Base-free oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2, 5-furan dicarboxylic acid over nitrogen-containing polymers supported Cu-doped MnO2 nanowires

Jinhua Lai,Feng Cheng,Shuolin Zhou,Sha Wen,Dongwen Guo,Wenguang Zhao,Xianxiang Liu,Dulin Yin

Nitrogen-containing polymer-supported Cu-doped MnO 2 (Cu-MnO 2 @PDVTA) nanowires were prepared and their catalytic performances were evaluated via oxidation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). The Cu-MnO 2 @PDVTA catalysts were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, N 2 physical adsorption, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Both the Cu 2+ and MnO 2 nanoparticles were found to synergistically promote HMF oxidation to FDCA via 2,5-furandicarbaldehyde and 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid intermediates. The Cu-MnO 2 @PDVTA-3 catalyst demonstrated the highest catalytic activity, providing FDCA with an excellent yield of 96.8% after 12 h at 80 °C. The time course of HMF oxidation revealed that oxidation of the hydroxyl group in HMF was easier than that of the aldehyde group. Cu-MnO 2 @PDVTA-3 could act as a reusable heterogeneous catalyst for HMF oxidation.

Fast Hemostatic, Antimicrobial Multifunctional Gelatin-Based Hydrogel Dressing Loading Bifunctional Cu/ZIF-8 for Accelerated Wound Healing

Zhichao Zhang,Xijing Zhuang,Xufeng Dong,Jingyuan Zhao,Hao Zhang,Hong Zheng,Chang Xu

The moist wound environment of the human body immediately following injury is highly susceptible to microbial colonization and subsequent infection, potentially triggering a prolonged inflammatory response. Existing dressings tend to be more monofunctional, making it difficult to cope with wound bleeding and bacterial growth at the same time. The development of more effective wound dressings is a critical priority in contemporary wound care. In this study, we developed a hydrogel wound dressing comprising two components: (1) antimicrobial particles of curcumin (Cur)-loaded bimetallic organic framework (Cu/ZIF-8), and (2) a carrier hydrogel formed by methacryloylated gelatin (GelMA) cross-linked with methacryloylated hyaluronic acid (HAMA). The experimental results confirmed the successful loading of curcumin with 45.6% for Cu/ZIF-8@Cur. In addition, the material exhibits pH-responsive behavior, excellent biocompatibility (>80% cell survival), low hemolytic activity (<5%), and potent antimicrobial activity (≥99%) against E. coli and S. aureus. It is stable under neutral conditions and releases bactericidal particles under bacterial infection (in an acidic environment) to achieve sterilization. This study addresses the limitations of gelatin-based dressings, such as inadequate hemostatic capacity and weak antimicrobial performance, and it demonstrates promising potential for clinical translation.

MOF-Derived Cu-Nanoparticle Embedded in Porous Carbon for the Efficient Hydrogenation of Nitroaromatic Compounds

Qiao Chenxia,Jia Wenlan,Zhong Qiming,Liu Bingyu,Zhang Yifu,Meng Changgong,Tian Fuping

Abstract Novel Cu-nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in porous carbon materials (Cu@C-x) were prepared by one-pot pyrolysis of metal–organic frameworks (MOF) HKUST-1 at different temperatures. The obtained material Cu@C-x was used as a cost-effective catalyst for the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene using NaBH 4 as the reducing agent under mild reaction conditions. By considering the catalyst preparation and the catalytic activity, a pyrolysis temperature of 400 °C was finally chosen to synthesize the optimal catalyst. When the aromatic nitro compounds with reducible groups, such as cyano, halogen, and alkyl groups, were tested in this catalytic hydrogenation, an excellent selectivity approaching 100% was achieved. In the recycling experiment, a significant decrease in nitrobenzene conversion was observed in the third cycle, mainly due to the very small amount of catalyst employed in the reaction. Hence, the easily prepared and cost-effective Cu@C-400 catalyst fabricated in this study demonstrates potential for the applications in selective reduction of aromatic nitro compounds. Graphic Abstract The catalyst Cu@C-400 exhibited 100 % conversion and high selectivity for the hydrogenation of industrially relevant nitroarenes.

