photovoltaic applications. To the best of our knowledge, compound 3 has the largest photocurrent response among all non-oxides. In addition, the activation energies of 1–4 are well below 0.3 eV, which makes these compounds interesting for potential applications in electrochemical devices. This work sheds light on the exploration of promising photocurrent response materials in the mixed-anionic compound system.

Bionic Mineralization Method on Designing and Preparation of CS/HA and CMCS/HA Composite Coating and Its Antibacterial Properties Study

Chenyang Xu,Wenzhu Li,Linyi Zhang,Jiakai Xu,Peng Han,Bin Chen

Poly(chitosan)/hydroxyapatite (CS/HA) and carboxymethyl poly(chitosan)/hydroxyapatite (CMCS/HA) composite coatings were successfully fabricated via biomimetic mineralization, with their structural characteristics and properties systematically analyzed. As the CS concentration increased during fabrication, the growth morphology of CS/HA coating transitioned from clustered to sheet-like structures, forming dense and uniform composite coating with strong substrate adhesion and excellent biocompatibility. The CMCS/HA coatings exhibited a coral-like structure comprising spherical particles, which ensured higher substrate coverage and demonstrated superior corrosion resistance. At 20 g/L, coatings prepared by mixing pre-calcified solution A with CMCS and then adding biomimetic mineralization solution A (defined as YOCS), or by mixing pre-calcified solution A with a mixture of biomimetic mineralization solution A and CMCS (defined as FOCS), both show optimum structure. Coatings incorporating 30 g/L CS or 20 g/L CMCS in the biomimetic mineralization solution exhibited optimum corrosion resistance, antibacterial activity, and biocompatibility.

CS/CoFe2O4 nanocomposite as a high-effective and steady chainmail catalyst for tetracycline degradation with peroxymonosulfate activation: performance and mechanism

Yu Weiwei,Li Yueqi,Shu Minghui,Liu Cong,Liang Yue,Mao Yufeng,Tan JiangLin,Liu Yang,Ai Ting

Tetracycline becomes a crucial measure for managing and treating communicable diseases in both human and animal sectors due to its beneficial antibacterial properties and cost-effectiveness. However, it is important not to trivialize the associated concerns of environmental contamination following the antibiotic's application. In this study, cobalt ferrate (CoFe 2 O 4 ) nanoparticles were loaded into chitosan (CS), which can avoid the agglomeration problem caused by high surface energy and thus improve the catalytic performance of cobalt ferrate. And it can avoid the problem of secondary contamination caused by the massive leaching of metal ions. The resulting product was used as a catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of tetracycline (TC). To determine the potential effects on TC degradation, various factors such as PMS dosing, catalyst dosing, TC concentration, initial solution pH, temperature, and inorganic anions (Cl − , H 2 PO 4 − and HCO 3 − ) were investigated. The CS/CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS system exhibited superior performance compared to the CoFe 2 O 4 -catalyzed PMS system alone, achieving a 92.75% TC removal within 120 min. The catalyst displayed high stability during the recycling process, with the efficiency observed after five uses remaining at a stable 73.1%, and only minor leaching of dissolved metal ions from the catalyst. This confirms the high stability of the catalyst. The activation mechanism study showed that there are free radical and non-free radical pathways in the reaction system to degrade TC together, and SO 4 •− and 1 O 2 are the primary reactive oxygen radicals involved in the reaction, allowing for effective treatment of contaminated water by TC.

