For reducing the amount and fully utilizing active sites of CuO, microscale CuO coated melamine-cyanuric acid supramolecular assembly (CuO/MCSA) was developed in situ and empolyed as efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator for water decontamination. The characteristics of CuO/MCSA were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, XPS, SEM, TEM and BET. CuO/MCSA showed strong catalytic ability to activate PMS for tetracycline (TC) degradation. Under the condition of pH≈7 and PMS dosage of 0.5 mmol /L, 1 g/L CuO/MCSA including less than 3.0 wt% CuO can remove about 70% of 20 mg/L TC within 5 min. And after five consecutive cycles, the degradation rate of CuO/MCSA was still around 52.6%. PMS dosage, reaction temperature and initial pH value, co-existing anions and small molecule acids all affected the performance of CuO/MCSA/PMS system on TC degradation. According to the quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) test, 1O2 played the most important role in TC degradation in CuO/MCSA/PMS system. In addition, CuO/CSA/PMS system exhibited wide applicability, which can effectively remove TC in different water bodies (deionized water, tap water and lake water) and various pollutants (TC, methylene orange and methyl blue). Overall, this work provided an effective strategy to enhance the efficient utilization of catalyst for PMS activation.

Effective treatment of hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is crucial for minimizing nuisance odors from intensive livestock and poultry operations. The development of high-performance desulfurizers holds practical significance in this context. Herein, a novel CuO-CaCO 3 co-impregnated biochar desulfurizer (Cu x Ca y /BC T ) was synthesized by impregnation-pyrolysis method, using waste tea stalks and metal salts as raw materials, and it is intended for the treatment of H 2 S at room temperature. The optimized Cu 0.75 Ca 0.25 /BC 800 shows an excellent H 2 S removal capacity of 182.67 mg/g, which is 31 times and 5.6 times that of inactivated biochar (BC 800 ) and copper-oxide-impregnated biochar (Cu 0.75 /BC 800 ). The desulfurization mechanism of Cu 0.75 Ca 0.25 /BC 800 involves synergistic effect of reactive adsorption and catalytic oxidation . CaCO 3 ’s alkaline adsorption sites and copper-mediated activation of superoxide radicals (∙O 2 - ) were critical in this reaction. Besides, Cu 0.75 Ca 0.25 /BC 800 demonstrated excellent reusability, retaining approximately 85 % of its initial H 2 S removal capacity after seven cycles of desulfurization and regeneration. This study aims to develop a metal oxide- and carbonate-impregnated biochar-based desulfurizer, with the goal of advancing the technology for catalytic removal of H 2 S in a more environmentally friendly and effective manner.

To address the problem of suboptimal performance in deep eutectic solvents displayed by traditional TiO2photoelectrodes and Cu2O photoelectrodes that have undergone simplistic modifications that result in a mismatch with battery discharge capacity, a method combining hydrothermal and dip-coating techniques was developed to create a Fe2O3-CuO heterojunction structure on the FTO surface. Then, the impact of the heterojunction structure on the performance of solar flow batteries was investigate in this study. The experimental findings reveal that the formation of the heterojunction structure effectively mitigates the recombination rate of photogenerated carriers within the photoelectrode. Furthermore, by meticulously adjusting the CuO loading, the harmonious balance between charging and discharging currents was achieved, thereby enhancing the overall performance of the solar redox flow batteries. In comparison to standalone Fe2O3photoelectrodes, this innovative approach significantly broadens the spectrum of sunlight utilization. Notably, the fabricated Fe2O3/CuO-2 photoelectrode demonstrates a remarkable photocharging performance, far surpassing both Fe2O3photoelectrodes and commercial TiO2photoelectrodes. Specifically, the Fe2O3/CuO-2 photoelectrode boosts an average current density of 598.68 μA∙cm−2, with its charging current density being 2.74 and 5.15 larger, respectively, than that of the Fe2O3and commercial TiO2photoelectrodes.

LiCoO 2 nanoparticles were prepared through a sol–gel method, and then appropriate amount of CuO nanoparticles were deposited onto their surfaces to improve their cycling performances. It is found that the CuO coated sample has the capacity retention higher than 90% at the rates below 30 C after 10 cycles, which also has the highest capacities of 135 and 123 mAh g −1 at 40 C (5480 mA g −1 ) and 50 C (6850 mA g −1 ), respectively. The cyclic voltammograms result reveals that the CuO coating reduces the polarization and improves the electrochemical activity of cathode. In addition, experimental results indicate that CuO coating plays an important role in reducing the charge transfer resistance of the cell during cycling, which has been demonstrated by the electrochemistry impedance spectroscopy analysis. The above data indicate the potential application of CuO coated LiCoO 2 in high power field.