Cellular Trojan Horse initiates bimetallic Fe-Cu MOF-mediated synergistic cuproptosis and ferroptosis against malignancies

Kerong Chen,Anwei Zhou,Xinyuan Zhou,Jielei He,Yurui Xu,Xinghai Ning

Disruptions in metal balance can trigger a synergistic interplay of cuproptosis and ferroptosis, offering promising solutions to enduring challenges in oncology. Here, we have engineered a Cellular Trojan Horse, named MetaCell, which uses live neutrophils to stably internalize thermosensitive liposomal bimetallic Fe-Cu MOFs (Lip@Fe-Cu-MOFs). MetaCell can instigate cuproptosis and ferroptosis, thereby enhancing treatment efficacy. Mirroring the characteristics of neutrophils, MetaCell can evade the immune system and not only infiltrate tumors but also respond to inflammation by releasing therapeutic components, thereby surmounting traditional treatment barriers. Notably, Lip@Fe-Cu-MOFs demonstrate notable photothermal effects, inciting a targeted release of Fe-Cu-MOFs within cancer cells and amplifying the synergistic action of cuproptosis and ferroptosis. MetaCell has demonstrated promising treatment outcomes in tumor-bearing mice, effectively eliminating solid tumors and forestalling recurrence, leading to extended survival. This research provides great insights into the complex interplay between copper and iron homeostasis in malignancies, potentially paving the way for innovative approaches in cancer treatment.

In situ stabilization of Cu+ for CO2 Electroreduction via Environmental-molecules-induced ZnO1-x shield

Zhang Fanxing,Cao Ning,Wang Chentao,Wang Shengxiang,He Yi,Shi Yao,Yan Mi,Bao Ying,Li Zhenglong,Xie Pengfei

Electrochemical CO 2 -to-ethanol conversion is challenged by sluggish C-C coupling kinetics and wide products distribution. Although Cu +  has been demonstrated to enhance multi-carbon (C 2+ ) formation, the stabilization of Cu + under reduction conditions is difficult. Here, we report a hydrogen-ethanol pretreatment strategy to obtain Cu nanoparticles covered by highly dispersed and disordered ZnO 1- x clusters. Ethanol-induced ZnO 1- x redispersion gives rise to abundant Cu + on the subsurface. The optimal catalyst delivers a 73.0% ethanol Faradaic efficiency (FE) and 86.0% total C 2+ FE at −0.9 V, with a 2.3 mmol cm −2  h −1 ethanol formation rate and single-pass ethanol yield of 18.0%. The catalyst also exhibits stability beyond 500 h, attributed to the stabilization of Cu + by the ZnO 1- x shield that requires a high energy barrier for lattice oxygen removal. In situ X-ray spectroscopy and calculations reveal a volcano relationship between Cu + ratio in Cu species and ethanol FE. Optimal Cu + density not only facilitates *OC-COH coupling but also optimizes the adsorption energy of *CH 2 CH 2 O on catalyst for ethanol electrosynthesis.

Synthesis of carboxyl-functionalized g-C3N4 supported Cu-MOFs photocatalyst and its efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production

Na Wang,Yibo Zhang,Zelin Meng,Mingyang Song,Heming Zhao,Yang Wang,Shuai Bai,Jianglei Hu,Fengwei Shi,Xia Yang

Addressing the low surface area and high charge recombination of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ), this study employs a synergistic carboxylation and MOF-loading strategy. Copper-based MOF (Cu-MOF) was uniformly loaded onto carboxylated spherical g-C 3 N 4 (C 3 N 4 –C) via a solvothermal method, creating a visible-light-responsive C 3 N 4 –C-MOF photocatalyst. Material characterization results indicate that the characteristic peak at 1632 cm −1 in the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy confirms the successful grafting of 4-carboxybenzoic acid (4-CBA). Carboxylation enhanced hydrophilicity and optimized surface charge, improving reactant adsorption. Photoelectrochemical tests showed significantly boosted visible light absorption, increased photocurrent density, and reduced EIS arc radius, confirming efficient interfacial charge separation. Photocatalytic hydrogen production experiments revealed that under simulated solar irradiation, the hydrogen production rate of C 3 N 4 –C-MOF2.0 reached up to 12.68 mmol g −1  h −1 , representing an approximately 1.68-fold increase compared to the unmodified C 3 N 4 -MOF. This work provides a novel approach for designing MOF/functionalized g-C 3 N 4 composites, advancing solar-driven hydrogen production.