Synergistic effect of novel CS/N-TiO₂/NT coating and low temperature in prolonging the storage life of Stropharia rugosoannulata

Xingjun Lu,Kun Qiao,Xinyan Liu,Xiaozhen Peng,Bangzhu Peng

Postharvest Stropharia rugosoannulata deteriorates from fungal infection and active metabolism. A novel chitosan/nitrogen doped titanium dioxide/natamycin (CS/N TiO₂/NT) composite film was developedinhibiting Fusarium pseudoanthophilum and Talaromyces purpureogenus by 71.30% and 75.04%, with 132.20% higher tensile strength and 69.29% lower oxygen permeability. Preservation efficacy was markedly temperature dependent. At 25 °C, only marginal improvements were observed. At 10 °C, the coating significantly reduced total colony counts and modulated enzymatic activities, notably activating peroxidase, retarding the decline of superoxide dismutase (SOD), and inhibiting polyphenol oxidase. Optimal preservation was achieved at 4 °C, where respiratory intensity and microbial proliferation were suppressed while SOD activity was effectively sustained. Cox proportional hazards analysis further confirmed that coated samples stored at 4 °C exhibited a 33.33%–38.46% extension in storage life relative to uncoated controls. These findings establish a temperature responsive preservation strategy and provide a mechanistic framework for extending the shelf life of perishable mushrooms.

Fabrication of an Asymmetric PCL-HAP/CS Bilayer Composite Membrane with Dual Osteogenic and Fibrogenic Functions for Guided Bone Regeneration

Guijuan Li,Enhui Wang,Kangkang Zhao,Wei Xia,Fuli Tian,Yanqiang Li

This study develops a PCL-HAP/CS bilayer membrane to address limitations in current bone regeneration materials. Traditional single-component materials often exhibit poor biocompatibility, mechanical mismatch, and insufficient osteogenic capacity. To overcome these issues, a composite structure was engineered by combining hydroxyapatite (HAP) synthesized via co-precipitation and silane-treated for enhanced compatibility, polycaprolactone (PCL) for mechanical strength, and chitosan (CS) for bioactivity. The bilayer design features a PCL-HAP layer fused with a CS layer, mimicking natural bone’s stratified architecture. Material characterization confirmed the composite’s structural integrity and functional properties. In vitro tests demonstrated selective cell compatibility: osteoblasts thrived on the mineral-rich PCL-HAP side, while fibroblasts showed enhanced adhesion on the CS layer. Rat skull defect experiments revealed dual functionality—the membrane provided mechanical support for bone regeneration while delivering antibacterial effects to surrounding soft tissues. The synergistic combination leverages PCL’s durability, HAP’s osteoinduction, and CS’s antimicrobial properties, effectively compensating for individual material weaknesses. This asymmetric membrane design shows significant potential for clinical bone repair applications, particularly in oral surgery, by simultaneously addressing hard tissue regeneration and soft tissue protection requirements.

Preparation of PDA-GO/CS composite scaffold and its effects on the biological properties of human dental pulp stem cells

Li Yaoyao,Huang Xinhui,Fu Weihao,Zhang Zonghao,Xiao Kuancheng,Lv Hongbing

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is an graphene oxide (GO) derivative of graphene, which has a large specific surface area and exhibited satisfactory physicochemical characteristics. In this experiment, GO was reduced by PDA to generate PDA-GO complex, and then PDA-GO was combined with Chitosan (CS) to synthesize PDA-GO/CS composite scaffold. PDA-GO was added to CS to improve the degradation rate of CS, and it was hoped that PDA-GO/CS composite scaffolds could be used in bone tissue engineering. Physicochemical and antimicrobial properties of the different composite scaffolds were examined to find the optimal mass fraction. Besides, we examined the scaffold’s biocompatibility by Phalloidin staining and Live and Dead fluorescent staining. Finally, we applied ALP staining, RT-qPCR, and Alizarin red S staining to detect the effect of PDA-GO/CS on the osteogenic differentiation of human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs). The results showed that PDA-GO composite was successfully prepared and PDA-GO/CS composite scaffold was synthesized by combining PDA-GO with CS. Among them, 0.3%PDA-GO/CS scaffolds improves the antibacterial activity and hydrophilicity of CS, while reducing the degradation rate. In vitro, PDA-GO/CS has superior biocompatibility and enhances the early proliferation, migration and osteogenic differentiation of hDPSCs. In conclusion, PDA-GO/CS is a new scaffold materialsuitable for cell culture and has promising application prospect as scaffold for bone tissue engineering.