A novel surface oxidation-dominated heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (HCO) process was developed to overcome matrix-induced scavenging limitations. By fabricating CuO-Co 3 O 4 heterojunction as catalyst, surface adsorbed hydroxyl radical (•OH ad ) and surface atomic oxygen ( ⁎ O ad ) emerge as primary reactive oxygen species (ROS) from ozone decomposition. The engineered catalyst achieves 4.3-fold and 1.9-fold higher oxalic acid degradation efficiency than CuO and Co 3 O 4 , respectively, accompanied by broad-spectrum mineralization for refractory pollutants and robust Cl⁻ resistance with verification in actual hypersaline industrial wastewater treatment. Combined characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that heterojunction formation increases Lewis acid sites and induces directional electron transfer from CuO to Co 3 O 4 , thereby lowering ozone activation barriers and accelerating surface-bound ROS generation, wherein O 3 is preferentially decomposed into •OH ad and ⁎ O ad at Co sites but only •OH ad at Cu sites. Collectively, this study advances a surface-bound ROS mediated catalytic ozonation paradigm with superior matrix resistance, enabling broader industrial deployment of HCO.

Constructing electrocatalysts with heterogeneous interfaces is of great significance for improving the performance of electrocatalytic hydrogen production . In this work, CuWO 4 ·2H 2 O–CuO (P-CWOC) was synthesized by hydrothermal method , and spherical porous CuWO 4 –CuO (CWOC) was obtained through annealing treatment. The size of CuWO 4 –CuO can be controlled from 72 to 221 nm by regulating the supersaturation of the solution. Among them, CuWO 4 –CuO with a particle size of 72 nm (CWOC-72) possesses the most oxygen vacancies and the largest specific surface area . The W atom in the heterostructure of CuWO 4 and CuO can affect the electronic structure of Cu atoms, and the presence of oxygen vacancies is beneficial for increasing the surface oxygen affinity of the composite material. Benefitting from the largest number of oxygen vacancies and the largest specific surface area, the CWOC-72 own the best catalytic performance compared to the other four catalysts. The overpotential at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 is 121 mV, and the Tafel slope is 70 mV·dec −1 . Its excellent stability was confirmed by chronoamperometry , in-situ XRD , and in-situ Raman spectroscopy , and its alkaline HER performance is superior to most CuO-based catalysts.

Electrocatalytic CO2reduction driven by renewable electricity offers a sustainable approach to producing valuable chemicals, though it is often hindered by low activity and selectivity. CuO, an important transition metal oxide, exhibits unique advantages in photoelectrocatalysis due to its high intrinsic catalytic activity and ability to serve as an active site for CO2reduction. SiO2, a widely used substrate, facilitates Cu loading and increases the specific surface area of the catalyst. Meanwhile, g-C3N4provides excellent visible-light responsiveness and efficient charge carrier mobility. Together, CuO, SiO2, and g-C3N4are earth-abundant, low-cost, and chemically stable, making them ideal for solar-to-fuel applications. Here, a novel ternary heterojunction photocatalyst was constructed using SiO2, CuO, and g-C3N4. The heterostructure significantly improves light-harvesting efficiency, promotes efficient charge separation and transport, and simultaneously mitigates photogenerated carrier recombination and catalyst corrosion. The resulting SiO2@CuO/g-C3N4catalyst demonstrates outstanding CO2conversion performance, achieving a CO yield of 17 mmolg−1h−1at 1.2 VRHEwith nearly 100% selectivity. Moreover, this work systematically investigates the electrocatalytic CO2reduction reaction (CO2RR) mechanism on Cu-based catalysts, offering insights into the formation of high-value multicarbon products and highlighting the potential of rational heterojunction design in enhancing solar-driven fuel production efficiency.

Boron (B) powder is considered to be an excellent fuel for propulsion applications due to its remarkable energy density. However, B is severely affected by boron oxide (B 2 O 3 ) on its surface. To solve this problem, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and copper oxide (CuO) coatings were applied onto B particles, leveraging their synergistic effects to enhance the ignition and combustion performance (ICP) of B. Various characterization methods and CO 2 laser ignition experiments were used to determine how PVDF and CuO impact B combustion. PVDF and CuO are helpful to improve the ICP of B. Especially for the (B/CuO 4 )@PVDF 16 sample, it exhibits 28.2% higher combustion heat, 46.4% shorter ignition delay, and flame expansion rate (FER) increases from 0.091 to 0.280 m s −1 versus unmodified B. Furthermore, PVDF suppresses B powder agglomeration during combustion. The present work provides a new idea for improving the combustion of B powder. Graphical abstract