Magnetic-epichlorohydrin crosslinked chitosan schiff’s base (m-ECCSB) as a novel adsorbent for the removal of Cu(II) ions from aqueous environment

Yuvaraja Gutha,Yaping Zhang,Weijiang Zhang,Xu Jiao

Metal ions cause a serious public health problem. It is a great challenge to find an effective and efficient adsorbent to remove heavy metals from wastewater. Chitosan-based adsorbents are potential and effective for heavy metal ion removal. Hence a novel m-ECCSB was synthesized, characterized and utilized as an adsorbent for the removal of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution. Various factors affecting the uptake behavior such as pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial concentration of Cu(II) and temperature effect were investigated. Maximum adsorption capability (123.10   mg/g) was obtained at pH   =   6, adsorbent dose of   =   250   mg, rotational speed   =   200   rpm, contact time   =   60   min, and temperature of 323   K. The result of the kinetic study shows that the adsorption of Cu(II) could be described by the pseudo-second-order equation. Equilibrium data were analysed with the Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms and Langmuir model was found to provide the best fit of the experimental data. The thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption of Cu(II) onto m-ECCSB was spontaneous (ΔG°   =   −8.990, −10.00 and −10.593   kJ/mol), endothermic (ΔH°   =   15.674, 15.478 and 15.699   kJ/mol) and ΔS° (0.0814   J/mol   K) suggests an increased randomness at the solid/solution interface under the studied conditions.

Cu/Al2O3 catalyst prepared by a double hydrolysis method for a green, continuous and controlled N-methylation reaction of nitroarenes with methanol

Hao Zhang,Junyan Wang,Minjie Liu,Di Liu

Cu/Al 2 O 3 catalyst was developed by a double hydrolysis precipitation. Over the Cu/Al 2 O 3 catalyst, a continuous mode of N-methylations of nitroarenes with methanol was successfully achieved under the exogenous base- and H 2 - free condition. Methylation process of nitroarenes could be controlled just by adjusting reaction conditions, affording the desired N-monomethylanilines or N, N-dimethylanilines, respectively. The characterization displayed that the double hydrolysis precipitation method made active metal Cu surface enrichment and high dispersion, meanwhile endow Cu/Al 2 O 3 with more developed pore system, which were responsible for the higher performance of our catalyst relative to Cu/Al 2 O 3 -CP. Compared with the reported batch mode, our procedure possessed the merits of low cost, environment-friendliness, better controllability and wide universality.

Insights into the interfacial effects in Cu-Co/CeOx catalysts on hydrogenolysis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to biofuel 2,5-dimethylfuran

Xiaofeng Wang,Chengcheng Zhang,Zuyi Zhang,Yaoming Gai,Qingbo Li

The interface site between metal and support possess unique electronic and morphological structure, providing distinct active centers for favorable reaction in catalytic conversion of biomass derivatives to valuable chemicals. In this study, a series of Cu-Co/CeO x catalysts were prepared for hydrogenolysis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) via reduction of the corresponding layered double hydroxide precursors. The characterizations indicated the formation of CoCe-Vö interface (Vö denotes oxygen vacancy) and the effect of hydrogen spillover from Cu species to CoCe-Vö interface. Furthermore, the experiments and theoretical calculations verified that CoCe-Vö interface could activate the C O bond. The optimized catalyst showed a DMF yield of > 90% at 180 °C and 1.5 MPa H 2 with no deactivation in the cycling tests. This study reveals the interfacial effects of the nanocatalysts, including the oxygen vacancies and hydrogen spillover, on hydrogenolysis of HMF, which provided a simple and efficient approach for synthesis of high-performance non-noble metal nanocatalysts applied to the hydrogenolysis of various biomass derivatives.

Transforming waste brake pads from automobiles into Nano-Catalyst: Synergistic Fe-C-Cu triple sites for efficient fenton-like oxidation of organic pollutants

Fuyuan Qi,Jianfei Peng,Zilu Liang,Jiliang Guo,Jiawei Yin,Ainan Song,Zongxuan Li,Jiayuan Liu,Tiange Fang,Jinsheng Zhang,Lin Wu,Qijun Zhang,Ting Wang,Zhuofei Du,Hongjun Mao

The arbitrary disposal of used brake pads from motor vehicles has resulted in severe heavy metal pollution and resource wastage, highlighting the urgent need to explore the significant untapped potential of these discarded materials. In this study, The in-situ growth of highly dispersed Fe 2 O 3 nanocrystals was achieved by simple oxidation annealing of brake pad debris(BPD). Interestingly, Cu remained unoxidized and acted as a “valence state transformation bridge of Fe 2 O 3 ” to construct the “triple Fe-C-Cu sites”. The Fenton degradation experiment of pollutants was conducted under constant temperature conditions at 40 °C, a stirring rate of 1300 rpm, a pH value of 3, a catalyst dosage of 0.5 g/L, pollutant dosage ranging from 50 to 400 mg/L, and H 2 O 2 dosage of 0.25 g/L. Experimental results showed that BPD treated at 300 °C for 2 h exhibited optimal Fenton-like oxidation activity, achieving rapid degradation of over 90 % of refractory antibiotics, such as tetracycline and ciprofloxacin, in organic wastewater within 10 min. This remarkable performance was mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of “Fe-C-Cu triple sites”, where the electron-donating role of C in the Fe-C and Cu-C interfaces facilitated the conversion of the Fe(III) to Fe(II) and Cu(II) to Cu(I). In addition, the ability of Cu 2+ to accept electrons at the Fe-Cu interface promoted the transition from Fe (II) to Fe (III). This “balance of electron gain and loss” accelerated the interfacial electron transfer and the recycle of dual Fenton sites, Fe(II)/Fe(III) and Cu(I)/Cu(II), to generate more ·OH from H 2 O 2 . Therefore, this strategy of functionalizing BPD as Fenton-like catalysts without the addition of external Fe provides intriguing prospects for understanding the construction of Fe-based Fenton catalysts and resource utilization of Fe-containing solid waste materials.

Economical and simple in-situ synthesis of CuS@Cu foam as a binder-free cathode for high-performance hybrid Mg–Li ion batteries

Liu Yang,Yang Jingdong,Wen Jiaxin,Ye Junliu,Liu Huan,Lu Liwei

Recently, rechargeable magnesium-ion batteries (MIBs) and rechargeable magnesium/lithium hybrid-ion batteries (MLHBs) have gained recognition as promising energy storage devices. However, the conventional CuS cathodes exhibit sluggish kinetics and poor cycle stability, thereby impeding the advancement and application of CuS. In this work, we have developed an economical and simple in-situ approach for synthesizing CuS@Cu foam (CSC) and evaluated its potential as a cathode material for both MIBs and MLHIBs. In both MIBs and MLHIBs, the CSC cathode demonstrates competitive performance. In MIBs, at a current density of 100 mA g −1 , the initial discharge specific capacity of the CSC is 150.94 mAh g −1 , which is higher than that of commercial CuS (3.99 mAh g −1 ). In MLHIBs, the CSC exhibits a discharge specific capacity of 502.95 mAh g −1 after 70 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g −1 , which significantly surpasses the discharge specific capacity of commercial CuS (229.52 mAh g −1 ). This performance improvement is attributed to the presence of Li + ions, which expedite the reaction kinetics, obviate the need for an activation process, and effectively facilitate the conversion reaction. In conclusion, by in-situ synthesis of CSC, the active material CuS firmly adheres to the Cu foam current collector. This approach is not only economical and simple but also significantly enhances the reactivity of the electrode material, thereby improving the electrochemical performance. This work provides valuable insights for the design, synthesis, and performance optimization of cathode materials of magnesium metal-based batteries.

Optimization of heterogeneous Fenton-like process with Cu-Fe@CTS as catalyst for degradation of organic matter in leachate concentrate and degradation mechanism research

Chengrui Guo,Xia Qin,Rui Guo,Yue Lv,Mingran Li,Ziyuan Wang,Tinghui Li

The heterogeneous Fenton-like process with bimetallic chelated magnetic chitosan aerogel (Cu-Fe@CTS) as catalyst was applied to treat pre-coagulated leachate nanofiltration concentrate. The process conditions were optimized by Box-Behnken Design (BBD) and the maximum UV 254 removal reached 96.06% under the conditions of temperature 87.62 °C, oxidant dosage 0.2395 mol/L and catalyst dosage 1 g/L. The TOC concentration was reduced from 847.5 to 99.7 mg/L and COD concentration was reduced from 1625 to 464 mg/L. The three-dimensional (3D) fluorescence analysis showed that most of Fulvic acid-like (FA-like) was removed. The adsorption experiment showed that the catalyst reached the adsorption balanced after 60 min and the corresponding FA adsorption removal reached 14.1%. The addition of Tert-butanol (TBA) reduced the FA removal by 59.4%, indicating that the hydroxyl radicals ( OH) was the main active species. Experiments of the OH capture at different pH showed that the Fenton-like system produced more OH at pH of 4, at which the maximum FA removal was 96.61%, while the FA removal still reached 94.26% at pH of 7. The OH capture at different temperature showed that the Fenton-like system produced more OH at 90 °C. KI and TBA shielding experiments showed that OH was produced on the catalyst surface rather than being produced by catalysis of free metal ions in the solution.