Overusing fossil energy sources has led to global warming, seriously risking the habitability of the environments on which people depend. Photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) is a promising strategy to reduce CO2 into high-value-added chemicals and fuel products. However, photoelectrocatalysis faces problems related to low CO2 conversion efficiency and uncontrollable product complexity. This study reports a CuO–MoO3/TiO2NTs composite photoelectrode prepared by pulsed electrodeposition for the photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) reduction of CO2 to ethanol in a 1 M NaHCO3 medium under visible light irradiation and at an applied potential of −0.3 V vs. SCE. Molybdenum trioxide plays a regulatory role in the structure and properties of the photoelectrode. Photoluminescence analysis suggests that this occurs by introducing new energy levels between those of CuO and TiO2, which reduces the bandgap energy from 1.42 eV to 1.17 eV, promotes electron–hole pair separation, and significantly boosts photoelectrocatalytic activity. In addition, experimental results show that the doping of MoO3 enhanced the adsorption strength of the intermediate products and promoted the C–C coupling process. The optimized composite photoelectrode achieves 89% Faraday efficiency for ethanol at −0.5 V versus SCE (saturated calomel electrode). No new phases were generated during the catalytic process, confirming the stability of the CuO–MoO3/TiO2NTs composite photoelectrode.

In this study, we used the hydrothermal method and high-temperature calcination method to attach CuFe 2 O 4 to CuO for the first time. The (1 1 1) plane of CuO and (1 1 2) plane of CuFe 2 O 4 formed surface heterojunction, which acts as the interface for adsorbing PMS. Meanwhile, the most stable form of CuFe 2 O 4 /CuO, charge transfer and charge density in CuFe 2 O 4 /CuO/PMS system are proposed by combining density functional theory (DFT) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The experimental data from electron spin resonance (ESR) determinations and active species capture demonstrated that both nonradical singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and active radicals (•OH, •SO 4 - ) participate in CIP degradation. The degradation pathways and the intermediates are proposed by Fukui index and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Based on the T.E.S.T program (Toxicity Calculation Software), the bioaccumulation factor, acute toxicity, mutagenicity, and development toxicity of intermediates are proposed. Also, CuFe 2 O 4 /CuO demonstrated good reusability and stability. The findings within this work offered deep insights into the mechanisms of organic pollutants degradation via SR-AOP over Fe-Cu catalyst. Besides, verification of the experimental results indicated that the CIP removal of 86.67% and the mineralization efficiency of 47.17% under optimal conditions. Finally, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and fluorescence spectra in a three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D EEMs) are used to characterize the potential performance of catalyst CuFe 2 O 4 /CuO-500 in medical wastewater.

Using MnOOH nanorods as template, dopamine (DA) as a linker, and copper acetate as copper source, a novel kind of CuO@PDA@MnOOH composite nanorods was prepared by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. After the removal of PDA by high temperature calcination, a mace-like CuO@MnO 2 nanorods was formed, in which CuO nanoparticles distributed on the surface of the MnO 2 . The unique structure endows the mace-like CuO@MnO 2 composite nanorods with superior broad-spectrum Fenton-like catalytic activity for the degradation of the ECs under acidic and neutral conditions, and the highest removal rate of tetracycline hydrochloride and rhodamine B can exceed 90 % within 30 min and 60 min, respectively. Furthermore, the mace-like CuO@MnO 2 composite nanorods presented good chemical stability along with anti-interference ability. After eight cycles, the catalytic activity still remained above 60 %. More importantly, in the treatment of actual industrial wastewater, the mace-like CuO@MnO 2 composite nanorods also showed good catalytic ability.

Peracetic acid (PAA)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have shown promise for organic pollutants removal but predominantly rely on conventional mineralization pathways. Herein, we propose a novel strategy for eliminating phenolic contaminants via polymerization using a heterogeneous CuO/PAA system, in which phenolic compounds are not decomposed but primarily transformed into recoverable solid-state organic polymers. Mechanistic investigations reveal that the catalytic system leverages electron transfer from phenolic contaminants to activated PAA (e.g., CuO@PAA complex), generating phenoxy radicals that undergo crosslinking via polymerization and coupling reactions. Consequently, at neutral pH and low PAA dosage (3.0 mM), complete removal of diverse phenolic compounds (1.0 mM), including phenol, halophenols, cresol and bisphenols, was achieved within 90 min, with 60.5–74.9 % of total organic carbon (TOC) converted into solid-state polymers. More importantly, the electron transfer-driven polymerization maintained efficient in complex matrices and authentic coking wastewater, eliminating 100 % of volatile phenolics (1750 ± 25 mg/L) while generating recoverable polymers (150 mg/L) and enhancing biodegradability (BOD 5 /COD from 0.22 to 0.52). Through the design of a dual-zone reactor, the CuO/PAA-driven polymerization process demonstrated scalability with reduced environmental impact. This work provides a sustainable paradigm for phenolic wastewater remediation via PAA-activated polymerization, enabling simultaneous contaminant elimination and carbon resource recovery.
